вітража, додаючи захист до відновлення всередині, додаючи

ізоляцію, зменшуючи наші витрати на опалення та

охолодження. Оцінений цей проект коштує 150 000,00 доларів.

Слава Ісусу Христу!

Шановні брати, сестри та друзі парафії,

Коли ми стикалися з цією глобальною пандемією під назвою

COVID-19 або Coronavirus, я можу сказати без сумніву, "ми

ніколи цього не робили так"!

По-перше, я хочу висловити вдячність за ваші постійні

молитви, коли наше парафіяльний проовідь орієнтується в ці

складні часи і в особистому житті, крім тягаря, який ми несемо

для Української Православної Церкви Святого Юрія.

Ми в цьому разом, але більше того, що Бог проходить через

вогонь з усіма нами, і я вірю, що ми вийдемо з другої сторони у

перемозі!

Ми вдячні Господу за те, як Він забезпечував свою Церкву

протягом багатьох років. Бог є настільки вірним, і аспект

дарування є одним із найсміливіших для оточуючого нас світу,

коли ми даруємо, ми відкриваємося на благо Божі

благополучно.

Як ви знаєте, якщо ви відвідували тут протягом будь-якої

кількості часу, ми віримо у важливість десятини від доходу,

який ми отримуємо. Це не тільки те, як церква стає сильнішою,

але ми віримо, що це також, як кожен з нас вчиться довіряти

Богові!

Біблія говорить в Малахії 3:10 - Принесіть же ви всю десятину

до дому скарбниці, щоб страва була в Моїм храмі, і тим Мене

випробуйте, промовляє Господь Саваот: чи небесних отворів

вам не відчиню, та не виллю вам благословення аж надмір?

Життя ніколи не буде без викликів, і це, безперечно, один із тих

часів, коли ми можемо «довести Бога», навіть коли це здається

цілком жертовним.

За останні кілька тижнів ми збиралися разом для Служб у

Божої Церкви. У той час, коли ми закривались для

богослуження, а тепер, коли ми відвідуємо богослуження, наші

обставани були обмежені, я б закликав вас розглянути

можливість залишатися вірним у ваших пожертвування. У нас є

різні способи пожертвування для церкви:

скинути в поштову скриньку біля прихожих; надіслано на

СВЯТИЙ, СЛАВНИЙ ПРОРОК ІЛЛЯ

Один з найбільших

Ілля. Він жив і

пророкував, згідно з

Книгами Царів (III

Царів 17: 1 - IV Царств

2:18), за часів Ахаава

(873-854 рр. Перед

Христом) Та Охозії (854

завзяття до справжньої

віри в єдиного Бога

Ізраїля змусило його

п р о т и с т о я т и з л і й

цариці Єзавелі, яка

в і д м о в и л а с я в і д

істинного Бога і

наказала ізраїльтянам

поклонятися ложному

богу Ваалу (III Царів 16:

29-33).

Цар Ахаав та нечестива цариця Єзавель переслідували пророків

та священиків Божих, і багато з них були вязненні і забиті. Бог

передбачив Іллю, що Єзавель прагнула його вбити, і він втік у

пустелю, біля потоку Хорат (сьогодні: Баді Джамбіс), біля річки

Йордан. Бог забезпечив, щоб ворон відвідував і годував Свого

пророка, приносячи йому вранці хліб, а ввечері м'ясо (III Цар.

L7: 2-6). Але коли потік Хоррата висох, Ілля відійшов до

Сарепта із Сидона. Там його запросили в будинок бідної вдови і

через молитви Бог благословив банки з олією та квітками, щоб

вони ніколи не були порожніми. У цей період помер єдиний

народжений син вдови, і Ілля молився до Ізраїлевого Бога

повернути душу юнака. Чудо відбулося, і Пророк Божий віддав

вдові її сина в повному здоров’ї (III Цар. 17: 7-24).

Ілля з'явився цареві Ахааві і засудив помилкових пророків, щоб

довести, хто справжній Бог, Бог Ізраїля чи Ваал (ІІІ Царів 18: 16

-40). Чотириста п'ятдесят священиків Ваала зібралися на горі

Кармелос (ІІІ Царств 18:22). Ілля наказує збудувати два вівтарі

та принести в жертву двох биків. Який би бог послав полум'я

вогню з неба і спалив приноси, Він є істинним Богом. Вони всі

погодились.

