September 11th — Catechetical Sunday As school resumes, our attention is drawn to our commitment to teaching and learning the Truth of our Christian Faith, and how to re-late it to our everyday life. Parents have the responsibility as primary teachers in the family to

provide for their children’s education—religious as well as secular. Most rely upon a formal setting, with classes conducted by a trained teacher.

The third Sunday in September is so called “Catechetical Sunday” to remind us of the necesity of religious education. What better way to open the school year than to acknowledge that what we need to be is a reflection of our belief in God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit—Trinity. We are to know our faith forward and back—so that no matter where we go, we go in the Name of God. We go so we may express “God Is With Us!”

Jesus rules over all. We must respond by giving evidence that he rules over us, and the way we treat others. When our lives reflect our belief, we show others we are aware of the wisdom of the ages—yesterday, today, and tomorrow as we prepare for all eternity.

“Catechetical Sunday” reaffirms our commitment to the awesome task of stu-dents and teachers to bring Christ to life in each parishioner. In prayer we renew our efforts to provide the opportunity to learn from Christ — The Teacher.

We entrust our catechists with the sacred obligation to instruct our children and youth in the spirit of change that Christ can give, and ask God’s blessing upon them. Likewise we ask God to grant these students the spirit of a willing desire to learn their lessons well, so that they may, in turn be teachers in a special way to the world that they encounter.

We entrust our catechists with the sacred obligation to instruct parents and adults to make them prepared of the sublime task to be guide and example of life to younger generations lured by temptations and worldly excitements to be pulled away from God.

In our parish, Catechism classes begin Thursday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m. for the following:

LORD, FORGIVE ME WHEN I WHINE!

Today, upon a bus, I saw a lovely girl with golden hair, I envied her… she seemed so gay ... and I wished I were so fair. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. She had one leg, and wore a crutch. But as she passed a smile! Oh, God forgive me when I whine, I have two legs. The world is mine!

I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him. He seemed so glad. If I were late it’ would do no harm. And as I left, he said to me: "I thank you. You have been so kind. It' nice to ta1k with folks like you. You see" he said, "I’m blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two eyes. The world is mine.

Later, while walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue. He stood and watched the others play. He did not know what to do. I stop−ped a moment, then I said, "Why don't you join the others, dear?" He looked ahead without a word, and then I knew he could not hear. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two ears. The world is mine.

With feet to take me where I'd go, with eyes to see the sunset's glow, with ears to hear what I would know … OH, GOD, FORGIVE ME WHEN I WHINE! I'm blessed indeed. The world is mine!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION One of the greatest concerns of every nation and civilized country Is the educa-

tion of youth. Large sums of money are set aside for the construction of schools, colleges and universities. Also a large portion of tax money is assigned for educational programs. Everywhere schools become centres of human knowledge. They offer to pupils great treasures of arts end science, crafts and technology, which contribute to the development and expansion of civilization in every country. Education prepares young boys and girls for various professions in life.

Modern youth is growing up between two worlds or rather living in a divided world. The world in which we are living is divided by many conflicts. There is poverty in the midst of plenty; slavery and freedom: progress and decline; morality and im-moral1ty; Christianity end atheism. Since we are living in this highly organized society, we must learn to adjust to the times, people and environment, but we must also strive to Christianize the world and make people aware of their purpose of human life.

If we glance at the world today, we shall notice many people wandering about without any ideals or purpose in life. We shall find many abuses, crimes, riots, strikes, etc., which indicate that our modern society needs reforming, a turning to a better. Where should this reform begin? Primarily in the home. From there it should be contin-ued in the school. However, many modern schools, although equipped with the finest laboratories and libraries, do not take into consideration every aspect of human life, namely, physical, intellectual, emotional and moral.

The Board of Education provides excellent physical education programs and cur-ricula for developing the mind and body. Most of the subjects taught in school are in-tended to encourage the pursuit of learning in order that we acquire sufficient knowl-

edge and practical skills to know how to manage our daily life. Today our everyday life has be-come very complicated. Despite the progress which modern education has stimulated, there are many problems science and technology cannot solve, such as problems of conscience, problems of dealing with justice, honesty, right to life, etc. Why is there so much chaos and evil in our mod-ern society? It is because our public schools have not provided a Christian Education.

Christian education prepares us for future life, that we become fully aware and ready to take on responsibilities towards God and men. The aim of Christian Education at school is to prepare students for future 1ife in this world and for eternity. It is a means of attaining our eternal destiny for which we have been created by God.
