Once again, the traditional, international horse races, founded in 1907, will come up with a spectacular programme. The meeting for noble thoroughbreds and international jockeys in the colours of first-class racing stables, who provide thrilling races for fame and honour on the flattest race track in the world, is well-known far beyond national borders. Spectacular sporting highlights are guaranteed at the world-exclusive Credit Suisse Skikjöring, in the high quality BMW Trotting Race, and at the Gübelin Grand Prix of St. Moritz that is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Together with the proverbial ‘champagne climate’ and amidst the beautiful mountain setting, every year this truly sparkling event draws tens of thousands into its spell and enthrals them.White Turf is part of the small exclusive group of official ‘Top Events of Switzerland’. The European championship on snow, the ‘Gübelin –Grand Prix of St. Moritz’, has the highest stakes of all Swiss racing sports, with the legendary prize money of CHF 135,135, while at the ‘BMW – Grand Trotting Prize Pontresina’ the total prize money distributed is CHF 25,000.

fakten und zahlenAuf der rund 765’000 m2 grossen Fläche des St. Moritzersees werden in tagelanger Arbeit 60’000 m2 Geläuf und 70’000 m2 Eventbereich angelegt. Über 75 Zeltbauten werden erstellt, davon auf ca. 3‘100 m2 das VIP-Zelt für die geladenen Gäste. Rund 1‘200 Prominente aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft werden pro Sonntag im VIP-Zelt kulinarisch verwöhnt. 40 bis 50 Tonnen Lebensmittel werden allein an den drei Renntagen verbraucht. Daneben werden beim Public Catering 8’000 Würste, 1’000 Portionen chinesische Spezialitäten, 750 Portionen Risotto, 950 Portionen Raclette und u. a. gut 2’000 gefüllte Schokoladenkugeln verkauft. Rund 100 Jour-nalisten akkreditieren sich jedes Wochenende im Pressezelt auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee und werden durch das Presse-Team ganztags betreut und verpflegt.

More than 75 tents have to be put up including the VIP marquees of just under 3,100 sqm for the invited guests. About 1,200 VIPs, celebrities from business, politics and high society are served culinary delights in the VIP marquees on each race Sunday. No less than 40 to 50 tons of food are consumed on the three racing days. In addition, the public catering sold 8,000 sausages, 1,000 portions of Chinese specialities, 750 portions of risotto, 950 portions of raclette and well over 2,000 small, cream-filled chocolate cakes. Almost 100 journalists were accredited on each weekend in the press tent on the frozen lake of St. Moritz. They were attended to and catered for all day long by the press team.

Im letzten Jahr erwartete die Zuschauer ein ganz besonderes Rennen: Beim Prominenten-Skikjöring wagten sich Stars aus der Schweizer Sportszene auf Skiern hinter galoppierende Rennpferde! Ariane Ehrat, Renato Tosio, Silvio M. Staub, Franco Marvulli, Gian Gilli und Steffi Bucheli begeisterten das Publikum mit ihrem grandiosen Einsatz. Immerhin erreichten die edlen Rennpferde ein Tempo von 50km/h und mehr, wobei sie jeweils von einem erfahrenen Jockey geritten wurden, damit niemand zu Schaden kommt. Auch 2014 dürfen sich die Zuschauer auf ein unterhaltsames Prominenten-Skikjöring in neuer Besetzung freuen!

Stars from the Swiss sporting scene dared to race on skis behind the galloping race horses at the celebrity Skikjöring! Ariane Ehrat, Renato Tosio, Silvio M. Staub, Franco Marvulli, Gian Gilli and Steffi Bucheli thrilled the public by their heroic performances. After all, the noble steeds achieved speeds of 50km/h and more. However, they were ridden by experienced jockeys, so that nobody came to any harm. In 2014 again, the spectators can look forward to an entertaining celebrity Skikjöring with a new line-up!

Beim „H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Listed Cup“ fegten 2013 erstmals ausschliesslich Vollblut-Araber über die Rennbahn auf Eis. Der Sieg wanderte durch Fanal El Samawi in den deutschen Stall von Regine Weissmeier, deren Sohn Fabian Xaver Weissmeier im Sattel sass. Dieses Araberrennen stellte eine grosse Bereicherung im White Turf-Renngeschehen dar und wird auch 2014 stattfinden. Zudem etablieren die begeisterten Vertreter der arabischen Rennszene gleich ein zweites spannendes Araberrennen: Beim „H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR)“ wird es sich um das höchstdotierte Rennen für Amazonen im Rennsattel handeln.

