gedoen en aanpassings aan verskillendesoorte vlermuishuise gemaak om ’n skui-ling te ontwikkel wat vir vlermuise aan-vaarbaar is en waarna hulle vanself saltrek.Dit het tot die ontwikkeling van die

vlermuishuise gelei.Vlermuise se bydrae tot die beheer van

insekplae word in ’n groot mate onderskat.Studies het bewys dit is eerder vlermuisewat insekplae kan beheer en nie chemiesemiddels nie.Die motte van die Amerikaanse bolwurm

ewewig te kom kan die diertjies insekgetal-le baie doeltreffend beheer, wat pekanneut-en ander vrugteboere andersins duisenderande uit die sak sou jaag.Mense wat egter vlermuishuise wil

aanskaf, moet nie onder die wanindrukverkeer dat hulle sommer hul bestaande

Die skemahuis is ’nsimbool van vooruitgang; vanmense wat uit moeilike omstandig-hede sukses behaal het en behoortdus bewaar en gevier te word.

Dit is dalk onrealisties, maar eksal mal wees daaroor indien men-se die paar oorblywende, onveran-derde skemahuisies kan restou-reer en vir die nageslag bewaarsodat hulle vir mense kan wyswaar hulle vandaan gekom het enwat hulle allles bereik het.

DIE skemahuisies van Upingtonboei my al vandat ek die eerstekeer hier aangeland het.

Dit is ’n stukkie geskiedenis wateie aan dié wêreld is en ditbehoort beslis bewaar te word.

Wanneer ek soggens vanGrootdrink af dorp toe ry, is ditvir my jammer om te sien vanhoeveel van dié huise nou netmurasies oor is. Elke huisie was’n tuiste vir ’n gesin; vol herinne-rings van die lief en leed wat diégesin in hul jare daar beleef het.

Die skemahuise is in die 1930’sgebou om ’n uitweg vir diearmblankevraagstuk te bied. Elkegesin het ’n viervertrekhuisiegekry en sewe hektaar grond.

Daar was soveel kinders dat ’nhoërskool in Gariep en verskeielaerskole wat intussen toegemaakis, begin moes word.

Wanneer ek verby die murasiesry, wonder ek oor die verhale watsaam met die mense verdwyn het.Dit was arm tye wat met baieswaarkry gepaardgegaan het,maar daar moes tog ook wonderli-ke sosiale tye gewees het: vol vansaamlag en -kuier, Nagmaalbyeen-komste, vryersklonge, opsitkerseen kwajongens wat die lewe

Unfortunately the violenceagainst women and children is notlimited to 16 days a year.

It is a constant battle in acountry where it is all too easy tovictimize the most vulnerable insociety.

The rate of sexual violence inSouth Africa is among the highestin the world.

South Africa faces a globallyunprecedented problem of violenceagainst women and children, withrates of homicide, rape as well aschildhood and domestic violencefar above those of other countries.

The problem of violence isundermining the nation’s econo-mic and social development.

The problem is so severe that itaffects people from all walks oflife, regardless of socio-economicstatus, ethnicity, age and religion.

Preventing and reducing levelsof violence has been a missingpiece in the national transforma-tion agenda. It needs to beaddressed vigorously as a nationalpriority. The overall effect on thecountry is staggering.

The most immediate impact ofviolence on health is seen in thecountry’s health facilities, wherean estimated 1,75 million peopleannually seek health care forinjuries resulting from violence.

Women who have been rapedare at risk of unwanted pregnan-cy, HIV and other sexuallytransmitted infections. Over athird of them develop post-trauma-tic stress disorder (PTSD), which,if untreated, persists in the longterm and depression, suicidaltendencies and substance abuseare common. These troublingafter-effects in themselves feed thecycle of abuse and neglect in afamily and social dynamic.

Children who have been exposedto emotional, sexual and physicalviolence are at an increased riskof contracting HIV, as well assuffering from depression, suicidaltendencies and even becomingsubstance abusers.

Poverty and social inequity arekey drivers of violence. Inequalityin access to wealth and opportuni-ties results in feelings of lowself-esteem, which are channelledinto anger and frustration.Violence is often used to gainsought-after respect and power,whether through violent robbery,rape, severe punishment ofchildren or violence againstpartners.

Widespread exposure of childrento violence promotes anti-social

behaviour.Studies have shown that girls

who were exposed to physical,sexual and emotional trauma aschildren are at increased risk ofre-victimisation as adults.

Exposure of boys to abuse,neglect or sexual violence inchildhood greatly increases thechance of them being violent asadolescents and adults, andreduces their ability to formenduring emotional attachments.

Widespread abuse of alcohol anddrugs is another key factor.

South Africa has one of thehighest per capita alcohol con-sumption levels per drinker in theworld. Many acts of violenceoccur after alcohol and drugabuse, especially fights, sometypes of homicide and rape. Manyvictims of violence are alsorendered vulnerable by alcohol.

