Kerimaa is a small 100 hectare area in eastern Finland, on the fringe of

the city of Savonlinna where nowadays locates the recreation centre and

holiday complex of Kerimaa. Kerimaa has an honourable past and

glorious history in the distant ancient time.

KERIMAA – MYTHOLOGY

The ancient history of Kerimaa is closely related to the myths of creation of the

world and the early world views held by the Kalevala people, which in the first

half of the 19th century were represented by Elias Lönnrot, Finnish

ethnographer, in “Kalevala”, the Finnish national epic.

During his several folk tale collecting field trips, Lönnrot collected folk stories

and songs from a vast geographical area. The volume of the folklore materials

gathered by Lönnrot and other researchers at that time was immense, and only

small portion of it was included in the final version of the “Kalevala” epic.

“Kalevala” neither includes nor represents the entire range of popular

mythology and folk tales, which had for centuries been transferred from

generation to generation in the form of oral legends, songs, runes, fairy tales,

riddles and sayings. An even greater amount of folklore materials has been

simply neglected and forgotten, maybe forever.

Many researchers hold a view that Kerimaa is a synonym to Kalevala, but,

according to the findings of Kerimaa explorers, this ancient superpower and its

history in early ages expanded far outside the boundaries of Kalevala.

According to the official point of view, Kalevala in the broad sense of this name

is the geographical area that comprises Fennoscandia, the Baltic States and

the regions to the west of Russian Siberia. Whereas mythical Kerimaa was

regarded by ancient people as the whole world. So, Kerimaa has amalgamated

the myths of the initial creation and the prehistory of all peoples of the world.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

All researchers agree that the centre of the great power of Kalevala was at the

current location of the Kerilandia homestead in the Kerimäki municipality of

today’s Finland. They locate in Savonlinna and nowadays they form the

resort-village and leisure area of Kerimaa.

The etymology of the name Kerimaa.

The name Kerilandia has been introduced by the Roman historian Tacitus (55 –

120 A.D.). Tacitus also writes about the Fenni meaning the Finns and the

Laplanders.

A Greek explorer Pytheas (approx. 380-310 AD), who lived 400 years before

Tacitus, is known to have visited in Kerimaa approximately in the year 320 AD.

Pytheas called the area Ultima Thule (Thula, Thyle and Tile).

The Finnish name for Kerilandia is Kerimaa and it is called Kerimua in the

ancient Finnish dialect Savo. Other names are also used, such as Kalevala,

Kaleva, Kalevalan kankaat (Kalevala pine woods), Väinölä (by old shaman

Väinämöinen).

Despite the fact that the history of Kerimaa is part of the “Kalevala” epic which

comprises 50 runes (songs), scientists in different countries involved in the

research about Kerimaa-Kerilandia started to compose its own history.

The results of their work will be later presented in the Kerimaa web pages.

1.THE LEGEND OF GIANTS AN GREAT STONES

In ancient times, ice covered half of the territory of the whole world. The

Kingdom of Ice was populated by giants, trolls, goblins, witches and a horde of

all kinds of gnomes. Giants fought with people, while trolls daunted everybody

who dared to enter primeval forests. People were of small stature, but very

brave and sturdy. And the Sun was with people. Little by little, people advanced

their settlements farther and farther to the north, and the territory of the

Kingdom of Ice was shrinking. Again and again, Giants and trolls had to leave

their places of abode under the pressure of people and retreat to even more

remote corners of Pohjola.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Finally, giants lost their patience and flew into a rage seeing that they are being

deprived of their native land. At that time, rough cliffs emerged from under the

thawing ice. Giants crushed the cliffs and started throwing huge blocks of rock

at people. One of such stones can be seen now in Kerimaa-Kerilandia, but they

are also found throughout Finland, in Scandinavia, the Baltic States and even in

other European countries. In Europe, they are called megaliths. People have

used them to build high palaces, monuments and mysterious ritual structures

(for example, Stonehenge). Some stones thrown the farthest can be seen in

Mecca and even in Australia (Ayers Rock).

2.THE LEGEND OF THE GREAT STONE OF KERIMAA

Giant Ymir is throwing large boulders

The ice that covered in the ancient times the whole world started to thaw little by

little and the border of the Kingdom of Ice was slowly receding northwards.

Enraged giants, the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Ice started throwing stones

southwards.

Väinämöinen, wise old man, who lived in his homeland of Kerimaa, once was

walking about, when suddenly a huge stone thudded just beside him.

Väinämöinen looked at the stone in amazement and said (free translation):

“The stone seemed not a trivial one,

Tremendous boulder stone it was,

One hundred fathoms tall it stood,

Five miles breadth ways the stone lay.”

(A poem not included in “Kalevala”)

Väinämöinen built a home under the stone and used it for temporary staying

during his long travels and fishing. On the Kannantakainen lake, taimen and

vendace fishing was good, the surrounding woods were full of sweet berries

and mushrooms. From time to time, Väinämöinen was lucky in his skiing chase

after an elk in the thick lonely woods of Huosio.

Once upon a time, Väinämöinen assumed the demanding duties of Santa

Claus and went out for his Christmas voyage to children throughout the world –

during this voyage he needed a place to have a rest and stay at night.

Page 9: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Väinämöinen remembered the stone in Kerimaa and the hunting lodge

arranged there. This hunting lodge was chosen to be the resting place during

his long travels. So, every Christmas Santa Claus and his gnomes stop for a

rest under the Kerimaa stone, then they continue their voyage with presents to

children.

More or less all of the old legends and religions have a tale about the great

deluge. The myth of deluge can be found from over 150 folks and there are

hundreds of different versions of it. Every myth has similar features and many of

the respected researchers are agreeing that they are deriving from real,

genuine event in the blurry prehistory.

What did really take place back then? According to an early version of Kalevala

in the very beginning there was the Primordial Sea covering the whole surface

of the Earth for many infinities. Young Väinämöinen floated alone in the

enormous sea for hundreds of years without any knowledge of what life could

be. One day, Väinämöinen got a vicious cramp and sank several kilometres to

the depths of the sea before reaching the bottom. If someone else had been in

his shoes, the story wouldn’t have ended well. But Väinömöinen, being young

and strong as ever at that time, pounded the sea bottom with his fists and

created a hole in to the Earth’s crust. The water began to flow inside the hot and

fiery Earth’s crust. The water level descended and the mountains, gullies and

plateaus got exposed from the sea. After a while of trickling, Väinömöinen

rolled a big stone to cover the hole in order to prevent the disappearance of all

the water from the surface of the Earth. Väinämöinen pushed from the bottom

and after reaching the surface he glanced around with amazement. Kerimaa

and the whole world unfolded before his eyes. There were Kannantakainen and

Sylkynjärvi, and a bit farther Puruvesi and Saimaa. The rivers were rus hing and

the moist ground began to increment trees and bushes.

Page 11: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Even today in the north end of Kerimaa’s lake “Kannantakainen” there is an

opening in the depth of tens of kilometres, which is enclosed by a big stone

leading to the bottom of the Earth’s crust.

Nowadays Kerimaa’s Kannantakainen is a small lake full of fish. Divers are able

to see the stone in the bottom of the lake. The stone should not be moved,

since even the rest of the lakes and seas of the world would dash straight inside

the Earth’s burning crust.

4.VÄINÄMÖINEN CREATING THE WORLDS (Väinömöinen in Africa)

Among folks of the world, many creation myths are being told. Judaism,

Christianity and Islam have quite identical understanding on monotheistic

creation process. Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks and Chinese and many other

folks and cultures have a bit more varying perception on the matter.

When Elias Lönnrot gathered folk tales during his lengthy field trips for the

Finland’s national epic, Kalevala, there were huge amounts of material

available. He noticed that the material was controversial and there were several

versions varying by central characters and events in different localities. Elias

had to drop out some collateral versions from the published Kalevala. There are

several versions of the creation of the world. According to some, it was

Väinämöinen who created the world and according to others he only had a

minor role as an assistant.

Väinämöinen had his hands full when creating the world. He had to wander

around the land and arrange some mountains, lakes and rain forests here and

there. Some birch forests were set to the north and palm trees to the south.

Between north and south he drew a never ending line to give guidance for the

Sun. He ordered the Sun to shine on it at midday and demanded that day and

night have to be equally long as the line is reached. On land and water

Väinämöinen also drew a set of vertical and horizontal lines which were made

to ease travelling and tell apart distances. As the time has gone by the lines

have mostly disappeared, but the scientists have succeeded in developing

tools which enabled finding the location of these lines.

Moving even further from the central line dividing the world in to two halves, in a

wide canyon Väinämöinen met some dark pigmented creatures, who he named

Page 13: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

humans. Väinämöinen told about the northern land, beautiful places and

desirable residential areas to the humans. In the north, there is the kingdom of

welfare, Väinämöinen convinced. And like that, a group of humans began their

journey heading for the north. During this trip, the colour of their skins got lighter.

Humans got divided into different tribes and clans and they established homes

all over the land.

Väinämöinen donated many good words and spells to the humans. He adviced

them on the words for the birth of fire, the spells for making iron, the words

which can stop bleeding and skills to craft tools and weapons. He gave them

seeds of grain and many other useful gifts.

