According to the annual worldwide surveys by
the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), on
average the past 8 years regarding the top fitness
trends (Thompson, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010,
2011, 2012, 2013) from the view of the exercise
professionals globally, it is clearly obvious that the top
voted selection has been the Educated, Certified, and
Experienced Fitness Professionals across the world.
This finding creates a strong incentive for more study
and exploration of the features, status and future of
the health and fitness industry and its education,
training and certification. If this fact has been
connected with the latest statistics reports
(International Health, Racquet and SportsClub
Association [IHRSA], 2013a, 2013b) which are
mentioned to the global growth and attitude of the
health and fitness industry, it is easy to realize that
the profile and status of the fitness education is
absolutely a hot topic. Europe now is the largest
market in the world and the European health and
fitness sector has a serious economic and social
importance which are obvious based on some specific
statistics. More specifically, it serves roughly 44
million consumers, generates 25 billion Euro in
revenues, employs 390,000 people, and consists of
48,000 facilities (IHRSA, 2013a). Under this statistics
analysis it is understood the need to be explored and
studied the current and future status of the
qualifications that every fitness professional need to
have in order to become updated and competitive.
Additionally, our modern way of living has
largely eliminated physical activity as one of the
fundamental stimuli from our lives. The growth of
non-communicable lifestyle diseases and the
epidemic increase in obesity provide clear evidence of
this imbalance between our lifestyles and our physical
requirements. Physical inactivity has become a major
risk factor for chronic non-communicable diseases in
populations. In fact, opportunities to be physically
active tend to decrease as we become adults and
recent lifestyle changes have reinforced this
phenomenon (European Union [EU], 2008). According
to available data, between 40 and 60% of the EU
population lead a sedentary lifestyle, and only about
31% are able to complete the EU guidelines of 30
minutes of moderate physical activity at least 3 days
per week (European Commission [EC], 2010).
It is widely known and evidence based that
physical activity, exercise, health and quality of life are
closely interconnected (Blair, 2009). The human body
was designed to move and therefore needs regular
physical activity in order to function optimally and
avoid illness and ageing. Furthermore, living an active
life brings many other social and psychological

benefits and there is a direct link between physical
activity and life expectancy, so that physically active
populations tend to live longer than inactive ones (G.
Kelley, K. Kelley, Hootman, & Jones, 2009). Sedentary
people who become more physically active report
feeling better from both a physical (LaMonte et al.,
2012) and a mental (Jeoung, Hong, & Lee, 2013) point
of view, and enjoy a better quality of life (Sagatun,
Sogaard, Bjertness, Selmer, & Heyerdahl, 2007).
The purpose of this survey is to uncover
prevalent trends in thought and opinion of the
participants concerning the future qualifications of
the exercise professionals within the health and
fitness industry through a mixed model research. For
the first time though and under the support and
authorization of the European Health and Fitness
Association (EHFA) this pilot project was realised and
initially exclusively focused on the European fitness
sector. The idea of this study was based on the fact
that if we are interested in enhancing this industry
more and its role in public health, recreation and
leisure time we should examine carefully the present
and future of the most attractive and popular
credentials and educational courses which are
provided widely firstly at a European level and
globally afterwards in a future prospective of this
study. The future of the health and fitness industry is
to attract a new target group by giving inspiration and
motivation, to be more active and gain their trust in
order to be consistent, disciplined and to exercise
more often. Only with this triptych can we hope that
the gym members, exercise professionals and fitness
operators will have many chances to achieve their
goal.
At this point, it is important to mention the
crucial role of the education for this perspective in
order to provide high quality courses, evidence-based
knowledge, up to date practical skills, competitive
attitude under a modern and flexible way of delivery.
The major mission of this study was the prediction of
the future certifications and Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) courses in the European fitness
sector and the definition of the top 20 trends in
education and training of European fitness
professionals. In addition, the detection of the main
features of education and training programmes in the
European fitness sector, and the future plan of
standards development by authorized organization as
EHFA is in Europe, were some of the minor objectives
of this study. In summary, this study tried to unite the
whole European continent in order to complete the
first serious step in presenting some useful and
important findings from this region by setting
credentials under the microscope.
Online attitude survey
In the survey (http://www.ehfa.eu.com/node/328)
there was a questionnaire where 13 closed ended
questions (multiple, yes–no question or scaled
question) were included and it was designed to be
completed in less than 10 minutes. The scaled
questions were constructed using a Likert-type scale
ranging from a low score of 1 (least important) to a
high score of 5 (most important). Using the eSurveys

