As the weather is getting hotter, I've started eating

a popsicle everyday. One day, I was eating my tasty popsicle at Seven-11. A little boy stood there and watched me eating my popsicle for quite a while. Poor little boy, I couldn't bear seeing a little kid just stand there, craving for my popsicle. So I gave him a chair and said to him, “Why don’t you sit down and watch.”

In a University physics class, the professor was explaining

a quite complicated concept. A student sitting at the back interrupted him.

“Why do we have to learn all this?” the young man blurted out.

“To save lives.” answered the professor.

After a few minutes, that student spoke up again, “how does physics save lives?”The professor stared at him for a long time. “Physics saves lives,” he said, “because it keeps idiots out of medical school.”

final Resolution Verdict Six months ago these guys joined our New Year resolution challenge team and vowed to reach their goal. Their terms have just finished and here are their final results.

1. did you reach your resolution goal?

2. Why did you (not) reach your goal? Where did it go wrong?

3. Will you continue with your resolution in the future?

chriS noSeWorthy1. No, I didn't.

2. At first, I did pretty well but, after failing the first time, I found myself continuously postponing the next quit date. I started making excuses to justify my procrastination (too busy/stressed this week, next week will be more convenient, I'll quit after I start riding my bike to work, I should start dieting first, etc). I think that was my biggest mistake. It will never be the "perfect time" to quit, so I should've just committed myself and done it.

3. Absolutely. I don't want to be a smoker forever. I've just finished a great book called "The Power of Habit" (by Charles

Duhigg). It's given me a lot of insight into the nature of habits, and I've been putting it into practice with some other bad habits. Hopefully these "small wins" will give me the confidence to tackle smoking for good.

ian hayneS1. Yes! My resolution goal wound up changing a bit from a number based weight to more of a size and strength goal. I increased my weight to 77kg, I feel stronger and people have told me I look a lot bigger, so I would say I reached my goal.

2. I moved away from the commercial gym and into a local private dojo founded by my friend Jordan. We moved the dojo into my own place where I started coordinating group pumps about 4 times a week. It’s an old school style CrossFit + free weights training with a barbell and a few dumbbells. I recently adopted the Bruce Lee regimen and have had even better results.

There were some difficult months. There was sickness, traveling, and other personal issues that made it hard to stay dedicated. Even though I never fully stopped, sometimes it was hard to get many workouts in, and as anyone has tried will know it is very easy to slide backwards. However, I really buckled down in the last few months and have seen serious improvement.

3. I do plan to continue working out. Now my body is used to getting regular intensive exercise and I feel like I need it. I feel great and my desire to improve has only grown. I’m already getting pumped for next summer.

1. No. I failed.

2. I was confident when I just started going to the gym. It was actually not bad. With proper diet control and workouts, I lost 4 kg after the first few months. But then it

became more and more difficult to keep the routine for all sorts of reasons. I did less and less workout, and my weight came back to the previous stage eventually.

3. Yes I will keep going with this resolution. It should be a long-term goal to lose weight. I haven’t reached what the doctor called a “healthy weight”, so I thought I’d keep trying. Therefore, I will continue doing some simple movements such as running; stay away from desserts and carbon drinks. In fact, I am not a big fan of desserts!

1. 没有!

Geraldo Pizzato 1. Unfortunately, I could not achieve my goal.

2. I had to stop my classes, for work reasons. Also, another obstacle was my hearing problem (physical problem has already been solved).

3. I intend to continue my lessons in July. Requires a lot of discipline and I hope I can keep my plan to learn Chinese.

andréa Pizzato1. I think my English has improved a lot.

2. However it's necessary increase the number of classes per week. I think this detracted the advance of my learning. The classes are not as frequent as before.

In December, I could understand almost nothing and I was afraid of speaking English. Today, I feel great about that difference. I understand very well and I am more confident to speak.

I do not know exactly if I reached my goal. Honestly, I don't remember the exactly number of words I was supposed to learn. But I'm sure I improved and learned a lot. My English is much better!

3. Yes I definitely will continue learning English!

1st: GermanyWhy? Because they are super strong a team.

2nd: MexicoWhy? Because they party hard.

3rd: Costa RicaWhy? They have great fans (stronger than the team).

1st: Netherlands. Why? Because they have a solid team, spirit and great determination.

2nd: GermanyWhy? Because they have wealth of experience. Besides I think it’s time for them to take a step forward after placing 3rd in previous 2 editions.

3rd: BrazilWhy? I feel it would compensate them for having been the host country and restore some of their past glories as one of the best football nations in the World Cup.

Coffee, Teaand a Patiofor Thee

My Stomping GroundsFirst I took a walk to some places around my home turf on Nanjing Lu. I went past

the Café Inn’s outdoor patio and then over to May 4th Square where I saw that

THEDINER | SPARK CAFÉ & BREWERY has gotten itself some new outdoor furniture.

I also saw that just past there is a new café/bar that may be worth checking out.

Next I jogged over to Book City and stopped in at Old Jack’s, which is now open

from 10am and is serving coffee and cake. Rumor has it a sandwich shop will open

next door and customers are welcome to bring their sandwiches back to Old Jack’s

and can enjoy a cold drink with their lunch.

Marina CityAfter spending a while inland, I decided to head towards the ocean and get a whiff

of sea breeze while checking out Marina City. I walked past the Pirate One Piece

store on my left, to then discover a neat little place called Lego Coffee (I love Legos

and their patio. But, think the two are unrelated.). After continuing toward the sea,

I walked past several places that seem promising before turning the corner and

encountering a venue that seems to be fairly popular called Café Bene.