The humans were grateful, they praised and celebrated the wisdom and

kindness of Väinämöinen and promised to carefully follow the given directions

and advices. But shortly, after Väinämöinen had turned his back to leave and

continue his journey, humans were already attacking each other. With bows

and arrows they shot one and other. And with the axes, meant for cutting down

the trees, they beat each other. Later on, after hearing all this, Väinämöinen

heavily regretted giving the wisdom and the knowledge for use of the humans.

Page 14: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

5. THE BIG BANG – the encounter of myth and science

There is a story about Väinämöinen which is associated with a creation tale that

is amazingly in-line with the current scientific creation theory.

According to the oldest Ugrian lore, in the beginning Väinämöinen drifted in

infinite emptiness, in snow-white darkness with no destination, without passing

of time in deep silence. One day, after swallowing too much stardust

Väinämöinen got a stomach ache and he let loose a massive fart. This

triggered the Big Bang, the world began to form in the speed of light and the

time started passing.

Of that Väinämöinen voiced:

“A disastrous bang, fart long and devilish

splatters afar pattered, blow widely scattered

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

It became the living, filled was the void

Time began to pass, days to trot

years to stream, centuries to slide”

“Olipa paukku pahanlainen, pieru pitkä pirunmoinen

roiske kauas ropisi, laaki laajalle levisi

Siitä syntyi elollinen, tyhjä tuli täytetyksi

Aika alkoi kulua, päivät juosta jolkutella

vuodet virtana vieriä, vuosisadat sujutella”

And this is how the creation tales and scientific world view were brought

together.

6. SWORD OF VÄINÄMÖINEN

Wiseman Väinämöinen dealt with all political and economic issues of his

country. And however complicated the problem happened to be, he usually

settled playing the kantele (harp) and casting spells. But once the political

situation in the world became so aggravated that the strains of the kantele

could help no more. An intense row broke out between Louhi, the mighty

hostess of Pohjola, and Seppo Ilmarinen, the blacksmith of Kalevala. Ilmarinen

believed that Pohjola people had failed to pay for the Sampo brand money

making machine, delivered to Pohjola according to the agreement.

Maybe, the kinship took effect, anyway, the wiseman Väinämöinen took the

side of his brother blacksmith Ilmarinen. Väinämöinen asked Ilmarinen to forge

him a good sword as a tool for solving disputes. Ilmarinen made everything as

requested:

Well the heavy sword he tempers,

Ornaments the hero-weapon

With the finest gold and silver.”

(Kalevala: Poem 39)

The punitive expedition to Pohjola was quite successful, although in the heat of

the battle Sampo fell overboard and sank in the sea. The sword of

Väinämöinen excellently served the task. The warlord and host of Pohjola

tasted well its punishing power – he was killed in battle by the sword of

Väinämöinen. With the help of his sword Väinämöinen also accomplished his

other feats.

Page 18: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

After peace was restored in the world, Väinämöinen little cared about his smart

sword, as now there was no need in it, and during one of his regular travels he

thrust it in a stone. The sword was retrieved from the stone by one young man,

tm

The water originating from the thawing glaciers of the last ice age and the

depressions developed under the weight of glaciers have made up the unique

landscape of Finland, a country of thousands of lakes. The majority of the lakes

lie in eastern Finland, in the Savo area and in Karelia. The lake Paasvesi, which

is also named Paasivesi or Paasselkä and is part of the Orivesi lake and the

Suur-Saimaa catchment basin, is one of the most mythical lakes in the country.

Paasselkä is situated near Kerimaa. Paasvesi is a deep lake with an oval shape

and a length of 10 km. People have always thought the lake to be mystic and

daunting. In the vicinity of Paasvesi unusual phenomena take place and

strange optical effects are observed. The ancient folk tales tell about devils

living in Paasvesi.

Paasvesi Devil is an optical phenomenon, which the local population on the

shores of the lake has regularly observed for more than three centuries. Last

time it was seen in December 2003 and in summer 2005. Paasvesi Devil is a

bright glowing sphere swiftly moving from one place to another. The devil

communicates with people usually by its movement. At the beginning of the

18th century, when it first appeared, it marked the borderline between the

fishing areas of the Savo and Karelia peoples. In a sense, it behaved as a

border guard in this case. Sometimes, the devil showed to the locals good

fishing places. There has also been a popular belief that when the devil

appears, then new childbirths are to be expected. Usually, the devil shows up

as a well-intentioned spirit. The glowing can sometimes continue for up to half

an hour, during this time its colour and shape can change.

Scientists believe that this is a crater lake created about two hundred million

years ago by the fall of a meteorite. Ancient people knew more about the

origination of the local phenomena and put their knowledge in their traditional

stories. In ancient times, infuriated giants living at the North Pole threw great

stones at people. Once the biggest giant, whose name was Ymir, launched a

boulder with a diameter of one kilometre and it fell in the Orivesi lake

splattering water all around the lake. These splatters gave birth to all lakes in

the Suur-Saimaa catchment basin. The boulder stone (“kivipaasi” in Finnish)

gave the name to lake itself. Unfortunately, the stone had been populated by

earth goblins and evil spirits. These evil spirits moved to Savo together with the

boulder stone and there they started to bring ill luck to people and frighten

them with elf-fires and other unusual phenomena.

Such is the legend of the Paasvesi lake in Orivesi and its mysteries. The

legend is described in the book by Sulo Strömberg “Legends of Paasvesi

devils and evil spirits” (“Tarinoita Paasveen piruista ja pohuista”) published in

2006. The book is out of stock, but can be found in libraries.

8. THE CHURCH OF KERIMÄKI – the world’s greatest wooden

Prehistory of the church (previously unknown lore)

In antiquity Kerimaa, also refered as Kalevala, there was the best game lands

and the most rewarding fishing grounds. On the other hand they were gloomy

and frightening wilderness back then, where trolls, goblins, elves, gnomes and

other numerous wood spirits lived. A hunter, so brave that he would just enter

this deep forest, was nowhere to be found before performing suitable sacrifices

and prayers to every god necessary.

The great megalith stone of Kerimaa was one of the most important sacred

places in which people gathered especially during the midsummer celebration.

The celebration of summer started off with the prayers of shamans and

offerings which were then followed by boisterous celebration lasting for a week.

A great bonfire was lit at the feet of the great stone and around it old men were

telling their tales. The old women were gossiping, the youth was jumping

around their ring game and checking up possible partner candidates.

As the time passed Christianity arrived, first the religion of Byzantium came

from east and later came the Pope’s version of the same religion brought by the

King Svean Erik. The warriors of Kalevala didn’t give up their old reliable old

gods easily even though the amount of them was quite massive compared to

the new Jesus-religion which only included one god alternative. The huge

number of gods and elves then resulted in being the factor destroying this old

religion. But before that many cross carrying war party was needed both from

east as well as from west to turn the heads of stubborn people of Kalevala. At

that point the people of Kalevala were started to be called by different tribe

names; there were hämäläiset, karjalaiset, Finnish and finally savolaiset. Of

course there was also lappalaiset, who were not seen as the people of

Kalevala.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Church of Väinämöinen. Place of Sacrifice

The priests of Byzantium accepted the old places of worship and discussed and

adjusted the old and new religion peacefully together. Unlike the priests, the

Pope’s knights of the cross and bishops were way more mischievous. Old

sacred groves were beat over, Sami sacred places were pushed over and the

places of worship were destroyed. At first Kerimaa’s sacrificial site of great

shrine stone was replaced with small Christian altar. The great megalith stone

was briefly called the church of Väinämöinen. Then came the iron clad soldiers,

the tight-lipped priests and bishops sent by the king Svea. And by their

demands the forest altar got demolished. Impetuous bishop ordered the altar to

be moved ten kilometres to a new place, ashore by beautiful Puruvesi and

prohibited people from calling it the church of Väinämöinen. It was easier for the

bishops to get there by horse rides to preach contrition to people in Latin. The

people learnt to worship the new god, who then established his place also

among Savonians. A couple of hundred years passed by and a new graceful

church was built. There were that much old spirit of Väinämöinen left in the

villagers that the church was built to be the biggest in the world at once.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Present-day church

In the middle of 1800s there were approximately 10 000 people in the

congregation of Kerimäki, but the congregation didn’t have their own proper

church. The planning began and the goal was set to having a church in which

they could fit half of members of the congregation. The construction of the

church took several years and along with the experienced workers, hundreds of

the parishioners joined the work. The church was completed in the year of 1848

and it is the biggest church in Finland and the biggest wooden church in the

whole wide world.

9. THE GOLF COURSE OF KERIMAA

There is a glorious 18 hole round golf course in Kerimaa. Due to its extensive

varying elevations on the surface, it is almost unique in the whole world. In a

few years, the course will be celebrating its 30th anniversary.

A game which was closely related to golf was played nearby Kerimaa already

thousands of years ago, during the archaic time of Kalevala. A club, or a mallet

(karttu), was used as a playing instrument. The word mallet might have

provided the base for the current name of a golf club, although the origin of the

name has been searched from the dialect of Scotland as well as from Dutch

language. The researches of ancient history are quite unanimous that the term

for golf club had drifted to Europe even before the beginning of chronology.

