Do not let yourchildren go missingPolice stations in the Helderbergregion are asking parents to takeresponsibility for their childrenduring the festive season.

The police have provided thefollowing tips for parents, care-givers and legal guardians:

. You should always knowwhere and with whom your chil-dren are;

. Spread the idea of goodneighbourliness and watch yourneighbour’s child(ren) whenthey need to go somewhere;

. Get your children to check inwith your neighbours if you arenot home;

. Be on the lookout for stran-gers or strange vehicles in yourarea;

. Child protection starts at

home. When your child goesmissing do not wait 24 hours.Report the matter to your nearestpolice station immediately as thefirst few hours are crucial.

. Supply the police with arecent photograph of the child. Ifyou do not have a photograph,you must still report the child asmissing;

. Become actively involved inthe investigation by askingfriends and family to help withthe search as well as thedistribution of flyers.

Anyone who finds a missingchild can phone 10111.

Child abuse can be reported toChildline on 0800 055 555.

) Also see the police’s varioussector contact numbers on pg 3.

Follow these tips for safe swimming this seasonDrowningsare anall toocommonoccurrenceatourbeachesduringthe festive season, but can easilybe prevented by following thesefew basic rules:

. Never swim at beaches wherethere are no life savers on duty.

It is easy to check if lifeguards areon duty by looking for the big red-and-yellow duty flag, which will beflying from the lifeguards station ina very visible place – this is a clearindication that lifeguards are on du-

ty.. Always swim between these

flags. Lifeguards select the safestswimming area on the day and de-marcate itwithred-and-yellowbath-ing area flags.

Lifeguards may also issue otherinstructions or change the swim-ming area as conditions change, al-ways obey the lifeguards instruc-tions immediately.

. When you enter the water, it isimportant to note where the flagsare and keep looking back to make

sure you are still within the safe ar-ea.

. It is also always a good idea totake note of a landmark that you cansee from the water, so you can orien-tate yourself and check if you are be-ing washed seaward or sidewaysalong the shore.

. If you find yourself in troublein the water, try to remain calm!Stick your arm (preferably both!) inthe air and wave, make your move-ments as big and clear as possibleto make it easier to see you. This isan internationally recognised dis-tress signal and is guaranteed tospur lifeguards into action.

SHARK ATTACKS: you should al-ways respect the sea and its dangersand enter it at your own discretion.By simply by following these safetytips from shark spotters you can re-duce your risk of a shark attack:

. Always consider using a sharkspotter beach, don’t swim in deepwater beyond the breakers and nev-er swim if you are bleeding.

. It is advisable not to swim nearriver mouths or to surf or paddle atnightoronyourownor toswim,surfor paddle when birds, dolphins orseals are feeding.

. Don’t swim, surf or paddle neartrek-netting, fishing or spearfishingactivities and always paddle ingroups and stay close together.

. Pay attention to shark signageon beaches and familiarise yourselfwith shark spotters flags and sirens.

. Don’t dive for rock lobster usinga bait bag. Speak to shark spotters,law enforcement officials or life-guards about the area you plan touse and always obey beach officialsif told to leave the water.

The shark-spotting flag warning system is depicted above. The green flag indicatesgood shark-spotting conditions, the black flag means spotting conditions are poor,the red flag means a high shark alert and a white flag with black shark on it indicatesthat a shark has been spotted in the area and a siren will sound warning everyoneto leave the water immediately.
