When the World Cup is decided on 11 July, Summer can finally begin! If football fever has left you couch-ridden for the past five weeks, get your fitness and beach time in with a full-on, 32 team footie tournament at Qingdao’s best beach for summer events.

Last year’s inaugural event took place on a single day, with 12 teams playing through a breakneck schedule of ten-minute halves. The sun poured down for most of the day, golden sand flew, and when all had settled

Shanghai’s Beavers United would take the 3,000元 purse to pay toward their flights home. Qingdao amateur football teams Tsingtao United FC, Drunken Dragons, Team LPG, and IGO Istanbul put in terrific showings, along with Shatan Lao Pengyou and Fengbao.

Attendees loaded up on local beer and imported ice cream, visited Caribbean Bar for kao rou at lunch and generally did their best to stay in the best form possible under the knackering circumstances. Even with most teams

resting at any given time, the excitement and action made it hard to catch your breath.

In short, a good time was had by all, and it’s time to do it again.

This year, the event’s organisers have taken note of the World Cup format and hope to truly open up the field to an even greater variety of teams and talent. Like its bigger brother in South Africa, the 2010 Golden Beach International Beach Football Festival will boast 32 teams in eight groups.

Starting on 17 July, the tournament will take place over five Saturdays, with two groups in a round robin each Saturday, with elimination and finals to take place on 14 August. The prize purse has not yet been absolutely confirmed at time of publication, but they’re guaranteeing over 8,000元 to the first-place team.

Get Involved!It’s easy to get a team into the match. Registration requires a deposit of 500元, or other reasonable assurance that you will attend. Also, rosters need to be submitted at registration, and adhered to for the course of the tournament.

But beyond players, this year we’re looking for more spectacle and spectators! If you enjoy parties on the beach and want to support your footballing friends, head out with them for the day - as well as the matches, the festival will host occasional music and a Beach Bunny competition (contestants are welcome!). Some shelter is provided, but a tent/umbrella couldn’t hurt and a towel is always recommended.

Scheduling will take place after registration closes on 12 July. Teams with schedule considerations can request particular days for their group stage games. Players are required to arrive at Golden Beach by 9:30am on the day of their matches.

去年首届比赛仅一天结束，12支队伍以每十分钟为半场快速进行比赛，一整天烈日炎炎，金色的沙子飞溅，获得冠军的队伍可以获得3000元的奖金。青岛业余足球队，青岛足球联盟，醉龙队，老菲酒吧队，爱购伊士坦布尔队同沙滩老朋友和沙滩风暴同场竞技。

参赛者们畅饮啤酒，品尝进口冰淇淋，午餐到加勒比酒吧吃烤肉。大家都会尽其最大的努力完成比赛。即使是队伍中场休息时，刚刚紧张激烈的比赛仍令观众们心跳加速。

由于去年比赛获得成功，因此，今年将继续举办。

今年，活动主办方借鉴世界杯的赛程形式，希望藉此来吸引更多的队伍和足球爱好者。如同在南非的前辈一样，2010年金沙滩国际沙滩足球赛将由 3 2 支队伍组成，分8个小组进行比赛。

Go, Go Gadget Expo!中国国际消费电子博览会2010 China International Consumer Electronics Show

As home to some of China’s biggest consumer electronics brands (and with better summer weather than China’s other production hotspots), Qingdao has proven to be a welcoming home for the China International Consumer Electronics Show (SinoCES). Like its sibling CES in the United States, SinoCES is an opportunity for electronics companies to show off their latest gadgets, from home security to home theatre systems, Wifi adapters to solar iPhone chargers, washing machines, virtual reality kits and much more.

As China’s domestic market has grown, SinoCES has moved from being oriented to attracting distributors (Wal-Mart, Tesco, Best Buy) to reaching consumers themselves, who flock to the show for its many many gee-whiz factors. Indeed, while exports of light industrial goods to developed markets fell last year, domestic demand continued (and continues) to climb.

For people who are into new products, SinoCES has a lot to offer. At least ten companies are planning major product releases around the occasion in order to benefit from publicity, meaning visitors will see hot new gizmos before they even make it onto the blogs. Other recently-released products are seen here for the first time.

SinoCES is also a showcase for innovative design. This year will introduce several CES Best Innovation Award-winning products, alongside the winners of America’s Industrial Design Excellence Awards. These products are setting a new standard for the design in the development of electronics. Last year’s event featured exhibitions on the design of different locomotives around the world, and a collection of automobiles by the eccentric German designer Luigi Colani (Mr. Colani was also available for photos); we’re looking forward to what’s on hand for 2010.

Qingdao may not be Miami, but few cities in the world offer as much variety of beaches to splash around on. Bring a towel, a spade, sunscreen and a bag of the city's finest ale and get ready for a good time, anytime (provided it's not raining or covered in algae).