During the time of Kalevala, the corresponding item for a golf ball was circular

or multifaceted ball, which was carved out of hard birch. Another production

method was to tie a compact ball out of shreds of elk leather and to harden the

ball in salt water.

From the very beginning the idea of the game was to hit the ball with mallet

aiming towards the nest of a woodpecker. There were about ten players. First

to hit their ball in to the nest hole was the winner. Since then the game was

expanded so that seven trees, with suitable distances to one, and other were

chosen, cut down and a hole was drilled into the stump. The players were now

Page 26: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

supposed to hit every hole during their turn. The player, who was the first to hit

all the hole, was announced to be the winner.

There are only a few referenced restored about this archaic game. According to

lores the inventor of the game was the blacksmith Ilmarinen and the name of

the game would have been called ”the mallet ball of Ilmainen” (Ilmarisen

karttupallo). It was apparently only played by the best warriors of different tribes.

The game was prohibited from women even though in the ancient history of

Kalevala woman is very equal with men. Among the folk more famous and easy

form of game was “kyykkä”, which was played with a similar mallet but it was

thrown towards the standing up tree pins.

10. THE LEGEND OF THE BEAR

Long ago, in the ancient times, after Väinämöinen left for one of his regular travels,

terrible wolves came to the woods of Kerilandia. They were huge, savage and

blood-thirsty beasts. All animals of Kerimaa – elks, reindeers, hares, squirrels and

even many kinds of birds were stricken by horror. Wolves chased all animals, nobody

was left in peace.

At last, the wise Owl lost his patience and decided to put an end to this situation. He

sent out ravens to all woods with an invitation to all their inhabitants to gather for a

meeting in the first half of the day (when wolves sleep) at the edge of the wood near the

Great Stone of Kerimaa. Animals started cautiously come together at the agreed place,

constantly looking back and about in fear. But, little by little, getting support from their

fellow animals, they threw off their reserve. Soon, they unanimously loudly

disapproved the behaviour of wolves. But nobody could suggest what to do next.

Finally, the wise Owl declared: “We have to send a message to Väinämöinen and

inform him about the situation here. Only he can moderate wolves.”

Page 28: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

“But we don’t know the whereabouts of Väinämöinen. He can be at the feast in Pohjola,

but the music festival in Saaremaa is also possible. He can be taking part in the annual

gathering of eastern shamans or relax at the baking festival of southern hostesses.

Väinämöinen moves about very fast and he adores the company of women.”

“We have to send out messengers in all directions throughout the world” – decided the

wise Owl. “Let reindeers go to the north, roes will run to the north-east, let lynxes trot to

the east and foxes to the south-east. Let elks stride to the south, gulls will fly to the

south-west and crows to the west over the great sea, the band of lemmings will run to

the north-west. One of you will surely find Väinämöinen and inform him about the

situation here.”

Everybody agreed with the proposal of the wise Owl. All messengers departed towards

their assigned destination, while the remaining animals decided to hide under the

Great Stone. A day passed, the week ended, then months run by. Messengers started

to return, but without any good news. Väinämöinen was not to be found neither in the

east nor in the south, even in the west nobody saw him.

Reindeers were the last to return from the north and they were full of joy. The searched

everywhere and at last found Väinämöinen at the merrymaking in Pohjola.

Väinämöinen became very angry about the shameful behaviour of wolves in his native

land.

He said to reindeers: “I cannot leave everything here and go for putting wolves in the

right way, but I will provide you with a new protector, the lord of woods, who will master

wolves.”

Page 29: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Then Väinämöinen accomplished a mighty magic and cast spells. The Bear, lord of

woods, was born.

So, the Bear came to Kerimaa and law and order were restored in the woods.

Ever since then, bears have been considered guards of Kerimaa. Today, the sculpted

image of a family of bears protects the borders of Kerimaa from wolves, bans them

from disturbing animals and people living in Kerimaa.

The bear is a so much respected and worshipped resident of Kerimaa woods that it is

a custom to avoid calling him just “bear”, but instead the local people use various

periphrases. 99 periphrases are known to be used to talk about bears.

“When the neighbours saw it they measured the length at ten meters”

“Well that weren’t so big then” blurt Matti from Kerimaa. “Yesterday evening I

caught so massive pike that when I cut its stomach open I found the 14

fishermen from the village of Silvola, who went missing last week during the

night fishing trip, and their boat which they had when they were fishing at night.

At the bow of the boat the lantern was still burning.”

Page 31: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Taavetti from Tihvii took a look at Matti with disbelief. “Now you must have lied

Matti, I’m not believing that.”

Matti was silent for a moment and glanced at Taavetti. “Well if you take five

12. KERIMAA’S SALMON POND

In the beginning the heroes of Kalevala Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen travelled

while fishings “along the canvas of Kalevala, headlands of Puruvesi”. They had

a poor catch on the bottom of their boat and while they were rowing in

Sylkynjärvi they met Väinämöinen. Väinämöinen had birch bark container on

this back which “exuded by plump salmons, barb chins tremored, hundreds of

whitefish, plenty of perch”.

Of that uttered Ilmarinen: “Oh you brother Väinämöinen, fisherman of my taste,

where have you got all the beautiful fish, found the glorious salmons, where is

this best fishing spot, distant fishing shed of yours.”

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Väinämöinen responded: “Oh you brother Ilmarinen, the hammerer of the sky’s

dome, crafter of the great Sampo, of course I might tell you, slur the secret,

word of this region verify, reveal the greatest fishery of all.” And so

Väinämöinen told Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen that the best fishery laid there,

right behind the isthmus.

From that point on the lake has been called Kannantakainen (behind the

isthmus) and it still is found to be a great spot for fishing. Fishing permit can be

13. TALES OF KERIMAA: THE PATH OF LOVE

Son of Väinämöinen, Saamu, was unmarried, jobless, lonely wanderer who

had started to feel strange yearning in his chest. Saamu wandered in forests

and seldom dropped by the village. But when he happened to drop by his gaze

mostly settled upon the daughters of different farms. The young maidens didn’t

really care for this bizarre wanderer. The maidens with golden locks began to

trouble Saamu’s dreams and distract his concentration on hunting so badly that

he decided to ask for advice from the more experienced men of Kalevala. The

question of finding a bride was irritating Saamu.

Saamu went first to ask the blacksmith Ilmarinen some advice. Ilmarinen

willingly promised to forge him a wife from iron and bronze. Ilmarinen had plenty

of experience having done this already before when he forged a housekeeper

from gold for himself. Ilmarinen praised the good qualities of the forged wife,

she won’t nag or forbid, won’t go to dances or glance at other men. Ilmarinen

told about his wife even handing over some gold nuggets from her hair or gold

coins from her loins during rough times.

Saamu wasn’t interested in a lifeless statue. He went to seek an advice on

getting a wife from the warlord of Kalevala, Iku-Tiera.

Iku-Tiera had some straightforward hints: “Young man, equip an armament

from the bachelors of the village and go for a trip to east and steal a wife for

yourself. From there you can find some beauties, dark and blond, gentle and

hot-blooded. There are plenty of gorgeous women to choose from. But be

aware of the brothers and the rivals. Kill the men otherwise they might want to

Saamu wasn’t interested in a violent stealing trip like this either. He went to see

the famous ladies men, Lieto Lemminkäinen, and ask her secret for success

among women. “I do have many tricks to get women laugh and maids to cry,”

said Lieto Lemminkäinen. “But you are the kind of crab of the forests that the

result is already sealed when you leave for the distant land to find a maiden.

There northern taciturn men are very fancied among women.Interest is present

both in young maidens as well as a bit more mature housewives of mansions. It

is easy to wheedle the daughters to love but time consuming as well.

Wheedling of the housewives will be faster if you make sure that the head of the

house is keeping busy with other things. Be aware of too beautiful and arrogant

women. The best final result will be reached when you don’t search for the most

gorgeous one but you satisfy with a moderate appearance and higher age. By

that you will get a passionate lover and faithful partner. Keep yourself always

ready to leave and don’t stay waiting for the dowry if the wife of a lord decides to

join you.”

Page 36: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

The advices given by Lemminkäinen didn’t impress Saamu. Finaly he visited

his grandmother, Ilmatar. Ilmatar gave an advice to her child: ”Go to a great

stone in Kerimaa. There is a stable path which you circle aroung three times

clockwise and three times anticlockwise. Do this every single day for a week.

Then, on Saturday go to the dances held in the cottage. Choose the prettiest of

the maidens are dance with her amorous dances until the next morning. She

will become a faithful partner for you. Start you honeymoon by taking your bride

to the path of love in Kerimaa. Circle around the path three times, in both

directions. That will ensure fertility for your union and there will be enough love

for over infinity.”

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Saamu followed the advices given by his wise grandmother and met a girl,

Päivikki, the most beautiful maiden of all the deep forests. The young couple’s

wedding was celebrated for a week in Kerimaa. Every day they circled around

the path of love and fell more deeply in love with each other. After an year

Päivikki gave birth to their first child. The child was named Saamu-Väinä after

his father and grandfather.