I t’s now summer and outdoor patios, can be great places to spend a lazy afternoon, especially if you’re a people-watcher, as I am. Or you

may find that a quiet shady spot is more up your alley, outdoor patios have that covered as well. In fact, I’ve gone around town and taken a few snap-shots of some outdoor patios I thought might be fine places to while away a few hours.

Let’s go for a bite, a coffee, a drink. Let’s get it with ice, and with sweets (I think). Let’s sit here outside, at hotties, you’ll wink. Justin

Waulters kicks back at some of Qingdao’s best outdoor patios.

The Old TownSome friends once told me to not only go towards Daxue Lu but also get closer to the train station. I did, and found some great places with outdoor patio gardens. My favorite place here is ChunXiao Coffee. It is very quiet and homey. There is also the MiGao Coffee Bar which has a great garden and plenty of natural shade. Walking through Enjoy Café one might see that bringing a group of friends for a friendly round of badminton or Ping-Pong is not only possible but encouraged. Also, it is worth a short trip over to the Sunset Lounge not only for the comfortable outdoor seating and but the opportunity to meet some interesting people.

Jieling Liu knocks on the door of Italian Culture and enters a sweet and flavourful world at the Marina City.

"there are no beautiful flowered emblems on our gelatos and coffees – and they even look a bit

ugly, because we focus on the taste and quality." This line printed on a leaflet at the TRAST Gelato & Bar caught my eye.

There are 18 different flavours of gelato here including lemon, Nutella, chilly chocolate, mango and dark chocolate. The mango tastes fresh, natural, soft and smooth, like silk caressing your throat. The combination of dark chocolate and milk gives a perfect balance to your palate, sweet and bitter and soft and hard. But the Nutella and lemon flavours are the two standouts. Occasionally they even make gelato with mint and green tea flavours. Three sizes are available – big, medium and small (with the prices of 40 / 30 / 20元 respectively).

All the gelato are made by Elisabetta a young native Italian, who runs the business together with her husband,

Chenshuo Liu from Liaocheng, Shandong. Liu used to be a designer and he and Elisabetta met in Beijing, fell in love and now live happily in Qingdao making and selling gelato and representing the quintessence of traditional Italian cuisine and culture.

Located in the West wing of the Marina City and having opened last September, the Trast Gelato & Bar was originally named Trastevere after a famous area in Rome. However the name was too long for most people to remember. Later as Liu split half of the office space to sublet to another business owner, he also decided to split the name from the middle so that it was easier to remember. Therefore it became “Trast”, which also happens to be a homophonic for the word “trust”.

There’s more than gelato here - they also make some rare types of coffee, such as Bicerin and Corretto along with a small selection of cocktails.

So who will be the ones to rock the boat in Brazil this summer? Let’s takes a look at four of the teams poised to crash the party in 2014.

franceSome may protest at the decision to label the 1998 world champions ‘dark horses’, but a lot has happened in French football since then. Having said that, this team has been quietly building for some time now and, with the likes of Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba firing on

all cylinders, France have the chance to land themselves right back on the centre-stage of world football.

Key Man: Karim BenzemaMy Prediction: With a favourable Second Round draw, France has the pedigree to stay the distance.

KnoW your hiStory历史概览World Cup upsets (or ‘cupsets’, as they are cheekily referred to in England) are nothing new. Many will remember South Korea in 2002, who, even as hosts of the tournament, were expected to do a brief cameo in the Group Stage before retiring once the real competition got underway. The Koreans had other ideas, dumping out Italy and Spain before finally surrendering to a mightily relieved German side in the semi-finals.

And let’s not forget Cameroon’s performance at Italia ’90, which stunned the world and changed African football forever. Expected

to be whipping boys, the Indomitable Lions lived up to their nickname, roaring to the quarter-finals where they were finally slain by a resurgent England. Their incredible opening day scalp of world champions Argentina is widely considered to represent the moment African football came of age.

Those with memories stretching back a little farther may even recall the World Cup of 1966. It was here that North Korea, so mysterious and unfancied that one commentator even said that they ‘might as well have flown in from outer space’, shook the world by defeating Italy 1-0 en route to a very respectable quarter-finals exit.

With World Cup Fever gripping the world fans have been largely following the powerhouse teams from Europe and South America. But what about those lesser known teams that has also made World Cup History? Chris Lawrence recalls some of these momentous moments.

the World Cup party is in full swing and the eyes of the world are fixed on the likes of Brazil’s Neymar,

Argentina’s Lionel Messi, and Germany’s Thomas Müller as they vie to lead their teams to glory on the world’s biggest sporting stage. But the road to victory on July 13th is littered with banana skins. There are 32 teams in the competition and, aside from the usual footballing powerhouses; a few of the tournament’s upstarts will be quietly fancying their chances of gatecrashing Brazil’s party.

A few weeks ago, I was at a housewarming party at a friend’s place. The place was stocked with beer, cheese and crackers,

BBQ chicken wings and drinking games. We were playing a friendly game of beer pong where we filled the plastic playing cups half with tap water and we would drink out of our beer bottles if the other team sunk a ball. Every time a ball plopped into a cup everyone would say, “Drink from your beer bottle not from the cup… it’s tap water.” They said it as if the water was poisonous and never would have thought I’d see the day when beer was safer than water. So, it made me think, “Is the water in Qingdao really that dangerous, or are we just being overly dramatic?”

