підготовки до нашого 75-річчя, освячення нового

престолу в вівтарі є однією із цих проєктів.

Що таке канонічний престол?

ПАМ’ЯТЬ СВ. І ПРАВЕДНИХ ЙОСИФА

ОБРУЧНИКА, ДАВИДА ЦАРЯ І ЯКОВА, ПО ПЛОТІ

БРАТА ГОСПОДНЬОГО.

Святий Йосиф Обручник

походив з роду царя Давида.

Від першого шлюбу у нього

було чотири сина і дві

доньки. Овдовівши, святий

Йосиф жив у суворій

стриманості.

Вісімдесятирічним старцем

святий Йосиф був вибраний

первосвящениками, щоб він

оберігав дівство Пресвятої

Бо горо диці , як а дала

обітницю безшлюбності. Про

втілення через Неї Сина

Божого йому сповістив

Ангел. Святий Йосиф був присутній під час поклоніння

пастирів і волхвів Новонародженому Богомладенцю. За

вказівкою Ангела він втік з Матір’ю Божою і Богомладенцем

Ісусом до Єгипту, рятуючи Їх від гніву царя Ірода. В Єгипті він

жив з Дівою Марією і Богомладенцем, заробляючи Їм на життя

працею тесляра. Помер святий Йосиф у віці близько ста років.

Святий цар і пророк Давид був праотцем по плоті Господа

нашого Ісуса Христа. Молодший син Ієсея, в юності Давид пас

стада овець, які належали його батькові. Він відрізнявся

глибокою вірою, ревно виконував волю Божу. Тому під час

нашестя филистимлян він з Божою допомогою здолав у бою

велетня Голіафа. Ця перемога вирішила результат війни на

користь ізраїльського народу.

Після загибелі Саула і його сина Давид був проголошений

царем південної частини ізраїльської держави, а після вбивства

другого сина Саула – царем всього Ізраїлю. Він влаштував нову

столицю – Єрусалим («Місто

миру»), а в ньому – нову

с к и н і ю . Й о г о в е л и к и м

бажанням було – побудувати

замість скинії храм. Але йому

було сказано від Бога, що храм

побудує його син.

Життя пророка Давида було

затьмарене великим падінням:

він взяв собі дружину Урія, а

самого його послав у битву на

смерть. Але він же дав і

приклад великого покаяння,

покірливо, з вірою несучи

скорботу, послану в покарання

за скоєний гріх. Зразок

покаяння святий Давид дав в

50-му псалмі. Помер цар Давид в глибокій старості з

непохитною вірою в пришестя у світ обіцяного Богом Спасителя

– Месії, Господа нашого Ісуса Христа.

Апостол Яків, брат Господній –

син праведного Йосифа

Обручника. З дитячих років

Яків був назореєм, тобто

людиною, присвяченою Богу.

Назореї давали обітницю

д о т р и м а н н я д і в с т в а ,

утримуватися від вина, не

споживати м'ясної їжі, не

с т р и г т и в о л о с с я. К о л и

С п а с и т е л ь п о ч а в

проповідувати, святий Яків

увірував в Христа і став Його

апостолом. За богоугодне

життя він був вибраний першим єпископом Єрусалимської

Церкви. Святий Яків головував на Апостольському Соборі в

Єрусалимі (Діян. 15). За тридцять років єпископства апостол

навернув багатьох юдеїв в християнство. Незадоволені цим

книжники і фарисеї вирішили убити святого Якова. Відвівши

святителя на дах храму, вони наказали, щоб він відрікся від

Спасителя світу. Але не отримавши зречення юдейські вчителі

зіштовхнули його вниз. Святий помер не відразу, а, зібравши

останні сили, молився Господу за своїх ворогів, які в цей час

добивали його камінням. Мученицька кончина святителя Якова

відбулася близько 63 року.

Святий апостол Яків склав Божественну літургію, яка лягла в

основу літургій, складених святителями Василієм Великим та

Іоаном Златоустом. Церква зберегла Послання апостола, яке

увійшло до складу книг Священного Писання Нового Завіту.