Pro (www.esurveyspro.com) the questionnaire was
sent electronically to a defined list of a focused EHFA’s
database including 20 National Associations, 65
accredited Vocational Training Providers or Higher
Education Institutes, 55 top operators of fitness
chains or clubs and suppliers, 1310 registered and
certified exercise professionals. In summary, the
whole database for this online survey included 1450
contacts totally. After a period of four weeks 740
responses were received from just about every
European region (25 countries), which represent a
return rate of 51% based on a specific contact list of
respected and credible participants who represent the
whole European fitness sector.
Targeted Sample
The exclusive usage of EHFA's database for this
study and the exclusive focus on the European view
regarding this issue was based on the following three
facts in order to secure credibility and target related
to the European health and fitness industry nowadays
and to the unique and interesting characteristics of
this continent generally. Firstly, EHFA is the leading
not-for-profit organization representing the whole of
the European health and fitness sector in Brussels
setting the professional standards at the Vocational
Training through the European Qualifications
Framework (EQF) at levels 2-5 while fully supports the
strategic principles and objectives of the EU Lifelong
Learning Programme (www.ehfa.eu.com). Secondly,
the European fitness market is home to some of the
top performing club companies, operators and
suppliers (EHFA & Deloitte, 2013), remains the most
lucrative region with the greatest number of health
and fitness clubs (IHRSA, 2013a, 2013b) and fitness is
the number one sport or physical activity in Europe
(EC, 2010). Thirdly, the European Register of Exercise
Professionals (EREPs) is an independent process for
the registering of all instructors, trainers and teachers
working across Europe in the exercise and fitness
industry. It is a pan-European system, based on
independent national registers, culminating in a
central European database which is regulated by EHFA
Standards Council using an accepted official European
qualification framework which describes the
knowledge, skills and competencies exercise
professionals need to achieve for registration
(http://www.ereps.eu.com).
International meeting
The 4th Annual International Standards
Meeting (ISM) by EHFA was held 20-22 November
2013 in Budapest, Hungary and gathered world
interest of the largest certifying agencies in Europe
and the United States. This very important event for
the health and fitness industry functioned as a unique
occasion for discussion, exchange of experiences and
brainstorming under the collaboration of 50 delegates
totally, 47 delegates from 19 European countries and
3 delegates from the United States. The title and main
message of this ISM was ‘Sedentary behavior, active
living & exercise: The role of the fitness sector‚ and
the major purpose was the promotion of a
cooperation, innovation and professional standards
for the fitness sector globally. One out of four sessions
of this meeting had a similar title with this study and
was focused on the questionnaire which were
included as well as on the online survey (Batrakoulis,

2013). This session supported the project and
enhanced the method of this study by using a face-to-
face round table discussion and personal comments
from well-known and experienced international
experts in exercise science either through the
academia or vocational training field. All the delegates
completed the questionnaire of this survey giving
their feedback under this excellent opportunity for an
international teamwork regarding the present and
future of this industry and its education, training and
certification. The response rate of the face-to-face
survey during this meeting was 100% and it has
constituted a part of the total study sample (740
collected questionnaires).
Firstly, participants were asked to describe
their occupations and according to the analysis of
Table 1, 36.6% mentioned that they were mainly
Personal Trainers. Regarding the topics that were
clearly connected with the future occupation roles
and the most popular credentials for the next 10 years
for every qualified fitness professional, we found the
results below. Table 2 shows that the future business
area which collected the higher attractiveness was the
targeted studios and the top credential for the future
was that of the Personal Trainer according to the
analysis in Table 3.
At this point it is useful to provide some
clarifications concerning the job description of the
different types of Exercise Specialists that are shown

professional who is able to handle the supervision and

Certified Personal Trainer from an accredited
certifying agency or provider (e.g. NCCA Accredited in
the United States or EHFA Accredited in Europe)
or/and must hold an academic degree (bachelor) in
Physical Education, Exercise Science or Sport Science
(or related science such as Exercise Physiology,
Kinesiology) from an Accredited Higher Education
Institute (University or College).
Besides, the results showed that clearly the
highest percentage of survey respondents were
exercise professionals from all age groups and Figure
1 presents all the categories of participants in this
study. More specifically, Figure 2 gives demographic
details of the survey respondents including age range
and Figure 3 shows that 38.6% of the exercise
professionals who completed the questionnaire had
more than 10 years of professional experience
working in the health and fitness industry.
In addition, almost 30% of the survey
participants stated that they held not only an
accredited vocational certification but also an
academic degree and this finding is clearly provided in
Figure 4.

The questionnaire of this study included
another two closed ended questions concerning the
continuing professional development (CPD) and
lifelong learning attitude. In the first question which
was: ‘Do you currently do further learning, attend
conferences, workshops to develop your fitness
career?’, it is clear in Figure 5 that the percentage of
participants who answered yes was 90.6%.