I found out that the majority of Qingdao’s water comes from Laixi. So I took a trip to get a first hand look at where our water comes from. Laixi is a small town on the outskirts of Qingdao. I visited the Chanzhi Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Shandong, which provides Qingdao with two thirds of its water through almost 100 kilometers of underground piping. There are 56 reservoirs that service water to local areas. It’s the largest water reservoir in Jiaodong Peninsula with a water capability of over 400 million cubic meters1.

Laixi is surround by rolling and hilly farmlands that rely heavily on the areas water source. Almost half of the water pollution in China is due to agricultural runoff from farmers which using excess amounts of nitrite containing fertilizers and pesticides2. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 75% of all disease in China stems from water pollution. So many pollutants that may find their way into your water and then become ingested could have a detrimental impact on your health.

BelGiuMA familiar face at the finals, many are predicting that this could be the year Belgium finally go from perennial to main stage competitors. There is quality running right through this team, with the creativity of Eden Hazard and power of Romalu Lukaku capable of causing problems for any opposition. Add to that the safe hands of prodigious goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and here we have a team the big boys will all be hoping to avoid.

Key Man: Vincent KompanyMy Prediction: Quarter finals, at least.

coloMBiaAppearing at the finals for the first time in 16 years, many would be forgiven for writing Colombia off. But those who’ve tracked their qualifying campaign know that the Colombia of 2014 is a force to be reckoned with. Once famous for Carlos Valderrama’s gravity-defying hairstyles, this team is now gaining recognition for the right reasons – as a technically-gifted outfit who finished just behind Lionel Messi’s Argentina in qualifying and are now set to make a serious impression on the finals. Watch this space.

Key Man: James Rodriguez My Prediction: If they can top their group, this side can scrap their way to the semis. Then who knows?

iVory coaStAfrica’s biggest hope for success in the finals, the Elephants are a lethal mix of pace, power and no small amount of skill. Midfield maestro Yaya Toure and the talismanic Didier Drogba know a thing or two about winning trophies at the highest level, and they’ll be hoping that their experience can fire their team to glory in Brazil.

Key Man: Yaya ToureMy Prediction: Expect the Elephants to stampede their way to the quarter-finals.

Boiled Water ProS: Boiling water is the most common and inexpensive way to treat tap or unclean water in China to make it drinkable.

conS: Boiling water does not necessarily clean or remove harmful substances from water. It can kill bacteria and microorganisms, but certain types of parasites, spores, and cysts may still exist in the water. Also, there can be leftover chemicals and heavy metals in the water such as Lead, Copper and Mercury.

Barreled Water ProS: It’s one of the cheapest ways to get drinkable water delivered to your house or office. For twelve coupons you get twelve barrels delivered right to your doorstep and costs around 120 RMB.

conS: Even though the water has been bottled, the barrels are recycled and may contain Bisphenol A, which can put you at risk for a myriad of health problems2. Barreled water usually has a shelf life of three to seven days. After a week the water barrels can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

reVerSe oSMoSiS (ro) filtration SySteMProS: Reverse Osmosis (RO) filters removes a lot of pollutants from drinking water as it uses a semipermeable membrane to separate clean water from contaminated water. The wasted water is then discharged down a drainage or sewage pipe.

conS: RO filters usually waste more water than they produce clean drinking water. It will waste several liters of water for each liter it filters. Also, the RO system removes 90 percent of total dissolved solids, and can filter out nutritious minerals like calcium.

carBon BlocK Water filter ProS: Filters heavy metals and volatile organic chemicals including chlorine, fluoride and bacteria and keeps healthy substances in your drinking water. Plus it doesn’t waste water, or require electricity to use. Multipure carbon block filters are one of the best filters in the market for residential and commercial use.

conS: It takes up counter space and you need a secondary faucet for your sink. In some cities it is hard to find in malls and department stores.

W ith quality interior design, it can evoke the feeling of comfort and freedom, as well as hope and motivation for a

better life. It shouldn't intimidate or paralyze you with exaggerated colours or dazzling tricks. Among the various schools of interior design, the American style of decorating is perhaps the most popular with its relaxed approach to living. As well as this, its array of natural colours not only helps with relaxation but also emphasizes quality and functionality.

The apartment shown is an example. This apartment is currently ocupied by a Chinese couple that live a modest yet steady life with their parents and children. The apartment’s design was created by Glamor Interior Design Studio. Since three generations are living together in this apartment, the design should not only be sustainable but also cater to aesthetic and practical needs. Therefore, the designer put together a theme that is simple, bright and comfortable.

The colour palette of the apartment uses several earthy colours including beige and coffee and is decorated with small accessories – white branches and small yellow vases. All the walls and furniture have had environmentally friendly and odorless paint

applied. Since there are plenty of windows in every room, the artificial lighting in the house only serves as a secondary light source. Instead of a main light in the bedroom there are numerous of small side lights, which is also better from a Fengshui point of view.

Living with family is noteasy. It takes a lot of effort to share a modest amount

of space and make everyone feel comfortable at the same time. Jieling Liu expands her

horizons with some inspirational interior design.

• If the major colour scheme of the apartment uses light or pastel shades, you should choose furniture and accessories that are in similar but lighter or darker colours to create a pleasant visual effect.

• Choose furniture based on its function rather than its appearance (height and length-adjustable tables for example).

• As well as paintings and crafts to decorate your apartment, try experimenting with small items, such as dry branches and leaves.

