    MY HOUSE SHALL B E CALLED A H OUSEOF PRAYERJohn 2:13-22

by: Fr Mun achi Ezeogu, cssp

A study on accidental deathoccurrences shows that (a) 20%of all fatal accidents occur inautomobiles, (b) 17% of allaccidents occur in the home, (c)14% of all accidents occur topedestrians on streets or

sidewalks, (d) 16% of all accidentsinvolve travelling by air, rail, or

water, (e) 32% of all deathsoccur in hospitals, and (f) only.001% of all deaths occur inchurch during worship services.

According to this study, therefore, the safest place for youto be at any given point in time isnot in your car, or in the home orin the hospital but in church!

We celebrate the dedication ofthe basilica of St John Lateran inRome. Why celebrate thededication of a church in far awayRome, you may ask. It is toremind us of the importance ofthe church building as sacredspace set apart for personal andcollective encounter with God.

    Historically, the basilica of St

John Lateran is the oldest Churchof Rome and the highest rankingchurch in the world, followed bySt Peters basilica in the Vatican.

As such it is the mother of allchurches. When we celebrate itsdedication to God, therefore, wecelebrate the mystery of Godsspecial presence and indwellingin buildings set apart for divine

    worship, including our own

    parish church.

We know that God is everywhere. Yet when the people of Goderect a building and dedicate ittotally to Gods service, Godsglory comes to dwell in that

building in such a way that the building can now be called the

house of God. Solomon recallsthis mystery in his prayer ofdedication of the temple inJerusalem: Even heaven andthe highest heaven cannotcontain you, much less thish o u s e t h a t I h a v e b u i l t !(1 Kings 8:27). So, while wecelebrate Gods specialindwelling in a temple, we mustremind ourselves that Gods

presence is not confined in thetemple. God is still everywhere. But God manifests His glory in aspecial way in some persons, places, and things. A temple orchurch is one such place.

In earlier days, a temple, churchor shrine was revered so much asto suggest that God dweltexclusively in such places. People

went to church, participated inservice, received communion andwent home without knowing who was sitting beside them inchurch. Spirituality was veryindividualistic and the man or

woman sitting next to you wasrather seen as a distraction inones intimate communion withGod. Worshippers forgot that weare brothers and sisters, and that

we come to church to worshipGod as family.

To discourage this self-centeredreligiosity, Vatican Council IIintroduced some changes in

worship such as the priest facingthe people at Mass and

worshippers exchanging the signof peace. But we swung from oneextreme to the other, and today

many Christians have lost thesense of the church as a sacredplace, to the point that thecomportment of many

worshippers in our churchestoday borders on irreverence. Many Christians have altogetherabandoned traditional practicesthat were meant to remind usthat we are in Gods presence

when we enter the church. Theseinclude such little things asdressing in a decent manner forchurch, signing oneself with holy

water on entering the church, genuflecting or bowing to thealtar or the tabernacle beforetaking ones seat or beforeleaving the church, not chattingin church, and lowering ones

voice when one has cause to talkin church.

The loss of the sense of the sacredin church buildings and church

worship might be one reasonwhy young people are no longerkeen on church attendance. If they come to church thinkingit to be another social gathering,no wonder they find it so boring. But when we realize that thechurch is a holy place, a place ofencounter with God, with one

another and with oneself, thenwe bring a certain disposition ofmind and body to church service

which helps make worship anuplifting rather than boringexperience. Todays celebrationof the dedication of St JohnLateran invites us to renew ourfaith in the church as a house ofprayer and to cultivate habitsand practices that make it easyfor God to encounter us

    whenever we go to church.

    JEAN-BAPTISTE-MARIE VIANNEY:FEAST DAY - AUGUST 4

    _________________REV. F R. G ERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

St. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianneyor St. John Maria Vianney was

born in the town of Dardilly, nearLyons, France. He was born on8 May 1786, in the French townof Dardilly, and was baptized thesame day. His parents, Matthieu

Vianney and Marie Beluze havesix children of whom John wasthe fourth. His childhood years

was spent during the time of the

French Revolution. During thosetimes priests have to carry out thesacraments in secrecy in fear of

being punished severely. BeingCatholics, the Vianneys, in orderto attend Mass travelled todistant farms where they couldpray in secret.

In 1802 the Catholic Church wasre-established in France. Thishas resulted to a religious peace. In 1806 John concerned with hisfuture vocation and education

was allowed by his father to leavethe farm and be taught at theschool established by Fr. Balleyfor ecclesiastical students inEcully. By the time he enteredthis school he was about 20 yearsold. He struggled with hisstudies, especially Latin thoughhe was of average intelligence;probably it was because of the

wars interruption of his pasteducation. It was only hisdeepest desire to be a priest andhis mentors patience he didcontinue.

Again his studies wereinterrupted when Franceengaged Spain in a war.Napoleon needed men in this

war. He withdrew theecclesiastical exemption ofstudents from joining this war.

John was one of those recruited.

However, on the morning of theirdeparture, he was left behind forhe was in the Church praying.Reporting to their barracks he

was sent after the troops but thatvery he met a young man whoinstead of leading him to thetroops led him to another place

where some deserters gathered.Staying in Noes for some timecloaked as a school master and

remained incommunicado withhis family. After fourteen monthshe was able to contact and returnto his family.

He returned to his studies atEcully. In 1812, he was sent to theseminary at Verrieres. He was sopoor in Latin that he has to studyphilosophy in French. After hisphilosophical studies at Verriereshe took the examinations forentrance to the seminary proper. But he failed. Upon re-examination of the sameentrance test three months later,he was able to pass. On August13, 1815, he was ordained priest

by Msgr. Simon the Bishop ofGrenoble.

