(Previously) Last week we focused on theimportance of St. John Vianneys longevity aspastor in Ars. Even though he was a holy,

hardworking, amiable, and supremelyself-sacrificing pastor, and even though Ars wasa tiny parish of 60 families and 230 individuals,it still took him eight years of hard pastorallabor, prayer and penance to get most of hispeople just to come back to Sunday Mass. It tookhim ten years to get them regularly to receive theSacrament of Penance, 25 years to root out thetaverns that were robbing men of paychecks andsobriety, and 29 years to eliminate the debaucheddances that were turning the hearts of the youngfrom love to lust. Had the Cur of Ars not hadthe gift of pastoral stability in office to till therough spiritual soil of the village, he would nothave borne much fruit. The great transformationof the people of Ars required heroic priestlyperseverance and much time.

Its ironic, therefore, that the Cur of Ars mostpersistent temptation and the one to which he

was most vulnerable was to abandon his post. The Grappin, who was unsuccessful in gettinghim to succumb to 35 years of nightly torments, almost succeeded in destroying his eventualpastoral harvest by persuading the laborer to takehis hands off the plough. Fr. Vianney did notrecognize until late in life this subtle andconstant machination of the evil one, which hemistakenly thought was the will of God.

The first major temptation came in 1827. Afternine years of work, Fr. Vianney was exhausted.

He was continuously sick with a persistent feveraccompanied by migraines. He was frustrated bythe lack of success in his battle to eliminate the

vices that were spiritually killing his people. Hewas worn down by the daily struggle to keep theorphanage and girls school he had establishedalive. Most challenging of all were the oppositionand scandalous calumnies being hurled at him

by those who opposed his work. He resolved thatfor his own good and the good of others it wasprobably better that he leave.

So he asked Bishop Devie to accept hisresignation and permit him to go to a Trappistmonastery so that he could dedicate himself

unreservedly to a life of prayer and penance. The bishop admired him and certainly didnt want to lose him. He also had a difficultsituation in the village of Fareins, five times thesize of Ars, where a heresy fueled by Jansenismhad taken root. The bishop thought that a holy, ascetic pastor like Fr. Vianney might be able to

bring the wayward people who had taken todoing scourgings and crucifixions inside theChurch back to spiritual sanity. So the bishopoffered him a transfer. The priest, somewhatdisappointed that he would not be able to laydown his pastoral responsibilities for the life of amonk, hesitated, but eventually informed the

bishop that he would accept the offer. A shorttime later, however, after more prayer, he askedthe bishop to let him stay in Ars. Here I amprepared to take charge of a large parish, he said, when I am hard put not to give way to despairin a small one!

The next challenge happened in 1840, when thelonging for solitude in a monastery and thetemptation to flee the pastoral work for which healways considered himself ill-equipped becameintense once again. He anticipated that his bishop

would respond more favorably to his request ifhe actually wrote from the monastery than from

Ars, so one dark night, at 2 am, he secretly leftthe rectory. After he had walked a few miles, however, he paused and asked, Is it really the

will of God that I am doing now? Is not the

conversion of even one soul of greater value thanall the prayers that I might say in solitude? He recognized his desire to flee as a temptationand returned to the Church, where there wasalready a line of penitents awaiting him.

A few years later, in 1843, he experienced hisfiercest temptation against perseverance in hispriestly work in Ars. After he had almost diedthrough and was miraculously cured of acase of pneumonia that was so severe that

several doctors had given him only 30 minutes

to live, he asked the bishop for two weeks torecuperate in his hometown of Dardilly. The 58

year old priests intention was not to return, butinstead to write his bishop from his brothershouse begging once again for permission to headto a monastery, where he could prepare for deathand weep over his poor life. He penned, I am

becoming more and more infirm. Unable to restfor long in bed, I am compelled to spend parts ofthe night in a chair. I have attacks of dizziness inthe confessional, when I lose myself for two orthree minutes at a time. Considering myinfirmities and age, I should like to bid farewellto Ars forever, Monseigneur.

