ABOUT THE VIETNAMESE ASSOCIATION, TORONTO (VAT)

Established in 1972 as a fraternal organization and incorporated in 1979 as a non-profit charitable organization, VAT has the following Mission Statements:

• To provide settlement and adaptation services to immigrants and help them integrate and participate successfully in Canadian society.

• To promote mutual understanding, tolerance and racial harmony among ethno-cultural communities. • To work for the promotion and preservation of the Vietnamese heritage and culture, and for the

enrichment of multiculturalism in Canada.

Dear members, On the occasion of the Annual General Meeting, we would like to express our gratitude to V.A.T. members and the community members for their many contributions and support. We would also like to thank those who were able to attend and support the events that have been organized, particularly the 2016 Tết Bính Thân Festival. We are happy to report that VAT continues to be successful and has expanded its events and services. We are also happy to report that the 2016 Tet Festival had a record number of participating associations and organizations. Also, I would like to proudly report that more than two thirds of our volunteers this year Tet Festival were second or third generation Vietnamese-Canadians. This is important because it communicates our heritage, traditions and symbols of the Free Vietnamese Community to future generations. We believe if future generations are able to understand the value of freedom and the sacrifice of their ancestors for liberty, they will be able to effectively maintain our precious heritage and symbols; including the Heritage and Freedom Flag. MESSAGE FROM VAT PRESIDENT


Executive Committee

• President: Phat Nguyen Phat Nguyen graduated from the ARVN Infantry Officer Corps in 1974 and worked within administration and logistics. He left Vietnam and arrived in Toronto in 1982 as part of the Boat People refugees. Since 1988, he has been working for the City of Toronto and has been an active member within the Vietnamese Community in Toronto. He was the External V.P. for The Elderly Vietnamese Association of Toronto and was chief executive member of the Former Thu Duc Officer Cadets Association of Ontario.

• Vice-President of External Affairs: Dr. Kien Le, M.D. He was schooled at the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science for two years and subsequently trained at the Faculty of Medicine for nine years and further sharpened by an additional surgical year at UCLA. He served for two years as President of The University of Toronto Vietnamese Student Association. He also served the Canadian natives in Northern Ontario, then a tour in the White Head camps in Hong Kong, infamous for detaining hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese boat people forced to return to Vietnam. He also worked in California and New York, and has returned home to Toronto. At this time he has submerged himself into his role as “Lang Duong Lao”- The Golden Village’s VP External Affairs, in the drive to construct a much needed multi-facetted senior residence for the Vietnamese-Canadian elderly in the GTA and vicinities.

• Vice-President of Internal Affairs: PhaNguyen, B.Sc. Former Settlement Counsellor at Ontario Welcome House, School social worker at Toronto District School Board. Currently Vice-President of Parkdale Intercultural Association, President of Twinkle Star Non-profit home child care. Recipient of 15-year volunteer services award in 1992, 25-yearvolunteer services award in 2002, Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism in Ontario in 2005, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Current status: Retired.

• Treasurer: Ha Nguyen

Harry has spent his career in finance and accounting fields of the private sectors in both Montreal and Toronto areas at all levels of the organization. Harry was the Chief Financial and organizing member of the Kinh-Thuong Alumni Reunion in Toronto 2006. A low key approach but a firm decision maker, he was active with the Vietnamese student association while studying toward his degree in Sir George Williams Campus, Concordia University 1980. Harry is now self employed and taking his times in volunteer works and personal hobbies.

• Secretary General: Tan Nguyen Tan Nguyen was a former member of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). At the refugee camp in Pulau Bidong in Malaysia, he was appointed Chief of Security to help maintaining the orderly processing of refugees for resettlement in other countries. He was also appointed Head of Section 9 of the Baataan Refugee Camp in the Philippines for taking care of its administration duties. Tan Nguyen was former President of the ARVN Veterans Association of Ontario, former Vice-President of ARVN Veterans Association of Canada, and is the current President of the Committee for Democracy in Vietnam. For his long standing community work, Tan Nguyen has received numerous commendations, including from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Senator Hai Ngo. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

• Khang Nguyen, B.Com.

Graduated in 2007 from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management (ITM), and graduated in 2003 from Seneca College with Diploma in Business Computer Systems. Currently working at Transportaction, Leasing Services as a Business Systems Analyst.Currently serving as Board member of Vietnamese Association, Toronto. Acting Community Representative on the Asian Pacific Community Consultative Council for the Toronto Police Services. President of the United Vietnamese Student Associations, Ontario (2009-2011).Current occupation: Vehicle Maintenance Administrator/Process Analyst at TLS Fleet Management.