Golden Beach, Huangdao黄岛金沙滩Golden Beach offers a great all-round experience, worth checking out for a sunny day if you can make the trip from downtown. A kilometer of soft sand on a gentle slope to the sea, and a set of beach accommodations fit in to make your visit easy. This was the site of the Beach Volleyball events in China's National Games last year, and also hosts an annual music festival and Beach Football tournament (see article, p6)

Liu Qing He流清河At the entrance to Laoshan National Scenic Spot, Liu Qing He offers terrific views of Asia's highest coastal mountains, as well as a rustic barbecue stand (there are other seafood restaurants over the road) and is this reviewer's favourite place to escape for a morning. It's certainly more challenging to get to than the downtown set, but absolutely worth the while if you want to cut loose.

NearbyJust the towering limestone cliffs of Laoshan, simply stunning. If you hope to consume anything other than seafood, mineral water or beer, its best to bring it yourself.

No 3 Bathing Beach第三海水浴场Occupying the coast between the Central Business District and Badaguan, No 3 has fantastic views of the downtown skyline and International Sailing Centre, as well as several hundred metres of sand. It's perfect for taking a long lunch, or meeting up after work. Don't worry, unless your colleagues have a telescope, no one can see you from the office.

NearbyThe best thing around by far is the newly-improved,

gorgeously historic Cafe Roland with its classic European façade and outdoor dining area. There are some kao rou places down the street as well.

Get there from CBDTurn toward the sea at the corner of Taipingjiao Liu Lu and Xianggang Zhong Lu, then turn right when you get to the water (Zhanshan San Lu). Buses 31, 316, 26, 231, 321, 304, and 501 all stop at Er Liao Zhan - once you disembark, walk towards the sea. The beach is hard to miss!

No 1 Bathing Beach第一海水浴场This beach is closest to the train station, and perhaps as a result attracts an unimaginable number of tourists on any sunny Summer day. The sheer numbers of people make it hard to get much enjoyment from swimming, sand castles and the like; instead, try a jet ski tour and check out great views of the city from the water.

NearbyZhongshan Park has amusement rides for youngsters and can make for a pleasant afternoon stroll, and Hui Quan Square has a cinema.

No 2 Bathing Beach第二海水浴场Qingdao's most 'exclusive' beach has been known to charge 2元 entrance fee during Summer months, perhaps to prevent overflow from No 1 Beach nearby. The red rocks jutting out from the coast and the iconic Granite Villa make this the most sought-after locale for bridal photography. The seawall, shark net and small size make it a good place for families with young children, but this beach is best enjoyed as a starting place for the Boardwalk.

NearbyThe Boardwalk is beautiful as it winds along the

coast in Badaguan, and is highly recommended. There are a number of places to stop for a (pricy) Tsingtao or pot of tea. The Granite Villa was used as a guesthouse for dignitaries throughout the 20th Century; now it is a museum.

Get there from CBDTell your taxi driver "di er haishui yuchang", or walk over from No. 1. There really aren't any decent bus stops nearby.

Shilaoren Beach石老人浴场

Shilaoren is great for a visit if your in the neighbourhood, or joining in for a game of Ultimate Frisbee on Sunday afternoons. There are a lot of people, bouncy castles, bumper cars (but don't try to actually bump). space to run around, and less construction waste than in previous years.

NearbyFolks in the know like to stroll along near Sculpture Garden, to the west of the beach. From 8-11 July, head to Shilaoren Beach after stopping at nearby SinoCES (see article, p10).

5 things to look out for五大注意事项

Kao rou skewersThere's nothing like barbecue chuanr by the sea, and many people fail to safely dispose of the thin metal skewers when they're done. For everyone's sake, don't litter on the beach. And watch out when running/jumping/lunging.

Algae bloomsIn June 2008 a 1200km2 hunk of seaweed lodged against the coast of Qingdao, which might have cancelled the city's Olympic debut had it not been for a massive clean-up effort and unprecedented volunteerism from residents. The green tide is now believed to have originated in seaweed farms off Jiangsu Province, and was aided by the flow of nitrogen-rich runoff from eastern China. At time of printing, another massive one is headed our way.

Sunburn Watson's (inside Marina City, Wanda Plaza and Sunshine) has sunscreen available without skin-whitening agents. For full cancer-fighting potential, scientists recommend applying sunscreen once 15-30 minutes before sun exposure will begin, and again 15-30 minutes after entering the sunshine.

TheftQingdao's beaches are charming, but by no means secluded. There is no reason to leave your belongings unattended. The shacks that rent umbrellas and other seaside equipment will often be happy to watch over your bags and shoes while you frolic in the sand, but be sure to ask them nicely.

