FROM THE EDITOR

May has certainly been a month of contrasts and not simply with regards to the weather! Our great weekend at Victor Harbor was followed the next day by a trip to Adelaide. This was to get a pin put into Mary’s big toe, so to correct a long term issue. As well as the toe in, I asked the surgeon to adjust her track as well! That means that it’s light duties for her until the middle of June– and more duties for me, but I must not complain. It just goes to illustrate to us men how much work is taken for granted. Initially I thought that my program to get the Alvis project moving might stall, but I am managing to do several jobs on the body panels at home. For those looking to remove rust and paint, a Scotch Brite Clean & Strip disc , P/N 07460 is highly recommended.

The good news is that three months after the ignominy of two punctures on All British Day, our Bristol 409 is back on the road. Having need of yet another odd sized tyre, I decided that to get the wheels fitted with wider safety rims in order to fit a tubeless and wider profile tyre. Now the car has five newly painted and shod wheels, plus I got the electric window lift mechanisms renewed.

If all that was not enough to get fixed, the efforts of a mouse to perforate the Alvis hood lining has seen Shannons Insurance covering the repair cost, so that should, I hope be fixed in the next month. Pam Wilton came to the rescue as regards getting a match for the material and Shannons approved the quote from local craftsman, Danny at Trim Tech, Kadina. If the job is as good as the Bristol retrim, I’ll be more than pleased.

For those who actually read the newsletter, you’ll see that it’s a bit

thinner issue, due to a lack of event reports on one hand and my lack of time to compile articles of my own..

A good turnout of members for the first

of the two MAPS bbq rego days; this one

at Kulpara and the second one in June to

be at Wauraltee. The weather was chilly,

both inside and out, so perhaps the guys

manning the BBQ had chosen the right

job! Members anxious to get their subs

paid and log books endorsed starting

arriving just after 10AM and the business

side of things looked to have wound up at

about 1PM.

The club provided a good selection of

cooked meats, with the members

chipping in with salads and sweets. No

big hiccups on any log book processing

with Jenny Penhall on hand to record

new log books issued, Erica Andrews

taking the unpaid subs, leaving Mike

Osborne and Jim Davies the easy job of

just filling in the books.

A good number of members brought

along their old vehicles thus allowing

some of the not so often seen to be

admired.

Well done to Trevor and Lyn Clerke for

bringing up the BBQ trailer from Port

Vincent, Richard and Marg Bastian for

the meat and beverage supplies

organization and to Lindon and Dawn

Penney for arranging the excellent venue

at Kulpara Hall again. As well as the

business side, there was a good buzz of

social chatter, making it a day to meet up

with members that perhaps had not had

the chance to chat for a while.

Rego Day

Kulpara Rego Day was a reasonable day with 53 people present and I believe that there were 20 log book registrations done and memberships paid up. Always plenty of salads and sweets laid on, which is reassuring for the caterer!!

The BBQ meat also worked out really well. We had catered for 60.

Our Treasurer, Erica indicated that there’s still about 90 members to renew membership and their vehicles, so time to remind the next meeting and Wauraltee rego day will be busy.

The Kulpara Hall is a great facility. Well cared for, hosting a very vibrant playgroup for the surrounding community.

These Registration Days, I believe, are a very worthwhile excise, both from a members social occasion and, I guess, more importantly, it provides an opportunity for the widespread location of members to conveniently complete their renewals.

It also shows that we are not a ‘meeting/admin centric’ club and are prepared to be mobile.

ELANORA STANSBURY, SUNDAY 29TH APRIL

A relatively late addition to the MAPS members' events options, the Inaugural Elanora Field Day at Stansbury proved to be an all round success. Elanora's Linda Kennedy ordered good weather and it could not have been better- sunny, but not too hot for old cars!

We opted to take the Alvis, setting a steady pace to brunch at Pt Vincent and arriving at Stansbury about noon. There was a lot of activity with stalls and pens being set up. Before long, the vehicles from MAPS and the YPVVCMCC started to arrive and I had concerns that there would be sufficient parking space. With a bit of maneuvering, we fitted everyone in well.

A wide range of attractions to look at besides the vehicles- chooks. lambs, alpaca, a goat, pigs, a donkey and a pony formed a great display for all ages. Other activities were rides in with the pony and trap, delicious Devonshire teas and a sample of local museum items.

The residents and visitors loved the variety and one resident had a special treat; a ride in the cab of big grain truck! Ion the past, trips to aged care homes have been based on rides in the cars, but this event was something different and much more fun for everyone I reckon,

Twenty MAPS members with a dozen cars, a tractor and a motorcycle from a wide area attended along with other enthusiasts - and a good selection of dogs too!

We were able to catch up with a couple of former MAPS members- Ken Osterstock and Wayne Mundy, both now residing in the Elanora home. A most enjoyable afternoon out and thanks to the friendly staff and volunteers at Elanora for their help and the show bags.

HMVC’s BRITISH CLASSICS TOUR DAY, VICTOR HARBOR

This annual event has become a firm favourite on our calendar and our absenc-es have only been due to clash of events such as the Federation Tour, or illness. Clear on both accounts this year, I can think of few nicer to spend my birthday.