His difficulties in making thepreparatory studies seemed dueto the lack of mental supplenessin dealing with theory as distinct

from practice a lack accountedfor by the meagerness of his earlyschooling, the advanced age at

which he began to study, the factthat he was not of more thanaverage intelligence, and that he

was far advanced in spiritualscience and in the practice of

virtue long before he came tostudy it in the abstract. He wassent to Ecully as assistant parishpriest of Fr. Balley and replacing

the former upon his death in

1818. After that he was madeparish priest of Ars, a village notfar from Lyons. It was in theexercise of the functions of theparish priest that as the curdArs he became knownthroughout France and theChristian world.

Few years after he became theparish priest of Ars he foundedan orphanage for destitute girls. It was called The Providence. Itserved as the model of similarinstitutions established later allover France. Personally, heinstructed the children of TheProvidence in the catechism.Later, these catecheticalinstructions came to be verypopular that they were given

every day in the church to largecrowds. The Providence wasthe favorite work of the curdArs. But this endeavor wasclosed in 1847 because hethought he was not justified inmaintaining the orphanage in theface of the opposition of manygood people.

His main work was in thedirection of souls. After he wasassigned as the parish priest of

Ars people began coming to himfrom other parishes, then fromdistant places, then from all partsof France, and finally from othercountries. During the last ten

years of his life, he spent fromsixteen to eighteen hours a dayin the confessional. His advice

was sought by bishops, priests, religious, young men and womenin doubt as to their vocation,

sinners, persons in all sorts ofdifficulties and the sick. In 1855,the number of pilgrims comingfrom all walks of life had reachedtwenty thousand a year.

Persons of dignity also visited Arsfor the purpose of seeing the holycur and hearing his dailyinstruction. His direction wascharacterized by common sense, remarkable insight, and

    FIL - MISSION SUNDAY

Angpagpamihak-pihak sang tinapay ukonginatawag nga THE MULTIPLICATIONOF LOAVES is one of the most loved

stories in the Sacred Scriptures and oneof the greatest miracles that wasoverdone by Jesus in His ministry. Wehave the exchange of deeds ofgenerosity. God is there as a greatprovider. Jesus performed the miracle

which only shows the generosity of God.Generosity is a virtue that comes fromGod himself. God gave this to humanityin order for them to reciprocate the giftto God and others. The act ofgenerosity must now spring from theperson; it should start from withinoneself. In the many instances in life,

miracles happen out of generosity. God works on this generosity. Generosityalso comes from being grateful and

joyful of the gift received. This would bepassed forward, or one famous film

would say it pay it forward.

This Sunday is the celebration ofFilipino Mission Sunday. This day weremember the Mission Society of thePhilippines (MSP), a missionary society

which was founded in 1965 by theCatholic Bishops Conference (CBCP); itsfoundation was rooted on the values ofgenerosity, gratitude, and joyfulness.

We are reminded that our belovedMissionary Society started from humble

beginnings. The generous heart of the bishops is instrumental. Theirgraciousness led to the establishment ofthe MSP as a continuous concrete act ofgenerosity. The sharing a nd offering oflives of many of our FilipinoMissionaries is a genuine sign that weare indeed thankful to God to the gift offaith received. We thank the Lord bygiving back to him our apostolate in themissions. The willingness of

missionaries to leave the familiar andcomfort confines of ones country sopeople of other places can know Jesuscomes from the simple act of generosityof God by making our country rich infaith.

Sa aton pagsaulog sining Domingo sangFil-Mission,We remember, we pray and

we commit our support for our Filipinomissionaries who have left home, country and family for the sake of theKingdom of God, braving deprivations, loneliness and even persecutions. They

are out there not to save dollars, butto (pardon the clich) save souls. Theyare our gift to the world, they who goout with humility and joy to tell the

world of His love. Their presence isprophetic. They remind us that moneyis not everything.

    Happy Fil-Mission Sunday

    to one and all!

Sa aton pagpangamuyo sa ila, yariang isa ka pangamuyo nga para saila.

supernatural knowledge. He wouldsometimes perceived divine sins

withheld in an imperfect confession. His instructions were simple inlanguage, full of imagery drawn fromdaily life and country scenes, but

breathing faith and that love of Godwhich was his life principle and which

he infused into his audience as muchby his manner and appearance as byhis words, for, at the last, his voice wasalmost inaudible. The miraclesrecorded by his biographers are ofthree classes: first, the obtaining ofmoney for his charities and food forhis orphans; secondly, supernaturalknowledge of the past and future;thirdly, healing the sick, especiallychildren.

The greatest miracle of all was his life.He practiced mortification from hisearly youth, for forty years his food andsleep were insufficient, to sustain life.

And yet he labored incessantly, withunfailing humility, gentleness, patience, and cheerfulness, until he

was more than seventy-three yearsold. He yearned for the contemplativelife of a monk, and four times ran awayfrom Ars; the last time was in 1853.

When he alive he had a great devotion

to St. Philomena. He regarded her ashis guardian and erected a chapel andshrine in honor of the saint. DuringMay 1843, he fell so ill he thought thathis life was coming to its end. He askedSt Philomena to cure him andpromised to say 100 Masses at hershrine. Twelve days later, he was curedand he attributed his cure to StPhilomena. Finally, on 4 August 1859,

Vianney died at age 73 in the odor ofsanctity.

Fifteen years later, on 3 October, 1874Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney wasproclaimed Venerable by Pius IX. On8 January, 1905, he was enrolledamong the Blessed. Pope Pius Xproposed him as a model to theparochial clergy. In 1925 Pope Pius XIcanonized him and assigned 8 Augustas his feast day. This feast was insertedin the General Roman Calendar in1928. Finally, he was made the patron

saint of parish priest in 1929.