The bishop once again did not want to lose hissaintly priest, but also knew that if he simplyrefused, the temptation might just growstronger. So as was done in 1830, he offeredFr. Vianney a choice: to return to Ars or to takeone of two other posts, including one as chaplainat the shrine of Our Lady of Beaumont. The priest

went on pilgrimage to the shrine anticipating thatthat would be where God would want him, but ashe was serving the Mass of another priest, he sawin prayer that it was not Gods will to becomechaplain there. He returned to Ars, where thepeople received him triumphantly.

The last temptation happened in 1853. Knowingthat on account of his age and multiple healthproblems his death might not be far off, he askedhis new bishop once again for permission to goto the Trappist Monastery of La Neylire. The bishop replied that if he gave permission,it would be so big a sin that no one would giveme absolution! Fr. Vianney knew, therefore, thathe would never receive permission, so he decidedupon a plan to ask for forgiveness instead. Heplotted to leave at midnight and just head to the

monastery and write the bishop from there, asking that he accept his resignation. But hispriest assistant, the brothers of the boys school, and his catechists caught on to the plot and methim as he was leaving. They offered toaccompany him, until he realized they were justleading him around in circles. When he resolvedto go on without him, they stole his breviary, sothat he wouldnt be able to pray his office. Theirtricks worked, even though Fr. Vianney didnt

appreciate them. I behaved like a child, he said

About the author: Father Roger J. Landry wasordained a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Fall

River, Massachusetts by Bishop Sean OMalley, OFM Cap.on June 26, 1999. After receiving a biology degree from

Harvard College, Fr. Landry studied for the priesthood inMaryland, Toronto, and for several years in Rome. After hispriestly ordination, Father returned to Rome to completegraduate work in Moral Theology and Bioethics at the JohnPaul II Institute for Marriage and Family in Rome. He speakswidely on the thought of Pope John Paul II and onapologetics, and is pastor of St. Anthony of Padua in NewBedford, MA and Executive Editor of The Anchor, the weeklynewspaper of the Diocese of Fall River. His articles andhomilies are found at www.catholicpreaching.com

later. He returned to the Church to try to leaveagain.

A priest he very much respected sent him a lettersaying that his intemperate longing for solitude

was a temptation of the devil, and Fr. Vianney, looking back at decades worth of similartemptations, recognized that the priest was right.

All his life, he saw, he had been fighting againstit. Solitude was good; but that good was theenemy of something better.

Once, in describing the primacy of Christiancharity, he had said, You desire to pray to Godand pass your day in the Church, but youimagine that it might be better to work for somepoor people you know who are in great need.He gave the conclusion: The latter is morepleasing to God even than a day passed in front

of the holy tabernacle. That was ultimately the story of his life. As goodas his desire for solitude and for a life totally spentin front of the Lord in the tabernacle were, there

was something more pleasing, which he realizedonly late in life: a life of charity for those who arein great need, as were the penitents, orphans andspiritually and materially indigent of Ars. Thatsthe life he lived as pastor of Ars, where, like Jesus,he loved his own to the end (Jn 13:1).

    Fr. Landry s article first appeared on April 23,2010 in T h e A n c h o r , the Official Catholic

Dominic was born in Caleruega in OldCastile, Spain on the year 1170 and diedon August 6, 1221. He was named afterSaint Dominic of Silos. He is (Domingo inSpanish) also known as Dominic of Osma.He is often called Dominic de Guzmn andDomingo Flix de Guzmn. He was thefounder of the Friars Preachers, called theDominicans or Order of Preachers (OP).Dominic is known as the patron saint ofastronomers.

In the earliest narrative source Dominicsparents are not named. A later source, however, gives the names of Dominicsmother and father as Juana and Felix.Astory is told that before his birth his motherdreamed that a dog leapt from her wombcarrying a torch in its mouth, and seemedto set the earth on fire. This story is likelyto have emerged when his order becameknown, after his name, as the Dominicanorder, in Latin Dominicanus and by a playof words was interpreted as Domini canis:Dog of the Lord. Dominic was broughtup by his parents and a maternal unclewho was an archbishop.

