TORAH MATTERS:

PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Jesse Shore WHAT A RABBI CANNOT TEACHWHAT A RABBI CANNOT TEACHWHAT A RABBI CANNOT TEACHWHAT A RABBI CANNOT TEACH Rabbis may at times be seen as a receptacle in which we place our hopes for change, as advocates for our spiritual welfare, and as icons to be placed aloft and admired from afar. While there is at least some sense of “awe” in which these notions may be validated, thank God for Hannah. In our Haftorah this week, Hannah serves as an everlasting check against these expectations spoiling into a grotesque form of idolatry. Having reached a breaking point, Hannah breaks out of her routine of passivity and approaches God in prayer. This change is frightening; it is diMerent; it is also confusing. Even the High Priest presiding over services cannot understand what is going on. He initially arrives at a negative conclusion about Hannah’s actions. This is the first lesson that Hannah teaches for the posterity of the Jewish people. Throughout the year, we exist in a rhythm of rituals and habits. Hannah models for us how the courage to improve ourselves may be to risk breaking out of those routines. Moreover, she also approaches those same routines (like prayer) in a diMerent way and with a diMerent mindset. Even Eli, the High Priest and religious leader, is at a loss to understand this change until he approaches Hannah and they have an open conversation. The second lesson that Hannah teaches us is that positive change does not only require courage, but humility. Hannah responds to Eli’s suspicions not with indignance, but with understanding and an awareness of her own humanity. The exchange we will read between Eli and Hannah is brief, but crucial for positive self-transformation. In order to transform ourselves with teshuva, we need to first recognize where we’re coming from. No High Priest, and all the more so, no Rabbi, can teach you the way to self-transformation. We may be able to show you the outward mechanics and choreography of formal teshuva, but the teshuva must be done and experienced for yourself. We will also be taking our own risks trying to emulate Hannah’s courage and humility in order to experience our own teshuva. We learn that Hannah, a lowly “maid-servant” and the High Priest had an exchange that had diminished distractions like titles and agendas. We’re all in this together. Godspeed.