REnTing An ApARTMEnT in QingDAo

Being a newly arrived foreigner or newcomer to Qingdao is not easy, especially when you also have to find a place to rent and call home. But before you sign on the dotted line, Real Estate agent Kaka offers some helpful advice on renting.

1. When renting an apartment, the post-rental service is more important than a good apartment, so make sure you

have a good agent or landlord, especially if your Chinese language is limited.

2. Find out as much information about the apartment and the complex you are thinking of living in as you

can. You may face extra costs that would be easier to deal with if you knew about them in advance. For example the property maintenance fee might be ridiculously high, or you have may have no heating during the winter because you didn’t pay the winter heating fee. (You must let the heating company know if you want heating before October 10, after which there is no changing your mind).

3. Decide on your payment method according to your situation up front. Don’t be surprised if the landlord

asks you for one years rent in advance. More and more Chinese and foreigners are flooding into Qingdao every day making the rental market increasingly competitive; in turn, landlords have more choice with their preferred payment method and tenants.

4. Check to see if the facilities in the apartment are in working order. Generally, if something is broken

during your contract the landlord will place the blame on you. Talk to your landlord in detail before you sign a contract, make sure everything is working properly and ask if any broken objects can be fixed or replaced. Also, take photos as evidence just in case as complications can arise.

5. If something is broken during your contract that you cannot fix yourself, contact your landlord or

agent immediately and try and find an honest professional repairman who won’t overcharge you.

6. Pay your bills on time. For example, if you haven’t paid your electricity bill, don’t be surprised if your

power gets cut off. If you followed the first

tip and have a good agent or landlord, this process will be a lot easier. Alternatively, if you are fortunate enough to have a trusted Ayi (cleaner) you could ask her to take care of the bills for you.

7. Keep on good terms with your landlord. There are many benefits in keeping in touch but most

importantly it will help you get your security deposit back when your contract ends, as long as your apartment doesn’t look like a hotel room for a touring Punk Rock band.

8. Make sure the landlord is the original Landlord. When you sign a contract, he or she should provide

you with the property ownership certificate, household register and ID card - not only because of safety issues, but you will also need those documents to register at the police station if you are a foreigner.

Beach Head

Qingdao is blessed with many options for ocean swimming. Mark Lewis gives you a run down on its more popular beaches.

For those ocean swimmers who have been quietly biding their time through the long winter months…your time has finally arrived. With

the pervasive hot and sultry summer weather there’s never a better time to take that first plunge into the cool ocean waters that surround Qingdao.

No 1 Bathing Beach is the biggest and busiest of Qingdao’s inner city beaches and offers a range of diversions from paddleboats to food stalls selling an assortment of grilled seafood to activities for the kids. It’s also a great place to get fit as it boasts an outdoor beach gym (with change room and locker facilities) and dedicated sea-lanes for swimmers. Although it’s a big beach (maybe a kilometre long) it can get ridiculously busy and crowded during the summer months, especially during the Qingdao Beer Festival in August.

Best features: Has a great beach culture with a lively vibe; there’s always something to do.Worst features: It can get unbelievably busy and crowded during the summer months.

No 2 Bathing Beach is the ‘little sister’ of Qingdao’s beaches and extremely popular with wedding couples and photographers. Bordering on the Badaguan scenic area; it’s one of my favourites places aside from Shirloaren Beach for an after work swim. Rather than having dedicated swimming lanes, the swimming area around the beach head is bordered by a long pier in the west, long wooden ‘sea piers’ in the north and the natural rock coastline on the eastern end.

Best features: Clean, picturesque, beautiful, and tranquil; it doesn’t get as busy as other beaches.Worst features: The water can get a little rough when the wind picks up and you might feel a bit intimidated with all the wedding photographers.

Conveniently close to the Qingdao’s CBD towards Taiping Cape, No 3 Bathing Beach is not a bad choice for an after work swim. A comparatively smaller beach at around 500 m long, you’ll see its swimming lanes stretching out into the sea marked by colourful buoys. Its facilities include change rooms with showering facilities and across the street from the beach are BBQ seafood restaurants at which you can satisfy your post swim munchies.

Best features: Close to the Centre of the Qingdao Business District.Worst features: Unfortunately, not the cleanest of beaches.

No 6 Bathing Beach is located close to the Old Town and features the newly refurbished Zhanqiao Pier with new beach sand (perhaps). Extremely popular with locals and tourists alike, you can see people engaged in different beach activities; from children clambering over rocks with a red plastic bucket in hand collecting sea life to middle aged business men playing a round of beach volleyball.

Best features: It is easily accessible from the Old Town. Worst features: It’s a heavily rock-strewn beach, which doesn’t make it that great for wading or ocean swimming.

Shilaoren or Old Stone Man Beach - gets its name from a natural rock feature rising from the sea. It is probably the (relatively) cleanest beach in Qingdao due to its small army of dedicated litter collectors. It’s currently my regular haunt for ocean swimming and you can even catch a couple of decent waves. When the wind gets up you see wind kite enthusiasts skimming over the waves on their boards. Speedboats and jet skis are available for rental as well as beach tents for the modestly inclined to change in. Be warned; its popular with tourists and even more popular with thieves.

Fortunately there are locker facilities available.

Best features: Relatively clean and beautiful beach.Worst features: Thieves are active in the area.

JinShatan Jinshatan or Golden Sand Beach is a bit of a hike to get to as it’s located in the Huangdao District, but still worth a visit.

taiWan lu BeachA very small almost ‘boutique’

beach, less of a swim venue, it’s a great place to meet with friends for a picnic.