Undertow/RiptidesEach summer, emergency medical teams in Qingdao treat dozens of people for drowning, often because the backwash of water flowing out from a steep beach can be strong enough to drag swimmers out to sea. The best thing to do is avoid swimming in areas where waves crash on a steep surface, and in areas where the water looks unusually calm. If you get caught in one of these currents, the best thing to do is hold your breath and do not try to fight it.

浒苔侵袭2008年6月，青岛1200平方海里的海岸线被浒苔包围，在岛城

据悉，浒苔来源自江苏省海藻养殖场，顺着含氮丰富的潮水流

向中国东部。

晒伤在百丽广场、万达购物中心和阳光百货内的屈臣氏可购买到没有

美白剂的防晒霜。为有效预防癌症，科学家建议在接受日光照射

前、后15-30分钟各涂抹一次防晒霜。

小偷青岛的沙滩是美丽迷人的，但并不与世隔绝。要小心看管您的财

务。在沙滩嬉戏时，可礼貌询问，出租帐篷和其他海滩用品的小

商贩是否愿意帮您照看财物。

回头浪/激流每年夏季，青岛海天救生队都会救治几十名溺水者。多数溺水者

是因为来自险峻海滩的海水逆流的巨大回吸力而被带入水中。最

好避免在海浪冲击的岩石附近和海水异常平静的地方游泳。如果

5 things to enjoy五大享受

SunshineIt doesn't just feel amazing and make everything look dreamy. Studies show that short doses of sunshine gradually increase the amount of melanin in your skin, reducing the risk of future overexposure. Even better, sunlight on the skin causes a reaction that turns some cholesterol into Vitamin D, which helps fight depression.

Boats At No 1 Bathing Beach, visitors can rent 4-seat rowboats (and life vests) for 40元 per hour. If you've ever wanted to push out into Jiaozhou Bay without getting wet, this seems like a great way to do it (provided that it's not terribly windy, wavy,

or raining). Jet ski tours of the area are also available, starting at 160元. For the bold, there's even a gocart-powered parafoil that makes laps around the bay for 880元.

Shark Nets Designated bathing areas are protected by surface-to-floor nets, intended to keep sharks and other charismatic macrofauna away from swimmers. Some of these barriers have been beefed up in response to 2008's algae emergency (see above).

Tsingtao Beer In a bag, bottle or can, it's often hard to believe how good we have it here. Qingdao boasts China's oldest (and best) brewery, and a beach within fifteen minutes of any downtown office. Bring enough to share. NB** Cold ones can be hard to find. Buy yours from a nearby convenience store or restaurant, and have them stored in the refrigerator.

The Scenery From the bridal processions and sycamores of No 2, to the futuristic skyline of No 3 and the majestic limestone cliffs that ring Liu Qing He, there's a lot more to look at than a watery expanse. Sunsets are particularly dramatic.

到达的沙滩浴场。冰镇啤酒却不多见。您可从附近便利店购买

后自己冷藏。

景色从浩浩荡荡的结婚队伍到二浴那郁郁葱葱的枫树，从三浴蔚蓝的

Vicious Cycling青岛自行车游侠The bike is the friend of the people

Cruise ControlIt’s 5:32pm. You’ve been stuck at the corner of Nanjing and Jiangxi for the past six minutes, and the light won’t turn green again for another 53 seconds... 52... 51... Then an old man on a bicycle rolls past the window of your Passat, or Hyundai, or Beemer, gliding through the space between the sidewalk and the crush of passenger cars. By the time the light changes, he’s long gone, and you still haven’t made it into the intersection.

Once you’ve been biking for a while, even walking feels tedious. It takes forever to cover the same ground on foot that you could on wheels. But beyond that, cycling provides a quick way to get active, with significantly less stress on your system than running. So if you want to spend these beautiful Summer months enjoying Qingdao’s scenery while actually seeing a lot of it, get yourself some wheels!

Where To Go The BoardwalkStretching mostly-unbroken from Zhanqiao Pier to Shazikou (near the gates of Laoshan), this is a cyclist’s dream and mostly legal to ride on. Very little difficult terrain, and most areas are closed to vehicle traffic. Be sensitive to the thousands of brides and their camera crews; keep in mind that everyone else is trying to enjoy their day on two feet, and will never see as much of the coast in one day as you will on two wheels.

FushanFor an easy mountain biking escape, are great rides to be had along Qingdao’s downtown mountains; in fact, it’s easy to pedal all the way from Etsong Stadium to the other end of the range. Look for access roads near the stadium along Yinchuan Xi Lu. Many sections of path are wide enough for multiple riders.

LaoshanThis one’s best done in a group - hook up with the cycling club at the Giant shop on Jiangxi Lu (see address below), and ride all the way out to Beijiushui on a Saturday. For more information call 8587-2858.

