Linz Exchange

18 Stellies are taking part in the Linz exchange programme this year. We hosted the learners from the International School in Linz, Austria from the 30th January to the 9th February this year. We went on different excursions each day, to places like the Ostrich Farm, Table Mountain, the Cheetah Outreach, Robben Island, Cape Point, a game farm and the aquarium. The Linz students also enjoyed watching our MTBS opening and wanted to stay at the event for longer, as they don’t have an equivalent of it over there.

They especially loved seeing the beauty of our landmarks and animals, tasting our national food and learning about our culture. We, as Stellies, had the chance to go on some of the excursions with them and experience places we wouldn’t usually visit.

During those few days, we became a small family and the Linz students’ departure was a bittersweet moment.

We are busy with the final arrangements to visit our new Austrian friends on our exchange during the June holidays.

Gr. 11-Taalstrukture-kompetisie

Woza, Albert!“Woza! Albert” is a journey that the Matric Drama class of 2019 embarked on, on the 27th of February.

They went in blind, having no previous knowledge of what the play entailed. Not only did they leave with goosebumps and an eagerness to discuss the play with one another, they left with a heavy feeling of realisation. The two actors had done something they had never seen before. They took a part of our grim history and added a comedic twist while still maintaining character, concentration, energy and awareness of their surroundings and of one another.

The matrics left not only learning more about Apartheid, but also with how one can create an entire play with only two actors and a few ambiguous props.”

The night was a success and a foreshadowing of what is to come. They are a grade which shows excitement for everything they get to take part in, and they are constantly making the school proud!

We would like to wish all the grade 8’s the best of luck with their first high school exam. Hou so aan en onthou: hand in hand our fire will expand.

The fun activities included musical chairs, a lip sync battle, debating, karaoke and hand tennis. The eco committee organized a litter run around the school to pick up trash, and the community service committee organized to make 100 hotdogs which they donated to a local charity organization, Shiloh.

The LAN evening, which is an event hosted by the SRC members once a year where gamers game throughout the evening, took place on 1 March in the activity centre.

It was enjoyed by all attendees who played PC /Xbox games, watching series or watching YouTube videos. It was an evening of interaction where attendees not only had access to open WiFi, but were also treated to pizza.

Gaming has become very popular among our learners and we look forward to a growing activity.

HOckeyKwagga tour

u/14 Girls

Starting off the hockey pre-season on a high note, the u/14A girls held the Stellies name high at the Kwagga Tour, from 21 - 23 March.

With the normal challenges of getting used to your team mates, alternating between playing positions and therefore stretching your abilities with the added leap into high school, the girls pushed through and won all their games on day one.

On day two the girls drew against York and lost their first game in the quarter finals against Girls High 1/0.

Thereafter, each game was played and won with great enthusiasm, starting with a 7/0 win against Outeniqua B straight after the quarter finals and in the play offs winning against the 1st team of Outeniqua Primary and achieving 5th place in the Tournament out of 10 schools. The team grew stronger as a whole and indivually and, being a parent experiencing such great team spirit on and off the field, made it exciting for the season ahead.

u/14 Boys

We could write and only tell you about the highlight and that simply being that we brought home Gold, but that in itself would not tell the full story. Truth be told, the success of winning the tournament was only a result of numerous other small victories.

The coming together of the team and the clear understanding of the coach’s game plan can also be described as a great victory. The early mornings and the late afternoons caused the team to dig deep and give more than they thought they could give. In the midst of tight competition, the boys learned to trust one another and that will serve to be a platform for future successes.

Another great victory was the togetherness of the parents as they raised their voices alongside the hockey field to encourage their boys across the line. We can honestly say that we went as individuals, but came back as a team.

u/16 Girls

A tour isn’t purely defined by the results on the pitch. If anything, the fairly newly- composed u/16A Girls team tour had a lot more to do with happenings “off rather than on” the astro. They had barely arrived in Sandbaai before being whisked away for the first session of the highly confidential team building that Coach Paulene and team manager Carin had set up for them.

This was a tour about co-existing, working together and for one another. A highly supportive parent group took care of a lot of work behind the scenes, to allow the team and management space to focus.

Our first match was against Punt. The girls looked lethargic and unfocused in the first half, only managing to net two goals, a far cry from what we were expecting. Coach Paulene was extremely animated as she read them the riot act at half time. We don’t know what she said, but it reignited a sting in the tail - the girls came out with all guns blazing; scoring a further 8 goals.

The afternoon saw them play their second match. A resounding 7-0 victory against Glenwood. There were many positives but also signs that a lot of work was needed if they were to live up to the previous season’s u/16 team.

The victory against Glenwood set up a final versus annual rivals, Outeniqua High, from George. Unlike the previous matches, the girls had to dig deep against a highly motivated, fast and skilled Kwagga team. The final 3-1 scoreline was not a true reflection of the game.

