Problems inOhrigstadH e n n i e F o u r i e writes:I wish to bring to the a t t e n t i o n o f t h e munic ipal i ty and district authority that in Ohrigstad for the past 3 months street lights are switched off, roads not being fixed, bushes are o v e r g r o w n o n sidewalks.What is the local municipality really d o i n g f o r o u r c o m m u n i t y i n Ohrigstad. From what I can see the state of our small town is a damn shame to pay these people for no work and lack of service.Somebody should take the responsibility a n d c o m e d r i v e through Ohrigstad and take note of what is happening in real life and stop riding the gravy train.

The Lydenburg and Berg Street areas were without water for days on end again the last couple of days, especially over the weekend. Residents of Ward 12 quickly took to their WhatsApp group and shared photos. Some residents went out to witness the water problems with their own eyes on Sunday afternoon. It needs to be said that Thaba Chweu is well aware of the problems and are fixing it as well they can. But the whole water system needs replacement. The smaller pipelines are especially disintegrated, including the valves. A large number of valves and pipes are asbestos and those need to be replaced with PVC. • A Ward 12 meeting with TCM is being planned for Thursday 27 May at 17:45. Phone Nicko Janse van Vuuren at 079 848 8454 for more info. Please attend and don’t just complain about the problems.

This leak was on the corner of Berg and Viljoen Streets. But it

was also repaired later the same day on 22 May.

Daar was meer as 650

Jaarliks is daar 70 000 besoekers , 23 v e r v e r s i n g s t a l l e t j i e s e n d i e skouterrein word bedien deur sy eie kragnetwerk, 9 boorgate en gebruik daagliks 450 000 liter water.

et my arm styf gevorm oor my kop het ek aan my ander oor probeer Mraak.

Ek was seker so drie of vier jaar oud. Hoe moes ek nou weet ‘n kind groei net 'n fraksie van 'n millimeter per dag. As ek aan my oor kon raak sou ek skoolgereed wees.

R. Vogt writes via email: As a fairly regular visitor to your town, which is slowly turning from a once lovely town into “junk status” due mainly to the corrupt local govt officials who squander astronomical sums of tax payers money & turn blind eyes to the deteriorating conditions. What amazes me is that huge articulated ore carriers are permitted to use the mainly two roads; Viljoen and Voortrekker Streets, which are in a disgusting state, being damaged by referred vehicles, I will not mention the other streets in your town that are also full of many large pot holes !These “ore carriers” are the reason the main Lydenburg-Bambi road was destroyed! Now they

are using the Longtom Pass both ways, what was once an excellent scenic drive to Sabie, has now become rather treacherous; being a marathon runner I could run faster to Sabie; travelling to Nelspruit now takes at times 3 hours. Another thing that puzzles me is that there is a railroad which at times has several diesel-electric units hauling ore carrying trucks attached on the way to Belfast? It is my humble opinion that “someone” has landed a very lucitrive contract or a mine (mines) have paid substantial amounts of money for corrupt officials “to look the other way”.Seeing the large number of new trucks hauling ore up LongTom Pass, & quite obviously; many officials pockets have been well lined, & must be smiling at their bank accounts; even into the SANRAL realm; who must maintain the road to Sabie. What will happen when lives are lost on the mountain pass due to these trucks; and it will sadly, eventually happen; but then like ALL govt departments, nobody will be held accountable, like our so called 'president' is always stating….I know nothing (duh) if corruption was not so rife in our country, I might (just) have another view point.