To workThe only greenhouse gases to come from riding a bike are the CO2 that you breathe and any methane you may emit while exercising. Think of what would happen to congestion and traffic if everyone were on a bike. Think of cities like Beijing where the bike lanes are often as crowded and hectic as the roads - and think what it’s going to look like when all of

those people trade their two wheels for four. It’s a lot faster than walking, and for those middle-distance commutes, when the weather’s good, it can’t be beat.

片忙碌的景象-再试想一下，如果这些人的两轮车变成

四轮，是一片怎样的景象？骑自行车比步行快多了，天

气晴好，骑车驶完这段中距路程并不会感到很累。

Anywhere you ride is truly at your own risk. Unlike many cities in China, Qingdao doesn’t

have dedicated bike lanes. For safety, make yourself as visible to drivers as possible and stay out

of their way. The driver might be ‘at fault’, but you are much more vulnerable. 不管到哪都需注意安全。和中国其他城市不同，青岛没有

自行车专用道。安全起见，要确保自己在汽车司机的视线

Lock up. • Get a good lock and use it, even if you’re “just running in for a second.”Wear a helmet. • They have them in the places where bikes are sold, and the salesperson might even cut you a deal on one (see below).Avoid riding at night.• If you really really have to, get a light for the front of your bike and flashers for the back. Observe posted signs.• If a sign says ‘don’t ride’ and you ride anyway, someone might tell you that you shouldn’t. For example, Xianggang Lu is basically a no-ride zone. Summer has arrived and while lounging at the beach may come to mind as the best way to beat the heat, it’s also high time to get out trekking in the conifer-shaded hills of Laoshan, exercising both body and mind, as there are no shortage of historical relics to explore.

Chajian Temple ResurrectedA haven for Daoist and Buddhist monks for centuries upon centuries, supposedly 9 palaces, 8 temples and around 72 nunneries lined the hills of Laoshan in the more flourishing Yuan (1271-1368) and Ming Dynasties (1368-1644). Today, few visitors see more than Taiqing Palace and Huayin Temple, given their easy accessibility and the fact that many other spots are in ruins after the tumultuous 20th century.

Recently, a quaint temple/convent, known as Chajian Temple (茶涧庙/ Tea Creek Temple) is being rebuilt in a deep valley surrounded by precipitous cliffs and overlooking the Yellow Sea. Originally built more than 600 years ago, it was commissioned by the affluent Wang family of Jiaozhou and began falling

into disrepair during the Republican Years (1912-1949). With the return of more ‘harmonious’ times in the 21st century, the government recognises its cultural and historical significance. Currently, its pieces are being put back together, yet there even exists a poetry in the destruction. A stand of cedars surrounds the ruins and a lone magnolia tree survives in the courtyard. Off to the side lays a tablet with weathered, indiscernible characters likely recording the location’s unmatched sanctity.

Chajian’s German HistoryMost visitors are well acquainted with the red-roofs of Old-Town leftover from the German garrison (1898-1914), but this era also left no small mark on the Laborious Mountain (the Lao/崂 in Laoshan/崂山 could literally be translated in such a way, given the radical 劳/lao means difficult or laborious, and as the tale goes that the first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, required tens of thousands of local peasants to help his caravan reach the top around two thousand years ago --- given its relatively inaccessible towering bouldery peaks). Germans crushed up granite boulders, blazed hiking-trails, paved roads, constructed idyllic resorts along with a large

茶涧庙遗址几世纪来，道教和佛教僧侣的圣地。据说在元朝

（1271-1368年间）和明朝（1368-1644年间）鼎盛时

期，共有9座宫殿、8座庙宇和72座尼姑庵环顾于此。现

今，更多游客驻足游览太清宫和华阴寺。一是，它们便利

In 1903, in the same valley as Chajian Temple, Ernst Kroebel, a German merchant, oversaw the construction of a small cottage and drinking-hole known as Irene-Baude, whose entrance once bore the Latin inscription Beatus ille qui procul negotiis (“Happy is the man who is far removed from trade and business”). As the head of the Mountain Association (Bergvereins), Kroebel was one of the first Germans to really explore the divine hills of Laoshan and ended up developing many systematic hiking trails out at Laoshan along with some drinking holes (Getränkedepots). Irene-Baude was presumably dedicated to Princess Irene, the wife, and first-cousin, of Prince Heinrich of Prussia. Today all that remains are the ruins of a couple granite cottages and a staircase lined with the characters “Long live the Communist Party, Long live Chairman Mao.”