Тропар, голос 2:

Благовіствуй, Йосифе, про чудеса Давидові Богоотцеві, бо ти

бачив Діву, що родила, і з пастухами славословив єси, з

волхвами поклонився ти, від Ангела вістку прийнявши. Моли

Христа Бога спасти душі наші

ОБРІЗАННЯ (НАЙМЕНУВАННЯ) ГОСПОДНЄ.

СВЯТИТЕЛЯ ВАСИЛІЯ ВЕЛИКОГО

- 14 січня -

Найближчою важливою подією із

життя Ісуса Христа, що наступає

після празника Христового Різдва,

є Господнє Обрізання і

надання імені. Цей празник ми

святкуємо 14 с ічня. Святе

Євангеліє про це так говорить: "Як

спов­нились вісім днів, коли мали

обрізати хлоп’ятко, назвали Його

Ісус — ім’я, що надав був ангел,

перше, ніж Він почався у лоні" (Лк.

2, 21). Ісус Христос, як Бог і

Законодавець, не був зобов’я­

заний неодмінно виконувати

релігійно -обрядові приписи

Мойсеєвого закону для ізраїльського народу. Та все-таки Він,

плоттю Своєю походячи і належачи до нього, їм добровільно

підкорився і їх зберігав. З тієї причини Він восьмого дня після

народження піддався обряду обрізання.

Старозавітнє обрізання було своєрідним прообразом

новозавітнього хре­щення, що втілює нас у Христа. Святий

апостол Павло, називаючи хрещення й навернення до

правдивої й спасаючої євангельської віри "нерукотворним

обрізанням", каже до таких віруючих Нового Завіту: "У Ньому

ви були й обрізані обрізанням нерукотворним, коли ви з себе

скинули це смертне тіло обрізанням Христовим. Поховані з

Ним у хрещенні, з Ним ви разом також воскресли" (Кол. 2, 11-

12).

Або, іншими словами, головна суть цього "нерукотворного

обрізання" (людського серця) полягає в тому, що "ось

настають дні, - говорить Господь, - коли Я укладу з домом

Ізраїля і з домом Іуди новий завіт...". Й "у той день назвуть

Єрусалим престолом Господа; і всі народи заради імені

Господа зберуться в Єрусалим і не будуть більше чинити

[переступів і провин] за впертістю [колишнього] злого серця

свого". Бо Я "вкладу закон Мій у нутрощі їх і на серцях їхніх

напишу його, і буду їм Богом, а вони будуть Моїм народом. І

вже не будуть учити один одного, брат брата і говорити:

"пізнайте Господа", бо усі самі будуть знати Мене, від малого

до великого, - говорить Господь, - тому що Я прощу

беззаконня їхні і гріхів їхніх уже не пом'яну більше" (Єр. 3, 17;

31, 31,33-34).

Тобто "і дам їм серце єдине, і дух новий вкладу в них, і візьму з

тіла їх серце кам'яне, і дам їм серце плотське" (Єз. 11, 19). Й

унаслідок такої Господньої "трансплантації" і твориться "новий

Ізраїль" - правдива спільнота новозавітнього Божого люду

("свідків" Христових), починаючи від рідної хати й місця

проживання "та аж до краю землі" (Діян. 1, 8). Себто, Тіло

Христове, складене з дійсно духовно "народжених звище" (Ін. 3,

3,7) представників численних і різних націй і рас, мов, наріч і

діалектів, культур, етносів та племен, а також еклезіально-

теологічних традицій і деномінацій східного і західного

походження: "Ви - наше послання, написане у серцях наших,

яке пізнають і читають усі люди; ви показуєте собою, що ви

- послання Христове, через служіння наше, написане не

чорнилом, але Духом Бога Живого, не на кам'яних скрижалях,

але на плотських скрижалях серця" (2 Кор. 3, 2-3).

І як наголошував Сам Ісус, таке служіння "проповідування

Євангелія всьому творінню" цих - істинних і активних, з

"обрізаним" серцем, "віруючих супроводжуватимуть такі

знамення: іменем Моїм виганятимуть бісів; говоритимуть

новими мовами, братимуть змій; і якщо смертоносне щось

вип'ють, не пошкодить їм [тобто будуть під потужним

Божим захистом і покровом]; покладуть руки на недужих, і

вони будуть здорові" (Мк. 16, 15,17,18). Крім того, в їх

середовищі - під благодатною дією Святого Духа - "і будуть

пророкувати сини ваші і дочки ваші; старцям вашим будуть

снитися сни, і юнаки ваші будуть бачити видіння" (Іоїл 2, 28).