• Julia Le, B. A. Julia Tuong Vi Le graduated in 2014 with an Honours in Bachelor of Arts degree at Wilfrid Laurier University studying law and political science. She is a highly driven and engaged volunteer with the community and has helped organize numerous events to promote youth civic engagement. She is the External Vice President for Vietnamese Canadian Voters and Advocacy Association, Vice President of Social Media for the Young Professionals (MCBA) and a Co-Chair of the Western GTA Summit Mississauga Connects. She hopes to be a strong voice for females and have played an active role at Look Good Feel Better, an association that helps women face cancer with confidence while nurturing hope. Julia believes her knowledge and expertise in government relations can be readily transferred to her leadership role within VAT. As a second generation Vietnamese Canadian, Julia looks forward to working with the team to promote more youths like her, to help the Vietnamese community. Current occupation: Support Services Coordinator at Citizenship and Immigration of Canada and Creative Director of Mext Solutions.

• Le Luong, B.A. Le is a business professional with more than 15 years of experience in marketing and sales strategy, event and project management, business development, corporate fundraising. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at York University. As an entrepreneur, Le is a Managing Director of Goals Business Solutions, a management consulting company and Founder of GOALS Services, a consulting company that provides guardianship, mentorship and settlement assistance for international students and families. She currently sits as an Events Coordinator on the Executive Council of the CITT Toronto Area Council, and is the Vice-President of External Affairs at the Vietnamese Association, Toronto. Le has worked in the private and public sectors, and has implemented many successful projects for private businesses, non-profit organizations, charities, governments. In 2012, Le was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her dedication and community involvement.

• Molly Luu, B. Com., J.D. Molly Luu is a lawyer, practising commercial litigation. She has experience representing clients involved in disputes relating to contracts, insolvency and bankruptcy, and construction matters. She routinely represents clients in motions, applications, and trials before the Superior Court of Justice (including Bankruptcy Court and the Commercial List). Prior to joining Speigel Nichols Fox LLP, Molly completed her articles at a national law firm located in downtown Toronto. During that time, Molly worked on mid-market mergers and acquisitions and IPO transactions, in addition to high-profile commercial litigation files. Molly subsequently spent a year as a judicial law clerk where she worked closely with the judges of the Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. In this role, Molly gained invaluable insight into the inner workings of the Court system.


Subsequent to her clerkship, Molly joined Speigel Nichols Fox LLP as an associate. Molly has become particularly interested in insolvency and creditors’ rights litigation, as well as litigation emanating from small and mid-size business ventures.

• Nguyen Thanh Nguyen, B. Eng. Graduated as an Electrical Engineer in 1970 at the Electrical Engineering School of the Phu Tho National Technical Centre in Vietnam. After graduation, he became lecturer at the same school for 12 years, until 1982 when he immigrated to Canada. From 1984 he worked for Panasonic Canada Inc. as a specialist in broadcast and security products for 24 years, until his retirement in 2008.

• Thanh Tam Tran SBTN Anchor/Reporter/Talkshow Host/ Scriptwriter for the last 5 years. She has covered stories from the local community events/festivals such as the biggest Vietnamese Tet Festival in North America with the appearance of the honorable Prime Minister Stephen Harper to international events such as Help Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Phillipines.Thanh Tam is also SBTN Canada producer from 2014.

• Tho Pham, B.Sc., B.Tech Graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sciences: Life Sciences and in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology: Process Automation at McMaster University. Former President of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2012-2013), Founder/Camp Master of First Step Camp (2012), Vice President of the Vietnamese Canadian Federation (2012-2013), Vice President External of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2011-2012), Assistant Camp Master of Len Duong Leadership Camp (2009), President of the McMaster Vietnamese Student Association (2004-2006). Current occupation: Production Supervisor at Estee Lauder Cosmetics Ltd.

• Tom Tang, C.A. A chartered accountant with a wide range of business and community work experiences. Professionally, Tom held numerous senior roles within a wide spectrum of organization, including Ernst & Young LLP, Loblaw Companies Ltd. and was recently a Senior Manager with Barrick Gold Corporation. Previous Volunteers involvement includes Board of Director and Treasurer of Ontario Museum Association, Board of Director and Volunteer Outreach for Asian Community Aids Services, Board of Director of York Community Services. Current occupation: Accountant.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES IN 2015-16 / SINH HOẠT CỘNG ĐỒNG 2015-16

The Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT) and the Elderly Vietnamese Association, Toronto (EVAT) jointly organized the community summer picnic on August 9 at High Park as an opportunity for the community to meet and have conversations. The participants enjoyed Vietnamese foods, BBQ, children games... The event took place amid beautiful scenery on a day of great weather had about 800 attendees / HNV Toronto và Hội Cao Niên VN Toronto đồng tổ chức buổi picnic cộng đồng mùa hè ngày 9 tháng 8 tại High Park để đồng hương có dịp gặp gỡ, sinh hoạt chung. Những người tham dự thưởng thức thức ăn Việt, BBQ, xem biểu diễn võ thuật cổ truyền, tham gia

trò chơi trẻ em… Buổi sinh hoạt tại khung cảnh đẹp trong ngày có thời tiết ấm áp có khoảng 800 người tham dự.