We headed off on Friday morning, opt-ing to take the Triumph as the weather looked to be rain forecast . It was a tight squeeze with Maisie in the back, but a suitcase on the rear boot rack gave suffi-cient capacity. We always take the back route via Gawler, Hahndorf and then via to Echunga and Willunga Hill. This al-lows us to fuel up at Lobethal bakery! With a couple of stops we arrived at our weekend accommodation about 2 PM having missed the rain. That allowed me to cure a b++++y rattle from the hard top which was annoying all three occupants on the journey

Saturday saw us visit Port Elliot market and catch up with a couple of HMVC members. An early start on Sunday morning, but still not as early as the will-ing band of HMVC volunteers on scene to set the day’s show up. Morning tea was laid on in the nearby hotel and a band of marshals lined the 240 vehicles up for the flag off on a short trip to Wait-pinga Beach where the surf looked im-pressive. Returning back to Victor Har-bor, we were all directed to various park-ing places and able to sit down and enjoy lunch.

There were a number of awards. I’m not sure on the entire honor role, so my apologies for any omissions or errors.

COVER STORY

Viewers of the recent royal web will have seen the arrival of various royalty arriving in a selection of Rolls Royce, Bentley and Daimler vehicles, shepherded by “packs” of Range Rovers.

The oldest vehicle was the RR Phantom 4, but without the royal crest on the photograph. I could not but notice that the car looks to have had modern light units put into the original Lucas headlamps. That lead me to look a little bit of the background of the car.

Rolls Royce has used model names such as Phantom, Spirit, Ghost, Wraith, Cloud etc. over the decades. A Phantom appeared first in 1925 and is still a model name today. Superseding six cylinder models in 1936, a V12 model was produced with a massive 7.3 litre all alloy engine. These were highly complex cars and after WW2, such cars were not seen as a rational part of the Rolls/ Bentley program, hence the much smaller engined Rolls and Bentley models.

The story goes, in 1948 the Duke of Edinburgh, a keen motorist, heard about a Bentley projects nicknamed “Scalded Cat” and asked if he might test it out. He enjoyed this experimental car immensely and drove it for considerable distances. When he returned it, he apparently murmured about how nice it would be to have a car with performance in the Royal Mews. On 15 November 1948, not long after Prince Philip had driven the aforementioned automobile, an order came through for a Rolls-Royce motor car for Their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Such a vehicle would have to meet their official needs which meant it must be a limousine, it would also have to have good performance since the Prince wished to drive it himself. The car would be the first RR in the stables as Lanchesters and Daimlers had been the previous norm. It was originally planned to be the only Phantom IV, a strictly one-off piece.

Rolls-Royce, aware that Daimler had held the Royal warrant to provide motor cars since 1900, was very keen to ensure that the car was

the best there had ever been, The board had earlier considered making a replacement for the pre-war Phantom III, but were wary that such a large and expensive motor car might not have a market in the weak post-war economy.

H.J. Mulliner was selected as the coachbuilder, so they prepared drawings for approval. The chassis, was delivered to them on 20 July 1949 for erection of the body. Prince Philip visited the workshops more than once while it was being built. When the automobile was completed in July 1950 its delivery was accompanied by a public announcement stating the Phantom IV had been "designed to the special order of Their Royal Highnesses, the Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh".

As the car was privately owned when delivered to the couple it was painted Valentine green (deep green with a slight blue secondary hue) with red belt-line striping. The limousine became an official state car of the United Kingdom upon Princess Elizabeth's accession to that country's throne in 1952; as such, it was repainted in the sovereign's colour scheme of royal claret and black. It remains in the Royal Mews and is still occasionally used for royal and state occasions. For example, it was used at the wedding of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton to carry Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, from Clarence House to Westminster Abbey. Hence 2018, saw this 67 year old vehicle playing another important roles at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Well, a Cadillac would not have gone down too well in Windsor, UK I reckon!

It is said that just 18 of the model were made, all supplied to royalty or heads of state. Sixteen are thought to survive. Prince Philip’s later personal cars included Lagonda and Alvis convertibles and until recently, a modern London taxi in which he took US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle for a trip. Could you see Trump in one?!

HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY TO THE CHEEKY LOOKING

AUSTIN HEALEY SPRITE.

The Austin-Healey Sprite was announced to the press in Monte Carlo by the British Motor Corporation on 20 May 1958, just before that year's Monaco Grand Prix. The Sprite was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company, with production at the MG factory at Abingdon. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a tuned version of the Austin A-Series 948 cc engine .

The Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the "frogeye" in the UK and the "bugeye" in the US, because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings. . There were no exterior door handles; the driver and passenger were required to reach inside to open the door. There was also no boot lid, owing to the need to retain as much structural integrity as possible, and access to the spare wheel and luggage compartment was achieved by tilting the seat-backs forward and reaching under the rear deck, a process likened to potholing by many owners, but which resulted in a large space available to store soft baggage.

Engine:

1958–1961: 948 cc A-Series 43 h.p. at 5200 rpm and figures at the time showed it had a top speed of 82.9 mph and could accelerate from 0–60 mph (in 20.5 seconds. Fuel consumption of 43 miles per imperial gallon

When the Mk. II Sprite was introduced in 1961 it was joined by a badge-engineered MG version, the Midget, reviving a model name used by MG from the late 1920s through to the mid 1950s. The car pictured is owned by MAPS members, Richard & Leanne Cane.
