Venice, 16th May, 2013Once again Venice and Suzhou shaking hands of friendship and collaboration. The relationship between these two towns, has always been long and successful united by an ideal location that is rooted in time. Was Marco Polo, around 1270, to describe Suzhou highlighting his incredible resemblance to the city of the Doges. Over time this bond has strengthened and many were the profitable opportunities of meeting between the city of Venice and that of the city of Suzhou, which I had the pleasure of visiting in April 2011. Today, this relationship is renewed through the " Carnival Dragon Boat " with which the city of Venice is honoured to participate through a delegation composed of students of the prestigious Venice University of Venice ,Ca ' Foscari and Iuav University of architecture. I am pleased to renew the spirit of friendship between these two cities in the belief that many others will be the meeting opportunities that will arise in our future.

The Venice Expo Committee is an association established in August 4, 2009 by Institutional components of the Venetian area forthe participation of Venice in the ShanghaiExpo 2010 and Milan Expo 2015. The Venice Expo Committee supported by local authorities, institutions, universities, associations of categories and companies,has promoted the participation of the local Venetian system and Venetian firms at Shanghai Expo 2010, aiming to deepenthe knowledge of the Chinese market and promote the potential of the Venetian territory, reinforcing the image of Veniceand its reference area as a dynamic centerof international character.The Venice Expo Committee even afterthe closing of Expo Shanghai, continuesto maintain and develop institutional relations with China.To support and promote these activitiesthe City Government has set up a special China Desk with the task of preparing and reporting activities and representation, development of cultural and economic relations, targeted projects of tourist report.

威尼斯世博会组委会，是威尼斯参加2010年上海世博会及2015年年米兰世博会之际，由威尼斯地区各公共机构于2009年8月4日正式成立的组织。威尼斯世博会组委会得到了地方当局、机构、大学、协会和企业的支持，推动威尼斯地方体系和威尼托企业参与2010年上海世博会，以加深对中国市场的认识，发挥威尼托地区的潜力，加强威尼斯及相关地区作为国际加强威尼斯及相关地区作为国际性的活力中心的形象。在上海世博会闭幕之后，威尼斯世博会组委会继续保持和发展与中国各机构的友好关系为了支持和推动这些活动，本市专门建立了中国信息中心发展文化和经济关系，开展针对旅游关系的项目。

In the years after the inaugurationof Shanghai World Expo the Venice Expo Committee has seen increasing contactsand relationships with the Chinese business world. In these years many delegations were received in Venice from China's richest provinces, concerned about how our city, much loved by the Chinese people, has faced and solved various problems such as transport, tourist flows, welfare etc.For its part, the Committee was repeatedlya guest at fairs and meetings in China to cement the friendship that binds our two worlds, even in the name of Marco Polo in Venice were arranged cultural and artistic events to acquaint the millennial Chinese culture in Italy.

The University “Ca ' Foscari” was founded on August 6, 1868 as high school of Commerce,is the first University in Venice and the first institution in Italy to deal with higher education in the field of trade and economy. Since then, the historic site is located in the great gothic building in "volta de canal", in the heart of the city. The wide rangeof training activities is divided into 4 large scientific-cultural areas: economic, humanistic and scientific language. The didactic offer proposed by 8 departments and 6 interdepartmental schools is of 15 three-year degree courses and 29 master classes, 39 University Masters and 11 PhD courses.Ca’ Foscari University of Venice teaches approximately 20,000 students and covers four large scientific and cultural areas (corresponding to the four Faculties in force until 2010): Economics, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Humanities and Sciences. Sincethe academic year 2011/2012 the university has been organized into 8 Departments and 6 Interdepartmental Schools, responsiblefor research and teaching activities of First and Second Cycle Degree Programmes.

Three university structures exist alongside these: Ca' Foscari Graduate School [IT], which coordinates Research Doctorates; Ca’ Foscari Challenge School [IT], which organises Specialist Master’s Programmes (1st and 2nd level) and other courses for continuing education; Ca’ Foscari Summer School, which promotes intensive summer and autumn courses and other extracurricular activitiesfor Italian and international students. Ca’ Foscari University of Venice also offers English-taught programmes and double/joint degrees, which along with numerous cooperation agreements with European and extra-European institutions and universities, enrich the international focus that has always been a feature of the university, increasing the mobility of students, researchersand professors. One of the first Architecture Schools in Italy (established in 1926), the Università Iuav di Venezia is a ‘themed’ university totally focusing on design. It is a dedicated place for teaching, specialisation and field research in design of living space and environments such as buildings, cities, landscapes, regions as well as design of every-day use objects, cultural, theatrical, multimedia events, fashion and graphics. The Università Iuav di Venezia is organised into three departments: “Architecture, Building Technology and Conservation”, "Design and Planning for Complex Environments”, "Design Culture". Educational programmes, courses and activities are divided into 5 undergraduate degree programmes and 8 graduate degree programmes that are project-driven in fields of architecture, design, fashion, visual arts, urban and regional planning, theatre, in addition to a number of postgraduate specialisation programmes, advanced specialisation courses and 9 research doctorates. Iuav has successfully devised a unique learning mode that is especially suitable to transmitting project knowledge: workshops are in fact a real workshop for experiencing and learning under the direct guidance of high-calibre professionals and professors in the practice and design teaching fields. The University has entered into agreements with a number of institutions and cultural subjects in Venice, in the region and abroad (La Biennale di Venezia, Teatro La

Fenice, Palazzo Grassi, Musei Civici Veneziani, teatro Due di Parma, theatres in Rome and Turin, Triennale di Torino, Philadelphia Museum, New York University, MIT of Boston) that involved and still involve students in artistic, design and theatrical productions. Iuav invests a lot in research concerning issues related to the city, region and environment, landscape, infrastructure and mobility, protection and conservation, sustainable design, history of architecture, the new frontiers of design, arts and theatre. The University boasts a system of studios equipped with high specialist equipment and expertise, also made available to external clients, along with a library heritage within the architecture and urban planning fields that is a crucial point of reference on a national basis. About 6,000 students attend this University (admission to the various degree programmes is limited, which is an essential requirement needed to guarantee teaching quality). International Exchange Programmes are currently being offered in cooperation with 130 European Universities for the promotion of students’, researchers’ and faculty’s mobility, with a view to developing a common European citizenship, exchange of good practices and sharing of researches. Furthermore, the Università Iuav di Venezia has also established cooperation and exchange relationships with non-EU institutions and universities with which has entered into over 60 agreements aiming at students’ mobility.
