Volvo passenger cars may be linked with road safety and advance occupants protection. You might have heard about my strong support for Ford in my high school era and how I love my egg shaped 1992 Tarago. However, it was a powder blue Volvo 244DL that was actually our first love for cars in Australia. It had an interesting story which itself could be my core motivation for writing about cars.
If we talk about Volvo, I think I am rightfully qualified to do that. I was invited to test the V60 & S60 City Safe function in Sydney. It was an eye opening occasion. Hence, I believe Volvo did master the safety aspect of modern car motoring.
On the other hand, the Volvo V60 T6 R-design is not only emphasised on its safety credentials, but also brings out the racing aspect of its unique character. The R-design package is based on the Teknik pack, but also put in
emphasis on its overall presentation as a car which has the ability to excel in speed. In particular, the alloy wheels, spoiler, side skirt and a slightly different front grille. Well, most importantly, a bigger suspension system that helps it to excel.
It employs a 242kW @5,400rpm, six cylinder turbo charged petrol engine with a 6 speed Geartronic transmission automatic gear box. TORQUE is 480 Nm and is available from 3,000 to 3,600rpm. City fuel consumption is claimed at 15.0/100km and highway figure is just 7.7litre per 100kms. With this kind of figures, the acceleration is quite an impressive 5.9seconds with a tare weight of 1,747 kgs. It is an excellent weight to power ratio. Obviously, if Volvo decided to take out all the non-essential items in the car, for example, leather seats and get it into bare minimum weight, it could have reached a higher speed. It is because speed and weight have a close connection in bringing out performance.

How does it drive like, as an all-wheel drive car? It gives a lot of assurance over wet road. We also like the extra power from the turbo engine. Power is more linear that a sudden boast makes it more enjoyable for daily use. The feel of the power steering can be adjusted in the ‘my car’ section on the dash menu, that makes it so much fun and comfortable for suiting people’s steering weight preferences. I find the default setting suits me better.
As for the City Safe function, it really is faultless. I remembered trying them in Sydney under a controlled environment. If I approach something, like a car, a pedestrian or a car just cutting into me, while travelling in under 30kms, it will warn me with a loud buzzer sound. If I don’t take action to brake and stop, the car will brake itself for me. While there are so many distractions in life, this safety device is a life safer to a number of people.
Volvo has a name for being the safest car around; it has been driven by people who are overly too cautious on our road. Hence, a Volvo driver would also be labelled as a slow driver. But not now, with the R-design V60 T6 R-Design, it has really changed the game rules overnight.