The path of love is in Kerimaa even today. The ones walked along it have found

their brides and grooms. This walk is seen as a strong fertility rite.

14. STORY OF ALEKSANTERI NEVSKI

A new strong trade state, Novgorod, had emerged during the late first

millennium as the south-east neighbour of Kerimaa and Kalevala. Residents of

the city were merchants and artisans. Due to economic success of the city

Novgorod was constantly under a threat of war. Byzantine principalities from

south and the Catholic German order of knighthood took turns in persecuting

the city. The invincible Tatars and Mongolians swarmed from east and

aggressive kings of Sweden from west. The raids from north were conducted

by paga suumi's and jäämi's.

The Pope's fleet is attacked Novgorod

Only the warriors of Kalevala were in an alliance with Novgorod as they had

been founding Novgorod at one time. But during these times the greatness of

Kalevala was slowly fading and ending. The former great power of Kalevala

was wobbling under the pressure of new religions and masteries. The old gods

had lost all of their power and strength. The people didn’t believe in Odin, Thor,

Iki-Turso or not even in Ukko anymore. Even Väinämöinen was forgotten and

he was seriously considering retiring. Hero of the great hostile expedition to

Pohjola, Seppo Ilmarinen, was now an old grumpy man, powerful Kullervo has

a constant depression and the famous ladies’ man and war hero suffered from

a prostate bother. Only the lance, Iku-Tiera Nieranpoika, maintained the tribe’s

military reputation alive.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

During these turbulent times a Swedish jarl was gathering armaments by the

Pope’s order to crush the trade republic of Novgorod, which spread false

Christianity. The real reason was that Novgorod had grown far too great centre

of power and was dominating important trade of the east. The Swedish jarl put

together the greatest war party ever seen in Pohjola. He was pursuing princes,

chieftains and mercenaries by promising incredible large hiring wages. The jarl

promised to divide all kind of richness and treasures of Novgorod among his

soldiers. This caused the best archers and lances of Folkunga to join the war

party as well as the armoured German knights, fierce Norwegian offspring of

Vikings, proselytized Estonians and partly pagan suumi's and jäämi's'. The

huge war party moved over the Baltic Sea with a navy, whose other head only

reached the island of Gotland while the other head was already there in the

bottom part of the Baltic Sea.

The superiority of the alliance of the armament was multiple compared to the

war party of Novgorod. The end was near for it. At that time the ruler of

Novgorod was a young prince, Aleksanteri the son of Jaroslav. He was only in

his twenties when the international armament beached on the shore of river

Neva to suppress the city of Novgorod. The bourgeois of the city helplessly

begged Aleksanteri to surrender, but Aleksanteri didn’t even take the

suggestion under consideration. Desperate old generals ask Aleksanteri to

arrange the defence of the city according to the old rules of warcraft and

thereby delay honourably the ultimate destruction of the city.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Despite the suggestions, Aleksanteri acted differently than hinted by the fathers

of the city and the generals. He gathered his minor armament and marched

rapidly to confront the enemy. During the foggy hours of the morning ashore of

the Neva river, he succeeded to surprise the alliance and had time to cause a

lot of damage before the enemy was able to get organized for defence and

counter-attack. The fierce battle lasted the whole day but eventually the

superiority of the alliance got too powerful. The troops of Aleksanteri, or what

was left of those, retreated to the beach of the river Neva to defiantly wait for the

final attack.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

When the doom already seemed inevitable, the enemy got attacked by a

furious guerrilla group of the Kalevala’s veterans led by Väinämöinen himself.

The blacksmith Ilmarinen swung his heavy hammer instantly breaking a spine

of an enemy, Lieto Lemminkäinen appeared to have grown younger tens of

years as he rode fully armed against the armored knights and the gloomy

Kullervo brought enemies down only by his ferocious swearing. The squire of

Iku-Tiera had his arms full of spears, which got frequently thrown by Tiura

piercing ten enemies with only one spear. Old man Väinämöinen played

powerfully his harp made by the jawbone of a pike. The music and spells sank

the enemies deep into the swamp of the river of Neva. Barely a handful of

soldiers succeeded to escape.

When the little war party of Aleksanteri returned to the city as winners couldn’t

the residents believe their own eyes. They had already prepared for a painful

death and shameful slavery. The joy of rescue was immense. The victory of

Aleksanteri was celebrated and he was given the title “Nevalainen” (Nevski)

and a messenger was sent to Constantinople to request that Aleksanteri would

be announced as a saint. After all he had saved Byzantium’s Orthodox Church

from falling into the hands of the Catholic Pope.

During the two week celebration Lemminkäinen got engaged and slept with

hundred women, Kullervo smiled the first time in his entire life and on request of

the thankful merchants, Ilmarinen the blacksmith forged a handsome statue of

Aleksanteri in the city market. Even old Väinämöinen became younger and

played his harp in the middle of happy crowd of children. He also sang poems of

the great fight where the Swedish jarl got badly beaten up. So bitter was the

defeat for western Christendom that the Pope strictly prohibited writing

anything on chronicles of that awful and shameful defeat. Only the songs of

Page 46: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Väinämöinen and the chronicles of orthodox monks were left behind to tell the

posterity about the amazing victory of Aleksanteri.

Finally was the time for the veterans of Kalevala to return to Kerimaa.

Lemminkäinen was especially in hurry since he noticed to have gained

hundred angry mother-in-laws. Every single one of them nagged to him all day.

There seemed to be no limit in Aleksanteri’s gratitude towards them. Although

he pointed out that the victory without the soldiers of Kalevala was only matter

of a couple of hours. Aleksanteri swore eternal friendship to Kalevala and

promised to visit Kerimaa next year for the midsummer party. “In Kerimaa

there are so breath-taking views, great fishing and berry-picking lands that I

am going to get some land from there for my summer palace.” he added to his

promise.

This was the tale of Aleksanteri Nevalainen, who in the year of 1240

accomplished a great victory at the age of twenty.

One of the most significant war heroes was the warrior Iku-Tieran. It is told he

loved to be at war so much that he even abandoned his wife and left her

unsatisfied on their wedding night because he had to make it to the next war.

Despite of the negligence of his responsibilities, his family spread broadly to

Karjala and Savo. Men of the family were all warriors and served the kings of

Sweden and Denmark on their military expeditions as well as among the troops

of the princes of Moscow. The stem living in Finland accepted Savolainen as

their last name due to the pressure coming from priests. Antti Savolainen was

one progenitor of the family, whose oldest sons and grandsons were christened

Antti.

Two years later the few numbered defenders of the castle ended up under an

16. VÄINÄMÖINEN IN CHINESE HISTORY

The earliest Chinese history of creation is very much identical with the

Kalevala's corresponding one. Väinämöinen was born out of an egg of a bluebill

bird. In the Chinese version, the egg in question was a cosmic egg wherefrom

the first living creature, Pan Gu, creator of the worlds, was born. The

congruence of the stories is so clear, that the legend of Pan Gu can be said to

be a later oriental variation of the Kalevala and Väinämöinen mythologies.

In his youth, Väinämöinen spent a lot of time in the Orient. He found it very

comfortable and the people to be hard-working and benevolent. When the

adults were in the fields working, the children used to gather around

Väinämöinen on the village square. Väinämöinen loved sharing stories about

his life in faraway lands. The children called him "Taata" or Uncle Tao. Those

who could not yet say the letter “t” and pronounced the name as Lao.

Väinämöinen was also honoured with the name Zi, which means master. In

later times, the Chinese often referred to Väinämöinen as Lao-Tzu (Laozi).

Before long, the adults also started to flock around Uncle Tao to listen to his

stories. Taata-Tao Väinämöinen told about the birth of the world, about

Kalevala and the Northland, the giants and the trolls, and about his friend Yinxi,

who was the keeper of the Western gate. He also advised the parents and

Page 50: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

princes and heads of village, who travelled great distances to meet him. Soon

he found himself amidst a group of wise men, who wanted to become his

disciples or just to debate with him.

One of these inquisitive youngsters was Siddhartha Gautama, a prince from a

mountainous country. Siddhartha had been searching for his path in life, but

had yet to find a suitable teacher. But after meeting Väinämöinen, he knew he

had discovered ultimate knowledge and wisdom. Väinämöinen spent a lot of

time conversing with Siddhartha. After discovering Siddhartha's uncertainty

and moodiness, he said: "Listen, Sid, it's always best to take the middle road.

That way you won't fall into the ditch." And that’s when Siddhartha finally felt

enlightened and reached a state of contentment – Nirvana.

Another studious young man, Kung Fu-Tze, was also searching for his place in

this world. Väinämöinen saw that Kung had a very benevolent nature,

respected his parents and those of higher rank, but also firmly defended the

disadvantaged and the oppressed. Väinämöinen and Kung engaged in long

discussions. Finally, Väinämöinen said: "Listen, Kung, you have very good

ideas and goals. Seek the service of some king and give him guidance in ruling

Page 51: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

his kingdom. In these troubled times, kings come in abundance, each crueller

than the next. The king whom you serve with your wisdom will be stronger and

better than the rest." Kung followed Väinämöinen's advice. He became the

Emperor's trusted adviser and civilizer of the people. His followers, who

continued to serve the court as civil servants over the next two thousand years,

laid the foundation for its great achievements.

