Calling the scam an “unprece- dented fraud”, Left leaders ac- cused the Mamata Banerjee government of refusing inves- tigation by central agencies and not doing enough to recov- er “hard earned” savings of people. CPM leader Sitaram Ye- chury, who led the delegation, said the new legislation being brought by the state govern- ment is a ploy to delay action so that chit fund firms can re- locate their assets. Later, Y echury told report- ers that the PM and finance minister have promised ac- tion. “The PM said many min- istries need to work together to deal with chit fund scam. We suggested that a task force be formed in the finance minis- try,” he said Leaderof theopposi tionin the Bengal assembly, Surjya Kanta Mishra, said the new bill has been brought by the Mamata government to “allow the scamsters an escape route”. Yechury and Mishra said that state’s withdrawal of a 2003 legislation, brought by the erstwhile Left Front gov- ernment, and passed unani- mously by the assembly , is “blatantly unconstitutional”. “Even Trinamool MLAs had voted in its favour. Since when has Trinamool govern- ment started listening to the Centre? Also prior approval of the assembly was not taken be- fore the government asked the Centre to withdraw the earlier bill,” Mishra said. Former Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta pointed out that the fraud had inter-state implications and that the gov ernments o f As- sam, Tripura and Odisha have also sought a CBI probe.