І цей пророчий Дух Бога Живого ясно дає зрозуміти Своєму

Тілу Христовому, що наразі ми, судячи з усього, проживаємо

якраз "в останні роки" і "в останні дні" (Єз. 38,

8,16) всесвітньої Історії спасіння. Коли масштабно демонічна

"ось, темрява землю вкриває, а морок - народи" (Іс. 60, 2). Тим

паче, "бо зійшов диявол до вас, у великій люті, знаючи, що

небагато йому залишилося часу" (Одкр. 12, 12). А тому, дуже

схоже, вже невпинно наближається до свого логічного

завершення та - спасаюча й відроджуюча до нового життя і

зцілююча (духовно й фізично) всіх людей благословенна місія,

коли народом Божим "і буде проповідуване це Євангеліє

Царства по всьому світу, на свідчення всім народам; і тоді

прийде кінець!" (Мт. 24, 14).

Й саме тоді, коли вже вдруге на Святу Землю, в Єрусалим, і

прийде Син Божий, то неминуче "настане [Його судний] день

Господній, великий і страшний. І буде: всякий, хто [вчасно й у

щирому покаянні і смиренні] прикличе ім'я Господнє [Ісуса

Христа], спасеться". Й саме в Церкві Божій і "буде спасіння,

як сказав Господь" (Іоїл 2, 31-32). Й, при цьому, як пообіцяв Він

Сам, "а ось на кого Я [милостиво] спогляну: на смиренного й

скрушеного духом [тобто з покаянно-"обрізаним" серцем] і на

того, хто [благоговіє і] тріпоче перед словом Моїм" (Іс. 66, 2).

Й у тому часі до Божого "спасіння" остаточно "ввійде повна

кількість язичників", разом з якими неодмінно й "увесь Ізраїль

спасеться" (Рим. 11, 11,25,26).

Празник Обрізання, хоча вважається великим, однак не

належить до 12 великих дванадесятих празників. Він не має ані

перед- ані попразденства і, властиво, закінчує попразденство

Христового Різд­ва. Канон утрені празника уклав святий Степан

Саваїт (VII ст.).

СВЯТИТЕЛЬ ВАСИЛІЙ ВЕЛИКИЙ народився близько 330 року в

місті Кесарії в благочестивій християнській сім'ї Василія та

Емілії. Батько святителя був адвокатом і викладачем риторики.

Початкову освіту Василій отримав під керівництвом своїх

батьків і бабусі Макріни, високоосвіченої християнки. Після

смерті батька й бабусі Василій вирушив для подальшої освіти в

Константинополь, а потім до Афін, де досконало вивчив

різноманітні науки - риторику і філософію, астрономію і

математику, фізику і медицину. Приблизно в 357 році Василій

повернувся до Кесарії, де деякий час викладав риторику. В

Антіохії в 362 році він був присвячений в сан диякона

єпископом Мелетієм, а в 364 році присвячений в сан пресвітера

єпископом Кесарійським Євсевієм.

Виконуючи своє служіння, святитель Василій ревно

проповідував і невпинно дбав про потреби своєї пастви, завдяки

чому здобув високу повагу і велику любов.

Незабаром (370 рік) святитель Василій був обраний Собором

єпископів на Кесарійську кафедру. У тяжкий для Церкви час він

проявив себе як палкий захисник правдивої віри, захищаючи її

від єресей та перекручень своїми словами і посланнями.

Особливо слід відзначити три його книжки проти аріанського

псевдовчителя Евномія, в яких святитель Василій Великий вчив

про Божество Святого Духа і єдність Його природи з Отцем і

Сином.

За своє коротке життя святитель Василій залишив нащадкам

безліч богословських праць: дев'ять бесід на Шестиднів, 16 бесід

на різні псалми, п'ять книжок на захист правдивого вчення про

Святу Трійцю, 24 бесіди на різні богословські теми, сім

аскетичних трактатів; правила чернечі; статут подвижницький;

дві книги про Хрещення; книгу про Святого Духа, кілька

проповідей та 366 листів різним особам.