17. THE CHINESE CELESTIAL ORDER

Two or three thousand years ago, Väinämöinen was known in China by the

name of Laozi. He taught the Chinese many useful things and shared the

secrets of fire, iron and silk. He introduced the art of printing and later

gunpowder so that the Chinese could better celebrate their many festivities. As

the Chinese could not use the same means of payment as was used in

Kalevala, i.e. squirrel skins, Väinämöinen came up with a more practical

solution and invented paper money.

The most important thing, however, was the determination with which the

Oriental Laotzi-Väinämöinen promoted the culture and civilization of the East.

His most talented students included Siddhartha Gautama, who later became

known as Buddha, and Master Kong or Confucius. Since Väinämöinen was

quite preoccupied with the many events taking place at home and in other parts

of the world, he and his wise students came up with a similar divine system of

governance that the ancient Greeks and other peoples have used.

Here, the Jade Emperor was at the top of the pack. The system itself was

based on the Trinity doctrine, which was later adopted by the Early Christians.

The Holy Trinity: The Jade Emperor, the Holy Spirit Dao and the wise Goddess

of Dawn. When people suggested that Väinämöinen or Laozi should also be

identified as the highest divinity, he modestly declined. However, he was very

generous with the other deities: death was assigned to ten different gods and

happiness to three.

Laozi created a complex heavenly bureaucracy with separate ministries for

thunder and wind, war, wealth and literature. Below the ministries there were

officials administered by the Great Emperor of the Eastern Peak and the

Dragon Kings.

The gods that Väinämöinen referred to were, of course, not actual deities, but

distinguished soldiers, philosophers, civil servants and other similar people.

Page 53: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

One of these ingenious individuals was a soldier called Guan Yu, who was

nominated to be the God of War. During Väinämöinen’s long absences, the

system worked after a fashion, but as time passed, it did, of course, turn into a

rigid bureaucracy that nobody could control.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

18. THE STORY OF VÄINÄMÖINEN AND THE MONKEY KING

In spite of the heavenly hierarchy developed by Laozi-Väinämöinen, life in

ancient China was not always stable. There was much plotting and outright

rebellions against the Jade Emperor, mostly by a warrior king called the

Monkey King and his invincible guards nicknamed the Monkeys. The Monkey

King travelled around the provinces and was happy to speak to ordinary people.

His wild ways and funny encounters were widely reported throughout the

Kingdom, and in time, they turned into legends. As the Emperor's military was

no match for this rogue King, the ministers decided to solve the problem in a

pragmatic manner, i.e. by using bribes. The Monkey King was offered an

important post in the court of the Jade Emperor. Flattered by the offer, he

accepted the job only to discover that it was actually a humble job as a

stableman. Infuriated, the Monkey King returned home to his own province,

where he was the undefeated king and loved by his people.

Rebellion against the Emperor continued as did the robberies of the Imperial

tax collectors. Li, the Emperor's military commander, sent a large army to

subdue the stubborn Monkey King, but the King led his well-trained elite troops

to an easy victory.

Again, the Monkey King was offered a post at the Imperial Court, this time in a

slightly more prominent position. The Monkey King travelled to the Court, but

instead of submitting to the Emperor’s will, robbed the Imperial treasury during

a party organised by the Empress. The Monkey King and his victorious army

returned home, and with the Imperial treats stolen from the party, organised a

grand feast for his subjects. Even today, this day is commemorated on the 15th

of the eight month of the lunar calendar. The Mid-Autumn Festival is

traditionally celebrated by women and children, but not by men, as the Jade

Emperor's elite troops were not able to defeat the Monkey King's warriors.

Page 55: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

The Jade Emperor was furious and turned to Laozi-Väinämöinen for advice.

The Monkey King had become a problem that had to be solved one way or

another. Väinämöinen knew the Monkey King very well, because they had

been on many adventures and campaigns together. They had become friends,

who enjoyed hunting in Kalevala, had participated in the Trojan War, robbed

the Sampo, and accompanied the Argonauts on their quest. Väinämöinen knew

that the Emperor was up against an impossible task, as he himself had made

the King immortal. And as if that was not enough, he and the King had travelled

to the underworld, Tuonela, to wipe the Monkey King's name from the list of

those to be collected by death.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

However, now Väinämöinen felt that the Monkey King should finally grow up.

He remembered his old student Siddhartha Gautama, who was living and

teaching in India at the time. Väinämöinen advised the Emperor to give the

Monkey King an important, but dangerous mission: the King should escort

monk Xuan Zang to India and bring back the Buddha's sacred writings. Just as

Väinämöinen had anticipated, this journey changed the King completely, and

he lived the rest of his life as Sun Wukong, a much respected teacher and

scholar.

In the course of time, the Monkey King's life has inspired many stories and

songs, making him a very popular figure in Chinese culture and art. He has, in

fact, become immortal, just as Laozi-Väinämöinen once promised.

Emperor Zhu Zhanji was known for his great thirst for knowledge. The

Emperor was particularly interested in the old tales of the wizard king

Väinämöinen. The ancient tales of Kalevala have much in common with the

pre-history of China. Copies of the thousands of years old tales of

Väinämöinen, Kerimaa and Kalevala were available in the imperial library

taking up a room of their own, but unfortunately nearly all the archives of the

Ming dynasty were later destroyed.

Emperor's secret expedition

When commencing the admiral for his seventh expedition, the Emperor

gave secret instructions to the admiral regarding the purpose and destination

of their journey. The reason for such secrecy was the internal battle for power

at the court which endangered the Emperor's activities, and even his power.

The kung fu officials did not approve, and also distained exchange with

foreigners regarding it both unnecessary and detrimental to the Chinese

culture.

Since the domestic politics, the battle for power and intrigues of the court

posed and ever-increasing danger, the Emperor ordered the Admiral Zheng

He to stage his own death, and then freely commence the 8th expedition. The

aim of this expedition was to find the mythic Kalevala and its center Kerimaa.

Additionally, the aim was to gain information about the countries and cultures

of the lands of the setting sun.

Mysterious 8th expedition between 1433 and 1445

After staging his own death, the admiral sailed together with his loyal crew on

three gigantic 125 meter long Ocean Dzonk vessels around the cape of Africa.

On the southern Atlantic Ocean a great storm hit the vessels, and one of them

sank while others landed on the continent of South America. The Chinese

explorers met various indigenous tribe, and among others also a tribe whose

language resembled an ancient Chinese dialect. Thy also encountered a small

white tribe whom the admiral considered to be the remaining few of the first

inhabitants of the continent.

After collecting some flora and fauna, and exchanging goods with the tribes,

Zheng He headed north along the coast. In the Caribbean they encountered

and fought against various hostile tribes, and lost a great number of their men

and yet another of their vessels. The admiral also sent two delegations to the

west with gold, silk and spices to meet the Inca and Aztec rulers.

Hurricane in the Atlantic

On their way to the north, the expedition faced various new indigenous

tribes, and with a few exceptions, they were generally well received and the

admiral collected abundant information to deliver to the Emperor. Around what

is now known as Newfoundland Zheng He headed towards North-East. After

sailing past Greenland and Iceland, Zheng He was certain that their expedition

had reached the right latitude but was yet too far in the west. Yet another storm

hit the vessel on the coast of Iceland, and the last Dzonk vessel hit the rocks.

Some of the crew managed to escape, and the admiral acquired a large fishing

ship from the locals. The journey continued across the North Sea and the

straits of Denmark towards the coast of Finland.

Zheng He write a report to the Emperor

After encountering various challenges the remaining ten strong crew

reached Kermaa in 1445. The wizard Väinämöinen had departed to the North,

and only ruins remained of the ancient kingdom of Kerimaa. Local poetic

singers sang the songs of the glorious days of Kerimaa to the admiral. Admiral

Zheng He died at the age of 84, and his loyal followers burned his body and

spread the ashes near the great stone of Kerimaa. A local stone cutter who

attended the service carved an obituary in the stone. The remains of the

expedition crew headed home to China but died one after another on the

journey back. The last survival, eunuch Bao, made it to Constantinople where

the Byzantines arrested him since they believed him to be a Turkish spy. Bao

completed the expedition report to the Emperor and drew a new map of the

world. Constantinople was destroyed under the attack of the Turks in 1454,

and the report disappeared. And Columbus "discovered" America 39 years

later

At the beginning of times, when the world was being born, the air was

filled with confusion and enthusiasm. The wizard Väinämöinen was the first to

start systematically bringing order into the chaos. The task at hand was a

massive one, and he needed help in creating and building. All the corners of the

world were under the influence of strong forces, and flows of visible and

invisible energy rocked the Earth. Among men, these forces later became

known as gods.

Once the ground had cooled and the celestial bodies were firmly on their orbits,

Väinämöinen set out toward the sunrise. He met Izanagi, who was mighty in

force but very lonely. Väinämöinen introduced Izanagi to a beautiful maiden,

Izanami. The two fell in love and decided to show their gratitude to

Väinämöinen by promising their still unborn daughter to him as a bride.