EACH year, millions of children around the globe are lured or forced into sexual exploitation. Criminal individuals, organisations and networks devise sophisticated means to lure children and escape justice. Nedbank, in partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI) and The Corporate Responsibility to Eliminate the Sale of Children (CRES) have forged ties to put an end the exploitation of children in South Africa. The initiative focuses on mobilising the private sector to play a major role in permanently disrupting one of the worst crimes against children of today. “We are glad to play our part in the fight against this horrific crime and to meaningfully contribute towards putting an end to the sexual exploitation of children. This forms part of Nedbank Group's Human Rights Statement and our business philosophy to protect, respect and support remedial efforts with regard to human rights,” says Driekie Havenga, Group Ethics Officer at Nedbank. As an initial step, CRES is asking the private sector to take a stand by joining a common pledge of support. Nedbank is the first corporate member to take a stand with CRES. “We are convinced that the criminality can be stopped if all actors of society dare to see, take a stand and work together. We hope that many companies will take a stand and pledge support for the elimination of sexual exploitation,” says Joanna Lundquist, Swedish children's rights lawyer and co-founder of CRES.

LANDOWNERS need to join their local fire association - PAPFA or LEFPA as well as purchase the burn permits. Recent cases have shown that insurance companies will not pay out for spread of wildfire, even if you have everything in place (proper firebreaks etc) if you are not a member of your fire association. Why become a member of an FPA? Insurance - Insurers of rural premises insist on membership as a prerequisite for cover.Legal action - In the case of civil proceedings arising from damage caused by wildfires, a defendant who is not a member of an FPA is presumed negligent in relation to the wildfire until the contrary is proved. Members of an FPA enjoy the normal legal presumptions, putting the burden of proof on the plaintiff.FPAs are required to disseminate to their members information regarding the weather that has a bearing on the dangers of wildfires. Some PAFPA wards receive twice-daily FDI (Fire Danger Index) reports by cellphone and radio. To join P A F P A c o n t a c t t h e m o n [email protected]

Mashishing Secondary School is overall winner in debate HYDROGEN and fuel cells were in the minds and on the lips of many school learners at this year's national science debating competition provincial finals. Mashising Secondary School (1st place), Lowveld High School (2nd place) and Dlomodlomo Secondary School (3rd place) are the top three winning schools out of ten participating Mpumalanga schools who represented the province at the Provincial Final of the 2016 SAASTA National School Debates Competition which took place on Friday 20 May. Mashising Secondary School as the overall winning team will go on to compete against the eight other provincial winners in the National final in Johannesburg on Thursday, 6 October. The competition aims to encourage young people to address key issues around science and technology that are faced by their communities, through the medium of debate. Conceived and hosted by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), a business unit of the National Research Foundation, the programme seeks to foster the confidence to speak about science in high school students from Grades 9 to 11. It also gives participants the opportunity to develop research, critical thinking and information literacy skills, as well as the ability to work as a team to present logical, clear arguments. The 60 schools who competed in the

provincial finals across the country were chosen on the basis of their winning essays selected by SAASTA. The topic of the essay was: The use of nanotechnology in treatment of polluted water and how it shows great promise in water scarce countries in Africa, such as South Africa. For the provincial finals, students were given a relevant and challenging topic to research and debate: Do you think Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (HFCT) can improve the quality of life for all South Africans by contributing significantly to the national energy supply or is HFCT more applicable in industry specific local applications?“Debate is a lively and valuable platform that makes scientific information relevant to learners; it's the spark that can light the fire which fuels a lifelong quest for innovation,” added Ellis. Throughout the day, judges evaluated debaters for their participation, including responses to arguments and questions within discussions. The winning team from each region will go on to participate in the finals in October. In addition to increasing their knowledge and gaining experience in the debating arena, the winning national team will be awarded a trip to New York, which includes scientific exploration as well as tourism.

A total of nine 2.2 TDCi automatic variants will be available (across all three body-styles), boosting the revised local Ford Ranger line-up to 36 models.“The success of the automatic transmission option on the Ford Ranger is unprecedented, with almost 70% of buyers opting for the auto instead of the manual in the powerful 3,2-litre models,” said Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.Delate cited “growing customer interest” in the option of an automatic transmission on the 2,2-litre models, adding that the Ranger will be “one of the first pick-ups in the LCV segment to offer an automatic transmission on the smaller-capacity intermediate derivatives”.Pricing is set to be announced closer to launch.carmag.co.za