Dominic was educated in the schools ofPalencia, afterwards in a university, wherehe devoted six years to the arts and fourto theology. In 1191, when Spain wasdesolated by a terrible famine, Dominicwas just finishing his theological studies.Legend holds that he gave away hismoney and sold his clothes, his furniture

and even his precious manuscripts, thathe might relieve distress. When hiscompanions expressed astonishment thathe should sell his books, Dominic replied:Would you have me study off these deadskins, when men are dying of hunger? This utterance belongs to the few ofDominics sayings that have passed toposterity. In 1194, around twenty-five yearsold, Dominic joined the Canons Regularin the canonry of Osma, following the ruleof Saint Benedict.

    ST. DOMINICDE GUZMAN:FOUNDEROFTHE ORDEROFPREACHERS_________________REV. F R. G ERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

In 1203 or 1204 he accompanied Diegode Acebo, the Bishop of Osma, on adiplomatic mission for Alfonso VIII, Kingof Castile, in order to secure a bride inDenmark for crown prince Ferdinand.Themission made its way to Denmark via thesouth of France. When they crossed thePyrenees into southern France, Dominicand Diego encountered the Cathars, aChristian religious sect with gnostic anddualistic beliefs, viewed by the RomanCatholic Church as heretical. The Catharsordained women as well as men; theirclergy were celibate, vowed to poverty, and not subject to the pontiffs rule. PopeInnocent III initiated the first crusadeagainst European Christian heretics withhis Albigensian Crusades against theCathars. Traveling up again to Denmarkin 1204 or 1205 and finding that theintended bride had died, Diego andDominic returned by way of Rome andCteaux.

In 1208 Dominic encountered the papallegates returning in pomp to Rome, foiledin their attempt to counter the growingsect. To them he administered his famousrebuke: It is not by the display of powerand pomp, cavalcades of retainers, andrichly-houseled palfreys, or by gorgeousapparel, that the heretics win proselytes;it is by zealous preaching, by apostolichumility, by austerity, by seeming, it is true, but by seeming holiness. Zeal must be metby zeal, humility by humility, false sanctity

by real sanctity, preaching falsehood bypreaching truth.

A small group of colleagues formedaround Dominic, but soon left him sincethe challenge and rigours of a simplelifestyle together with demanding preach-ing discouraged them. Finally Dominicgathered a number of men who remainedfaithful to the vision of active witness tothe Albigensians as well as a way ofpreaching which combined intellectualrigour with a popular and approachable

style. By departing from accepted churchpractices and learning from the

Albigensians, Dominic laid the ground forwhat would become a major tenet of theDominican order over time to find truthno matter where it may be.

In 1215, Dominic established himself, withsix followers. He subjected himself and hiscompanions to the monastic rules ofprayer and penance. The bishop ofToulouse gave them written authority topreach throughout his territory of. Thus thescheme of establishing an order ofPreaching Friars began to assumedefinite shape in Dominics mind. In theyear of the Fourth Lateran Council,Dominic and Foulques went to Rome tosecure the approval of the Pope. Dominicreturned to Rome a year later, and wasfinally granted written authority inDecember 1216 and January 1217 by thenew pope, Honorius III for an order to benamed The Order of Preachers(Ordo Praedicatorum, or O.P.,popularly known as the Dominican Order). This organization has as its motto topraise, to bless, to preach (Latin: Laudare, benedicere, praedicare), taken from thePreface of the Blessed Virgin Mary in theRoman Missal.

Dominic had his headquarters at Romebut he traveled extensively to maintaincontact with his growing brotherhood ofmonks. When he came to in Bologna in

1218, he saw immediately that thisuniversity city was most convenient as hiscenter of activity. Soon a convent wasestablished at the Mascarella church bythe Blessed Reginald of Orlans. Soonafterwards they had to move to the churchof San Nicol of the Vineyards. Dominicsettled in this church and held in thischurch the first two General Chapters ofthe order. He died there on 6 August 1221and was moved into a simplesarcophagus in 1233.

The spread of the Rosary which is aMarian devotion is attributed to thepreaching of St. Dominic though this factis disputed among historians. The Rosaryhas for centuries been at the heart of theDominican Order. Pope Pius XI statedthat: The Rosary of Mary is the principleand foundation on which the very Orderof Saint Dominic rests for making perfectthe life of its members and obtaining thesalvation of others. For centuries,Dominicans have been instrumental in

spreading the rosary and emphasizing theCatholic belief in the power of the rosary.