Святитель Василій Великий, поряд із святителем Миколаєм

Чудотворцем, здавна користувався особливим шануванням у

віруючих християн - як східної, так і західної традицій. Частка

мощей святителя Василя і понині перебуває в Почаївській

Лаврі. Чесна глава святителя Василія благоговійно зберігається

в Лаврі святого Афанасія на Афоні, а правиця його - у вівтарі

храму Воскресіння Христового в Єрусалимі.

За заступництвом визначного богослова і навчителя Христової

Церкви - святителя Василія Великого просімо й молімо

всемогутнього й премудрого Триєдиного Бога, щоби Він щедро

поблагословив Свій новозавітній народ Божий Сходу і Заходу

палким бажанням і прагненням послідовно дотримуватися всіх

правд та вчень Господньої і апостольської науки.

Як це було, наприклад, у часи ранньої Церкви, коли Христові

учні, "проходячи ж по містах, вони передавали вірним

дотримуватися постанов, схвалених апостолами і

пресвітерами в Єрусалимі. І церкви утверджувалися вірою і

повсякденно зростали кількісно". Й такому успішному

поширенню спасенної Христової віри, крім того, чимало

сприяла, зокрема, й та обставина, що "до [християнської

спільноти] Єрусалима сходилося безліч людей з довколишніх

міст, які приносили хворих та одержимих нечистими духами,

і вони всі зцілялися" (Діян. 16, 5; 5, 16). Амінь.

Тропар Обрізання, голос 1:

На престолі вогнеподібному, Ти сидиш у вишніх з Отцем

Безначальним і Божественним Твоїм Духом. Ти благозволив

народитися на землі від Д івиці, що не знала мужа, Матері

Твоєї, Ісусе. Тому і о брізаний був Ти, як людина восьмиденна.

Слава всеблагому Твоєму зволенню, слава провидінню Твоєму,

слава низходженню Твоєму, Єдиний Чоловіколюбче.

Тропар Святителю Василію Великому, голос 1:

Розійшлося віщування твоє по всій землі, що прийняла слово

твоє, яким достойно навчив єси. Природу створіння єства

з’ясував єси, звичаї людські прикрасив єси. Царське

священство, преподобний отче Василію, моли Христа Бога, щоб

спастися душам нашим.

WE’RE CONSECRATING A NEW ALTAR

TABLE AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

As part of the many projects St. George’s has

undertaken in preparation for its 75th anniversary,

consecrating a new Altar Table is one of them.

What’s a canonical Altar?

One made without the use of nails,

which contains the sacred relics of

Martyred saints. Also conforming

to an ancient and sacred order of

blessing, sanctifying it for use in

God’s house.

The altar table is then

adorned in a number of

ways, with precious fabric, a

metal covering, or in the

case at St. George’s with a

carved covering of gilded

wood keeping with the

baroque style present in our

temple. It will be carved by

artisans in Ukraine. It will

also contain 4 large carved

icons.

SUNDAY AFTER THE NATIVITY – THE HOLY,

RIGHTEOUS ONES: JOSEPH THE BETROTHED,

DAVID THE KING AND JAMES THE BROTHER OF

THE LORD

The three saints we are

commemorating today are all

related to our Lord. We will first

look at King David on his own

and then consider an issue

linking St. Joseph and Saint

James.

King David was a forefather of

Jesus Christ. He was the son of

Jesse and he was a shepherd.

During a war between the

Israelites and the Philistines he

killed the giant Goliath, which

turned the tide of battle in favor

of the Israelites. As a result

he became the favorite of King

Saul. However, David was so popular that Saul became jealous and

tried to have David killed. David fled and did not kill the king when

he had the chance. Later on, after Saul and his sons died in battle,

David became king. He built a new capital, Jerusalem. David is

traditionally believed to be the author of the Book of Psalms, the

song book of the church and in every service we use psalms or part

of psalms. One can, and should, pray from the psalter on one’s own.

One can find the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament or one can

obtain it in a separate volume.