AUGUST 16 – FUSION OF TASTE FESTIVAL

For the first time, VAT participated in the Fusion of Taste Festival organized by the Albion Islington Square BIA in Etobicoke. VAT had an information table to promote its free settlement services to new immigrants. Đây là lần đầu tiên HNV Toronto tham dự triển lãm tại Lễ Hội Fusion of Taste do Albion Islington Square BIA tổ chức tại Etobicoke. HNV Toronto có một bàn thông tin để phổ biến dịch vụ định cư miễn phí cho di dân mới đến. AUGUST 21 / 23 - FIRST STEP CAMP - TRẠI HÈ

AUGUST 23 – TASTE OF THE HILL

VAT organized the First Step Camp 2015 with the theme “Make It Count” for high school students at Camp Everton, ON. The First Step Camp creates a favourable environment for students to discuss their future aspiration, learn leadership skills, make friends, and find out more about the Vietnamese culture and history. HNV Toronto đã tổ chức Trại Hè First Step 2015 với chủ đề “Make It Count” cho các em học sinh trung học tại Camp Everton, ON. Trại Hè First Step tạo điều kiện và giúp đỡ các em thảo luận về sự nghiệp của mình trong tương lai, dạy các em chức năng lãnh đạo, tạo môi trường lành mạnh cho các em kết nối bạn bè, và khuyến khích các em học hỏi thêm về văn hóa và lịch sử Việt Nam.

AUGUST 23 – TASTE OF THE HILL For the first time, VAT participated in the Taste of the Hill Multicultural Festival organized by the City of Richmond Hill at Richmond Green Park. VAT had a booth to display cultural items and to promote its free settlement services to new immigrants. A traditional dance performed by a young dancer was much applauded. VAT and other community groups organized the Mid-Autum Festival for children and families right on the Lunar date of 15th of August which had full Autumn moon. The event at the Community Hall of St. James Cathedral aimed to help the young generation to preserve the Vietnamese tradition and culture, with lanterns, moon cakes and lion dance. There were also balloon sculpture, face painting and performances. This Mid Autumn festival was attended by Senator Thanh Hai Ngo; Ms. Cristina Martins, MPP for Davenport; Councillor Chin Lee and representative for Councillor Giorgio Mammolity HNV Toronto phối hợp với các hội đoàn trong cộng đồng đã tổ chức Tết Trung Thu cho các em thiếu nhi và gia đình đúng vào Ngày Rằm tháng Tám âm lịch tại Hội Trường Nhà Thờ St. James. Lễ hội này nhằm giúp các em giữ gìn truyền thống và văn hóa Việt Nam, với lồng đèn, bánh trung thu, và xem múa lân. Ngoài ra còn có làm bong bong nghệ thuật, vẻ mặt và văn nghệ. Tết Trung Thu năm nay có sự tham dự của Thương Nghị Sĩ Ngô Thanh Hải, Dân Biểu Tỉnh Bang Ontario Bà Cristina Martins; Nghị Viên Chin Lee và Đại diên Nghị Viên Giorgio Mammolity.

The Remembrance Day Ceremony was organized by VAT and other community groups on Sunday November 8 at the Domenico Di Luca Community Centre under the sponsorship of Emery Village Business Improvement Area. Lễ Tưởng Niệm Chiến Sĩ Trận Vong do HNV Toronto cùng với các hội đoàn tổ chức ngày Chủ Nhật 8 tháng 11 tại Trung Tâm Cộng Đồng Dome-nico Di Luca với sự bảo trợ của Emery Village Business Improvement Area.

December 13 – VAT organized a Christmas Gift-Giving celebration for the community with the support of CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Besides taking photos with Santa Claus, there were children games and activities, food, and the arts of making balloon sculpture provided by volunteers from Help Kids To School Foundation. It was a successful event with over 400 happy attendees. / HNV tổ chức buổi phát quà Giáng Sinh cho trẻ em với sự hỗ trợ của CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Ngoài cơ hội chụp ảnh lưu niệm với Santa Claus, còn có trò chơi trẻ em, thực phẩm, và nghệ thuật làm hình tượng bong bóng do thiện nguyện viên của HelpKidsToSchool Foundation thực hiện. LUNAR NEW YEAR (TET) FESTIVAL 2016 / HỘI CHỢ TẾT BÍNH THÂN On Saturday January 16, 2016, the Vietnamese Association Toronto and other community organizations in GTA have organized successfully the Year of the Monkey Tet Festival at International Centre, with the participation of over 7,000 visitors. This is the largest annual festival of the Vietnamese community in Canada. Ngày thứ Bảy 16 tháng 1, 2016, Hội Người Việt Toronto và các hội đoàn tại vùng GTA đã tổ chức thành công Hội Chợ Tết Bính Thân tại International Centre với sự tham dự trên 7,000 khách. Đây là lễ hội hàng năm lớn nhất của cộng đồng người Việt tại Canada.