    AGOSTO:BULANSANG KAHIMAYAAN

Yari na kita sa ika-walo nga bulan sang tuigkag ini nga bulan ginatawag nga Agosto.Ginasiling nga: August means AugustusCaesars month. Augustus Caesar completed

the calendar reform started by Julius Caesar

and also named a month after himself. It is

the eight month of the year in the Julian and

Gregorian Calendars and one of the seven

months with a length of 31 days. This month

was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because

it was the sixth month in the original ten-month

Roman Calendar under Romulus in 753 BC,when March was the first month of the year.

About 700 BC it became the eight month when

January and February were added to the year

before March by King Numa Pompilius.

Nga-a ginatawag naton Bulan sangKahimayaan ukon Month of Glory? Kon atonpamalandungan ang 2Cor. 4:6-7 nagsiling:

    Ang Dios nagsiling:Gikan sa kadudulman

nagasilak ang kapawa Amo man nga Dios ang

nagpasilak sang iya kapawa sa aton mga

tagipusuon, sa pagdala sa aton sang kapawa

sang pagkilala sang himaya sang Dios, nga

nagasilak sa nawong ni Kristo. Pero kami nga

    may espirituhanon nga manggad kaangay

sang tibod nga duta, sa pagpakita nga ang

labing daku nga gahum indi amon kundi iyasang Dios.

Sa sini nga bulan, ang liturhiya nagapakita saaton sang tatlo ka mga dalagku ngakapiestahan nga nasentro sa kahimayaansang aton Ginuo nga iya ginpahayag sa atontawhanon nga kinugali. Ini nagasiling: Takentogether, the three feasts form a profound

    progressive instruction. The foundational feast

is the Transfiguration of the Lord ukon ang

    Mahimayaon nga Pagbalhin sang Dagway

sang Ginuo nga ang kapistahan natuon saAgosto 6 in which we see the glory of God

shining on the face of Christ. Sa Prepasyosang Pagbalhin sang Dagway sang Ginuonagasiling: Kay si Kristo nga amon Ginuonagpahayag sang iya himaya sa iya pinili ngamga saksi kag iya ginpasilak sa dako ngakasilaw ang iya lawas nga kaangay gid sangamon lawas. Sa sini nga paagi iya ginpabakodang pagtuo sang mga Apostoles agudmabatas nila ang kahuloy-an sang Krus, kagginpamatud-an niya ang paglaom sang Santa

Iglesya sang pagpakita niya sa iyakaugalingon sang kasanag nga amo man angnagasilak sang bug-os nga lawas nganagakilala sa iya bilang matuod nga ulo.

A novena of glory magasunod. Ang

Mahimayaon nga Pagdala kay Maria sa Langit

ukon Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

(Agosto 15), we see the Virgin Mary shining

with the same glory as we saw on the face of

Christ. Mary is the first human person to be

taken up body and soul into heaven. In her,

the Church already shares fully in the glory ofChrist. She shows us the goal of our own

pilgrimage of life, and inspires us to persevere

in the process of our own transformation in

    glory.

Eight days after Assumption, as a kind of

octave feast of glory, comes The Queenship

of Mary (August 22,) with this feast (which is

also the concluding mystery in the Rosary),

the Church invites us to see Marys glory in

light of her continuing role in heaven. United

with her Son, she is not separated from us,

but guides us in the way of glory. In the Mass

on that day, we ask the Father in prayer with

the support of her prayers may we come toshare the glory of your children in the

    kingdom of heaven.

Sa katapusan, si San Pablo sa ikaduha ngaKorinto nagasiling: that God has shone his lightin our hearts, so that we may make known his

glory shining on the face of Christ. The liturgy

in the month of August helps us unlock the

secret of how amazing promise is to be

fulfilled in us, earthen vessel with a glorious

    treasure.

Subong man sa sini nga bulan updan mannaton ang Intention sang aton Santo Papanga:

    General Intention: World Youth Day.

That World Youth Day in Madrid may encour-

age young people throughout the world to have

their lives rooted and built up in Christ.

    Missionary Intention: Western Christians.

That Western Christians may be open to the

action of the Holy Spirit and rediscover the

freshness and enthusiasm of their faith.

May God have placed in our heart that this

month shall be a month to Glory in His

    Presence.
