March 1st Movement
• March 1st = Emperor’s funeral• People from all parts of Korea came to Seoul
to mourn his death • Great chance to start a movement into action
since a lot of people were there• Decided to get into action on March 1st
(Saturday)
Significance
• Still celebrated till today
ㄴ On March 1st, it is a holiday for Korea
ㄴ Some people put the flag on their window
ㄴ siren rings at 10 in the morning, all of the people need pray for
the brave people
• First to become one and fight

• Announcements telling about the movement
• 2 o’clock Seoul was full of people waiting
• Students couldn’t wait any more
• Went to persuade them to go to the park
quickly
Why Remain At the Restaurant?
• People might lose control and get violent
• Movement wouldn’t give them independence
• Didn’t believe the power of nation
• Help from strong countries was necessary

• January 8th, 1932 at 11:45 am; people gathered in front of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department
• Emperor’s parade• He waited to throw the bomb at the Emperor• Misunderstood and threw at the 2nd carriage
when the Emperor was on the 1st one• Failed but China was astonished by this event
Yun Bong-Gil
• April 29th, 1932; a ceremony celebrating the Japanese Emperor’s birthday
• Shanghai Hongkou Park (Luxun Park)• Disguised bombs as lunch box & water bottle• Serious injuries and some died• China was deeply touched • Starting point; China collaborating with Korea

• August 9th 1936; 11th Olympic in Berlin• Korean athletes had to attend as Japanese• Gi-Jeong Son won the gold in marathon• Seng-Lyong Nam wong the bronze• 2 Korean newspaper erased the Japanese flag
on the athletes’ chest and published • Japan banned the 2 companies• people who were related were imprisoned
West Great Gate Prison
• Jail that Japanese Empire built during Japanese Occupation in Seoul
• Became West Great Gate Prison museum• Built mainly to imprison activists who worked
for Independence• Conditions were very poor• Tortured