Священики фальшивого бога Ваал молилися від сходу сонця до

заходу сонця, і нічого не сталося (III Цар. 18: 24-28). Коли Ілля

молився, він наказав покласти жертовного бика на вівтар і три

рази залити воду над вівтарем, огонь негайно прийшов з неба і

спалив усе (III Цар. 18: 36-38). Нічого не залишилося, навіть

земля, яка оточувала вівтар зі скелями, була спалена. Після

цього дива Ілля наказав людям забити фальшивих пророків

Ваала (ІІІ Царств 18:40).

Послідували нові переслідування, і Пророк Божий втік на гору

Хорев. Там Ілля відчув присутність Бога як голос повітря твого

(III Цар. 19: 11-12).

Ілля був віднесений на небо на вогневій колісниці (IV Цар. 2:11),

і дав своєму учневі Елісейсові свої благословення, щоб вони

мали вдвічі більшу частину Божої благодаті, яку він сам

отримав (IV Цар. 2: 9).

Ілля - один із найсвятіших пророків та найбільших

особистостей Старого Завіту. Він ніколи не залишав ніяких

творів позаду. Його старанність зберегти справжню віру в Бога

зробила його відомим протягом століть до сьогодні.

У Книгах пророка Малахії (4: 4) та Мудрості Сірахової (48: 1-15)

його друге пришестя віщує, що він підготує світ пришестя Месії.

І ось, каже Господь, я пошлю до вас Іллю Феситу, перш ніж

настане великий і славний день Господній; хто знову поверне

серце батька до сина, а серце людини до свого ближнього, щоб я

не прийшов і жорстоко побив землю (Малахія 4: 4).

У Новому Завіті пророк Ілля з’явився з Мойсеєм на горі Фавор

при Христовому Преображенні (Мат. 17: 1-8; Марк 9: 2-13; Лука

9: 28-36). Згідно з Книгою Об'явлення, до Другого пришестя

Христа два пророки Енох та Ілля приїдуть знову і

пророкуватимуть протягом трьох з половиною років (Об. 11: 3).

Коли вони закінчать своє свідчення, звір, який піднімається з

бездонної ями, почне війну проти них, подолає їх і вб'є (Об. 11:

7). Через три з половиною дні дух життя від Бога увійде в них, і

вони оживуть, і великий страх спаде на тих, хто їх вбив. Вони

піднімуться на небо хмарою (Об. 11:12).

У Новому Завіті Сам Христос використав пророка Іллю як

приклад для опису завзяття святого Іоанна, Хрестителя. Він

також піде перед Ним у дусі та силі Іллі, "щоб обернути серця

батьків до дітей", і неслухняний мудрості праведних, щоб

приготувати людей, готових до Господа (Лк. 1: 17). Коли Його

учні запитали Його: Чому тоді книжники говорять, що Ілля

повинен прийти першим? Він відповів, кажучи: Дійсно, Ілля

приходить першим і відновить усе. Але я кажу вам, що Ілля вже

прийшов, і вони його не пізнали, але зробили йому все, що

забажали (Мат. 17:12). Бо всі пророки та закон пророкували до

Івана. І якщо ви готові прийняти його, це Ілля, який повинен

прийти (Мат. 11: 13-14).

Сьогодні наша Свята Православна Церква у всьому світі

відзначає свято святого Пророка Іллі. У своїй простоті серця та

любові до справжнього Бога своїх предків Ілля протистояв злим

людям світової сили, які змінили справжню Віру на неправду і

поклонялися Ваалу. У наші дні пророк Ілля все ще проповідує

народові Боже покаяння.

Сьогодні Ілля каже нам: "Поверни свої серця до Господа в

чистоті справжньої Віри і не допускай, щоб помилкові вчення

увійшли до твоїх сердець".

Сьогодні Пророк Божий кричить до нас, кажучи: "Нехай ніхто

не поклоняється фальшивим богам Ваала! Нехай ніхто не

схиляється перед ідолами ХХ століття. Людина відвернулася від

Бога, поклоняється фальшивим богам: гроші, задоволення

плоть, багатство і земні володіння! "

Сьогодні пророк Ілля кличе до нас, кажучи: "Господь Бог

живий, і Він буде судити Свій народ за їхніми вчинками.