Page 15: REDSTAR JULY 2014

W ith more than 20 rides on offer, the Golden Beach Amusement Park crammed into a space the size of a

soccer field, reminded me of an American carnival transplanted to China.

As I walked through the park, I passed by the Haunted House building with a 5-D horror movie show and a photo shoot inside Jaws' gaping mouth. I'm not sure what 5-D was exactly, but standing inside a shark's mouth would have been fun. Then I saw a pirates' boat with a Pirates of the Caribbean label depicting five alluring women with bandannas and daggers. I guess Jack Sparrow didn't make the cut.

Now the hard part - deciding which rides to try - with my budget of 60元, I didn't have too many options. Most rides were part of a package deal so rather than paying full price for one ride, you could try four or five different rides and only pay half price.

After some vacillation, I finally chose the "Screamin' Machine" over the rollercoaster.

I had ridden many rollercoaster before. So I walked over to the "Screamin' Machine," which was basically a 7m high metal machine that rotates you forwards and backwards. The backwards part was fairly tame, but going forwards was more unnerving. I felt like my chest restraint would unlatch at any opportune moment leading to my imminent death.

Then I went from the most thrilling ride to the most nauseating one I like to call the "Spinning Sunflower of Death." After the bar restraint snapped in place, the “Sunflower” began spinning. At first I enjoyed the rotating motion. But as the speed increased, I began to feel nauseous as the coloured seats spun in front of me. I felt unwelcome tremors in my stomach and suddenly imagined the dumplings I had for lunch exiting my mouth and splattering the seat in front of me.

My body was still spinning as I went on to the Laser Bumper cars. All I remember from that ride was bumping the other cars vigorously and aimlessly shooting the laser gun. Then we went to "Skyfall," a ride that pulls you up fast

and drops you down even quicker.

The last ride was "Mr. Octopus" with seats dangling from its bumpy, green tentacles. I was afraid this would be another deadly stomach spinner, but instead it was a pleasant, peaceful ride. Now I was ready to win some prizes.

Most of the games at the prize booth were typical carnival fare: tossing rings onto glass bottles, throwing darts at balloons and throwing hula-hoops around an inflatable crocodile. I chose the hula-hoops. I had six to throw, and if they all went around the croc, I would win a teddy bear bigger than my sister. Sadly I only threw five around the croc and had to choose a monkey with an "I Love You" patch pinned on his chest. Not bad for 10元.Later, I talked to a worker at the prize booth, and she told me “She loved how her job brought joy to others”. Another worker said he enjoyed seeing visitors display a gamut of emotions and meeting beautiful women. I think I had satisfied him with the former but had to disappoint him with the latter.

WE ArE nOt AmusEd

You may have heard that Golden Beach is one of the best beaches in Qingdao. But what you may not know about is its unique feature - an Amusement Park. Paul Finkbeiner relays his stomach churning adventures at the Golden Beach Amusement Park.

myredstar.com 2928 myredstar.com

The backwards part was fairly tame, but

going forwards was more unnerving. I felt like my chest restraint would unlatch at any opportune moment leading to my imminent death.

Coroline Wang, a creative singer songwriter, has recorded her life’s dreams, love, feelings and travelling experiences in her music as each of

her songs depicts a short segment or story for her life.

Her voice can range from soft and sensitive to being husky; it will whisper around your ears to the accompaniment of her guitar. Even within her jazz arrangements, you can hear her happiness and sadness through her singing. Summer afternoons or silent nights, her songs are truly balm for the soul. Christina Cao

Over 150,000 Chinese students are going overseas to attend university every year. AJ Warner

wants to make sure that some more of them are equipped to succeed.

In 2005, Warner began counseling Chinese students businesspeople as they applied to top US MBA programs abroad. Over the past nine years, as the demand for overseas university and graduates programs has grown, Warner’s company, Touchdown! has become a full-service test prep, counseling, and coaching operation for high school and college students seeking to make the most of their overseas education experience.

In 2013, Touchdown! helped nearly 300 students gain admission to and prepare for success at universities including MIT, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Fordham, Columbia, UCLA, London School of Economics and Political Science, Monash University, University of Toronto, HKUST, NUS, University of Sydney, HEC, and many more in the US, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU.

While a myriad of study abroad agencies aim at increasing their market share through a rabid sales force, Touchdown! has chosen instead to develop a team of professional counselors, who are trained to empower customers to make the most of their future. Previous clients refer nearly 80% of Touchdown!'s clients every year. It’s an approach that places certain constraints on the company’s growth, but one which that also ensures that they are able to deliver the highest quality on to match their claims.

It was discovered that boys between the ages of 10 and 14, before their voices changed, could often display

surprisingly pure yet powerful singing with clear and transparent tones, “Voices from Heaven”, it is one of the reasons why Boys Choral Singing is still amongst the most popular of world-class Children's choirs.

Jorgen Bremholm founded The Danish Boys' Choir (Det Danske Drengekor) in 1943. The singers in the choir range from 9 to 15 years in age and although there are no specific criteria for recruitment, they must train for a long time before they even allowed to set foot on the stage. And although the members of the choir have changed over the past 60 years, their sound is still fresh and touching. The choir has not only retained its classical musical repertoire, but has also incorporated some new elements in their shows with songs from other countries also being performed.