Prince Heinrich was also the Grand Admiral of the Imperial German Navy and travelled to Qingdao twice, supposedly visiting the Tea Creek valley for a hike both times. A bit below the remnants of Irene-Baude is a sapphire, spring-fed pool known as Prinzenbad (Prince’s Bath / 王子泉). The name is etched into a large boulder just above the pool, as well as 1898-1912, corresponding with the dates of the Prince’s two visits. Another epigraph found half-way up the trail to Irene-Baude and Prinzenbad served as liquid motivation for hikers to get up to Irene-Baude; it reads NUR MUT MEIN FREUND, BIST DU ERST OBEN, WIE WIRST DU TRANK UND AUSSICHT LOBEN or roughly, Be brave my friend, once you reach the top you can drink up and enjoy the view.

间寺庙渐毁，解放前彻底毁坏。2008年12月青岛市崂山

区人民政府正式公布其为区第四批文物保护单位。目前，

重建工作正在进行中。茶涧地区的自然环境优美，山林景

观位居崂山景区各涧中山林之首。寺院遗址周围群峰环

拥、涧峡清秀、危岩林立、林木苍翠，举目成趣！寺院两

侧有清泉一眼，常年水流不断，水质甘洌；寺院内有一株

近代种植的的木兰树，极富传奇色彩，每年五、六月份花

儿朵朵盛开，香气袭人使人流连忘返!这里是一块人杰地

灵、地肥水足的宝地！

与德国的渊源大多游客熟知老城区的红瓦房遗留自1898-1914年

的德国驻军，但是他们在崂山上也留下了不少印记。（传

说崂山由此得名：秦始皇多次来崂山寻找长生不老药，但

那时的崂山没有任何路，想上去比登天还要难。于是秦

始皇便劳民伤财，让老百姓帮忙修建道路，死了不少人，

所以叫做‘劳山’，但是后人觉得不太雅观，所以便改名

叫做崂山。）德国人粉碎花岗岩巨石，修建铺设道路，建

造了一个大规模疗养度假村。还在石头上题诗。现今，以

上遗迹都可在崂山上寻得。

1903年，和茶涧庙在同一山谷，有德军退役上尉克

罗帕尔设计建造的以泉水闻名的伊伦娜旅馆。伊伦娜

旅馆（即避暑楼）据说是为献给伊伦娜公主（又称艾琳

公主）-普鲁士王子海因里希亲王（又称亨利亲王）的妻

子。泉眼的入口刻有拉丁铭文，大意是“幸福就是远离商

贸。”作为山区协会的首领，克罗帕尔是真正探寻崂山各

山峰、系统开发崂山内外的登山路径和饮水泉眼的首批

德国人士之一。现今，仅剩毁损的一些花岗岩小屋。

海因里希王子也是德意志帝国海军大将，曾两次前

往青岛，据说两次都曾到过茶涧。伊伦娜旅馆遗址的下方

是王子在两次来访期间（1898-1912年间），下水游泳得

名的王子泉。王子泉三字啄刻于泳池上方的大卵石上。

另一个题词则发现于去伊伦娜旅馆和王子泉的半途，“

了安抚饥渴的登山者。

The trail leading up this valley is one of the most classic hikes at Laoshan. Today, one can still stay at a watering-hole/cottage near to Irene-Baude. Known as Old Yellow’s / Lao Huang’s and lying more than 600 meters up the valley, Laohuang boasts Laoshan’s highest grown green tea, fresh organic goat BBQ, and chicken alongside wild vegetables and mushrooms. During the cooler months, one can put down some of his cherry-flavored baijiu and then pass out comfortably on a kang (heated bed).

How to Get ThereTo get to the Chajian Creek hike, take bus 304 heading east from Jusco to the Dàhédōng stop, cross the road and walk back 50 meters to find the stone marker for Dàhédōng (大河东), across from the Jufeng Tourist Zone entrance sign. Walk through a small village for about 10-15 minutes to the last road on the right, circle up around the reservoir to the right and follow the trail into the heart of Laoshan. Enter at a manned checkpoint where you must register with ID and agree not to smoke or light fires in the mountains. Follow the path along the streambed, and look for red flags tied to trees for signs that you are on the right trail.

Wear proper hiking shoes/clothes, as the terrain is quite rugged in some areas. It’s also a good idea to take some food and drink for a picnic along the way and let people know where you will be for the day. Also, there are poisonous snakes

at Laoshan, but supposedly as long as one stays to the well-traveled areas, there is a low chance of seeing one.

What started with Spanish fast fashion retailer Zara back in October has now become a must-see shopping destination housing Swedish chain H&M and Japanese brand Uniqlo. A stroll within half a mile of the mall will reveal women's partiality to H&M, the store's bags as ubiquitous as Louis Vuitton fakes. All of the chains offer European-inflected fashions at reasonable prices, but that doesn't mean they're all the same. H&M's trendy duds have a preppy vibe, while Zara specializes in providing its customers with high-fashion styles almost as soon as they're off the runway (a little too soon, say the designers whose work serves as the "inspiration"). Uniqlo's M.O. is to provide the foundations of your wardrobe. They typically offer the same item in every color of the rainbow, the better to help you rationalize stockpiling sweaters (the cashmere version of which is reputed to be the best at its price point - something to keep in mind come fall!)

