ORGANIC shops are mushrooming inFrance despite the country's distinctanti-vegetarian psychology. The shops, often as large as a

    medium-sized Sainsbury's or Waitrose,

go under the name of 'bio' and can befound all over the country from Paristo Nice; Avignon to Calais.Between them they tap into a market

worth billions of euros annually andthis is increasing year-on-year.Backed by European Commission

policy many are looking keenly toimport new products from other Eurocountries including Britain wherevegetarian and vegan diets arecomparatively commonplace.Pleine Nature have two large stores in

north and south Avignon in Provence

both with large, bright restaurants. The shops boast "professional bio

experts" to advise "from our wideselection of products which includetofu and seitan burgers and plenty of

    egg- and dairy-free favourites.At Coherence,a popular bio-shop in

historic village Villeneuve-les-Avignon, a worker explained: We arealways looking for new productsespecially if we dont stock them. Wewould definitely look at UK products.Tina Chevalier-Popineau self-styled

"plant-based chef" from Los Angeles, now living in Nice, blogs: "Organicproducts are huge in France. There isa large bio/organic following here."Almost 50 per cent of consumers in

the Paris area alone shop bio. (Cont p2)

NTERNET search giant Google waskeeping tight-lipped this weekbout why it snubbed requests to

put up a special "doodle" to markworld vegan day.Doodles are the fun, surprisingnd sometimes spontaneoushanges that are made to the

Vegan Day (1stNovember), whichhis year marks the 70thnniversary of the terms 'vegan',

veganism', and the establishmentof The Vegan Society, just didn'teem to make the grade.A request fromFGfor a commentas so far gone unanswered. The snub was slammed by veganhef Tony Weston-Bishop as a "blot

on the vegan landscape"."That would have been the icingon the egg-free dairy-free cake,"e said on his blog. The month-long anniversary

kicked off on 1st November toelebrate the founding of the

GOOGLE SNUBS WORLD VEGAN DAYContinued from page 1

The word vegan was chosen by founder DonaldWatson and his non-dairy vegetarians to describetheir diet.Watson took the first and last two letters of

vegetarian to create a new word.World Vegan Day was established in 1994 by

Louise Wallis, then president and chair of TheVegan Society UKto mark its 50th anniversary.Vegans around the world hold street stalls about

veganism, host vegan potluck events, plantmemorial trees for World Vegan Day and give awayanimal friendly vegan baking.

Speaking in 2011 Wallis said: We knew theSociety had been founded in November 1944, butdidnt know the exact date, so I decided to go forthe 1st November. Partly because I liked the ideaof this date coinciding with Halloween and the Dayof the Dead [sic] traditional times for feasting andcelebration. Both apt and auspicious.

"Ive personally met people in France that willonly consume products purchased from the biostores."Only 3% of the land in France is zoned for bio

products, although the government set a target of6% in 2012." Many bio shops are part of the 'Biocoop'

network's federation of over 300 independent

consumer co-operatives and shops in France (andnow in Portugal and Spain) who share ideals, objectives and structures. They have developed a local to international

supply and distribution infrastructure to ensurethat each shop is able to source as locally andethically as is feasible, whilst being able to accessa product range of over 8,000 lines.Over 90% of the food sold, which also includes

meat products, is organic. The turnover is 450 million Euros and they

control 13% of the French organic market, with3000 employees and 300,000 consumers.

In the EU Organic Action Plan 2014, theCommission acknowledges that organic farmingoffers real solutions to realising the EUs Europe2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusivegrowth. And it declares: "[The EU] will continue to

highlight the importance of ensuring that policiesover the next five years are capable of stimulatingsustainable growth and green job creation thatcan be delivered by the organic sector."

    THEINTERVIEWCOUP DE GRAS

The production of foie gras (the liver of a duck or a goose that has been specially fattened)

involves the controversial force-feeding of birds with more food than they would eat in the wild,

and more than they would voluntarily eat domestically. The feed, usually corn boiled with fat (to

facilitate ingestion), deposits large amounts of fat in the liver, thereby producing the buttery

consistency sought by some gastronomes. (Wikipedia)

Ithink the idea is, the people

who are organising it, to go on doingit until he stops selling foie gras. What Anita Plattner, 78, former danceteacher and school clinic nurse isreferring to is the stir Jack O'Shea iscausing with the recent opening of hisbutcher's shop in Primrose Hill, northLondon. For Jack, described as a 'celebritybutcher' is selling the French delicacyfoie gras, made from force feedingducks and geese until their livers burstand then eating them [the livers].

