Pastoral PonderingsPastoral PonderingsPastoral PonderingsPastoral Ponderings
Have you ever considered a career as a prophet? Long hours, lile pay, lost friends. Maybe even a threat on your life now and then.
Well, if you’re bapzed, you’ve already been pre-selected for the posion.
Most of us probably won’t experience this sort of opposion in our daily discipleship, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t have a prophec role to play as we witness to God’s work in the world. What exactly do we even mean by prophets and prophecy? In the popular imaginaon, we probably think of Gandalf or Dumbledore or Yoda, filled with arcane knowledge, and dispensing sage advice to their followers. Or perhaps we remember Nostradamus and his enigmac predicons of future calamies.
These images of prophecy are a distoron of the Biblical version. Someone once said that the job descripon for a prophet is to “Comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.” This is a concise and clever way of saying that there are two sides to the prophet’s ministry. The prophet’s foremost task is to accurately and compellingly speak God’s word to people. So we’ll see variaons on the story of Jeremiah, that “the word of the Lord came to me…” Next week we’ll hear a similar calling from Isaiah’s experience.
In conveying God’s message, there is a serious responsibility for the prophet to not mince words. Many kings and rulers, down to our very day, have had “court prophets” – advisors who generally told them what they wanted to hear. It’s an easy way to make a living, affirming your boss at every opportunity. But it’s the Old Testament prophets we remember, who did not simply fall under the spell of wealth and influence. These were not “yes men”, but individuals who challenged powerful people to live by the standards to which God holds those in authority. O8en they elaborated on the consequences of ignoring those standards.
On the flip side, there is the prophet’s funcon as a messenger of God’s love and mercy, especially to the poor and vulnerable. Here the prophet proclaims the tender compassion that God has for His People, His willingness to forgive, and His desire to secure our salvaon. It’s what Jesus means by proclaiming good news to the poor, or what Paul gets at with his moving descripon of what love truly entails.
When Jesus steps up as a prophet in today’s Gospel, His audience turns from admiraon to fury in a few moments. He jars them out of their complacency and familiarity, reminding them that they don’t have a monopoly on God’s favor, just because they seem to follow the rules.
How does Jesus challenge me through modern-day prophets? Pope Francis, for example, calls us to pay parcular aenon to those on the margins – socially, economically, spiritually. He challenges us to see others as God sees them, not with categories or labels, but as persons made in His image. The Holy Father has made God’s mercy a central theme of his papacy, but it doesn’t mean much if we don’t peel back the layers of our heart and reflect on why we need divine mercy in the first place. As we march toward Lent, it will be a good me to pay aenon to prophecy, past and present, and to embrace our job as prophets, as well.
-Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

Grace Notes
Parts of the Mass During the next few weeks this mul-part series
on the Catholic Mass, wrien by Elizabeth Harrington, will occupy Grace Notes.
Homily - The readings from scripture at Mass are followed by a homily. The word comes from the Lan homilia, meaning ‘conversaon’. The homily has its origins in the Jewish synagogue service where, a8er the readings from the Law and the Prophets, an explanaon of their meaning was given by one of those present. A homily was been part of the Church’s liturgy since the beginning but during the Middle Ages it changed from a breaking-open of the scriptures to an instrucon on Catholic doctrine or morals, i.e., a sermon. The Second Vacan Council restored the homily as an integral part of the liturgy, stang that ‘the homily is to be highly esteemed as part of the liturgy itself’. The introducon to the Leconary says that the homily must be ‘truly the fruit of meditaon, carefully prepared, neither too long nor too short, and suited to all those present, even children and the uneducated’. Like the readings at Mass, the homily is a two-way process. The preacher prepares and delivers the homily but members of the assembly play their part by listening aenvely to the readings and to the words of the preacher, keeping an open mind to the insights which are being presented, and applying them to their own personal circumstances. The homily is followed by a short silence.
Creed - On Sundays and solemnies we respond to the word of God by recing the Profession of Faith or Creed, a statement of the fundamentals of the Chrisan faith. In early Chrisanity, the Profession of Faith was primarily associated with bapsm. The Renewal of Bapsmal Promises which replaces the Creed at the Easter Vigil has the same queson/answer format that was used for catechumens at their bapsm. The Profession of Faith first became part of the Mass in the late 5th century as a safeguard against heresy. A different creed cannot be substuted for the two approved versions – the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds – because it expresses the foundaonal belief of the whole Church, not only of the people gathered at a parcular me and place. The tradional creeds have a long history and their texts have been carefully worded over the course of many Church councils to express Chrisan faith accurately. It is important, however, to keep in mind that proclaiming the Creed at Mass is not about recing a long list of what we believe but rather a vibrant glorificaon of God, and of God’s love for us. Its structure, its every word, is a proclamaon of God’s goodness. As a communal prayer, the profession of faith is said as one voice by all the people. It needs to have a certain pace and rhythm to be an effecve communal statement. Like singers in a choir, members of the assembly need to listen to each other and keep together when proclaiming the creed and other communal prayers.

Caring for Our Parish Family Beyond These Four Walls
Belonging to St. Gabriel Parish usually means gathering with us for weekly worship. However, some of our parish family members are confined to their homes, reside in assisted living, or may be in the hospital. We want to remember them in prayer, keep them connected, and be present to them with the love of God and community. Please help our sisters and brothers by nofying the parish office if a loved one (or friend or neighbor) is ill, homebound, or otherwise in need. Pastoral staff or Care Ministers can visit, bring Holy Communion, and offer support. We respect confidenality.

MASS INTENTIONS: Our Mass spend calendar
for 2019 has many daily Masses available.
Having a Mass said in memory of a loved one is a
beauful remembrance. Due to high demand in the past, we
needed to limit the number of Masses said in memory of
one person. Now we only limit weekend/holy day Masses to
two per year per person, but weekday Masses are open to
request. Please contact the parish office if you would like to
schedule a Mass in memory of your loved one.