AFTER poaching Bentley's design chief last year, Hyundai has also just secured the services of the luxury marque's lead exterior designer.Hyundai issued a statement saying Sangyup Lee will start work next month as its head of design, after Reuters reported the hiring of the Korean designer by the South Korean auto giant.Lee is being brought in to work with Luc Donckerwolke, a Peruvian-born Belgian, to lead Hyundai's development of its Genesis premium car brand - a project driven by Chung Euisun, heir-apparent to the Hyundai Group.“Lee will help... enhance the design competitiveness of both the Hyundai and Genesis brands with his abundant experience in designing high-end luxury vehicles,” Hyundai said in its statement.Hyundai sees limited growth unless it breaks into new markets, a person close to the carmaker told Reuters. For the South Korean firm, that means premium cars and maybe pick-up trucks.Lee said he has joined Hyundai Motor as a vice president in charge of Hyundai and Genesis design, reporting to Donckerwolke, who will head up Hyundai's new Prestige Design Division, as well as being global head of Hyundai design - a reporting arrangement that Hyundai also confirmed on Monday.Bentley spokesman Andrew Roberts confirmed Lee “has resigned from Bentley to take a position at another brand.”Lee, 46, ran Bentley's exterior design since 2012 having previously worked at Volkswagen group's design center in California, and General Motors. He played a lead role in designing the Chevrolet Corvette, Stingray and Camaro - which featured in the “Transformers” movies - and Bentley's Bentayga SUV.Lee, who says he was first approached by Hyundai two years ago, said he and

Donckerwolke plan to design Genesis cars from a “clean sheet of paper”.“ F o r d e c a d e s , luxury brands such as Bentley, Aston Martin and Maserati have been about possession,” he said. “In the future, a s d i s r u p t i v e technologies kick in, luxury is going to be about experience. People are going to look for a special experience rather than someth ing special to own.”As “mobi l i ty on demand” - the once futuristic concept of calling up a robot-car by smartphone - takes hold, Hyundai p r e d i c t s m a n y households in the United States, its biggest market, will no longer own two, or three cars, but spend more on one car, said the person c l o s e t o t h e company.“ T h a t m e a n s upscale cars,” he s a i d , a d d i n g “profitability-wise,

the luxury segment is much better, too.”That fits with Chung's aspiration to not just drive the Genesis brand but elevate the Hyundai name to an elite global corporate league alongside the likes of BMW, Boeing and Apple.“That's his legacy. ES (Euisun) wants to make Hyundai a truly globally recognized and respected company,” the person said.Chung was involved with hiring both Donckerwolke and Lee, as well as Manfred Fitzgerald, former brand and design director at Lamborghini who was named earlier this year as head of Genesis, said another person with knowledge of the matter.Reuters & iol.motoring.co.za

A 1974 Volkswagen Beetle with just 90 kilometres on the clock from new is set to go under the hammer in Denmark. The 42-year-old Beetle will be sold at Silverstone Auctions’ Classic Race Aarhus Auction at the end of May.With just one owner from new and only 90 km under its belt, this Beetle is still in its original condition.Finished in blue with a black leather interior, the left-hand drive manual example still holds the original oil in the engine and is shod with its first set of tyres. The original books and invoice, along with the tool kit, are also supplied with the car.According to the auction house, an elderly man named Armando Sgroi bought the vehicle new from G. Terragni Volkswagen in Genoa, Italy, back in January 1974. He had never owned a car before and apparently did not particularly want this one.But he was a deeply religious man and ended up driving rather than walking to a nearby church as he became frail with age.