China in the 21st Century: What everyone needs to know

The following is an exclusive Redstar interview with author Jeffrey Wasserstrom.

Jeff, you became a China watcher before it was fashionable. What attracted you to China Studies? I was fascinated by history as an undergraduate and took courses on different parts of the world, and one of the best ones [was] about China. In addition, I have always liked to travel and had a long-time fascination with countries that have experienced revolutions.

What is your training, including living or travelling here?After taking some [undergrduate] classes in Chinese history and language, I got a Master’s from Harvard and a doctorate from Berkeley. I spent a year doing dissertation research at Shanghai’s Fudan University in the mid-1980s, and I’ve [returned] about a dozen times since then. Your ambitious book tries to explain China for the 21st century instead of ten years and in only 135 pages. Is your goal realistic?I don’t try to be encyclopedic and comprehensive. Even though I begin with Confucius (what he thought has gone in and out of favor over the centuries) and go up to the Internet, I’m unapologetically selective. Whether I manage to hit all the right high points in this quick tour across a complicated country during a period of amazing changes... well, that’s for readers to decide!

How do you gather information, and what material do you analyze?This book is a distillation of things I’ve been thinking and lecturing about for years, so it didn’t involve much new research, just a lot of rethinking and figuring out what was most significant to convey to busy people about complex subjects--and how to get my ideas across in a lively and accessible way.

How does history help reveal China’s future? History never provides a precise blueprint. It does reveal patterns, though, [about] the present and the future. Looking at other countries when they were rising rapidly in global economic hierarchies and host[ing] major international events, as China is now, provides an interesting framework. I particularly stress the parallels between China early in the 21st century and the United States between the 1870s when we hosted our first World’s Fair and the early 1900s when we held our first Olympics, in part to break away from a misleading tendency in both countries to think of the other as totally unlike it. Historians usually look backward, so why do hazard futurology? I [avoid] confident predictions even though [such] books sometimes get a lot of attention and sell well, in part because I know how often people have claimed to know exactly where the PRC was headed - and been proved wrong. [But] some things seemed quite safe to predict. For example, that a big challenge on the horizon for China [and others is solving] the environmental crisis.

Go Lala Go!Directed by Xu Jinglei

《杜拉拉升职记》导演：徐静蕾

The opening credits of Go Lala Go! promise a slick tale of modern Beijing, with shimmering skyscrapers and star turns by Watsons, Lenovo, Cartier, Industrial Bank Co. and Zhaopin.com. Unsubtle product placement is like Everest or the weather - it’s just there - but Lala lays it on thick at the outset.

What was probably meant as pure promotion actually works pretty well as stage-setting. The film’s corporate space (an American-owned database firm) is an all-encompassing one, subsuming its employees’ personal lives while prohibiting intra-office relationships -- which of course becomes an important plot point.

So the office ladies can only ogle handsome manager David (Stanley Huang), while new hire Du Lala (director/co-writer Xu) distinguishes herself through actual work. Her take-charge attitude catches Dave’s eye, and a few scenes later they’re on one of those only-in-movies first dates, where the woman gets trapped in an outdoor fountain and the guy runs in to join her.

The following developments could come from innumerable yuppie romcoms or TV dramas, complete with obligatory detour to an exotic foreign locale. (Indeed, a TV series has already been produced from the same online source novel.) But the film is refreshingly good-natured: there’s no grotesque “comic relief” supporting roles, and David’s old flame Rose (Karen Mok) is more co-worker than competition. Lala ascends the ladder without

ever becoming a shrieking harridan. Xu dodges caricature and finds space among the Lenovo billboards for people to be people.

