Myanmar opens up for business

Following some major political reforms, Myanmar has been welcomed back into the international political fold. As a result, many of the long standing economic sanctions have been eased or were suspended in 2012.

Onshore and offshore opportunities

Myanmar is an important natural gas producer within Southeast Asia, although its upstream hydrocarbons sector is underdeveloped. The government is addressing this issue by encouraging international investment, issuing production sharing contracts and initiating a series of licensing rounds.

Two licensing rounds for onshore blocks have already taken place with many international companies either taking options or showing considerable interest. The first round for offshore blocks is expected shortly. With some experts rating Myanmar to be amongst the world’s top five exploration and production hotspots, the level of interest and investment is set to climb steeply.

Myanmar is thought to have the world’s 10th largest reserves of natural gas and with booming markets on all sides, potential customers are not hard to find. Natural gas sales already account for a third of Myanmar’s total exports. Additional revenue from increased production form a vital component in the government’s ambitious economic expansion plans.