When they come to Qingdao, besides their Nordic folk ballads, they will also sing several Chinese classical songs including Jasmine, The Same Song, Good Luck and others to entertain local audiences. Christina Cao

rhythmic drumming disturbs the morning silence of Fayuan Temple. The temple cats have yet to emerge from the courtyard

gardens when a line of saffron-clad monks shuffle into the main hall for morning prayer. They are joined by a host of faithful followers, some wearing the traditional brown cloaks signifying lay adherents, all murmuring sutras in the early hours of the morning.

Fayuan Temple has been a centre of Buddhist worship since the Tang Dynasty. Because of this, it’s widely considered the “oldest” temple in Beijing, though nothing survives from the earliest eras. It was first burned

down by the marauding Mongolian army (who promptly rebuilt the temple once they settled down in Beijing) and has been destroyed several times since. The current structure largely dates from the Qing Dynasty.

While there might be more atmospheric temples within Beijing, Fayuan is by far the most active. The temple gardens are less than immaculate, though they have a “lived-in” feeling that is missing from many other temples in Beijing. On any given day, youthful acolyte monks and some less youthful believers mill about the temple grounds. Groups of worshippers wave incense sticks and bow before the statuary of the main hall.

During festival days the temple can become absolutely packed when the faithful of all ages crowd into the courtyards, reciting chants and prayers that resonate outside the temple gates.

Don’t miss the marble steles topped with exquisitely carved dragons in front of the main hall. Further beyond lies the Hall of Great Compassion, which holds a number of artifacts including some of the oldest Buddhist sculptures in China dating back to the Han Dynasty.

Fayuan also houses an elite Buddhist academy that trains some of the finest religious minds in China. Monks who graduated from here

usually gain respectable positions back with their home temples. The academy itself is a recent feature as it only dates from 1956 but has nevertheless become an important seat of Buddhist scholarship in China.

If you are lucky, or are particularly chatty with one of the monks, you might be invited to join a meal in their cafeteria. Do not pass up the opportunity to eat home-style temple food. It’s vegetarian, of course, but you might not notice this at first as the cooks are skilled at “faking” meat by seasoning and preparing tofu in such a way to mimic the taste and texture of meat. It’s also a rare chance to witness the quiet and disciplined way that monks take their meals. Even the placement of chopsticks and bowls reveals everything from a desire for a second helping to the end of their repast.

To visit the temple, take Beijing’s Line 4 to Caishikou Station. Walk south along Caishikou Street until you hit Nanheng West. Head west until you come across a small park on your right-hand side. This is apparently the site of the original temple. Just beyond is the front gate of Fayuan. Tickets are around 5元.

Fresh Green on the Fingertips

One of the first things that come to my mind when I think of China is TEA. After all, this is where the practice of boiling the leaves first

originated, and it is still the largest producer of tea in the world. Wanting to experience the beginning of the tea drinking process first hand, I jumped at the chance to go on a day trip picking tea around Laoshan.

My classmates and I joined a tour group arranged by Tianren Huwai (天仁戶外), and after a 45-minute ride on a tour bus we arrived at the tea garden. A short uphill walk amid views of terraced mountainsides brought us to a building surrounded by knee-high tea plants and cherry trees. We were then given plastic bags, and instructed on how to pick the tea leaves.

The tea plant is covered in leaves, but only the top 1-2 inches of the mature plant are picked. It was stressed we needed to pick a bud and leaf together, as separating these made for much more expensive tea. This bud and leaf are called a flush. And the best method of picking

is to grab a flush at its base, and pull straight up. This separates it cleanly from the rest of the plant, and avoids breaking the leaves as pinching or bending might do.

I found repeating the same motion over and over amongst the beautiful scenery, with the sun shining and breeze blowing, very relaxing.

Very soon after our tea was picked, it began to wilt. The different basic types of teas commonly produced (white, green, oolong, red, black) are different based on their level of fermentation, or how long this wilting is allowed to continue. The longer the time, the darker the color and the ‘stronger’ the tea. Green tea is an unfermented variety, so our picked leaves were set aside to be baked and packaged later that very same day.

You can bring your own lunch, or for an additional 50元 you can have the meal provided by the garden owners. For us, this included as much baozi as we could eat and several authentic Chinese dishes. Many of

these dishes were plant based, and came from the mountain behind us. Hào chī!

After lunch, the group hiked up the mountainside that we had been working on. About two-thrids of the way to the top and back took around 2 hours. Unlike many of the mountain excursions in China, there are no stairs to be seen, just small dirt paths. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and beware the low foliage and occasional boulder to be climbed!

When the group returned, we pooled our picked tea leaves together in order to have them baked. This process was done by one of the garden’s workers in a large heated basin. After turning on the heat, she poured in our raw leaves and stirred them around with her hands. As she continued stirring steam could be seen rising as the leaves’ moisture was released, and a faint smell began to permeate the air. There are many smells to be had in China, but the smell of green tea leaves being baked has to be one of the best.

Kelsey Bagwill, a solid fan of Chinese tea culture, goes with her classmates to explore the the lively wilderness of Laoshan and pick some fascinating tea buds.

Coming Home Directed by Zhang Yimou

Z hang Yimou's Under the Hawthorn Tree (2010) used the Cultural Revolution as the backdrop for a rote and over determined teen

melodrama. Coming Home grapples with the same era in a more credible way, though "credible" might not be an entirely apt word. Persecuted intellectual Lu Yanshi (Chen Daoming) is released from prison after the Cultural Revolution and finds that wife Feng Wanyu (Gong Li) has a dramatically convenient form of amnesia: she remembers a husband, but doesn't recognize Lu.