Покаяйся і звернися до Його люблячої доброти, і ти побачиш

Його чудеса".

Сьогодні минуло понад дві тисячі вісімсот (2800) років з часу,

коли пророк Ілля проповідував і досі він живий на Небі, і його

голос почутий у Церкві. Давайте почуємо його голос.

Звернімося до Бога. Залишимо свою злу природу за собою.

Прославимо Христа, нашого Бога доброчесним життям, і

кричимо: Воістину Господь Бог; він - Бог (III Цар. 18:39).

Ми радіємо своїм стражданням, знаючи, що страждання

породжують витривалість, і витривалість, і характер надії, і

надія не розчаровує, тому що любов Божа влилася в наші

серця Духом Святим. (Рим 5)

для нашого духовного росту

Нижче наведено поради,

1. Ви повинні дбати про

очищення своєї душі

щодня.

2. Ви повинні здобути

б о ж е с т в е н н у

справедливість, а не логіку,

бо тільки тоді благодать

нашого Христа прийде до вас.

3. Перед тим, як щось зробити, подумайте, чи хоче Христа; ,

діяти відповідно.

4. Ви повинні досконало практикувати послух, щоб згодом ви

могли поговорити з іншими про доброчесність послуху.

5. "Ні", яке ви говорите людям, повинно бути "ні", а "так"

повинно бути "так". Не прикидайтеся, але кажіть, що ви

думаєте, навіть якщо це шкодить іншій людині; сказати це

добре, проте, а також дати пояснення.

6. Ви повинні мати і підтримувати цю духовну гідність; завжди

звертайте увагу на те, що подобається вашим товаришам-

ченцям, а не на те, що подобається собі.

7. Щодня ви повинні читати розділ Нового Завіту для

очищення вашої душі.

8. Не дивіться на те, що роблять інші люди, і не вивчайте, як і

чому вони це роблять.

Ваша власна мета - очищення вашої душі та досконале

підпорядкування вашого розуму божественній благодаті. Тож

усе заради своєї мети; моліться, вивчайте, вимовляйте

смиренно Ісусову молитву, усвідомлюючи, що вам абсолютно

потрібна Божа милість. Іншими словами, зверніть увагу на свою

духовну працю.

Це рада, від якої ми можемо отримати користь.

4. Таїнство примирення. або Сповідь. зриває векселі. Це руйнує

запис наших гріхів. Причастя справжнього Тіла і Крові

Христової дає нам силу знову народитися духовно. Хоча це

відбувається не одразу і, можливо, непомітно для нас: Царство

Боже не відбувається спостереженням (Лк. 17:20); все ж немає

сумнівів, що це відродження відбудеться рано чи пізно. і ми

почнемо нове життя, життя в Христі.

5. Ми знаємо силу посту та його значення хоча б з того, що його

якось особливо ненавидить наш ворог диявол.

6. Молитва починається зусиллям душі. Розум слухає слова

молитви. Тоді сенс молитви торкається людського духу, і дух

радіє, керований божественною силою молитви.

7. Молитва є складною, тому що їй протистоїть наша стара. Це

також важко, бо злий всіма силами чинить опір молиться

людині. Для диявола молитва є передчуттям смерті, хоча і

вражає його, і саме тому він всіляко чинить опір. Навіть святим

часом молитва складна, хоч ти можеш подумати, що їх лише

потішить. Дійсно, молитва приносить із собою великий

перемігши всі тілесні похоті, провадили духовне життя, думаючи і діючи все,

що угодне Тобі, бо Ти є просвічення душ і тіл наших, Христе Боже, і Тобі

славу віддаємо з безначальним Твоїм Отцем, і пресвятим і благим і

животворящим Твоїм Духом, нині і повсякчас, і на віки вічні. Амінь.

RESTORATION OF ST. GEORGE’S

Your Your support means so much to us…

What’s happening…

After much research, and consulting with experts, St. George’s is

undertaking a critical restoration project. This includes:

repair to damaged frescoes, peeling paint, new specially formulated

paint. Installation of new double pane storm windows over all win-

dows to seal leaking stained glass, adding protection to the restora-

tion inside, adding insulation reducing our heating and cooling

costs. This project is estimated to cost $150,000.00.