各类条条框框的限制，而且还涉及到员工的私生活。严格禁

止办公室恋情，这也成为本部电影的一个主线。

因此办公室的各白领丽人们只能向销售部金牌经理王伟

（黄立行饰）暗送秋波。新进职员杜拉拉（导演、主演徐静

蕾饰）在实际工作中脱颖而出。她认真负责的工作态度吸引

着王伟的目光。几个场景后，转为他们初次约会的场面-杜

拉拉被困在室外喷泉中，王伟英雄救美。随后的剧情发展和

其他小资浪漫喜剧或电视剧如出一辙。经历种种曲折后，以

异国重逢圆满结局。

影片总体感觉清新浪漫，没有完全的反面角色，王伟的

旧情人玫瑰(莫文蔚饰)也更多的是以同事而非情敌的身份登

场。杜拉拉的升职也没有做过多的夸张表现。

Laoshan Mountain Observatory Youth Hostel 崂山奥博维特国际青年旅社新的大海驿客栈

Overnight stays at Laoshan mountain just got much more comfortable. The Laoshan Mountain Observatory Youth Hostel, as its name might suggest, is the sister hotel to the Old Observatory Youth Hostel in Qingdao's German concession area, and rests conveniently at the bottom of the Beijiushui hiking path. This modest property provides amicable standards of service for such an isolated location, with western food items such as American Breakfast to start the day with, and Vegetarian Lasagne with Organic Vegetables of the Mountain on the menu, though on a recent visit, I opted for the slightly more indigenous sweet potato flour baozi, stuffed with pork and spinach - a real local treat. There are rooms with en-suite facilities and dormitory style accommodation too, and though its unlikely to appeal to business travelers, its certainly upmarket compared to the alternative - tents and lüguan. The proprietor is the manager of last year's summertime music hotspot, the Beach House, a venue that in its few months of opening hosted some fantastic beachside parties and events, but which closed down last autumn. A hugely welcome addition to Qingdao, which has always been renowned for its scenery. Now hiking and other mountain activities can last for a few days, with this convenient mid-range rest stop, with many of the trappings of home.

This QD-based distributor of music goods do most of their business on Taobao (China's Ebay), but on a recent visit surprised me with some fine deals.

The guitars I played there were some promisingly good, out-of-the-box guitars made by a Chinese manufacturer, Starsun, in Guangzhou. Guitar Square are a Shandong-based distributor of these guitars, and for a little over 100元 for the base model acoustic, or 1300元 for a comfortable electro-acoustic, they are perfectly good for the beginner guitarist, or those who don't intend to treat their instrument particularly well.

More importantly for the guitar enthusiast, are the number of accessories available, many of which are sold at wholesale prices. Electric D'Addario strings for 25元, picks at 50% of the price in other stores and guitar leads, up to 10m long, for similarly slashed prices.

A look at the catalogue reveals that they are also dealers of some more hard-to-come-by products, such as British-made G7 capos and Ultrasound acoustic guitar amplifiers and DI boxes, which are in extremely short supply in Qingdao.

The location is quite hard to come by however, at 28 Huangshan Lu in Taidong (off Wine Street), and behind a residential complex. The property functions more as the office for their web-based commerce, but for ardent guitarists, it's worth dropping by for essential purchases, while picking up a catalogue to view their whole inventory.

Can you say yakitori? In the past month, this reviewer has fallen in love with no less than three terrific Japanese restaurants, in addition to the fantastic offerings the city already had from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Guests enter a tastefully wood-paneled interior (a refuge from the rather seedy surroundings) with the attention to design and detail characteristic of great Japanese joints. Sake bottles make for enticing decoration, and the Asahi tap pours forth amber nectar at the mouth-watering price of 18元/pint.

The menu gives a clue to the restaurant's name. La description du monde is the title of one of Marco Polo's famous accounts of the Far East. Here, Polo's culinary cross-pollination is sort of turned on its head - rather than celebrating the introduction of noodles to Italy, Description makes room for pizza napoletana (many varieties, ~48元) among the yakitori skewers, sashimi, and other Japanese comfort foods. Carnivores will be particularly delighted by offerings like pink roast beef with red wine dipping sauce; lamb chops; a monstrous, tender and savoury roasted chicken leg (of course, there's plenty for vegetarians too - did I mention the pizza?).

Those who haven't plunged into local Japanese dining will be surprised by the variety of yakitori chuanr (most for 6元), and the array of small dishes and flavours that this restaurant has to offer. Venture in, order a pint and several dishes, and enjoy.

At the end of July, Crowne Plaza Qingdao celebrates it's 10th Anniversary! While this is an auspicious occasion for any business, Crowne Plaza's location at the heart of the modern Central Business District, its iconic structure on the city's skyline and its active role in community events mean that this is a milestone to be shared by all. Redstar had the opportunity to sit down with Peter Bamberg, who has been the hotel's General Manager since "before the beginning," to hear his views on Crowne Plaza Qingdao's success.

Ten years at a single dynamic property is an amazing accomplishment for a GM. What has kept you in Qingdao? I've been with the chairman and owner here since the beginning, and we share a level of trust and commitment that is priceless. When I reflect on the terrific relationships we have here and the incredible environment, I have no desire to leave.

Beyond that, having a wonderful home in a wonderful city, with the beaches, wineries, brewery, golf courses, scenery, and now even a German butcher (DEFA), we're extremely blessed.

GM's often seem to have a particular strength, whether it's overseeing some transition, protecting the bottom line, or building partnerships with other local organisations. You have managed to set a high standard in all of these areas. To what would you attribute your success?