One of the most famous psalms is Psalm 50/51 (50 in Greek,

Slavonic and Latin, 51 in most English bibles). It was written for the

following reason. David caught a glimpse of a woman, Bathsheba,

bathing. He began to lust for her and committed adultery with

Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah, put in front of the battle

line so he would be killed, making David guilty of murder, too. Later

on, David was accused of this crime by the prophet Nathan and he

repented. As a result he wrote Psalm 50/51, a psalm of repentance.

When we have committed a sin it is appropriate to pray this

psalm asking for God’s forgiveness.

On this day we also commemorate

St. Joseph, the adoptive father of

Jesus and Jesus’ brother, St.

James. St. Joseph was a widower,

an older man, who married

the Mother of God to be her

guardian. He was a carpenter and

God, through the medium of an

angel, told him who Jesus was and

to save him and the Virgin Mary

by fleeing to Egypt to escape King

Herod’s soldiers who were seeking

to kill the Christ child. Joseph was

also told to return to the Holy

Land when Herod was dead. He

died when Christ was rather young

so we don’t see him much in the Gospel after the stories of the birth

of The holy apostle James was Jesus Christ’s “brother” (we will see

what this means later on). After Christ’s Ascension St. James

became the first bishop of Jerusalem. He often went to pray in the

temple in Jerusalem but when he started teaching that Jesus Christ

was the son of God he was killed by being thrown off the room of the

temple.

We, as Orthodox, believe that the Mother of God is the Ever-Virgin

Mary. That is, we believe that Mary was a virgin before, during and

after giving birth and this is the most ancient tradition of the

church. However, the Gospel makes mention of the “brothers” of

Jesus. Indeed, St. James, as mentioned above, is called the brother

of Jesus. So how do we reconcile this apparent contradiction? First

of all, in the Bible not every mention of brother refers to biological

brothers. Grandsons and

nephews are sometimes called

brothers. Even people who are

good friends and companions

can be referred to as brothers.

Also, in the Gospel the brother

of Jesus are never called sons

of Mary, as Jesus is. The

contradiction is eliminated

when we look at the

Protoevangelion of James, a

mid-second century book

containing early tradition about

the Virgin Mary. It tells us that

St. Joseph was a widower, with

children from his first marriage.

He was a pious, elderly man

and was chosen to marry the

Virgin Mary as her protector

and guardian rather than a husband in the usual sense of the tem.

What this shows is that the apparent contradiction in the Gospels

can often be explained by the teaching of the church as transmitted

by the Church Fathers. As Orthodox, we never read the Bible

in isolation from the church.

What the example of the saints we commemorate today show is that

reading the Bible helps us to understand the things we hear and see

in the churchy and the tradition of the church, including the writing

of the Fathers, the Liturgy of the church and even its iconography

help us to understand the Bible.

THE CIRCUMCISION OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR

JESUS CHRIST

Every male of you shall be

circumcised. And you shall be

circumcised in the flesh of your

foreskin, and it shall be a sign of

the covenant between Me and

you. A child who is eight days old

among you shall be circumcised

… and my covenant shall be in

your flesh as an everlasting

covenant (Genesis, 17:10-13).

When our forefather in faith

Abraham was ninety-nine years

of age, the eternal Son and Word

of God came to him and made

covenant with him. He

commanded that, as the defining

“sign” of that covenant, Abraham and his seed be circumcised.

Throughout succeeding centuries, Israel dutifully kept this Law and

even took it as a cause for boasting (Galatians 6:14).1

It was to fulfill this divine commandment that our Lord, God and

Savior Jesus Christ was circumcised on the eighth day after His

birth according to the flesh from His pure and ever-virgin Mother

Mary. This event receives but passing notice in the Gospel:

And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was

called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in

the womb (Luke 2:21).

Yet, laden with great significance, Christ’s circumcision proved to be

both the fulfillment of God’s commandment in the Law and a

prophetic sign of future events.

