Coins were found at Bribir during the exavations led by the late Stjepan Gunjača of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts and his collaborators and successors. All the numismatic material was given at the author’s disposal by the colleagues Zlatko Gunjača, Vedrana Delonga, Ma-rina Šegvić and Zdenko Brusić, whereas the preserved old inventory books of the Zadar Museum were shown by Branka Nedved, therefore I wish to express my thanks to all of them. The numismatic and other material used to be preserved either at Bribirska glavica itself in the local collection, or at the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split, the Zadar Archaeological Museum or the City Museum of Šibenik. Most probably there are some coins found at Bribir, all collected by Don Frane Bulić, in the Numismatic Collection of the Split Archaeo-logical Museum, but all the evidence has been lost. There
The author lists c. 200 coins, unearthed chiefly during the post World War Two excavations of the rich complex site on the imposing Bribirska glavica, the ancient Varvaria, by the late Stjepan Gunjača and his team, as well as those archaeologists who succeeded him. Some of the numismatic material found by Fra Lujo Marun, Gunjača’s predecessor and the founder of the Early Croatian archaeology, has also survived. Several coins, certainly more than thirty-odd specimens, all from Bribir, used to be kept at the old Zadar Archaeological Museum until the Worl War Two, as proved by the inventory book, which has also been studied by the author. On the whole, coins from this site can be found in four Croatian museums: the Zadar Arhaeological Museum, the Šibenik City Museum, the Split Museum of Croatian Antiquities and the collection which was once shown on the site itself.

1. Rimska Republika, Procilija (Inv. br. 645, god. 1909)2. Faustina I. (105 – 140; Inv. br. 388, iza god. 1903)3. Marko Aurelije (161 – 180; Inv. br. 388, iza god.

We must not forget that coins, catalogued under No. 268, were found in c. 1900 partly at Đevrske, and partly at Bribir. The Zadar inventory bears witness that the follow-ing coins were discovered at the nearby Ostrovica:
1. Roman Republic, Procilia (Inv. No 645, 1909)2. Faustina I. (105 – 140; Inv. No 388, after 1903)3. Marcus Aurelius (161 – 180; Inv. No 388, after 1903)4. Iulia Mamaea (-235; Inv. No 388, after. 1903)5. Gordianus III. (238 – 244; Inv. No 388, after 1903.;