How you can help…

Challenge yourself to donate towards this project regularly, in per-

son, by mail or online.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Dear brothers, sisters and friends of the parish,

As we have encountered this Global Pandemic called COVID-19 or

Coronavirus, I can say without a doubt, "we've never done it this

way before"!

First, I want to express appreciation for your consistent prayers as

our parish leadership navigates these times of challenge both in our

personal lives, in addition to the burden we carry for St. George

Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

We are in this together, but more than that, God is walking through

the fire with all of us, and I believe we will come out the other side in

victory!

We are grateful to the Lord for the way He has provided for His

Church over the years. God is so faithful, and the aspect of giving is

one of the most puzzling to the world around us in that when we

give, we open ourselves up to the blessings of God in a significant

way.

As you know, if you have attended here for any amount of time, we

believe in the importance of tithing off the income we receive. Not

only is this how the church becomes stronger, but we believe it's also

how each one of us learns to trust God!

The Bible says in Malachi 3:10 - Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,‖ Says the LORD of hosts, ―If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.

Life will never be without challenges, and this is undoubtedly one of

those times we can "prove God," even when it seems entirely sacrifi-

cial.

We have gathered together in the past few weeks for the Divine Ser-

vices of the Church. In the time we were closed down for services,

and now with limited attendance at services our offerings have been

limited, I would encourage you to consider staying faithful in your

giving. We have a variety of ways for people to give:

a) By cheque, made out to ―St. George UOC‖. Which can be dropped

into the mail box at the rectory; mailed to 8 Augusta Ave., St. Ca-

tharines ON. L2M 5R2; or you may contact Father Gregory and he

will be happy to pick it up.

b) Securely through our web-site (www.uocofsaintgeorge.org) by

using the ―PayPal‖ button. You can make a single donation, and you

can direct your donation either for ongoing expenses or to the Res-

toration/Renovation Fund of the Church.

c) Through our PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) program. If you

would like to sign up for the PAR program please go to our web page

where an application may be downloaded and filled out, or contact

Father Gregory or a member of the executive parish council and we

will be happy to provide you with the necessary form and informa-

tion.

We thank all of you for your understanding and support – prayerful,

moral and financial – during this crises.

If anyone has any particular need please do not hesitate to call Fa-

ther Gregory at any time. Through our common prayers and with

God’s help we have faith that this crisis will pass quickly, and that

we will take to heart the lessons that God wishes to teach us through

HOLY, GLORIOUS PROPHET ELIJAH

Commemorated August 2

One of God’s greatest

Prophet in the Old

Testament is the Prophet

Elijah. He lived and

prophesied, according to

the Books of Kings (III

Kings 17:1 – IV Kings

2:18), during the days of

Achaab (873-854 B.C.) and

Ochozia (854-853 B.C.).

His zeal for the true faith

in the one and only God of

Israel led him to resist

against the evil queen

Jezabel, who abandoned

the true God and ordered

the Israelites to worship

the false god Baal (III

Kings 16:29-33).

King Achaab and the wicked Queen Jezebel persecuted the prophets

and the priests of God, and many of them were inprisoned and put

to death. God foretold Elijah, that Jezebel seeked to kill him and he

fled into the desert, at the torrent of Chorrath (today: Badi Jiambis),

near the river Jordan. God provided that a raven visit and feed His

Prophet bringing him bread in the morning and flesh in the evening

(III Kings l7:2-6). But when the stream of Chorrath dried, Elijah left

to Sarepta of Sidon. There he was welcomed into the house of a poor

widow and through his prayers God blessed the oil and flower jars,

so that they will never be empty. In that period the widow’s only

begotten son died and Elijah prayed to God of Israel to bring back

the soul of the young man. The miracle took place and the Prophet

of God gave the widow her son in full health (III Kings 17:7-24).

Elijah appeared to King Achaab and challenged the false prophets to

prove who is true God, the God of Israel or Baal (III Kings 18:16-

40). Four hundred and fifty priests of Baal gathered at the mountain

of Carmelos (III Kings 18:22). Elijah order that two altars should be

built and two bulls should be sacrificed. Whichever god would send

flames of fire from heaven and burn the offerings, He is the true

God. They all agreed.

