The word X is commonly used in science to describe a large agglomeration of objects that appear, from a distance, as a X.

Another explanation is that the old programs that drew network schematics surrounded some icons with a circle and the overlapping circles resembled a X.

In analogy, the word X was used as a metaphor for the internet and a X shape was used to denote a network or the internet in network diagrams like in the original ARPANET schematics.

XY was first used in its modern sense in a Compaq internal document and the popularisation of the term can be traced to 2006 when Amazon introduced its Elastic Y’X.