8. Licinije I. (307 – 323; Inv. br. 388, iza god. 1903)9. Konstantin I. (306/7 – 337; Inv. br. 645, god. 1909)
10. Honorije (395 – 423; Inv. br. 645, god.
Kr. (Kat. br. 4), na koji je još god. 1968. upozorio M. Suić (1968, 28, T. I, 2).
Angela Komnena (1195 – 1203, Kat. br. 147).
U 13. i 14. st. do Bribira dospijevaju i sitni talijanski srebrni kovovi Mantove (Kat. br. 161), Padove (Br. 186), Verone (Br. 187 - 191), a osobito Mletaka (Br. 162 i ss.).
9. Constantinus I. (306/7 – 337; Inv. No 645, 1909)10. Honorius (395 – 423; Inv. No 645, 1909)
According to the material – some two hundred speci-mens – I was able to study, three were Greek (Nos 1 - 3), two Roman Republican (4 - 5), 139 Roman Imperial (6-144), three Byzantine (145 - 147), as well as 52 mediaeval and modern coins (148 - 199).
One of the most important coins found at Bribirska glavica is, doubtlessly, a rare Roman Republican cast bronze semis from the mint of Luceria from the 2nd c. BC (Cat. No 4), which was already published by M. Suić (1968, 28, T. I, 2). It is one half of an as in the half uncial system; on the obverse there is the head of Jupiter facing right, and on the reverse is the bow of a ship, also turned to the right, marked above and left below. This semis bears witness to overseas trade connections between Liburnia and Italy.
The more recent numismatic finds from Bribir, from the 6th c. AD were studied by V. Delonga, within the frame of an important exhibition dedicated to Bribir in the Middle Age (Delonga 1987, 108 - 112). Among the first specimens of Byzantine coins she described a solidus of the emperor Justinian I from Ravenna (Delonga 1981, 210, No. 10; Cat. No 145), as well as a decanummium struck in Rome under the same emperor (Cat. No 146). Chronologi-cally it was followed by a follis Leo VI (886 - 912) or Ro-manus I (919 - 944), which was not on display, as well as a scodellate trachea of 11th and 12th c. The last Byzantine coin to be found was minted under Alexius III Angelus Comne-nus (1195 – 1203, Cat. No 147).
In the 13th and 14th centuries small Italian silver change of Mantua (Cat. No 161), Padoua (No 186), Verona (Nos 187 - 191), and particularly of Venice (Nos 162 i ss.) reached Bribir. Venetian currency stayed in circulation through-out the following several centuries, even after Bribir had been destroyed by the Turks. The more recent times were represented by the 17th-18th c. copper gazzettas, struck for Venetian possessions in Dalmatia and Albania (Delonga 1987, 109; Cat Nos 179 - 185), Crete (No 175), and Corfu, Cefalonia and Zante (Nos 176 - 177), which could also be owned by the poorest shepherd. These poor inhabitants of the once opulent Bribir area used as coins and jewellery even the 17th c. Nuremberg tokens issued by Cornelius and Lazarus Gottlieb Lauffer (Nos 193 - 195).
Hungarian coins, at least according to the repertory of individual finds from Glavica, began to penetrate in the 11th and 12th c. (No 197). There are also silver denars from the reign of Ludovic I the Great (1342 - 1382, Nos 198 - 199), whose decisive role in Dalmatia was also refleted on Bribir itself. Besides it was Ludovic I who in 1347 took away Bribir from the Šubić family and gave them Zrin instead.
Three autonomous Split bagattini have also been found at Bribir (Nos 157 - 159), a fact which confirms their already

proširuje i jedna tirolska krajcara Meinharda II. iz druge polovice 13. st. (Br. 154).
1913. (vidi Prilog I-III i Sl. xx - xx). Marije, do krajnjeg kontrafora uz ulaz. I ono pripada 14. st.
1897. otkrive-no blago od oko 700 sitnih srebrnjaka Splita (691) i Mle-taka (Enrico Dandolo, Giovanni Dandolo) (Mirnik 1981, 115, Br. 532), a u samom Splitu oko god.
known circulation zone. Let us also mention a Tyrolene kreu-zer of Meinhard II. (No 154), a Bavarian pfennig of Heinrich IV. The Rich (No 192) and an Ottoman akcha, the only nu-mismatic evidence for the Turkish occupation (No 196).
There are only two known coin hoards from Bribir, one containing c. Eighteen Venetian, Austrian and German sil-verlings from the 12th – 14th c. found wrapped in a piece of cloth (as witnessed by three letters by Lujo Marun to Josip Brunšmid in 1913 - Appendix, I - III; Fig. xx - xx; Mirnik 1981, 105, No 459; Delonga 1987, 109), and another more modest one, still unpublished: sixty – three Venetian, Anconitan and Slavonian silver coins.
Among Venetian coins there were three grossi of Gio-vanni Soranzo (1312 - 1328), three grossi and 46 soldini of Francesco Dandolo (1329 - 1339), six soldini of Bartolom-meo Gradenigo (1339 - 1342), as well as three grossi and three soldini of Andrea Dandolo (1343 - 1354). There was also one copper soldino of the city of Ancona, whereas one denar of Stephen IV Babonić (1310 - 1316), one denar and two half denars of Mikac Mihaljević (1325 - 1343) witness the uninteruppted and good links woth the Slavonian part of the Kingdom (Delonga 1987, 109).
If we compare the individual finds from Bribir Glavica with coin hoards from Central Dalmatia, we must come to the conclusion that they correspond to the already known pattern of coin circulation starting with the 13th c. onwards. Speaking about the small silver change one must mention the well-known hoard of piccoli, i.e. bagattini from a grave at Nerežišća on the island of Brač, undug in 1927, contain-ing one coin of each of Venetian dodges Orio Malipiero and Enrico Dandolo, three Veronese struck by Friedrich II the Swabian, as well as 30 Spalatine autonomous silverlings (Mirnik 1974; 1981, 112, No 508). At Slatine on the is-land of Čiovo was in 1897 discovered a treasure of c. 700 tiny silver coins of Split (691) and Venice (Enrico Dan-dolo, Giovanni Dandolo) (Mirnik 1981, 115, No 532), at in Split itself in c. 1800 there was a treasure trove of c. 16 bagattini (Mirnik 1981, 115, No 535). We also know about the Trilj treasure (1962), which consisted of coins of Friedrich II from Brindisi (2) and Verona (2), Venetian piccoli of Orio Malipiero (16) and 82 specimens of Split autonomous strikes (Mirnik 1981, 166, No 543). In 1896 another treasure, consisting entirely of Split bagattini, was unearthed at Žažvić, also near Bribir (Mirnik 1981, 118, No 559), and something similar (106 coins) found at Muć once formed part of the collection of Doimo Savo. This small change was frequently mentioned in 13th and 14th c. documents from Croatian coast in the following formula-tions: librae denariorum Venetie (or Venetorum) parvorum, libre de dinari pizoli da Venesia, librae solidis denariorum parvorum, Romanati parvorum, soldi denariorum Venetorum parvorum, marcae denariorum parvorum Venetorum itd.