Lastly, in the next question which was: ‘To be
recognised as a fitness professional do you think that
there should be a compulsory form of lifelong learning
(which includes a system of continuing
education/career development) to keep your
knowledge and skills up to date?’ in Figure 6 the
answers were slightly divided. More specifically, the
majority of participants with a percentage of 68.1%
mentioned that they totally agree with this attitude,
30.3% that they partially agree and 1.2% that they did
not agree with this approach.

This study examined also some key features of
the certification programmes or CPD courses. After
this examination we found four elements. Firstly, in
Figure 7 it is obvious that the most preferred format
of delivery among the survey participants was the
combination of face-to-face teaching with contact
hours and online education with non-contact hours
and a distance learning approach.

Lastly, in the question: ‘Which factor plays the
major role in the future trends of fitness education,
training and certification?’ most of the accredited
organizations who participated in this survey
answered that the economic environment, latest
research findings and a modern lifestyle using
technology have almost the similar effect. This finding
it is shown in Figure 10.
Figure 10. Future factors that affect fitness credentials reported by the survey respondents
Finally, concerning the findings of this study,
we realise that the majority of Training Providers
across Europe provide courses that give a lifetime
certification nowadays. According to this view we
should examine carefully the fact that one of the basic
characteristics of certifications is that function as a
flexible educational pathway which promotes the
quality and credibility while develops a serious
incentive to the holder to be always up to date and
competitive. This feature is one of the most attractive
in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and
functions as a serious difference at this level of
education (informal learning).
Emphasizing on the future trends in fitness
credentials and setting the education and training of
European exercise professionals under the
microscope we could mention that there is a strong
connection and interaction between this survey
results and current demographic status of global

population which shows some elements at which we
should focus in the future. We have got an aging
population (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012)
and we have also got an overweight and obese
population of all ages with childhood obesity on the
top of global concern (Organization for Economic Co-
operation and Development [OECD], 2013). In
addition, there is a high percentage of a physically
inactive population (Hallal et al., 2012) and there is an
expanded prevalence of chronic conditions in adults
(Ward & Schiller, 2013; WHO, 2010). So, it is clear
enough that the average client of fitness clubs
nowadays is not exclusively the fitness enthusiast or a
workout fanatic. Modern research findings show that
physical inactivity has become a major risk factor for
chronic diseases in global population and seems as
the biggest epidemic of public health in the 21st
century (Blair, 2009). According to the latest available
data, almost 50% of the EU population lead a
sedentary lifestyle, and only about 30% are able to
meet the EU guidelines of 30 minutes of moderate
physical activity daily (EC, 2010). Under these
circumstances and the future perspective of public
health, the health and fitness industry with its
educated professionals could become the guide in a
global campaign for a healthier and fitter world. In
spite of the challenges due to the economic crisis,
Europe as the largest fitness market worldwide should
be able to react and work correctly in this future
direction through its qualified, updated and
competitive exercise professionals.
Besides, not only are Certified Personal
Trainers experiencing an employment boom, but the
US Department of Labor expects the profession to
grow by 24% in the next decade
(http://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-
service/fitness-trainers-and-instructors.htm) and it
was recently named the 18th best job in America
according to the latest prediction
(http://money.cnn.com/pf/best-
jobs/2012/snapshots/18.html) due to its growth
opportunities, great pay, and benefit to society. These
facts are absolutely connected with our findings
showing an optimistic prospective for the exercise
professionals within the health and fitness industry.
Especially with obesity rates on the rise, exercise
professionals are in a position to change someone's
health for the better and for the long haul. They can
also work in a variety of settings beyond the gym,
from hospitals to corporate wellness departments to
clients' homes to outdoor boot camps. Thus, it is
obvious that the education, training and certification
programmes for these professionals will be seriously
an interesting and attractive area for the upcoming
years not only at European level but globally.
According to the global epidemiology statistics
concerning the percentage of the population that is
directly affected, along with evidence based research,
prevention is the best treatment and active living and
regular exercise enhance prevention ideally (National
Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health
Promotion [NCCDPHP], 2009). This concept shows
that probably Medical Fitness is the future of the
Exercise and Health industry. Improving the quality of
life and securing well being through prevention and
rehabilitation of chronic health conditions is one of
the major goals in public health globally. It is worth
focusing on the recommendations made by the Sport
and Exercise Medicine Committee Working Party of
the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in the UK titled
![Page 11: NEWSLETTER_66](https://reader033.fdocument.pub/reader033/viewer/2022042823/568bdd5b1a28ab2034b58131/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