In terms of the standards of our hotel's reputation for service, I'm helped a lot by our corporate guidelines that foster a high level of employee development and attention to constant improvement. We treat employees as more than just a pair of hands; we show them respect from the beginning, and give them opportunities to grow, and it helps them to stay focused on providing the best experience for our customers. We make customer feedback visible to our team, so that everyone knows how we are being evaluated and can improve or stay the course as necessary.

Community involvement is a very important part of having a responsible business, and it's something that every department including the ownership is involved with. We have Project Hope as an ongoing effort to build schools and orphanages; a golf tournament is in the works for later this year, to raise funds for the construction of a school. We respond in whatever way we can to other immediate needs as they come.

What are you excited about in the coming ten years?

Many more top-tier hotels are opening in Qingdao, more competition, and it keeps all of us on our toes! It's good for investors, it's good for residents and travellers who have more and more diverse choice of experiences in the city. In this competitive business world, it's not about how long you've been somewhere; it's what you deliver day to day. That makes the immediate future here very exciting.

Even with the ever-increasing competition, Crowne Plaza Qingdao has always been blessed by location. On 13 April, China’s State Council released a new foreign investment policy document aimed at promoting a positive business climate while also cutting funds to projects which harm the environment. The 'Opinions of the State Council Concerning Further Improving the Work of Utilizing Foreign Investment' continues a trend in the government’s thinking toward foreign direct investment that favours investment in higher, value-added industries and enterprises that invest in China’s central and western regions.

This opinion precedes the anticipated revisions to the Catalogue for the Guidance of Foreign Investment Industries, the government’s primary FDI document that delineates which industries are open to foreign investment in China.

The new policy covers four areas: improving the utilisation of FDI; encouraging FDI in central and western China; diversifying FDI; and optimising the regulatory regime for FDI.

Some important changes in the new policy:

Foreign investment is encouraged in high, value-•added and efficient operations as well as China’s interior and western regions

Programs providing preferential policies in listed •industries are now open to foreign investment

Domestic IPOs are encouraged for qualified FIEs•

Qualified FIEs may acquire land use rights at 70 •percent of the minimum price

The threshold amount for local approval of •foreign-invested projects has been raised from US$100 million to US$300 million

FIEs facing capital shortages will be allowed to •extend their capital contribution schedule

The new policies will continue to support Chinese A-share listed companies in promoting domestic and foreign investment. The guidelines will also standardise foreign companies’ domestic investment in addition to corporate mergers and acquisitions.

Companies targeted include those in high-tech industries, service sectors, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly projects.

According to the new policy, a national security examination mechanism will be introduced soon for foreign-funded companies’ merger and acquisition operations in China. Qualified companies are now allowed to issue corporate bonds or medium-term bills and to go public.

The policy also encourages foreign enterprises to set up regional headquarters, research and development centers, procurement hubs, financial management and other functional offices in China, especially in central and western regions with environmentally friendly and labour-intensive projects.

Importing items and equipment for scientific and technological development by qualified foreign-funded R&D centers will be exempt from tariffs, VAT on import and goods and services tax by the end of 2010.

In addition, foreign investors now qualify for preferential policies made available under the Industry and Reinvigoration Plans issued in 2009 which gave incentives to enterprises engaged in the automotive, logistics, information technology, petrochemical and equipment manufacturing industries.

Land use projects that fall under the 'encouraged' list of industries in the catalogue are now able to acquire land use rights on a preferential basis at the aforementioned discounted prices.

China is also reconsidering some criteria for its 'indigenous innovation products' under Notice 618 and has drafted a new notice which should help to alleviate some concern among foreign investors over government restrictions on foreign investment on the mainland.

The new notice may remove some of the requirements of the earlier notice, including the particulars of intellectual property ownership, trademark registration and technology requirements for businesses in China. Those prior requirements were widely criticised by foreign investors as protectionism for domestic companies.

新政策鼓励跨国公司在华设立地区总部，研发中心，采购中心，财务管理中心及其他功能性机构，特别是在中西部地区发展环保和劳动密集型产业项目。

在2010年12月31日以前，对符合规定条件的外资研发中心确需进口的科技开发用品免征进口关税和进口环节增值税、消费税。

另外，外商投资者有资格享有2009年引发的产业调整和振兴计划中的相关优惠政策，包括鼓励企业从事汽车制造业、物流、信息技术、石油化工和装备制造行业。

列为鼓励类外资投资的土地使用项目，可依据上文中提及的优惠政策取得土地使用权。

同时重新审议了去年底618号“自主创新产品认定工作的通知”，并起草了新的通知，旨在帮助缓解外商投资者在中国大陆进行外商投资时超出政府限制的压力。