Väinämöinen visited Izanagi and Izanami often, sometimes bringing the

blacksmith Ilmarinen or warriors Lemminkäinen and Iku-Tiera along with him.

Upon his travels, Väinämöinen became acquainted with Izanagi and Izanami’s

three daughters, and eventually proposed to the beautiful Amaterasu. However,

the never-ending wrangling among the girls soon wore him out and he

abandoned Amaterasu. It is generally believed that Väinämöinen is the great

grandfather of Jimmu, Japan's first emperor.

21.VÄINÄMÖINEN IN ANCIENT GREECE

At the beginning of time Väinämöinen enjoyed wandering the length and

breadth of the Earth. Often he was accompanied by one of the Kalevala heroes.

On this particular occasion, his companion was Iku-Tiera, head of the Kalevala

warriors and a renowned spearman.

While heading south, Väinämöinen told Iku-Tiera stories about the time when

the world was still young.

“You should have seen the fussing and the fighting,” Väinämöinen said. “First

there was Chaos, a great void of emptiness, but then Gaia was born, hanging in

the middle of the void. Then Eros, love, emerged, and then Nyx who was the

night, and Erebus, the darkness. Gaia gave birth to Uranus, the sky, and

Pontus, who was the sea. But then everything went completely mad. Uranus

slept with his mother, Gaia, and the Titans and the Cyclops and the monsters

with a hundred arms were born. Things went from bad to worse and at one point

Cronus, one of Uranus' sons, castrated his father to stop him from breeding

more monsters. Sadly, the plan did not work out and the Erinyes, the Giants

and the Nymphs emerged. I used to attend their family gatherings and was

utterly confused about the connections between these gods and half-gods. A

furious power struggle started and led to much fighting, intrigue, fraud, mixed

marriages, and even incest. Luckily the people finally took over. You might find

it hard to believe, but at that time the men actually brought some sense to this

crazy world.”

“People can sometimes be quite smart,” Väinämöinen said and smiled. “Come,

I want to introduce you to one of the wise ones.”

Väinämöinen led Iki-Tiera to an agora, the market square of a small town. They

found a group of young students and in their midst, an old man dressed in a

white robe. The man was Pythagoras, a philosopher and a mathematician. A

heated debate seemed to have broken between those present.

“Väinämöinen,” Pythagoras exclaimed, “you have no idea how happy I am to

see you.”

“Pytha, old chap. What's going on? We could hear you all the way to the hills.”

The philosopher gave a small sigh. “I have just discovered that the Earth is

round, not flat as a pancake like these morons seem to think. I can prove the

matter in theory, but not in practice. Väinämöinen, you know the truth, but how

can I convince these fools?”

“Well, well, well,” Väinämöinen said. “Yes, obviously you're right. To prove it

you could start walking west. If you continue long enough without deviating

from the route, in time you will arrive at this very same square, but from the

east. Of course you would have to swim quite a lot and the trip could take

years to complete.”

After hearing Väinämöinen's words, the students burst out laughing. “That

grey-haired chap is even sillier than our teacher.”

Väinämöinen thought for a moment. “Actually there is another, faster way.

Tiera, take you spear and follow me. Look, you fools. See that big oak over

there? My friend will cast his spear in front of the oak to the west, and the

spear will reappear from the east.”

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

And so Iku-Tiera, the mighty spearman from Kalevala, thrust his spear

westward. The crowd stood waiting and when nothing happened, started to

ridicule the teacher and his learned friend. But soon, there was the spear,

flying speedily through the air and finally hitting the side of the great oak tree.

Pythagoras rejoiced. This theory had also been proven both theoretically and

empirically. If you draw a straight line from point A around the world, the line

will meet point A again. “Each of you will write down the theorem a hundred

times on your clay tablets by tomorrow morning.”

Content, Väinämöinen and Iku-Tiera continued their journey.

22. VÄINÄMÖINEN IN MESOPOTAMIA

In his youth Väinämöinen enjoyed wandering in the Middle East. He liked

watching the old empires rise and fall, the bloody battles, and the endless

scheming between the kings and the emperors. Since the times were restless

and the wars ongoing, Väinämöinen was often accompanied by his trusted

warriors Iku-Tiera and Lemminkäinen. Before long, however, Lemminkäinen

had to be excluded from the adventures, as the distant kingdoms started seeing

many new blond, blue-eyed children. And since many of these children were

born to the daughters or the wives of kings, feelings were hurt, although in

Väinämöinen's opinion the declining royal families should have been happy to

receive a drop or two of new blood.

Gilgamesh, King of Uruk, and his constant companion Enkidu, were among

Väinämöinen’s oldest friends. Together they experienced some amazing

adventures. Väinämöinen showed Gilgamesh the path to Tuonela and as

someone experienced in travelling to the Underworld gave him some valuable

advice. Gilgamesh was also there when the warriors robbed the Sampo

miracle machine from the Northland back to Kalevala.

When Gilgamesh found himself trapped in a very troubled love affair with the

divine Ishtar (in Kalevala known as Ilmatar) he came to Väinämöinen for

advice. Väinämöinen told Gilgamesh that he knew the heinous Ishtar-Ilmatar

maiden only too well. "Once, when we were swimming together, she dumped

me off her lap. Truly an evil woman. Do yourself a favour and keep away from

her." Gilgamesh followed Väinämöinen’s advice only to face the fury of an

enraged woman.

One time Gilgamesh and Väinämöinen made a bet on which of them would

sleep longer. Väinämöinen made a wager of a hundred squirrel skins and slept

a week longer than Gilgamesh. When he awoke, he found 100 beautifully

worked lion skins next to him.

"I wasn’t able to find any squirrels, but will lions do?" Yes, they did.

24. NOAH AND NIMROD

The Hebrew Noah had been given a very tight deadline for his shipbuilding

project. In order to finish the ark one time, Noah turned to Väinämöinen who

happened be an experienced boat builder. Väinämöinen and his brother

Ilmarinen were only too happy to help. Väinämöinen carved the bowsprit while

Ilmarinen forged the heavy anchor and chains. Then the brothers helped Noah

to bring all sorts of animals on board. Without Väinämöinen, there would be

no reindeer and polar bears alive today.

When the storm and the rainy years had passed, Väinämöinen also became

acquainted with Noah's son Haam and Haam's son Nimrod. Väinämöinen and

Nimrod hunted a lot together, and Väinämöinen invited Nimrod to fish in the

lakes of Kerimaa and Kalevala. Nimrod was very impressed by the old-growth

forests of Huosio, by the little secret lakes in Kerimaa, and the wilderness of

Lapland.

Nimrod was the King of Babylon, Erech, Accad and Calnea, and thus, in his

opinion, the ruler of the entire world. Väinämöinen reminded the King that he

had also seen other vast kingdoms and that Nimrod's lands only covered a very

small corner on the edge of the Earth. Nimrod was upset by the news, but soon

relented, as he had a great construction project in mind. He wanted to build a

pyramid that would tower all the way to the sky. Nimrod remembered his

grandfather Noah's ark, which the men from Kalevala had helped to build.

Reluctantly, Väinämöinen promised that his brother Ilmarinen would manage

the project. Väinämöinen himself would return to Kalevala, where he had some

unresolved issues with one Joukahainen.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

In a few years’ time Ilmarinen returned to Kalevala. He was angry. “That Nimrod

is one greedy jerk. At first everything went well. But then, the Babylon treasury

began to dwindle and Nimrod hired cheap labourers from foreign lands. Mere

farm boys, who did not know the local language, let alone construction

terminology! It was no good. When I ordered bricks to be brought, they brought

mortar. And when I used sign language to show them what I wanted, the mortar

had already dried. The different tribes kept drinking and fighting all night long.

During the day, things were no better since they couldn’t understand each other.

And when I quit and demanded to be paid, Nimrod said that there was nothing

to be paid as I had volunteered for the job. That man is no good. No good at all.”

Tower of Babel

“You’re right, brother," replied Väinämöinen, "and he’s not much of a

fisherman, either. He couldn’t even get the great Sylkynjärvi pike into the boat

although I was right there to give him advice.”

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

25. VÄINÄMÖINEN IN EDEN

It was pleasant for Väinämöinen to stop by the Garden of Eden while he was

travelling. It was wonderful place with the plants and animals. There were four

rivers flowing between plateaus and hills, the trees were carrying range of

different fruits and in the forests all the different species lived together in

harmony. Väinämöinen found the familiar cottage close to the stream.

- Hey Adam, are you home?

- Oh hello Väiski, here I am, Adam responded from the cottage

- What are you doing in there?

Adam and his wife Eva crawled out from the cottage. – We were just preparing

some fruit salad. Would you like to join us for a meal? Adam asked. Eva quickly

set the delicious looking fruit salad and a jug full of refreshing beverage on the

lawn.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Väinämöinen fancied greatly this young couple, who were spending fortunate

life in paradise. Adam and Eva diligently took care of their little garden site.

They were hard-working but a little simple. Väinämöinen often teased them

mildly.

- Tell me Adam, what year is it now? Väinämöinen asked.

It is the sixth day of tenth summer. Tomorrow we are spending holiday

because the lord is relaxing also.