The historical setting lends some resonance to the Lu-Feng story, but like Hawthorn Tree's tragic romance, it could take place anywhere, at any time, with only minor adjustments. More interesting is the relationship between Lu and his grown daughter Dandan (Zhang Huiwen), who ratted her father out to the authorities some years earlier. That Lu's most visible tormentor is his own daughter highlights the fanaticism of the period, but it also simplifies the messy business of the Cultural Revolution—a conflict within and between virtually all segments of society—by portraying reconciliation as the restoration of family bonds.

So credit to the filmmakers for their unexpected ending, which asserts that even this degree of reconciliation may be impossible—not for lack of will, but because too much was lost and too much is already forgotten. Coming Home thus proves far more successful than Hawthorn Tree at integrating tear-jerking melodrama with historical enquiry, and marks a modest return to form for a director who's long needed one. Josh Martin

Josh Martin looks back at some classic Cultural Revolutionary themed films from Chinese Cinema.

the critical and commercial success of Zhang Yimou's Coming Home (reviewed in this issue) shows that the Cultural Revolution still holds plenty of interest for local moviegoers. Despite political sensitivities and censorship issues, there's still an impressive number of films on the period, some of which—King of the

Children, Farewell My Concubine, The Blue Kite, To Live—remain well known abroad. But many others have either lost their international luster or never had much of one to begin with. A few of these are highlighted below:

eVeninG rain (1980, directors Wu Yigong & Wu Yonggang)

The early '80s were the heyday of the Cultural Revolution film, with Evening Rain as a cross-generational entry in the cycle. Wu Yigong was a member of the "Fourth Generation," the first class of the Beijing Film Academy after its 1978 reopening. Wu Yonggang (no relation) was the septuagenarian director of classics like

The Goddess (1934). Their collaboration feels like a transitional work, adhering to Mao-era notions of broad social types and collective heroism: a teacher, a worker, a poor girl, and other "representative" figures meet on board a ferry and come to the aid of a wrongfully persecuted poet. Like many films of its time, Evening Rain take s a more optimistic approach than later efforts like Farewell My Concubine, reflecting the heady atmosphere of the early reform era.

narroW Street (1981, director Yang Yanjin)

Yang’s debut Troubled Laughter (1979) was already an outstanding examination of the Cultural Revolution, but he topped it with Narrow Street. The unusual framing device has a blind writer pouring out his tale of woe for a film director: during the Cultural Revolution, he fell in love with a young woman from a bad class background, and suffered grievously for it. The writer and director then discuss an appropriate ending for the story, in a lengthy, self-reflexive sequence that implicitly questions the sunny outlook of films like Evening Rain.

Sacrificed youth(1985, director Zhang Nuanxin) Sacrificed Youth belongs to a sub-genre of Cultural Revolution dramas that might be called "sent-down films"—stories of urban youths dispatched to the countryside as part of their political education. A 17-year-old girl is sent to an ethnic minority village near Laos; though initially withdrawn and unhappy, she's gradually brought out of her shell by the locals' customs and kindliness. Zhang Nuanxin (perhaps the most prominent female voice of the Fourth Generation) lent this coming-of-age tale a more nuanced touch than the common, idealized portraits of rural minority life.

in the heat of the Sun (1994, director Jiang Wen)

In the Heat of the Sun was a box-office hit in China, where it retains a devoted following and frequently appears on critics' lists of the greatest Chinese films. But it's less famous abroad than it should be, perhaps because it eschewed the dark stories of persecution found in most world-renowned Cultural Revolution films. Instead, actor-turned-director Jiang Wen (the male lead in Hibiscus Town) delivered an expressionistic piece about teen ruffians running free in mid-'70s Beijing—fighting, smoking, burgling, and chasing girls, particularly the pretty state-farm worker who disrupts the group's equilibrium. Perceived by some as a whitewash, Jiang's directorial debut is in fact a slippery, ambiguous work about gaps in history and memory.

the road (2006, director Zhang Jiarui)

The nostalgic mood of In the Heat of the Sun also permeates The Road, an admittedly less idiosyncratic film about teen girl who works as a bus conductor in rural Yunnan. The girl's crush on a doctor "sent down" for re-education ends badly, and she marries the bus driver instead. The Cultural Revolution forms only a small part of the film's 40-year narrative, which closes on a critical view of modern consumerist China. The Cultural Revolution itself, by contrast, appears as the end of an age of idealism—an attempt to situate the era not only within the context of China's past, but a present that was probably unimaginable even to directors in the '80s.

含义:目光短浅,没有远见BBQ Survival Guide 烧烤摊生存指南 the Mouse became one of the twelve Zodiac animals because

of his smart tricks. The Emperor of Heaven once announced that one of the preconditions of being a Zodiac animal candidate was: arrive early. The Mouse didn't receive an

invitation, but he wanted very much to be the Zodiac animal. So he lied to the Cat: “Hey brother Cat, I’m going to the Heaven and register for you, you can just stay here and rest for a while.” The Cat was hardworking and kind; he believed the Mouse and went to rest. The Mouse then said to the Cow: “You will feel bored and lonely going to Heaven by yourself, why not let me sit on your back and accompany you?” The Cow thought he was probably right, so he let the Mouse sit on his back.

The next day, the Cow and the Mouse got up very early. They talked and laughed on the way. Then, right before they stepped through the gate of Heaven, the Mouse jumped off the Cow’s back and he became the first animal to arrive in Heaven. The Emperor of Heaven had no way to retract what he had before about arriving early so the Mouse became one of the twelve Zodiac animals.