Law enforcement in SouthAfrica is generally very poor.

Few perpetrators are effectivelypunished, with the result thatlaws fail to provide deterrenceand victims often have little faithin the system. In addition to this,there has been a conspicuous lackof stewardship and leadership inthe area of violence preventionfrom government, despite themassive problem violence poses tothe country.

We as South Africans of allraces, creeds, religions andsocio-economic backgrounds muststand together and play an activerole in preventing violence againstour country’s most vulnerablecitizens, not just during these 16days, but all 365 days of the year.

’n Krisis staar Israel in diegesig. ’n Berig dat ’n vyand reedsin hul land kamp opgeslaan het,vervul Agas met vrees. God stuur’n boodskapper na Agas met diewoorde: “Bedaar! Bly kalm!Moenie bang wees nie. Moet jounie ontstel oor hierdie tweestukke brandhout nie.”

Agas kry boonop die vryheidom van die Here ’n teken te vra,maar hy maak nie daarvangebruik nie.

Dan kom die Here self met dieImmanuel-teken. Voordat dieseuntjie weet om tussen goed enkwaad te onderskei sal die tweekonings wat julle vrees, vernietigwees.

Die moeder sal die seuntjieImmanuel noem, omdat syreken die gevaar is nou afge-weer.

Later in Jes. 7:17-20 kom sakdie Assiriërs op Israel toe. Diekeer gaan daar geen uitkomswees nie.

So word Immanuel nou virIsrael ’n onheilsteken, maar toghet die seuntjie vir Israel komleer om te glo en op God tevertrou.

Matt. 1 kom leer vir ons soosGod in die verlede voorsien het,sal hy ook in die volheid vandie tyd reddend teenwoordigwees.

Hier ontmoet Ou- en Nuwetesta-mentiese gelowiges mekaar deurby mekaar te leer: “Moenie bangwees nie, want kyk daar gaan ’nseun gebore word en hulle salhom Immanuel noem, dit beteken:God met ons.”

Een van die mooiste beloftes indie Woord is juis: Moenie vreesnie, moenie bang wees nie.

Die engele kom sê dit vir dieskaapwagters waar hulle in dienag hul skape oppas.

Met die geboorte van dieJesus-kind het hy ons waarborggeword.

geskenkpak van die Orange River Cellars.Die 12 wenners van die jaar gaan om ’nwegbreeknaweek meeding. Die fotograaf vandie wenfoto van die jaar, wat uit die 12maandelikse wenfoto’s gekies word, gaan ’nnaweek vir vier mense in een van die NCFamous Lodges wen. Uit die 12 wenners gaandie foto wat die meeste likes op Facebook kry’n naweek vir twee mense in een van die NCFamous Lodges wen.

Die foto’s moet groter as 500 KB en 300 dpiwees en moet in jpeg-formaat aan die e-posgeheg wees. Stuur inskrywings na [email protected]. Verskaf ’nkontaknommer, inligting oor waar en deurwie die foto geneem is en waar die fotograafwoon. Net amateurfotograwe mag hulleinskryf. sulke enorme verskeidenheid, hoef diewynliefhebber vóór, tydens en ná dieKersmaal net een wynnaam te soek, en disOrange River Cellars.Kersoggend – darem laterig in die oggend

en Colombard. Al twee is fris, vrugtige droëwitwyne, met die Colombard wat so effevoller in die mond lê. Hoe ook al, wanneeralmal tafel toe skuif, behoort daar twee ofdrie van hierdie wyne op die tafel te wees.Voorgeregte kan wissel van ’n garnaalkel-

kie, vleisslaai, koue hoender of miskien sop.Maar wees verseker dat die Chenin Blancof Colombard ’n heerlike aanvulling tot diehuiskok se harde werk sal wees.Die fris, suiwer witwyne kry ook sommer

jou maagsappe aan die gang wat help dat

die kos beter verteer. En een van diegrootste voordele van Orange River Cellarsse wyne is dat hulle van nature laag is inalkohol. Waar normale witwyne teen tussen13%- en 14%-alkohol aangetref word, staanOrange River Cellars se wyne in dieomgewing van 12%.Waaruit sal die hoofgereg vanjaar

bestaan? Kalkoen, skaapboud, beestong, ofmiskien ’n lekker gerookte ham?Kalkoen mag ’n witvleis wees, en ja, dit

sal voortreflik smaak saam een van diebogenoemde wyne. Maar moenie bang weesom te eksperimenteer en jou kalkoen tenuttig saam met ’n glasie van Orange RiverCellars se Pinotage wat so effe in die yskaskoudgemaak is nie.Vir die lam sal daar niks beter wees nie

as een van Orange River Cellars se klassie-ke rooiwyne nie – Cabernet Sauvignon ofShiraz.