This Arabian race, which was a major enhancement at the White Turf racing scene, will take place again in 2014. 89 Jahre ist es her, seit am 3. Februar 1924 der damals sechsjährige Sinnfein unter seinem Reiter George Archibald den ersten Grossen Preis von St. Moritz gewann. Der Wallach muss ein eisenhartes Rennpferd gewesen sein. Eine Woche zuvor war er schon Zweiter geworden und gewann sogar drei Tage vor dem Grand Prix ein weiteres Vorbereitungsrennen.Pompejus war in den Jahren 1929 und 1930 der erste Grand-Prix-Doppelsieger, dem noch viele zweifache Schneespezialisten folgen sollten. So auch Meerwind, der nach der Wiederaufnahme der Rennen nach dem 2. Weltkrieg zum Doppelsieger avancierte. Der heute 93-jährige Hein Bollow sass damals im Sattel. Unvergessen ist die Entscheidung im Grossen Preis von St. Moritz des Jahres 1971. Die Engadiner Post schrieb damals: „Die Rennleitung vermochte selbst nach Konsultation des Zielfotos keine Differenz im Einlauf von Obermain und Mariner festzustellen und musste den Richterspruch „totes Rennen“ verkünden.“ Im Sattel von Obermain sass Kurt Schafflützel, Mariner wurde vom erst im Herbst 2013 im Alter von 90 Jahren verstorbenen Fritz Drechsler geritten. Letzterem gelang es jedoch zwölf Monate später mit Mariner den Grand Prix noch einmal zu seinen Gunsten zu entscheiden.Kurios ging es 1988 zu. Die Jockeys drohten mit einem Streik, weil die Gegenseite der Bahn nicht benutzbar sei. So blieb keine andere Wahl als den Grand Prix über die lange Zielgerade laufen zu lassen. Nach gerade einmal 800 Metern stand Kyros als schnellster Sprinter fest und mit Gerhard Huber sass ausgerechnet einer der „Rädelsführer“ im Sattel des Siegers.Um 14:10 Uhr am 23. Februar 2014 wird das wichtigste Rennen bei White Turf zum 75. Mal ausgetragen. Der Gübelin 75. Grosse Preis von St. Moritz weist dabei mit CHF 150‘150.- eine Rekorddotierung auf. Es bleibt die spannende Frage: Wer wird Nachfolger von Russian Tango, dem Sieger aus dem Jahre 2013?

It was 89 years ago, on 3rd February 1924, that Sinnfein, then aged six, won the first Grand Prix of St. Moritz under his rider George Archibald. The gelding must have been a very tough racehorse. Only one week earlier he had taken second place in a race, and had even won a preparation race three days before the Grand Prix.In the years 1929 and 1930, Pompejus was the first double winner of a Grand Prix, followed later by a great number of double snow specialists. One of them was Meerwind, who gained a double victory after the revival of the races following the Second World War. Hein Bollow, today aged 93, sat in the saddle. Moreover, the final decision at the Grand Prix of St. Moritz in 1971 remains unforgotten. The newspaper Engadiner Post wrote: ‘Even after consultation of the finishing line photograph, the race management could not detect any difference between Obermain and Mariner, and had to announce the judgment of a ‘dead heat finish‘. Kurt Schafflützel sat in the saddle of Obermain, and Mariner was ridden by Fritz Drechsler, who passed away this autumn at the age of 90. Twelve months after that race, he succeeded in winning the Grand Prix with Mariner.In 1988, things were rather strange. The jockeys threatened strike action because the opposite side of the race track was unusable. There was no other option than to hold the Grand Prix race on the long finishing straight. After only 800 meters, Kyros was clearly the fastest sprinter, and with Gerhard Huber it happened to be the ‘ringleader of the strike’ who sat in the saddle of the winner.At 2.10 p.m. on 23rd February 2014, the important White Turf race will take place for the 75th time. „Es macht einfach Spass, bei den grossen sportlichen Anlässen immer wieder dabei zu sein, um anderen eine Freude zu bereiten.“ Dieser Satz stammt von einem Voluntari, einem jener unzähligen, freiwilligen Helfer, auf die kaum ein Veranstalter bei den sportlichen Grossveranstaltungen in und um St. Moritz verzichten kann. Sie reisen aus der gesamten Region des Engadins an – teils schon seit Jahrzehnten – und stehen in jeder Saison erneut zur Verfügung. Was Oma und Opa schon vorlebten wird von Tochter und Sohn übernommen und von Enkelin und Enkel weitergeführt. Viele Voluntaris verbindet eine grosse Familientradition. Es zeigen aber auch immer wieder neue Freiwillige ihr Interesse, ganz vorne bei den grossen Sportanlässen mit dabei zu sein.Auch White Turf kann in aller Regelmässigkeit auf viele Fans und Freunde zurückgreifen, die tatkräftig den weltweit attraktivsten Pferdesport-Anlass auf Schnee unterstützen und zu seinem Gelingen beitragen. Auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee stehen an den drei Februar-Sonntagen zwar die schnellen und edlen Vierbeiner im Mittelpunkt, aber um das „Drumherum“ kümmern sich bei den Veranstaltungen die zahlreichen Voluntaris.