- Yes, of course, Väinämöinen chuckled. Your lord had rough creation

work 10 years ago when the world was created. Has he been here

lately?

- No, last time he was here he only listed some unpleasant instructions

and demands and hasn’t been here since. Actually we build up this

cottage so that He wouldn’t notice us so easily.

- The fruit salad is very delicious, Adam. What did you put in here?

- It’s nice to hear you like it. It has variation of different fruits and berries,

bananas, oranges, dates, figs, strawberries, one piece of lemon and

then… there is this.

- But Adam, isn’t that just the one fruit the lord told you not to eat.

- Sssshhhhh Väiski …. It is, but when Eva cuts it in to the salad, the lord

won’t notice. It is very delicious.

- Well, that is none of my business, Väinämöinen uttered, and it is your

religion, but I’m guessing that nothing good is resulting from that.

- Why would you think that? In fact that fruit has some kind of special

magic. Now that we have been eating it with Eva for a couple of weeks,

we have been starting to feel something unique. We have become a lot

wiser. We have invented new things. I know you can light fire just by

using spells, but we learned that when you rub two dry wooden pieces

together long enough it will create a flame also. And then we have learnt

that Eva has that kind of little thing between her legs and I have this kind

of bigger thing and then we…

- Enough, enough, it is very wonderful that you have figured that out. You

will be discovering more every kind of fun things, but…

- Tell me, Adam. If it is now tenth year ongoing, then how you old do you

think I am?

- Funny thing, old man. You know, I have thought about it a lot. You have

to be younger than me, maybe something like nine, but I have to say,

you look extremely old. At least hundred years old, but that not possible.

I’m sorry, Väiski.

- I don’t mind Adam, I think I will continue my journey now.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

And so Väinämöinen left. As he walked towards east, he watched the beautiful

paradise and thought what a great place it is. Hopefully it remains as it is.

26. STORY ABOUT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ATLANTIS

The traditional enemy of Kalevala was the kingdom named Pohjola. In the very

beginning Pohjola was colonised by giants, of which the greatest were brothers

named Atlas and Ymir. Due to this later in some cultures Pohjola has also been

called with the name Atlantis.

After the reign of Atlas the giant had come to an end, the kingdom was ruled by

his daughter, Louhi, who was a beautiful and fresh witch. Väinämöinen tried to

enthusiastically woo the lady of Pohjola, even though she already had a harem

consisting of several dozens of husbands and even more lovers. These

husbands and lovers formed the feared armament of Pohjola which conducted

its raids on every land and sea.

Many suitors and princes arrive in Pohjola,

As long as the lady of Pohjola maintained her appearance young and blooming,

she didn’t pay any attention to the wooing of Väinämöinen although she did

admit his power and manhood. As the time had gone by Louhi got older and

she got appalling in the eyes of Väinämöinen. Instead the beautiful and cheerful

maids of the mansion started to get Väinämöinen’s attention. As a result Louhi

got angry and began to feel hatred towards Väinämöinen.

Page 75: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Pohjola was a distant island in the middle of a foggy sea. It was bare and poor

land to begin with. Its treasures were booties along with the beautiful daughters

of Louhi. The maidens were famous of their beauty by the whole world. The

kinds and warlords from everywhere visited to ask their hand in marriage. After

receiving dowry, Louhi has a habit of sending his armament to reclaim the

princess back with violence and offer her hand in marriage once again to the

next prince.

Despite these methods, Pohjola was poor and bare of culture for a long time.

The ambitious dreams of Louhi were to raise her kingdom to a high standard of

living and obtain the greatest wealth in the world. Louhi decided to accomplish

her plan by taking advantage of insatiable desire for women of Väinämöinen

and the hunger for love of men of Kalevala.

So once when the wise man Väinämöinen had arrived to the feast of Pohjola as

an uninvited guest, Louhi introduced to Väinämöinen her most beautiful

daughter who was curtained to sheer veils. “Old man Väinämöinen, the

prettiest daughter of mine I will give away to you only if you fulfil my request.”

Väinämöinen was drooling as he stared the girl with lust and promised to

complete any request. “Who do I have to kill?”, he asked. “You don’t have to kill

anyone. Bring you famous blacksmith brother here, crafter of the dome of the

sky Ilmarinen. Ilmarinen will build me Sampo the magic machine.” “And you are

not asking for more?” Asked Väinämöinen. “Of course I will bring my brother

Ilmarinen here and I promise that he will craft you whatever machine it is that

you ask for. He is very talented at things like that.”

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Instantly Väinämöinen rushed to his boat and began his sale toward Kalevala. It

was that time of the year when the winds were against him, but Väinämöinen

blew in his sails with so much might that the journey was fast even in headwind.

In Kalevala, Väinämöinen searched for his brother, Ilmarinen.

Greetings my brother, my precious growth partner

now we will depart to propose, to choose ourselves wives

You will forge a magic machine, make a lid many-coloured

Gifted we will be with daughters, as a payment ladies well-breasted

Väinämöinen didn’t have the nerves to inform his brother that there was only

one bride offered for marriage. He counted on that there would be more than

enough daughters in Pohjola. There must be someone for Ilmarinen also.

Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen sailed to Pohjola with the winds on their side. The

lady of Pohjola was already greeting them in the harbour.

- Blacksmith, forge me Sampo the magic machine. The kind of machine which

grinds golden coins from the first cone, grains from the second and salt from the

third. If you forge me a machine like that, you will get a daughter of mine as your

own.

“What about the partner promised for me?” Asked Väinämöinen in anger

“You old buck, you can go to there, to the shed and beg for love from the

maids”, answered Louhi, the evil lady of Pohjola.

Page 77: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Miracle machine Sampo grinds salt, grain and gold

And like that gave Louhi her daughter to Ilmarinen. Ilmarinen forged Sampo the

magic machine for Pohjola. Pohjola became a rich kingdom with that Sampo.

Ilmarinen educated the men of Pohjola to become skilled masons, architects

and engineers. He also built a pretentious palace to Pohjola with the help of

these men, as well as planted the forests and gardens and constructed the

pathways and ditched. In the greatest palace of all, there was the magic

machine Sampo carefully guarded. It ground treasures all day all night to the

chests of the lady of Pohjola. The masons and engineers formed a brotherhood

which had secret ceremonies and rituals. Later on this brotherhood was called

the Freemasons.

Page 78: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

The destruction of Atlantis

Afterwards Louhi forced her daughter to leave Ilmarinen and drove her

son-in-law away from Pohjola. Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen were furious for the

betrayal and bitter of losing the magic machine Sampo. The brothers called the

men of Kalevala and Kerimaa together for the military expedition against

Pohjola. This war was such a horrendous battle and destruction that by the end

of it the kingdom was non-existing. Ilmarinen broke the irrigation channels and

water pipes built by him so that the island, which was already called Atlantic,

ended up flooded and sank in to the depths of sea. The men loaded the magic

machine Sampo in to their boat and left for the journey back as pleased fellows.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Fighting of Sampo's ownership

The ferocious Louhi enchanted herself to become a big eagle and gathered

what was left of her armament on to her back. Louhi attacked the navy of

Kalevala and attempted to steal the magic machine Sampo back. During this

fierce battle the magic machine Sampo broke and sank in to the bottom of sea.

It still lays in there today. One of its cones is still working and continuously

27. THE BIRTH OF THE FREEMASONS

After the destruction of the Atlantis the professional construction men trained

by Ilmarinen scattered all over the continent, which was later referred as

Europe. Guild of the constructors grew a mysterious organization of the

Freemasons. The Freemasons build up big palaces and temples made out of

giant boulders. This time is nowadays called Megalith Age. The oldest

buildings and mighty lithospheres can be found in Britain, Ireland, France,

Malta, Turkish and India. The masons trained by Ilmarinen were also building

the pyramids in Egypt and temples in Middle and South America. The first

emperor of China, I Qin Shi Huangdi (秦始皇帝), hired the masons of the

Atlantis to supervise the construction work of the Great Wall of China.

28. AHMAD IBN FADLAN’S EXEDITIN TO RUSSIA AND KERIMAA

A famous Arab explorer Ahmad Ibn Fadlan conducted an expedition according

to the demands of Caliph Al Muqtadir to far north in the lands of Ruses and

Vends. Information of this journey was close to being disappeared for good, but

parts of the travelogue of Ahmed Fadlan were found in 1923 from the city of

Meshid in Iran. The travelogue was a sensation, since it included contemporary

information of time of the eastern Vikings and the ancient history of Russia. An

entertainment Hollywood movie “The 13th Warrior” (1999) was also made of the

expedition, where Antonio Banderas plays the leading role.

Pekka Nurminen, who investigates Kerimaa, found a ripped scroll during his trip

to an ancient city of Barn in Iran, which later on turned out to be a conclusion of

Ahmad Ibn Fadlan’s travelogue. From the travelogue it becomes clear that the

caliph Muqtadir had set the most important goal of the expedition to find the

mysterious kingdom of Kerimaa-Kalevala and to meet its famous king

Väinämöinen, if he still was alive and well. Old Persian lore tells that prophet

Zarathustra (Zoroaster) travelled amongst people and taught them good

things. It is told that he would have met wise man Väinämöinen during his

travels. The caliph wanted to know whether this meeting actually happened.

