meet some njdb members! Meet Aleena Kazmi, the LTG of Division 20! She’s one of the many smarty-pants on the board and is a senior at Parsippany High School. She’s in her school’s marching band and plays the flute. I got the pleasure of rooming with her during ICON and she’s hilarious and internet-obsessed like myself. She’s extremely smart and has packed her schedule with AP classes rather than spend her last year in high school relaxing.
Meet Jeff Maziarz, the LTG of Division 6! In the time that he’s been on the board he’s made an awesome transform and works so hard with his division! He’s a senior at Steinert High School, but don’t let his laid-back attitude fool you, he’s smart and brings great ideas to the table. He’s so funny and can always make anyone laugh! I’m glad to be part of the same zone as him!
Meet Becca Lordon, the LTG of Division 5! She’s the only person on the board that’s shorter than me and I will always tease her because of that. She’s a senior at Burlington Township High School with IT Nicole Lema. She’s on a champion swim team and is part of the Teen Pep team at her school. She’s always fashionable no matter where we are and we’re always caught making weird faces at each other in pictures.

Club/Officer of the month
For the second time, a club and officer of the month have been chosen! For September, the Officer of the Month is actually for two officers! The Co-Presidents of High Technology, Emma Clark and Mahima Shah! These girls have done a great job getting High Technology to the next level! They turned in early registration for Fall Rally for 59 Key Clubbers! Also, they got all of their officers to attend RTC’s this fall. These two work so hard and it is definitely showing in the tremendous progress that their club has made. They message me all the time with questions (which we LTGs love, trust me!). LTGs love when clubs want to better themselves by asking questions. It gives us a feeling of purpose! These girls are so nice too, I definitely feel like I’ve become friends with them, I love having them as presidents in my division. I know Mahima will do great in college wherever she goes and I hope Emma continues to move up in the Key Club hierarchy since she’ll be a senior next year! Congratulations girls!
The Club of the Month is my home club, the Marine Academy of Science and Technology! And no, there’s no favoritism here, MAST has been doing a super awesome job this month! They got a record number of members this year, around 180! That’s more than half of our school (we only have 294 students). They’re also sending around 80 people to Fall Rally, it’ll be weird not attending with this spirited club this year. They already have all their fundraisers and events set up until Key Leader. They’ve done a great job getting newsletters done for the club as well. They are continuing their reading program to preschool students during the week, sponsoring a Ugandan girl named Glory so she can get an education, the ELIMINATE Project, Amanda’s Healing Hearts, CROP Walk, Fall Rally, and Key Leader! I’m so proud of the officers and all that they have accomplished so far, I know that they will do an outstanding job for the rest of the year!

On October 3rd, MAST held their 2nd annual “ELIM”pics. Basically, it’s a spin off of the Olympics, and it profits go towards the ELIMINATE Project, hence the catchy name. People could form teams of 5/+ players and had to come up with a clever team name or nation. The events held were a soccer tournament, a dodgeball tournament, an ultimate frisbee tournament, a floor hockey tournament, and a biathlon.
The teams that entered were put into brackets. They had preliminary games, then the
winners moved onto semi-finals, then championship games in each sport. The biathlon scores were also factored into the overall results. There were winners in each sport then those results were taken and used as points to determine the overall results. The overall winner was team North Dakota, and team USA came in second. But what really matters was that over $800 was raised for the ELIMINATE Project! I am so proud of my home school! I had
so much fun and the amount of spirit was amazing. I couldn’t be more proud to come from MAST.

fall rally review Time to talk about one of the best Key Club events ever: Fall Rally! Fall Rally was held October 12th at Six Flags Great Adventure. Those of us on the NJDB had a board meeting on the 11th to prep for this fantastic event and stayed up all night reviewing the script. We woke up bright and early at 5am on Sunday, got our costumes on, and got to the park (I must say the Six Flags is pretty creepy when deserted). The buses started arriving at 8am with spirited Key Clubbers from around the state. We had bus greeters, Tools for Schools collectors, people that set up the arena, and registration committee members (like me!). Key Clubbers started gathering in the arena at 9am and the actual rally started at 9:30am. It began with a lovely introduction of all the lieutenant governors, the executive board, International Trustees Nicole Lema and Barry Seng, the Kiwanis Committee, and all the guests. So many topics were discussed at Fall Rally: the ELIMINATE Project, the advocacy focus, YOF, Key Leader, dues, and more! Circle-K NJ District Governor Dawn Kreder, NJ Kiwanis District Governor Nancy Hart-Esposito, and IT Barry Seng gave lovely speeches about the upcoming service year. The Keynote Speaker this year was Ruth Incitti, she has been in Kiwanis for 25 years and has many distinguished awards. Her husband is the immediate past president of the Kiwanis International Foundation, so Kiwanis is part of her life in every aspect. However, the most exciting part (at least in my opinion) was the 3,031 attendees! This is only the second year that Fall Rally has had over 3,000 attendees, so the district board is very proud of our accomplishment. But of course, there’s no way we could have done it without all of you! Thank you so much to everyone that attended!

Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 70,000 people worldwide have this disease. The life expectancy for someone diagnosed is somewhere in their 30s and 40s. However, through the work of the following charity, those diagnosed are being helped daily and the foundation has been able to work towards finding a cure. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in research for this disease. This non-profit’s mission is to develop new drugs to fight the disease, improve the quality of life for those with CF, and ultimately to find a cure.
How can my club help save lives from this terrible disease? This foundation is known for its many events such as Great Strides, Fishing Tournaments, Xtreme Hike and more! Search for a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation event in your area and get your club to help out or participate. You can also “can” at sporting events or create your own event to benefit the organization. Your club can also make a donation to the foundation through their website. To learn more please visit www.cff.org or contact your Lieutenant Governor.

On October 11th, the New Jersey District Board met up again for another board meeting. This meeting was shorter than the others due to it being about Fall Rally preparation. We were still able to discuss many topics though! International Trustee Barry Seng was present and it was so awesome getting to meet him! To the LTGs, meeting an IT is like meeting celebrity. You see them on stage, posted on the website, but you never think you’ll actually meet them. He greeted us with Pennsylvania pretzels and Hershey’s chocolate because he’s the best IT ever :) At the meeting, the special committees (RTCs, Fall Rally Registration, and Fall Rally Programs) gave their final reports to the board since it was the last day for them. I’m so happy I got to work on Fall Rally Registration because even though it was a bit tedious sorting 1,500 tickets; it was cool to be behind the scenes for the rally and getting to see all the progress that clubs were making up registration. We also had the formal installment of LTG of Divison 1 Angela Becker and LTG of Division 8 Pearl Polito! It was a great, cheery moment. We discussed the upcoming ELIMINATHONs, the Kiwanis Family Conference (in November), and Key Leader. We also spoke briefly about newsletters, rosters, and CMRFs. IT Barry Seng announced the goal that the international board set for the Trick-or-Treat for UNCIEF: $1.4 million, that’s three lives saved per KCI member. We also got to hear about the past Kiwanis District Convention from Governor Levisay and Kiwanis District Governor Nancy Hart-Esposito. After going out to eat at TGIF Fridays (which trust me, is a difficult task with over 30 people), we reconvened for the reading of the script. The script reading went on until about 11:30 because we wanted everything to be perfect for you Key Clubbers! Let’s just say that waking up at 5am the next day was not an easy task. But as always, I had a great time at the meeting and I’m excited for the November Board Meeting (Nov. 15th-16th)!