The car was used even less as his church-going became more infrequent, up until its last outing in 1978, after which it was retired to a barn, where it remained for almost

four decades.The Beetle was r e c e n t l y r e d i s c o v e r e d and has been l i g h t l y recommissioned. For sale for only the second time in its life, it will head to auction with an estimate of €35 000 to €40 000 (R624 000 to R713 000).carmag.co.za

Must-knows about property after the death of a loved oneIT is well known that in South Africa the sale of property must be recorded in a written contract and must be signed by the purchaser and seller. The sale of a property out of a deceased estate is, however, more complex.Laurence van Blerck of Knight Frank Residential SA says ideally the deceased would have made a will and appointed a professional, such as the family attorney, to be the executor of the deceased estate. Alternatively, a family member may be appointed, together with an attorney.Once the estate has been reported, normally within 14 days of death, to the Master of the Supreme Court, the Master will appoint an executor by issuing Letters of Executorship.Van Blerck says it can take approximately eight weeks for the Master to issue Letters of Executorship, and no one has the authority to act for the estate until these are issued. The process, however, can sometimes be sped up. The executor has the task of winding up the estate of the deceased and is the only person who has authority to sign on behalf of a deceased estate. For example, an estate agent's mandate to sell the property can only be signed by the executor(s). It is important to note that a sale agreement, signed on behalf of the estate by a person other than the executor, is not valid from the outset, and the subsequent signature by an executor will not ratify the sale.“If there is more than one executor, all executors must sign the sale agreement,” says Van Blerck.“Alternatively, if a resolution by the executors empowers one executor to sign, this resolution must be executed and signed before the date of signing the sale agreement.”

He says the estate agent must ensure the sale agreement includes a special condition stating that the sale is subject to the approval of the Master. There is a prescribed format which sets out the information required. The sale agreement must also be subject to the prior written permission of the heirs in the estate. This is a legal requirement and is lodged simultaneously with the application to obtain the approval of the Master. The format of this consent essentially means that the heirs confirm their agreement to the selling price of the property, the method of payment and terms and conditions of sale.“Until these two consents are obtained there is no binding contract. Once the Master is satisfied that there are no objections to the sale, permission for transfer will be granted,” says Van Blerck. The extra requirements of a sale out of a deceased estate inevitably mean that there will be additional delays, both in concluding the sale agreement and taking transfer at the Deeds Office.“It is important that a purchaser is advised of these delays and kept informed as matters progress, or not, as the case may be,” says Van Blerck. “It is advisable to ensure that your estate agent understands all the requirements of this specialised type of sale, communicates well with all the stakeholders, and together with the executor takes responsibility for driving the process so that no unnecessary delays occur.” property24.com

Repot your indoor plantsIF winter weather is forcing you indoors and yet you are still itching to do some gardening, then why not give your indoor and patio plants some attention? A wide range of fashionable décor containers are available at garden centres, so spend a fun-filled day at the nursery choosing some new stoneware, terracotta or ceramic containers and repot those tired old plants. This will give your home's interior or outside verandah an instant lift and provide the life of your garden with new vigour. If you would like to add some instant colour to your home, choose from the wide range of stunning indoor plants now available in garden centres. Try African violet, begonia, cyclamen, peace lily, calceolaria, kalanchoe, cymbidium orchids, chrysanthemums, cineraria and Primula acaulis.Individual indoor plants can be repotted into a larger container, or also consider taking several plants in small plastic containers and repotting them into one very large, more glamorous, patio container. Landscapers have always said one really good container is worth 20 untidy plastic ones.Wet the soil of your plant before trying to prize it out of its pot. Moist soil will help the plant to slip out easily.Set the plant on its side. Hold the main stem with your left hand and use your right hand to gently tap the rim of the pot with a hammer. Give the pot a turn and repeat. The aim is to separate the pot from the plant.Once the plant is free, untwist matted roots by combing them with a fork. Cut away gnarled roots and tease out the ball of roots.Place a layer of pebbles, broken pieces of crockery or a geotextile drainage mat over the drainage holes of the pot.Secure the plant in the new pot, ensuring that the soil surface is a centimetre or two below the rim. Add potting soil mixture to the sides and bottom of the container. Press the soil down the sides to eliminate air pockets.Smooth a thin layer of potting soil over the top surface to cover exposed roots, and water thoroughly.Place a layer of mulch across the top of the soil. To conserve water in your indoor plant, spread bark chips or attractive pebbles across the top of the pot.www.lifesagarden.co.za
