New Delhi/Kolkata: Leftparties on Thursday met thePresident, Prime Minister andfinance minister with the de-mand for CBI investigationunder court supervision intothe Ponzi scheme scam inBengal.
They also want a crack-
down by RBI, Sebi and SFIO.Calling the scam an “unprece-dented fraud”, Left leaders ac-cused the Mamata Banerjeegovernment of refusing inves-tigation by central agenciesand not doing enough to recov-er “hard earned” savings of people.
CPM leader Sitaram Ye-chury, who led the delegation, said the new legislation beingbrought by the state govern-ment is a ploy to delay actionso that chit fund firms can re-locate their assets.
Later, Yechury told report-
ers that the PM and financeminister have promised ac-tion. “The PM said many min-istries need to work together todeal with chit fund scam. Wesuggested that a task force beformed in the finance minis-try,” he said
Leader of the opposition inthe Bengal assembly, SurjyaKanta Mishra, said the new
bill has been brought by theMamata government to “allowthe scamsters an escaperoute”. Yechury and Mishrasaid that state’s withdrawal of a 2003 legislation, brought bythe erstwhile Left Front gov-ernment, and passed unani-mously by the assembly, is“blatantly unconstitutional”.
“Even Trinamool MLAshad voted in its favour. Sincewhen has Trinamool govern-ment started listening to theCentre? Also prior approval of the assembly was not taken be-fore the government asked the
Centre to withdraw the earlierbill,” Mishra said.
Former Bengal financeminister Asim Dasguptapointed out that the fraud hadinter-state implications andthat the governments of As-sam, Tripura and Odisha havealso sought a CBI probe.
Trinamool MP DerekO’Brien slammed the Leftmove, saying: “On Rabindra
Jayanti, a day Bengal cele-brates Gurudeb Rabindra-nath and abjures politicking, true to form CPM doesn’t. Ithas resorted to dirty games.”
Yechury countered this bysaying: “We hang our heads inshame today. Tagore hadhoped for a place ‘where themind is without fear and thehead is held high’.”
Trinamool general secre-
tary Partha Chatterjee criti-cized CPM for seeking a CBIprobe. “It is they who were un-able to pass an effective bill torein in chit fund companieswhen they were in power,” hesaid, adding that Trinamoolwill state whatever it has to sayat a rally in Burdwan on Fri-day to be addressed by chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
State Congress presidentPradip Bhattacharya said thatTrinamool leaders, includingMamata, are putting forward“unreasonable arguments” tostop a CBI probe out of fear.“They know if a CBI probe isconducted into the chit fundscam, it will reveal some infor-mation that will prove danger-ous for them,” he said. Refer-ring to the state government’sproposal of a social securityscheme, Bhattacharya said:“We have seen a private chitfund. We don’t want a govern-ment chit fund.”
