Wenn ich eine Lampe schaffen will, beginne ich immer mit einem Prototyp; mein Labor ist eine Werkstatt, wo ich andauernd die verschiedensten Materialen, Komponenten und Gegenstnde ansammle; hier entsteht alles Ich baue zusammen, schweie, biege, gestalteIch muss die Materialen fhlen, sehen, wie sie mit dem Licht spielen. In dieser ersten Phase gibt es keinen wirkliche Entwurf, die Idee muss sofortForm annehmen, zum Gegenstand werden.Erst danach gehe ich zur klassischenKonstruktionsphase ber: Machbarkeit,technische Eigenschaften und hnliches. Es ist die Idee des Lichts, der Wunsch, sie zu erzhlen, die mich bei der Konstruktion leiten.Ich glaube, man fhlt diesen Weg imProdukt Catellani & Smith. Der Groteil meiner Produktion besteht aus Teilen, die betrchtliche handwerkliche Bearbeitungen erfordern:es ist der Handwerker, der sie baut,seine manuelle Arbeit, die Unregelmigkeit schafft und damit den Gegenstand einmalig macht.

Quand je cre une nouvelle lampe je pars toujours du prototype; mon laboratoire est un espace-atelier, o je accumule continuellement des matriaux, des composants, des objets de toutes sortes; cest l que tout nat... jassemble, je soude, je plie, je modlejai besoin de sentir les matriaux, devoir comment ils jouent avec la lumire.Avec cette premire phase il nexiste aucune laboration proprement dite, lide doit prendre forme tout de suite, devenir objet, ce nest quensuite que jepasse la phase classique de llaboration:la faisabilit, les caractristiques techniques, et le reste; cest une ide de lumire, et le dsir de la raconter, qui me guident dans la fabrication. Je crois quen regardant les produits Catellani & Smith on peut ressentir ce parcours.Grande partie de ma production est compose de pices qui requirent un gros travail artisanal: ce qui rend un objet unique, cest la main de lartisan qui le construit, cest son interventionmanuelle qui cre limperfection.