Ibn Fadlan tells:

When I was still with Ruses at the river of Volga I asked about the land of

Fenni's, which was called Kerimaa from the oldest of the tribe. I also asked

about the wise man Väinämöinen. They had so many stories and tales in their

memory that they shared them with me at the camp fire until the next morning.

They told me that Kerimaa is thousands of versts (an old Russian unit of

distance, about 1060 meters) away, but the journey will be worth all the troubles

and effort. The chieftain told that the king Väinämöinen is indeed still alive, but

was at the time very old, at least thousand or hundred thousand years old. No

one knew the age of Väinämöinen, but it has been told that Väinämöinen was

present in the very beginning and participated in the Creation.

The villagers told strange stories of Väinämöinen and about his amazing

journeys in distant lands. One of the most interesting ones was that at the dark

time of the year, Väinämöinen had an tendency to go to the outer boundary of

north and light up some bright dancing lights in the dark. This story fascinated

me greatly since the extraordinary light effect was sometimes seen even in the

Page 83: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

northern horizon of Baghdad. Latin’s called this phenomenon by the name

Aurora Borealis.

I told the chieftain that I had an order given by the caliph to visit Kerimaa. The

chieftain offered me 12 warriors as guides and rowers. We travelled along the

river by a narrow boat towards north. Time to time the boat had to be carried

over any obstacles. Finally we rowed over a big sea and after a couple of days

we arrived to the land of thousands lakes. We met the king Väinämöinen in a

humble cottage in small village. Väinämöinen was old indeed. He told me that

his time was coming to an end because people had abandoned their old

religions and turned to Christian or Islamic. I asked him, according to the

demand of the caliph Al Muqtadir, is it true that he had met the prophet

Zarathustra almost 2000 years ago.

Väinämöinen got excited in recalling his memories. He had met the prophet

Zarathustra when he had been returning from his trip to the kingdom of China.

At the time there were many kings in China who fought with each other.

Väinämöinen had discussed with Zarathustra for many days.

Väinämöinen had also noticed the good behaviour and honesty of Zarathustra.

Zarathustra seemed wise also because he wrote his own bizarre ideas down

for the future generations.

“You will become a significant man”, had Väinämöinen said to Zarathustra

when they finally separated.

I was so content after confirming the authenticity of the lore. Before leaving

back to home, I was fishing with Väinämöinen at several lakes and we got quite

a catch. The most delicious one was the red-fleshed fish which was cooked on

Page 84: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

a wide board with the camp fire by Väinämöinen. We also hunted some wild

animals. Väinämöinen knew how to orthodoxly butcher elks, reindeers and

other prey. We didn't eat nor hunt boar.

The time I spent in Kerimaa, was the happiest period of time in my whole life. I

wish to return there sometime in future.

This was the end of Ahmad Ibn Fadlan’s travelogue. Despite his wishes, he

29. THE DAWN OF TIME

Sometimes in those times that we nowadays refer to as the dawn of time, an

innocent maid Marjatta strolled on the lands of Kalevala. Marjatta was beautiful

and virtuous, the joy of her father, mother and brothers. Maid Marjatta’s

favourite recreation was berry and mushroom picking. She knew all the forests,

flatlands and mountains from Kerimaa to all the way to the Altai.

Once happened so, that during her autumn berry picking trip, Marjatta became

pregnant. Her father, mother and brothers got angry at her pregnancy and the

birth of her baby boy. Maid Marjatta was strictly interrogated and she was

pressed for an answer about the father’s identity. Marjatta was confused about

the situation and so terrified that she insisted that there was no father.

Lemminkäinen was the first one to be doubted as he was known charmer and

seducer of women, but Lemminkäinen strictly denied any involvement in the

birth of the child.

The Väinämöinen himself was called to decide the faith of Marjatta and her

child. Väinämöinen examined the child and trembled in shock. Without any

further interrogations, Väinämöinen ordered the child to be drowned in a

swamp. The people were frightened about the especially harsh sentence, but

the commissioners started to prepare the execution of the sentence.

At that time the newborn begun to speak with a clear child’s voice. The child

accused Väinämöinen about his own bad works, bloody raids, robberies and

thefts, oppressing and mocking of the weak, lewdness and harassment of

young women.

Kalevala poem 50 (a part):

Wainamoinen, old and faithful,

Carefully the child examined,

Gave this answer to his people:

"Since the child is but an outcast,

Born and cradled in a manger,

Since the berry is his father;

Let him lie upon the heather,

Let him sleep among the rushes,

Let him live upon the mountains;

Take the young child to the marshes,

Dash his head against the birch-tree."

Page 86: KERIMAA MYTHOLOGY 神话Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Then the child of Mariatta,

Only two weeks old, made answer:

"O, thou ancient Wainamoinen,

Son of Folly and Injustice,

Senseless hero of the Northland,

Falsely hast thou rendered judgment.

In thy years, for greater follies,

Greater sins and misdemeanors,

Thou wert not unjustly punished.

In thy former years of trouble,

30. THE LEGEND OF SANTA CLAUS

A great number of folk tales about the Creation exists. Some ancient epic songs

have been included in the Kalevala epic. According to Kalevala, the wiseman

Väinämöinen also took part in the creation of the world. Väinämöinen was a

sagacious magician and lord, who ruled the indigenous peoples for

thousands of years.

But when Christianity started spreading throughout the world and reached

even the remote Northern areas, the wiseman Väinämöinen concluded that his

time had ended and withdrew from ruling the world. But he gave a promise to

return and help people should they need his assistance.

(Kalevala, poem 50. See)

It so fell out that in the course of time the world became full with perils and ills.

Troubles and wars, poverty and hunger, unhappy families and orphan children

were everywhere. In the gloomy and dark Middle Ages small children were

forced to work in coal mines, at factories and even as the cleaners of hot

furnaces.

Then old Väinämöinen saw that he has to help people once more. At that time

Väinämöinen lived in the faraway Lapland, on the Korvatunturi bald mountain.

From its top he could see great desolation prevailing in the world. So,

Väinämöinen put on a red coat, put in harness his reindeer and went out to

distribute gifts among all children of the world. Since then, he carried out this

voyage every Christmas and therefore was called Father Christmas, or Santa

Claus.

31. Santa Claus Hires Helpers

When Väinämöinen started his new career as the Santa Claus he had to solve many

types of problems. Even though he was a wizard and a wise man, the Santa Claus's field

was so vast that in the beginning he could not get everything done as he wanted. For he

had to deliver presents to all the children in the world. The first century went by

practicing. There were a lot issues. The variety of gifts was narrow and he could not

make it to all the countries and to every family in time.

Soon enough, Santa understood that he needs helpers and he needs a lot of them. But

where to find reliable helpers? Santa interviewed and hired for probation a few people

who were known to be reputable. After a few painful training weeks it became obvious

that humans would not fit as helpers. Humans were too big, lazy, slow and clumsy. In

addition, humans started to demand raises, evening and night increases, doubles for

Christmas day, per diem allowances, kilometer allowances, vacation allowances and all

sorts of other conditions. The Santa's traditional sledge would not do for the humans

and they demanded a more streamlined, turbocharged and handsomely decorated

vehicle.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

Santa Claus gave up recruiting humans. He turned to familiar forest animals. The

animals were excited about the offered task and were not as importunate as humans.

Soon enough, other issues arose with the animals. Not one animal was able to work in

Santa Claus's gift factory nor produce even the simples toy. Most of the animals were

too weak to lift or carry gifts. Other animals would not like to travel to distant lands. In

the end, Santa Claus accepted only th reindeer as his helper. Santa had to rule out all the

other animals.

What now? Where could he get more helpers? Santa remembered that before the

humans arrived, many creatures resembling humans lived in the forests and mountains

of Kalevala. In the good old times, over and under the earth, goblins, giants, dwarfs,

elves, gnomes, trolls, devils and other miraculous beings. Santa Claus started to look

for those beings. Giants, gnomes, snow men, trolls, goblins and many others had gone

extinct as humans had expanded to nearly everywhere. It was not so trivial anymore.

Santa Claus remembered, that in his youth, keris, also known as dwarfs, lived in the

Kalevala-Kerimaa area. Santa Claus returned to his old home, Kerimaa, and found the

last keri communities from Kerimaa's forests and Lake Paasvesi's coasts. Santa arrived

with his work proposals at a great time. Unemployment among the dwarfs was a huge

issues. Some of the dwarfs had gotten jobs at vagabond circuses, but there they had to

deal with bad treatment and constant mocking. The dwarfs got excited about Santa's

proposal. They managed the Santa's training easily. Though many of the dwarfs got too

excited and caused all sorts of mishaps. Santa named his new helpers as gnomes.

Marvelous Adventures of Väinämöinen ...

So the dwarfs became gnomes and Santa's helpers. Most of them wanted to work in

Santa's toy and clothes factories, but some of the gnomes trained as secret spies. The

spy gnomes' mission was to observe children all around the world. The gnomes

composed reports for Santa about nice and naughty children. With a certain factor this

decided how many presents they got in Christmas.