The Savior’s circumcision was the occasion of the first shedding of

His precious blood. The Cross overshadowed the Lord Jesus even

while He lay in a crib by swaddling bands bound. The knife which

cut the Lord’s flesh on that day foreshadowed the centurion’s spear

which would pierce His side, releasing the saving torrent, the blood

and water (John 19:34). That torrent drowned the Law’s type and

shadow and gave birth to the font. Circumcision prefigured the

saving stream of holy baptism through which we Christians enter

the new and eternal covenant of salvation as St. Paul proclaimed:

In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without

hands, by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ;

and you were buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also

raised with Him through faith in the working of God who raised him

from the dead (Colossians 2:11-12)

In circumcision a blade

wielded by the hand of man

cut away flesh; in baptism

the blade of the Holy Spirit

cuts away sin. The Spirit-

blade cuts deep, rooting out

the sin of our forefather. In

the blood of Christ’s Passion

sin is drowned together with

death’s might and Hades

(Hosea 13:14; I Corinthians

15:55). Through the water from His side a fertile seed of immortal

life and incorruptibility is firmly planted in the soul and flesh of

each one who issues from the font. The metal blade of circumcision

marked the flesh of Jewish males; the Spirit-blade of baptism marks

the soul and body of each and every Christian with the “Seal of the

gift of the Holy Spirit.” Before this new and mighty “sign,” the

cherubim with fiery sword who guard lost Paradise, which of old

was in Eden (Genesis 3:25), give way that the children of the new

Covenant may, like the Good Thief (Luke 23:43), pass within to rest

until the final consummation of God’s eternal plan.

Of old God in the Law commanded Israel: “circumcise your

hardheartedness, and be stiff-necked no longer” (Deuteronomy

10:16).

Now we who have undergone the very real surgery of baptism, must

circumcise our hearts as well. St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria

(+444), says that we, the faithful, who have been established in

grace through holy baptism, must cut away and mortify the

tumultuous risings of carnal pleasures and passions by the sharp

surgery of faith and by ascetic labors; not cutting the body, but

purifying the heart, and being circumcised in the Spirit, and not in

the letter [according to the letter of Mosaic Law]; whose praise, as

the divine Paul testifies (Romans 2:29), needs not the sentence of

any human tribunal, but depends upon the decree from above.”2

Thus we learn the significance of Christ the Savior’s eighth-day

circumcision, that

“Name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9) was given:

1.His fulfillment of the Mosaic law;

2.the foreshadowing of His saving Passion and of our participation

therein through holy baptism;

3.the taking up of the cross and (Luke 9:23), the daily circumcision

of our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit through ascetic effort.

The all-good God was not ashamed to be circumcised with

the circumcision of the flesh, but provided Himself as an

example and pattern for all, for their salvation; for the

Creator of the Law fulfilled the prescriptions of the Law

and the predictions of the Prophets concerning Himself. O

Lord, who holdest all things in the palm of Thy hand and

was wrapped in swaddling-clothes, glory to Thee (from

aposticha of the feast).

WE ARE COMING TO CONFESSION NOT TO BE

JUDGED AND CONDEMNED

When we come to Confession we come to meet a friend face to face.

We are not coming to be judged and condemned. We do not come in

terror of what will happen. We come to the One who, being God, be-

yond suffering, beyond death, has chosen, for the love of us, to be-

come Man, to take upon Himself all our human destiny and to give

His life for us. His life, His death are to us evidence that we are so

loved of God that we can come up to Him whether we are good or

bad with hope that He will receive us with open arms; that if anyone

is to cry over our unworthiness and our sins it is Him, for compas-

sion, for pity, for love — with a readiness, as He said in a vision to

one of the saints, that if there was only one sinner in the world He

would again become Man and again die for him, because He cannot

endure the thought of anyone perishing.

This is the God, the Christ, to Whom we come when we come to

Confession — to the One who is open to us with all His life and

death; One who waits for us to come to be healed, to be consoled, to

be supported — not to be condemned, not to be judged.

And then, what is the role of the priest? In the prayer which is read

before Confession we are told, ‘I am but a witness’. What does it

mean? A witness to what? To the fact that you have come? That

would not be enough. But if you think of what witnesses are: there

are accidental, occasional witnesses. You are present in the street

when an accident takes place. You are asked: what did happen? You

are neither in favour of the ones or the others. You are just telling

what your eyes have seen. It’s for others to judge and to know.

There are other forms of witness. At times a friend of ours is brought

to judgement. And we come to defend him, to testify for him, to save

him. That’s another kind of witness.

