Black Friday – The day after Thanksgiving has been dubbed one of the busiest shopping days of the year. It is called Black Friday because traditionally it was the first time during the year that retailers would turn a profit (go from red to black). Several retailers offer special deals and discounts to entice shoppers into their stores. Many consumers line up at night to be the first inside the store when the doors open early on Friday morning. Retailers used to open their doors as early as 6a.m, but opening hours have crept up to 5a.m and even 4a.m in some cities.

While they used to be separate shopping days, Cyber Monday and Black Friday have now merged to become one mega shopping weekend for merchants, offering discounts and promotions that go all weekend long.

Korea Grand Sale is considered the ‘Korean Black Friday’, except

As this sale is part of an initiative to promote tourism, special discounts (up to 70% off) are offered to foreign visitors. The sale period varies every year. The Korea Grand Sale is held from the 1st to the 31st of October in 2016.

One down side, with some brands, is that when you buy in small amounts, the sales staff at Myeongdong might be less patient and generous.

• Luxury brands - Cheongdamdong is the “Champs-Elyses” of Seoul. The streets are usually fairly empty and very clean. They are lined with exquisite restaurants, top-of-the-line hair salons, high-end galleries, and luxury brand boutiques, such as LV, FENDI, CHANEL and PRADA. The imported luxury brand boutiques and major designer boutiques are mostly located between Galleria East and Cheongdamdong intersection. If you visit this area at the right time, you could get to buy luxury brand items for discount prices.