It was a closely contested affair with the Kwaggas coming hard at us in the last quarter. Character, dogged defence and determination saw us over the finish line, leaving us as Tournament Champions and setting up a potential humdinger in the annual Kwagga vs Stellies festival in April..

In closing, the tour bridged gaps between the girls, drew the parents closer as a supportive body and allowed Paulene and Carin to create a team environment and solid foundation on which to plan and build for the remainder of the season.

u/16 Boys

U/16A Boys toured to Hermanus at the end of March, over the long weekend. The boys enjoyed the tour and there was a lot of time for team-building. They played very well, winning their first encounter 5 -0 against Hoërskool Punt. Their second game was a very fast, tough game against Curro Durbanville and they drew 4 – 4. Unfortunately, Curro scored more goals against Punt and our boys ended up in 3rd and 4th playoffs which they won against Hermanus by 3 – 1, ending 3rd overall.

29.03.19 @ 11:34 vs Hermanus A 3-1, William, Dean, Jared

Premier Girls

The 20th of March marked the start of the 2019 Belgotex Fairmont Easter Festival Hockey Tournament. With six “freshies” joining the team, this pre-season tournament provided our Premier Girls with a great opportunity to compete and hone their skills as a team before the official start of the league. This team is proudly led by Miré De Jongh (C) and Chelsea Tomlinson (VC).

The tournament consisted of 4 pools with our Premier girls participating in Pool A which included teams from Parel Vallei, Trinity House, Curro Durbanville, HTS Drostdy and Glenwood House. Each school played a total of 7 matches.

A super-focused, highly-motivated team donned their hockey gear on day 1, plaited their hair, put their game faces on and brought home 2 fantastic wins. Our girls were off to a great start, ending the day with a total of 16 goals.

They kept the momentum going on day 2 with convincing victories against Glenwood House and Curro Durbanville. Day 3 saw DF Malan go down, followed by what was to become the most important game thus far.

The top team in each of the 4 pools automatically advances to the semi-finals. We had to secure a win over Parel Vallei to ensure that we go through as the outright leaders of our pool. Unfortunately, the final whistle went with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

Despite ending in a joint first position with Parel Vallei, with 13 points each and scoring 30 goals, Parel Vallei ended in the top position with fewer goals scored against them and they advanced as the winners of Pool A.

On the final day of the tournament, our Premier Team faced off in an epic nail biter battle against Fairmont’s 1st team. This was 100% THE GAME of the tournament. Within the first 10 minutes we were trailing 3-0. Our team clawed their way back into the game, closed the gap to 3-3 and then the goals started flooding in with a final score of 6-5 for Stellenberg.

Here’s what the crowd DID NOT KNOW… at the same time that the match started, a plane left Cape Town International Airport with 9 of our premier players who were off on a tour to Holland, putting this win in a whole new category. A huge shout-out has to go to Caylin, Kyra, Cara-Mia, Mari, Nabeelah and Jemma. They were thrown in at the deep-end but were absolute super stars.

Ultimately, Outeniqua boys and Hudson Park Girls were crowned as the 2019 winners of the tournament. Our Premier Girls attained the 5th position in the tournament.

We would like to congratulate our premier coach, Paulene De Bruin and our Team Manager, Mrs Santjie Harris for the superb performance and taking care of our players during the tournament. Also a huge thank you to Sean Thompson and Andrew Swarts (our unofficial official team photographers) as well as a massive shout-out to our supporters and all our parents for their support and UBER services.

Premier Boys

During the holidays, the Prem Boys Hockey team toured to Knysna for the Oakhill Festival that took place from 28 to 31 March.

They won all 5 their matches, conceding only one goal. The last match was the cherry on top - a very good win against the host, Oakhill.

A lot of players had the chance to score goals, but Skyla Fields was top scorer with a whopping 7 goals! Ethan van Wyk received the award for his team’s most valuable player of the tournament.

Thanks to coach Nicholas and Ms Koegelenberg, our team manager, for all their efforts (and patience).

U/16 Girls

The true test had arrived. A mini 25 minute per match “slugout “ with some of the the top Western and Eastern Cape Schools. To date our u/16A team has been unbeaten in all friendly matches and tournaments, but, it need be added, against weaker opposition. Many of the schools also used their u/16 first team players.

The Championship, run over 3 days, would pit us against schools, many, that are in our league this year. Friday kicked off with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Wynberg. Next was a 1-0 loss to Springfield albeit a somewhat contentious issue in which our girls deserved, at worst, a draw.

Saturday was to be a long day with varied results: a 3-0 win against Edgemead, 3-0 loss to eventual Championship winners DSG, 1-1 draw against Somerset College , 1-0 win against the Rustenburg Colts side and a 2-0 loss in the day’s last game against Herschell.
