On Aug. 26, 1920, women in the United States fi nally earned the right to vote. The annual celebration of that milestone is called Women’s Equality Day, and FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies will commemorate the 90th anniversary of women’s suffrage today from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Boca campus Student Union. FAU President Mary Jane Saunders and U.S. Representative Ted Deutch will speak, the movie Iron Jawed Angels will be screened, and everyone is encouraged to dress in white and purple – just as the suffragists did. If you’re not yet an A-plus fan, here’s a short course that will catch you up...

British Petroleum may have finally plugged up the worst oil spill in United States history, but now the question is: How bad was the damage?

Helping to discover the answers will be FAU researchers.

BP has given grant money to a public-private marine research group called The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FOI), which in turn received 233 proposals from around the state.

Some of those proposals came from FAU, and the FOI chose FAU to spearhead three projects and collaborate on 27 others. They range from investigating the effect of the Deepwater Horizon oil and dispersants on reefs and salt marshes to examining how coastal and marine food webs, from plankton to sharks, have fared in the disaster.

“To address an environmental crisis of this magnitude requires the combined expertise and resources of many researchers and scientists across the state, nation, and globe,” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. “We are collaborating with our colleagues across the state to assist with this national effort in response to the oil spill and its aftermath.

Research on the projects involves FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

“We will be good stewards of these funds so that we can leverage the research capacity of the experts and assets amid our universities,” said State University System Chancellor Frank T. Brogan, who was FAU president before Saunders. “I look forward to the collaboration that will be necessary to assist the needs of the state and its agencies, which are depending on this scientific data as stakeholders in the state’s response efforts.”

FAU is a member of the Oil Spill Academic Task Force – which Brogan established.

If you’ve gone to any FAU events since school started you’ve probably met Mike Burdman. If not, you most likely heard him.

The graduate student has been cheering for the Owls on and off the fi eld since 2006.

“My life is school, work and FAU,” he says with a smile. “I spend my free time at FAU events – I just love FAU.”

For Burdman, “work” is actually on campus, too. He’s the graduate assistant for the Alumni Center, serving as the adviser to the Student Alumni Association, the student ambassadors, and FAU’s spirit group the prOWLers.

He’s also the unoffi cial man behind the fall bonfi re. In fact, FAU even made an offi cial poster with his photo to promote the annual event.

So, where did all the spirit come from? The football fi eld – the Superdome, to be exact.

“I was always a football fan, but I really started getting into the school spirit after New Orleans,” Burdman

says, reminiscing about the Owls’ 44-27 win over the Memphis

was just such a sense of sheer pride we felt that day.”

After the bowl game win in 2007, Burdman says he saw the power of school spirit and the effect it had on the university.

“The spirit took over everybody in New Orleans,” he says, recalling chanting the FAU fi ght song down Bourbon Street. “I wanted everyone to feel the way we did in New Orleans all the time.”

Once he got home from Louisiana, Burdman said he got more active in Student Government and on-campus clubs and “just kept gathering more responsibilities along the way.”

His thoughts on the Owls this year: “They are underrated, I think they will be a lot better than people think they will be. I’m worried about the O-line because they are either new or injured, but I think the team has everything to prove and nothing to loose.”

One of the perks of being so involved: “I’m friends with a lot of the current and former players. I talked to Rusty [Smith, former quarterback] the other night after his preseason game with the Tennessee Titans.”

Art fi lms are coming to Boca Raton in October, when FAU opens a new movie complex that features four 50-seat theaters and a European-style cafe serving gourmet food, specialty coffee, beer, and wine. Partnering with a private company called Living Room Theaters Inc., the $3 million theaters will be used by FAU’s fi lm study program by day – and by the public at night and on weekends, when the theaters will show a full schedule of foreign, classic, and indie fi lms. “Not only will the theaters help our students and enhance our fi lm studies program, but the new venture will help build fi lm culture in this area,” said Manjunath Pendakur, dean of the Dorothy F. surrendered a whopping 453.2 yards per game. Good news: Coach Schnellenberger replaced his defensive coordinator, and nine of 11 starters return.

2 Will the offenSe Be RuStY Wihtout SMith? Bad news: While

the defense will return most of its starters, the offense won’t – eight are gone, including the entire offensive line and the best Owl ever in QB Rusty Smith. Good news: QB Jeff Van Camp played well filling in for Smith last year, and RB Alfred Morris can motor.

3Will the teAM Win MoRe gAMeS thAn lASt YeAR? Bad news:

Beating Texas, Michigan State, or USF is a tall order, and a total of eight games are on the road. Good news: The Owls get a week off before conference play, and after four straight Top 3 finishes, they aren’t afraid of any Sun Belt team.

THE STARSBesides Coach Schnellenberger, these are the three big names you need to know this year: Quarterback Jeff van Camp replaces the popular Rusty Smith. Running back Alfred Morris has already set season records for most rushing touchdowns (11) and per-game average (116 yards). Strong Safety Marcus Bartels was the team’s top defensive player last year.

THE BIG GAMESEven the most casual FAU football fan needs to know about – and watch – these important games...

SEPT 11: Network TV enemyThe Owls travel to Michigan State to battle the Spartans, a football powerhouse. This noon game in Detroit’s Ford Field will be aired on ESPNU – one of only two for the Owls this season.

SEPT 25: First home gameDue to scheduling quirks, only four of FAU’s 12 games are at home. The first is a biggie: Sun Belt Conference rivals North Texas at 7 p.m.

OCT 2: Cross-state rivalryThe University of South Florida has a four-year head start on FAU’s football

program and has been ranked in the Top 25 before. This TV game (Bright House Sports Network) will measure how far FAU has come – or has to go.

OCT 30: Homecoming gameThe Owls will face cross-town rival Florida International University. Besides the Homecoming Court ceremony, expect fans decked out in Halloween costumes. Last year, there was a costume contest before the game.

DEC 4: Only TV home gameConference rival Troy visits Lockhart – along with ESPNU. This 2 p.m. game is your chance to get on network TV when the camera pans the crowd. This home game will have the biggest turnout and most collegiate feel – at least until the on-campus stadium opens.

The Office of Alumni Relations seeks nominees for its honorary leadership society for alumni. Called the Parliament of OWLS, it stands for “Older Wiser LeaderS.” If you know a current student leader who’s recently graduated or is planning to graduate in December, you can nominate them. Winners are inducted during Homecoming week and are honored with a commemorative pin of a burrowing owl feather – cast in gold. Deadline for nomiantions is Friday, Oct. 1. Questions? Last year, FAU installed special up-close parking spaces on the Boca campus for students, faculty, and staff who carpool an average of two days a week. So far, more than 100 carpool groups have registered, so now the program is being expanded to the Davie and downtown Fort Lauderdale campuses. Visit www.get2fau.com for details.

If you’re an FAU student or employee who hasn’t signed up yet for a parking decal, better do it now. Online registration started this week, and if you wait, it could take a while for your decal to arrive in the mail.