TRUYỀN THỐNG TẾT / TET TRADITION Làng Việt Nam là đặc điểm của HCT hàng năm, nơi quy tụ các sinh hoạt truyền thống và thu hút đông khách – The Vietnam Village is the focus of traditional activities of the annual Tet Festival and attracts many visitors.


TET EXHIBITS / TRIỂN LÃM TẾT

TET FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES / VĂN NGHỆ HỘI CHỢ TẾT Cultural performances are always attractions at the Tet Festivals. Performers are from different generations, from experienced professionals to younger apprentices and learners who use the Tet Festival as an opportunity to practice before a live audience. This is the transfer of cultural knowledge and skills between generations of Vietnamese living overseas. Các tiết mục văn nghệ là một trong những phần chính của HCT. Các thế hệ, từ những nghệ sĩ lão thành nhiều kinh nghiệm đến các thanh niên đang bắt đầu chuyên nghiệp trỉnh diễn trên sân khấu HCT và cũng là cơ hội cho các mầm non thực tập khả năng trước công chúng. Đây là sự truyền đạt văn hóa của các thế hệ người Việt tại hải ngoại.

Sceneries of old Saigon such as the old City Hall, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Market were very popular with festival visitors as they brought back memories of a country they left behind. Các hình ảnh xưa của Sài Gòn như Tòa Đô Chánh, Nhà Thờ Đức Bà, Chợ Bến Thành được nhiều người đến xem, gợi lại ký ức của một quê hương năm xưa.

Besides giving information and direction to Festival visitors, VAT staff also use the opportunity of high attendance to promote its free settlement services to newcomers. Ngoài việc cung cấp thông tin và hướng dẫn địa điểm cho khách, nhân viên HNV cũng nhân cơ hội có đông người tham dự để phổ biến thông tin về các dịch vụ định cư cho di dân mới đến.


FESTIVAL VISITORS/ KHÁCH DỰ HỘI CHỢ TẾT

The Tet Festival attracted attention of all levels of government and its important officials. When delivering his speech at the Tet Festival, IRCC Minister John McCallum said the Vietnamese community has shown a successful model of resettlement in Canada./ Hội Chợ Tết thu hút được sự chú ý của các cấp chính phủ và nhiều chính khách quan trọng. Khi phát biểu trên sân khấu HCT, Bộ Trưởng Di Trú Ông John McCallum nói rằng cộng đồng người Việt đã chứng tỏ mô hình định cư thành công tại Canada.

Some members of the Vietnamese Senior Choir who are being trained under funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program demonstrated their new musical skills at the Constituency Office of MP Julie Dzerowics during a reception for organizations in the Davenport Riding which received NHSP funding. On the occasion of the Asian Heritage Month of May, VAT displayed Vietnamese Arts and Craft at MPP Cristina Martins’ Office. Some displays are traditional articles such as dresses and turbans. Others, such as the Origami swans, are made by seniors under funding from the Ontario Government with the Seniors Community Grant Program. Nhân dịp tháng 5 là tháng Di Sản Văn Hóa Á Châu, HNV triển lãm sản phẩm thủ công nghệ tại văn phòng Dân Biểu Tỉnh Bang Cristina Martins. Một số là sản phẩm truyền thống như áo dài khăn đống. Một số khác như các thiên nga bằng giấy xếp do cao niên thực hiện trong chương trình tài trợ của Chính Phủ Ontario, thuộc Seniors Community Grant Program.

VAT settlement counsellors serve newcomers under the funding of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Programs include one-on-one counseling and monthly workshops on various topics such as employment assistance, citizenship test preparation class, income tax preparation information sessions, etc. In the fiscal year from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016, VAT staff served 8,359 client visits. In this number, 2,182 were new clients who came to VAT for the first time, and 6,177 were former clients who came back to VAT for subsequent services. VAT staff also organized 113 workshops, information sessions and classes. VAT currently provides settlement services in English, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog and Tibetan. Many immigrants have found convenient rental accommodation, employment in their own field of expertise, and eventually bought their own homes to settle down as a result of help from VAT. Besides the main funding of $631,696 from IRCC during the government fiscal year 2015-16, VAT also received additional funding from other sources:

• Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat – Seniors Community Grant (SCG): $6,376 for computer training and Origami arts classes for seniors.

• Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH): $22,916 for the Problem Gambling Counselling Program

• City of Toronto: $69,521 for the program to hire and train workers provided by Toronto Employment and Social Services.