Since the mouse betrayed the Cat using such lousy tricks, the Cat never forgave him, even now cats will still chase mice like hell.

Helpdesk released an innovative game earlier in May, providing European SMEs with a virtual experience of doing business in China without having to leave their office.

Developed in partnership with leading technology provider,

Serious Games International, the game builds on the core competencies of protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China. The game focuses on using decision branching so that each and every action has a realistic reaction or repercussion. Using these key game mechanics means users such as SME CEOs, HR and senior managers will learn from their

actions in a safe and fun environment.

The game allows users an initial budget of €300k, which is used to create products, attract clients, establish partnerships with Chinese companies to manufacture and distribute products, protect their businesses by registering IP, and much more. Users can increase their revenue through raising the star ratings of their products, optimising their partnerships, battling infringements and making product improvements through research and development (R&D). Players are prepared for potential business challenges in China such as having their product copied or their trade secrets given away. In the game, as in real-life, by taking informed decisions they can reduce the risk of IP infringements occurring.

The China IPR SME Helpdesk supports European Union (EU) SMEs to both protect and enforce their IPR in or relating to China, through the provision of free information and services. This includes free confidential advice, training, materials and online resources. The Helpdesk employs innovative solutions for disseminating information and communicating the key message ‘know before you go’. The China IPR SME Helpdesk is co-funded by the European Commission and has been in operation since 2008.

naoMi SaunderS, ProJect ManaGer, china iPr SMe helPdeSK Said: “An increasing number of SMEs are considering internationalising their business to China but lack information and experience in the market. The serious game provides a platform for SMEs to gain useful knowledge in a low-risk and stimulating environment. Working with Serious Games International has allowed us to create a game that incorporates proven pedagogical methodology, valuable content with an attractive user experience. We are delighted with the game and challenge SMEs to download it from our website.”

1. SUBJECT HEADING Your subject heading should summarize

the content of your e-mail. Be sure to include one and keep it short, simple and memorable.

2. MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS AT THE TOP OF THE E-MAIL

Write the key points or deadlines at the beginning of your e-mail if not the reader may not get to them.

3. DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE SENDING YOUR E-MAILS

Check for spelling/grammar mistakes and think if you received the e-mail how would you feel. If you wouldn’t read it because it’s too long then delete some of the content.

4. KEEP YOUR E-MAILS UNDER 10 LINES

My former German boss suggested this tip and I think it’s very simple and effective.

5. YOU DON’T HAvE TO SEND YOUR E-MAIL WHEN YOU

FINISH WRITING IT If it’s an important e-mail think where the recipient will be when you click send. If they are in a meeting and have to check 20 e-mails when they come out of that meeting maybe they won’t even read your message. Therefore why not send the e-mail very early in the morning or late afternoon.

6. INCLUDE YOUR FULL SIGNATURE AT THE END OF

YOUR E-MAILSIt’s very important even on internal e-mails to colleagues in other offices to include your

full contact details when you first contact someone in case they would like to call you urgently. If they can’t find your telephone number on your signature you may lose a sale or create a bad impression.

7. DON’T WRITE E-MAILS WHEN YOU’RE ANGRY!

If someone criticizes you or upsets you don’t reply to their e-mail immediately. Simply wait for a few hours or even better until the next day and this will probably prevent you from writing things you later regret.

8. SEND E-MAIL UPDATESIf you can’t reply to an e-mail within 3-5

days send a quick update for example to say you are waiting for some information and will get back to the person soon. If you just don’t reply to an e-mail for 2-3 weeks it will make you seem unprofessional.

1. hAVE A ClEAr ‘CAll tO ACtIOn’ Tell the person you are writing to what you

want them to do. For example if you would like to arrange a meeting give two or three possible dates when you are free. Make life easy for your recipient and they will be more likely to reply.

2. dEtAIls ArE VEry ImPOrtAnt Sometimes due to cultural habits Chinese

people are a little vague when communicating and use words such as“ maybe, “ “ cha bu duo. ” etc. When communicating with foreigners both face-to-face and via e-mail I advise you to be more direct and include all the little details and specifics to ensure your recipient doesn’t need to send you several extra e-mails to get the answers to their questions.

3. rEmEmbEr tO sAy thAnK yOu If a western colleague or client helps you out

with something be sure to say thank you. Chinese people don’t usually say thank you all the time to their family members like most westerners do and therefore they can occasionally forget to use thank you with their western clients/colleagues. If you remember to do it this will help you to build a good relationship.

1. mAny ChInEsE dOn’t usE E-mAIl! Even in foreign-owned companies some

Chinese employees are not that keen on reading and writing e-mails and much prefer to pick-up the phone. Therefore if you don’t get an answer via e-mail try calling.

2. sImPlE lAnGuAGE It’s best to keep language very basic and

not use too many technical words or acronyms such as ASAP for example. This should help avoid any misunderstandings.

3. shOrt E-mAIls As written above some Chinese staff

don’t like using e-mail so it’s best to keep your messages as short as possible. This will increase the chance that your e-mail gets read and you receive a reply.

In conclusion, try to keep your e-mails short and clear but also think about the way the person you are contacting likes to communicate. For example my wife never checks her e-mails but uses Wechat every day!

You may get a quicker reply from your Chinese clients/colleagues if you send them a message on Wechat or QQ or give them a call as opposed to e-mail. Whereas Chinese people could of course pick up the phone but can also try contacting foreigners on Linkedin, Facebook(via a VPN) or Skype.