And then there is the witness which the Holy Gospel mentions

speaking of St. John the Baptist: as the friend of the Bridegroom, the

one who comes to the wedding, invited both by the bride and the

bridegroom, because he is the nearest, the closest, to them both.

And he is there to share their joy, the miracle of their encounter, the

miracle of a blessing that will come upon them and out of two make

one, unite them so that they are inseparable for ever in the mystery

of eternal love, of divine love shared with them.

This is the position of the priest. He is called by Christ to be before

the person, the sinner, a witness to the fact that he the sinner is

loved, that Christ is there, that He has no other desire or intention

but the salvation and the joy eternal of the one who has come today.

And he comes also in the name of the sinner saying: Christ, my God,

our Lord, this person has sinned, yes, but look, he trusts in You, he

believes in You, we all love him with the same love as You possess.

We are prepared to give our lives for him to be reconciled and find

peace and joy and be at one with You, our Lord, our God, our Sav-

iour, our Lover.

When you come to Confession next time, think of these things.

Think of the way you come: not with fear of punishment or of rejec-

tion but with open heart to pour out everything evil or doubtful

there is in this heart. And Christ will receive you. Your confession

may be to Him a new crucifixion but He accepts it. He doesn’t reject

it. He does not reject you. Come, open your heart, speak in all truth

to Him, knowing that you are loved beyond judgement, to the point

of sacrifice and death: His death, and your life — life in time and life

eternal.

ON SPIRITUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

One day, while St. Antony was sitting with a certain Abba, a virgin

came up and said to the Elder: 'Abba, I fast six days of the week and

I repeat by heart portions of the Old and New Testament daily.' To

which the Elder replied: 'Does poverty mean the same to you as

abundance?' 'No', she answered. 'Or dishonor the same as praise?'

'No, Abba.' 'Are your enemies the same for you as your friends?'

'No', she replied. At that the wise Elder said to her: 'Go, get to work,

you have accomplished nothing.'

For next to God, we worship and love the Word who is from the

unbegotten and ineffable God, since also He became man for our

sakes, that becoming a partaker of our sufferings, He might also

bring us healing. For all the writers were able to see realities darkly

through the sowing of the implanted word that was in them. For the

seed and imitation impacted according to capacity is one thing, and

PARADOXICAL HEALING AND THE INCARNATION OF

CHRIST

Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain

Briefly, I must say that in the mys-

tery of the divine economy, the

mind learns that the privations of

Christ become our habits, as St.

Maximos said. That is to say, the

Incarnation of the Logos became

our means of union with God. His

kenosis or self-emptying became

our fulfillment; His condescension

our exaltation; His passion our dis-

passion; His death our life. Learn-

ing and understanding this the

mind rejoices and is glad. In fact, in

the mystery of divine economy the

mind discovers a marvelous and paradoxical science of healing. The

mind realizes that in divine economy we do not overcome our oppo-

nents with the opposite forces, as the care of the physicians and the

physicists prescribe, but rather our illnesses are healed by similar

illnesses. The mind discerns that through the poverty of God the Lo-

gos our own poverty was healed; through His death our death, and

through His suffering our own suffering was healed.

A MEDITATION: YEAR OF THE LORD, VOLUME 2

During the Christmas season God's love

and His message of new hope comes to

us through the beauty and peace of the

incarnate Christ. Yet the Good News of

God's love may be entirely missed, and

Christmas may be an unfulfilled dream,

amidst the hectic bustle of cleaning,

shopping, writing, calling, decorating,

banking and visiting. The basic reason

for an unfulfilled Christmas is that we

focus on ourselves, how to please each

other, how to feel good and how to se-

cure happiness with all the things we

regard necessary. Yet only Christ can

give us a true Christmas. Only His presence in our hearts can bring

happiness, peace, joy, warmth and security. Cling to Christ ever

more closely during the Christmas season. Take time to pray and to

establish your spiritual and practical priorities. Let Christ come with

you from home to school, from kitchen to shopping center, from

Church to business office.

O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

After the prayer, we read the Gospel passage (according to the reading plan). Then we meditate upon the Word of God and what it speaks to me.