denariorum grossorum venetorum in pecunia numerata, a zla-to je još u to vrijeme bilo ispočetka bizantsko, a kasnije i firentinsko: romanati, yperperi, byzantini aurei, ili npr. et a quolibet eorum in solidum quiquaginta bonos florenos de auro (1281), a u odvaganim količinama auri librae, unciae auri.
U polju je grbov-ni štit s orlovim krilom, nad njim kaciga s plaštem i cvjet-nom krijestom, a s obje strane grančice s cvijećem (60 mm; AMZd; Belošević 1965; Delonga 1987a, 113, 115).

Larger denominations were grossi: grossi, librae bonorum de-nariorum grosorum Venetorum, librae bonorum denariorum grossorum Venetorum in pecunia numerata, and gold was still at this time Byzantine, later it becane Florentine: Romanati, yperperi, Byzantini aurei, or for instance et a quolibet eorum in solidum quiquaginta bonos florenos de auro (1281), and in weighed sums auri librae, unciae auri.
A significant fact, which must not be overlooked is that there was s mint in Bribir in early 14th c., when the mighty lords Paul II., his brother Mladen I. and his son Mladen II. issued silver coins imitating Venetian grossi of the Matapan type (Rengjeo 1959, 64 - 65; Delonga 1987, 110 - 111), now very rare and sought for.
As sigillography is closely linked with numismatics, we must mention that in 1961 during archaeological ex-cavations in Zadar the minor seal of Paul Šubić, Count of Bribir, dated between 1299 and 1312 was found. The text, engraved in Gothic minuscule script reads: PAULUS* DE BREBERIO BANUS CROATORUM DNS ET BOSNE between two linear borders. In the field there is the shield with the eagle’s wing, and above it the helmet with mantle and floral crest, and floral branches on each side (60 mm; AMZd; Belošević 1965; Delonga 1987a, 113, 115).

Knin, 8. studenog 1913.Slavnom Ravnateljstvu. Narodnog zem. Muzeja u Zagrebu.

III.
Knin, 2. XII. 1913.Veleučeni Gospodine!
Primio sam u redu klasificirane bribirske novce, izvan ovog izgubljenog.
S veleštovanjem i pozdravom ostajemOdani VamFra L. Marun