‘Exercise for life: physical activity in health and
disease’ which provides us with some very important
conclusions (Royal College of Physicians [RCP], 2012):
‘Exercise is an effective and inexpensive management
tool for diseases with a low side-effect profile. The
providers of exercise instruction should work to
appropriate professional standards, which should be
developed to aid primary care in the risk stratification
of patients and the identification of care pathway’.
At this point we should mention a statement
with a high impact concerning this issue by Robert
Sallis as the Advisory Board Chairman of Exercise is
Medicine® and of course as a Past-President of ACSM:
‘There is no better indicator of a person’s health and
longevity than the minutes per week of activity a
patient engages in and when incorporated in a
healthcare setting, the exercise vital sign can be an
important tool for prevention and management of
disease’. In example, the Exercise for Health Specialist
(No. 3 on the top list in Table 3) is able to provide
exercise programming and supervision to individuals
with a range of chronic health conditions
(cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic,
musculoskeletal) and to communicate effectively with
medical and healthcare professionals about
participants’ conditions. One more example is the
Active Ageing Trainer (or Senior Fitness Specialist)
who will gain more and more clients from this ever-
growing age group. Most seniors did not grow up
attending an aerobics class, or working out at the
gym. Because these types of activities are relatively
new to them, seniors may be more apt to hire a
specialized fitness professional to learn how to
perform exercises properly to avoid injury.
The current status of the European health and
fitness industry is associated with specific
characteristics regarding the qualifications and
education level that are provided to its professionals
while it tries to show the future perspective
recognizing its pros and cons. The results gave their
stigma to the major and minor objectives of this study
and after their analysis we will be able to realize some
very important things related to the next generation
of this industry and its education. According to these
findings we can understand that the average exercise
professional who has been certified by an accredited
body holds an academic degree simultaneously
presenting a comprehensive level of study and a
competitive profile within the European health &
fitness industry. The fact that almost the two thirds of
the certifying bodies and exercise professionals who
participated in the survey stated that they prefer a
combined approach regarding the delivery of
educational programmes (face-to-face and online
teaching). This finding shows clearly that the era
where the traditional classroom teaching with
contact hours exclusively has passed and due to
modern technology and the internet everybody is
interested in getting a certification in a more flexible
way without losing credibility and quality of its
studies.
Additionally, it is very crucial to mention that
during the session and roundtable with this topic at
the 4th ISM by EHFA in Budapest, Hungary in
November 2013, many delegates and representatives
of Training Providers, Higher Education Institutes or
National Associations from all around Europe
requested the establishment of a limit in the online
approach of the fitness education relating the total
![Page 12: NEWSLETTER_66](https://reader033.fdocument.pub/reader033/viewer/2022042823/568bdd5b1a28ab2034b58131/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

tutorial hours per course. In addition, one of the most
interesting points of the results was about the lack of
a recertification system from the average European
Training Providers who mostly give to their students a
lifetime certification. This point created some
concerns and thoughts regarding the quality of
education, credibility and incentive to always be up to
date and competitive. Let us not forget that under this
attitude the lifelong learning across Europe has not
been supporting optimally and this feature was the
only totally different feature between the delegates
from the European Training Providers and the
representatives of three out five largest US certifying
bodies (American Council on Exercise, American
College of Sports Medicine, National Council on
Strength and Fitness) who have got an accreditation
by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies
(NCCA).
One other outcome of this project was the
ascertainment that there was a balance in the
answers regarding the factors that would affect the
education of this industry in the future more. In spite
of the challenges due to the economic crisis, the
fitness education seemed very sensitive to many
different factors and strong enough under these very
stressful economic circumstances globally nowadays.
Finally, examining the top selections in regard to the
prediction of potential growth in many different
business areas and the top 20 of future credentials,
we understood that the future of this industry will be
connected with some specific characteristics. More
specifically, there is a prediction that under the
current economic environment there will be more
flexible businesses which will provide targeted
services (small clubs, fitness-specific gyms, studios)
and will attract the average qualified fitness
professional of the next generation who would like to
become an Exercise Specialist working with some
targeted populations by expanding and upgrading
their profile.
In conclusion, the results of this study predict
that many advanced specialisations in the CPD
programmes for the certified Personal Trainers who
are interested in becoming Exercise Specialists in

This perspective could create the appropriate

Medical Fitness and the industry of Exercise and

time and is one of the new trends in the global
industry of Fitness according to the worldwide annual

optimal way of life for well-being and is considered as
one of the most important element in fighting all the
biggest public health problems (Blair, Dunn, Marcus,
Carpenter, & Jaret, 2010). The role of the exercise
professionals in this fight is absolutely crucial for
creating more active and healthy society nowadays.

expansion of this project globally. We need absolutely
more interaction from other continents and markets
(North America, South America, Oceania, Asia) and an
international collaboration that will involve many
different organizations who handle this field in their
regions. Of course, an ideal plan for this prospective
would be a global approach to this issue with the
participation of the most respected certifying
organizations and accredited training providers from
all over the world. Under this scenario we could
predict optimally the top future trends on this topic
by defining the worldwide barometer in education,
training and certification of the exercise professionals.