The priests of the false god Baal prayed from sunrise to sunset and

nothing happened (III Kings 18:24-28). When Elijah prayed he

ordered that the sacrificial bull be placed on the altar and that water

be poured over the altar three times, fire immediately came from

heaven and burnt everything (III Kings 18:36-38). Nothing was left,

even the ground surrounding the altar with the rocks was burnt.

After this miracle Elijah order the people to slaughter the false

prophets of Baal (III Kings 18:40).

New persecutions followed and the Prophet of God fled to the

mountain of Choreb. There Elijah experienced the presence of God

as a voice of thine air (III Kings 19:11-12).

Elijah was taken to Heaven on a chariot of fire (IV Kings 2:11), and

gave to his disciple Elissaios his blessings to have twice the portion

of God’s Grace which he himself received (IV Kings 2:9).

Elijah is one of the holiest prophets and greatest personalities of the

Old Testament. He never left any writings behind. His zeal to

preserve the true faith in God made him well known throughout the

centuries till today.

In the Books of the Prophet Malachi (4:4) and the Wisdom of Sirach

(48:1-15) his second coming foretells that he shall prepare the world

of the coming of the Messiah. And, behold, says the Lord, I will send

to you Elijah the Thesbite, before the great and glorious day of the

Lord comes; who shall turn again the heart of the father to the son,

and the heart of a man to his neighbour, lest I come and smite the

earth grievously (Malachi 4:4).

In the New Testament the Prophet Elijah appeared with Moses on

Mount Tabor at Christ’s Transfiguration (Matt. 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-13;

Luke 9:28-36). According to the Book of Revelation, before the

Second Coming of Christ, the two Prophets Enoch and Elijah will

come again and they will prophecy for three and a half years (Rev.

11:3). When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out

of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them,

and kill them (Rev. 11:7). After three-and-a-half days the breath of

life from God shall enter them, and they shall come back to life, and

great fear shall fall upon those who killed them. They will ascend

into heaven in a cloud (Rev. 11:12).

In the New Testament Christ Himself used the Prophet Elijah as an

example to describe the zeal of St. John, the Baptist. He will also go

before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of

the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the

just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:17).

When our Lord was asked by His disciples: Why then do the scribes

say that Elijah must come first? He replied saying: Indeed, Elijah is

coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah

has come already, and they did not know him but did to him

whatever they wished (Matth. 17:12). For all the prophets and the

law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is

Elijah who is to come (Matth. 11:13-14).

Today, our Holy Orthodox Church throughout the world celebrates

the feast day of the Prophet Elijah. In his simplicity of heart and love

for the true God of his forefathers Elijah stood up against evil men of

worldly power who changed the true Faith into falsehood and

worshipped Baal. In our days, the Prophet Elijah is still preaching to

the people of God repentance.

Today, Elijah says to us, "Turn your hearts to the Lord in purity of

the true Faith and do not allow false teachings to enter into your

hearts."

Today, the Prophet of God cries out to us saying, "Let no one

worship the false gods of Baal! Let no one bow before idols of the

twentieth century. Man turned away from God, worships as false

gods: money, pleasures of the flesh, riches and earthly possessions!"

Today, the Prophet Elijah cries out to us saying: "The Lord God is

alive and He will judge His people according to their deeds. Repent

and turn to His Loving kindness and you shall see His wonders."

Today, more than two thousand and eight hundred (2,800) years

have passed from the time that the Prophet Elijah preached and still

he is alive in Heaven and his voice is heard within the Church. Let us

hear his voice. Let us turn to God. Let us leave our wicked nature

behind us. Let us glorify Christ our God through a virtuous life, and

let us cry out: Truly the Lord is God; he is God (III Kings 18:39).

We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces en-

durance, and endurance character, and character hope, and hope

does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured into

our hearts by the Holy Spirit. (Rom 5)

HE BUILT HIMSELF A HOUSE OUT OF WORDS

One young man had many words, but no place to live. So he decided

to build himself a house out of words. He began to put word after

word, word after word, and built a house for himself. He

went into his house and looked around: there was a floor and the

roof in place, and the walls with windows were good, but somehow it

was empty inside. He filled the house with all the utensils from top

to bottom, so he wouldn't be able to turn around. It was empty

anyway. Then the young man went to get advice from an old man.