Frühmorgens, wenn der eiskalte Rennplatz noch im Schatten der Berge liegt, geht es an den Renntagen schon los. Die Tribünen müssen sauber und einladend wirken, damit sich das Publikum wohlfühlt. Hat es in der Nacht davor geschneit, müssen die Sitzplätze und die Zugangswege vom Schnee befreit werden. Schliesslich sollen am Nachmittag die Zuschauer ihre Plätze gefahrlos erreichen. Vor dem grossen VIP-Zelt rollt ein Voluntari den langen roten Teppich aus, und an den Eingängen postieren sich die Voluntaris, um die Billette zu verkaufen und zu kontrollieren. Die Freiwilligen sind auch beim Totopersonal zu finden. Dort werden die Wettscheine verkauft, die zu hoffentlich grossen Gewinnen bei den Wettern führen.Jeder einzelne von ihnen kommt während des Meetings seiner Aufgabe nach, die mit Freude bewältigt wird. Die Voluntaris trugen in den vergangenen Jahren entscheidend zum Erfolg von White Turf bei. Und so wird es auch in Zukunft sein, wenn White Turf mit Hilfe der Voluntaris zu weiteren Höhenflügen ansetzt und die Erfolge weiter ausbaut. Gerade den Voluntaris gebührt schon deshalb ein herzlicher Dank seitens White Turf.

‘It is always a real pleasure to help at major sports events in order to give enjoyment to others.’ This sentence was pronounced by a volunteer, one of the numerous voluntary helping staff members who are indispensable for almost all organisers of major sports events in and around St. Moritz. They arrive from all over the Engadine – some of them have been coming for decades – and are available one season after the other. The example set by grandfather and grandmother is adopted by sons and daughters and continued by the grandchildren. Many volunteers are bound by a long-lasting family tradition. However, there are also new volunteers showing their interest and wanting to assist with the big sports events.White Turf, too, can regularly rely on a great number of fans and friends, who provide energetic assistance to the most attractive horserace sports event on snow in the world, and contribute to its success. Even though the fast and noble quadrupeds are the main attraction on the three race Sundays on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, everything going on around the event is made possible by the numerous volunteers.

They start to get busy early in the morning, when the freezing race track is still in the shade of the mountains. The stands must look clean and inviting so that the public feels at ease. If snow has fallen during the night, it must be removed from the seats and the access paths. After all, in the afternoon the spectators must be able to reach their seats safely. A volunteer rolls out the long red carpet in front of the VIP marquees, and other volunteers are posted at the entrances to sell and check admission tickets. They are also to be found among the betting staff, where they sell betting slips from which betters hope to gain big prizes. During the meeting, each one of the volunteers accomplishes his task with pleasure. In recent years the volunteers have contributed significantly to the success of White Turf. And it will continue in the same way in the future, when White Turf introduces new projects and further expands its success with their help. The volunteers deserve cordial thanks for everything they do on behalf of White Turf.