"Why is my house so empty?" he asked.

And the old man said:

"You're missing one word."

"So tell me the word," the young man said.

"You won't be able to hear it now," the old man said.

"Why not?" The young man was surprised.

"Because you have many words," the old man said.

"So what am I supposed to do?" the young man asked.

"I don't know," the old man smiled and fell silent.

The young man returned to his house. He sat down and sat silently.

But he could not take it any longer:

"The old man hid something from me!"

He went back to the old man again. He saw that the old man's house

had disappeared, and there was a new house, all white, and a cross

on top of it.

The man came into this house, and saw nothing: only scaffolding on

the walls and some people inside. Somehow it wasn't empty.

Meanwhile, there was a man talking about something in the

middle of this house. The young man listened and heard: "And the

Word was God". The young man did not understand anything. He

went back to his house, sat down and looked at his walls

and windows. And then he remembered what he had heard in that

strange house. And he wanted to repeat it: "And the Word was God."

As soon as he said these words, his whole house melted as if it were

ice.

The young man glanced around and saw the vast open space, while

in the distance he could see a white house with a cross at the top,

and right in front of it the old man stood and smiled:

"Well, is it empty now?"

"No, it's not," the young man said. "So what do I do now?"

"Do what you want to do," the old man said. "If you want to talk,

talk, if you want to keep quiet, keep quiet, if you want to build

something, do it."

"Then what do I build out of?" the young man was surprised.

"Out of what's on your hands. The interior work in that white house

had just begun."

The young man looks and again does not understand anything: the

old man is quite young, and on his chest he has the same exact cross

as on the white house. How could he not see it before!

When the Spirit of God descends upon a man and overshadows him

with the fullness of His outpouring, then his soul overflows with an

indescribable joy, for the Holy Spirit turns to joy whatever He

touches. The Kingdom of Heaven is peace and joy in the Holy

Spirit. Acquire the Spirit of Peace, and thousands around you will

be saved.

8 Simple Suggestions From Elder Paisios For

Our Spiritual Growth

The following is advice Elder

Paisios gave on spiritual

growth after he was asked

for his blessing by a visitor:

1. You must take care of the

purification of your soul on a

daily basis.

2. You must acquire divine

justice and not logic, for only

then the grace of our Christ

will come to you.

3. Before you do something,

think if Christ wants you to;

then, act accordingly.

4. You must perfectly practice obedience, so you may later talk to

others about the virtue of obedience.

5. The "no" you say to people must be "no", and the "yes" must be

"yes". Do not pretend, but say whatever you think, even if it hurts

the other person; say it in a good manner, however, and also give

some explanations.

6. You must have and maintain this spiritual dignity; always pay

attention to what pleases your fellow monks and not to what pleases

yourself.

7. Everyday, you should read a section from the New Testament for

the purification of your soul.

8. Do not look at what other people do, or examine how, and why

they do it.

Your own goal is the purification of your soul and the perfect

submission of your mind to divine grace. So everything for the sake

of your goal; pray, study, say humbly the Jesus prayer, being aware

that you absolutely need God's mercy. In other words, pay attention

to your spiritual work.

4. The Sacrament of Reconciliation. or Confession. tears up the

promissory notes. It destroys the record of our sins. The

Communion of the true Body and Blood of Christ gives us the

power to be born again spiritually. Although this does not occur

immediately, and is perhaps imperceptible to us: the kingdom of

God cometh not with observation (Luke 17:20); yet there is no

doubt that this rebirth will happen sooner or later. and we will

begin a new life, a life in Christ.

5. We know the power of fasting and its significance at least from

the fact that it is somehow particularly hated by our enemy the devil.

6. Prayer begins with an effort of the soul. The mind listens to the

words of prayer. Then the meaning of prayer touches the human

spirit, and the spirit rejoices, driven by the divine power of prayer.

7. Prayer is difficult because it is opposed by our old self. It is also

difficult because the evil one resists a praying man with all his

might. To the devil, prayer is the foretaste of death, though of

course he is already dead spiritually. However, prayer strikes him

again, and that is why he resists it in every way. Even saints find

prayer difficult at times, even though you'd think that they would

only be comforted by it. Indeed, prayer brings with it a great

comfort, not only to a righteous person, but also to a sinner.

O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will.