His controversial take on satisfying thehuman palate, even though he denieshis particular brand involves cruelty, has been picked up by tv personalityVanessa Feltz on her tv chat show.Speaking exclusively to FGAnita, avegetarian who has lived in WestHampstead for 26 years, said: Thepoint is you shouldn't torture anythingin order to eat it.Obviously masses of meat is eaten allover the world but they are killedhumanely with a bullet in their brain. But geese and ducks are torturedwith pushing implements down theirthroats until they just can't carry anymore grain in their throat.I think its wrong to torture a bird orto torture anybody.I'm a member of the medicalfoundation for victims of torture.People who've been tortured abroadand manage to find their way here andthen they're put in touch with thisorganisation which helps them to get

over it."Paul who's been organising it. Hephoned me and told me there's going tobe another demonstration.I think the idea is, the people whoare organising it, to go on doing it untilhe stops selling foie gras." (Cont p.4)

Recently there have been letters sent in to thelocal press which has covered the story

complaining about'noisy demonstrators'.Anita has responded:"My letter says: I wasnot at that particulardemonstration.I sympathise withresidents who live inthe immediate

vicinity of thebutcher's shop butthere comes a timewhen one needs tostand up and saysomething is wrong."Torturing any live

creatures, human, animal or bird is wrong, which isno doubt why the British government does notallow the production of foie gras in this country.Mr O'Shea is not being asked to close his shop ornot sell meat in general, just this one particulardelicacy. So there is the answer to the letter writer.Ask the butcher to stop importing foie gras. It's difficult to believe if that would make muchdifference to his financial turnover but it wouldmake a lot of difference to the ducks and geese."Guilt free foie gras see our recipie on p.10.

A politician, a guru anda government in trouble

A TOP Indian government minister hasescaped the cut and thrust of politicallife and sought the sanctuary of astrictly vegetarian spiritual centre.

BJPs veteran leader and Indian VicePrime Minister, LK Advani (picturedright) put the heat and dust of powerbehind him and paid an unprecedented

visit to Radha Soami Satsang Beas in thePunjab in north-west India.

As well as enjoying a calm andspiritual atmosphere Advani, 86, asenior leader of the ruling BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP), was expected todiscuss with RSSB centre head, GurinderDhillon, the deteriorating situation inthe government .

Mr Dillon has established excellent relationswith the Chief Minister in the Punjab ParkashSingh Badal.

The crisis centres on the fragile pact

between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJPcurrently in government.

Both parties are nationalist pro-religiousbodies which, between them, trounced thesecular and leftist Congress Party in the generalelection earlier this year.

And vital Punjabi seats in the Lok Sabha havebeen won only with the help of the SAD.

But now a battle royal is raging over whichparty should hold the reins of power in thePunjab.

"The interesting fact is that Advani who willbe in Punjab for almost 18 hours, is neitherscheduled nor expected or likely to call on anySAD leader," the Sikh press reported.

Meanwhile Badal has played down talks of arift.

"All is well between both the coalitionpartners. The BJP leadership is well aware ofthe fact that SAD is their time-tested ally sothere is hardly any question of parting awayfrom each other.

"BJP leadership will never sever ties with itsoldest ally," he told Indian reporters last month.

The Radha Soami centre in Beas is reputedly

the largest and most powerful branch of theRadha Soami family which has its roots intraditional Sikhism.

Gurinder Dhillon has headed up the groupsince June 1990 after the death of predecessorand uncle Charan Singh whose politicalsympathies reportedly lay with Congress.

    Im Spartacus,and Im a

vegetarianSWORD wielding actors ofthe big and small screenbattling in the arenas ofancient Rome may have tore-think their parts afterresearch shows thatgladiators were veggies! The likes of Russell Croweand Liam McIntyre (picturedright) were often seentucking into a plate of almostraw steak to bulk up forbattle - Maximus in Gladiatorand Spartacus in theeponymous tv series. But recent research revealsthat Roman gladiators had adiet that was mostly

vegetarian according to ananalysis of bones from acemetery where the arenafighters were buried. The study has been carriedout by academics from theMedical University of Viennain Austria and the Universityof Berne in Switzerland. They found the gladiator dietwas grain-based and mostlymeat-free, a BBCreport says. The examination of gladiatorbones also found evidencethey drank a drink made fromplant ashes. This ash drink was a form ofhealth-boosting tonic to help

gladiators recover afterfighting and training. The bone analysis wasbased on excavations ofthe graves of 22

gladiators from about1,800 years ago in theRoman town of Ephesus, now in Turkey. The bones revealed thatthe typical food eaten bygladiators was wheat, barley and beans - echo-ing the contemporaryterm for gladiators as the"barley men".There was little sign ofmeat or dairy products in

the diet of almost all ofthese professionalfighters, who performedin front of Romanaudiences. The researchers say thatgladiators were mainly

prisoners of war, slavesand condemnedoffenders. But therewere also people whovolunteered to train and

take part in contests. They estimate that mentaking part in gladiatorcontests had a one-in-nine chance of beingkilled, each time theyfought. But there were bonesfrom two people thatseemed to have adifferent pattern, revealing a diet muchhigher in animal protein

and lower in beans andpulses. This could show therewere gladiators originallyfrom other parts of theRoman empire who had adifferent type of diet.

    My enemys enemy . . .

JEWISH voters who fear the rise ofIslamic anti-semitism are backing the

French Nationalist party led by MarineLe Pen, a survey has revealed.Reason being the far right party has

shed it's anti-semitic stance and nowpresents itself as a bulwark againstIslamic anti-semitism.

A staggering 13.5% of French Jewsbacked Le Pen in the 2012 electionwhich saw socialist Francois Hollandebecome president.

"The increase of FN vote among theJewish voters is explained by thestrategy of de-demonisation led by the

party, the absence of bad references tothe Holocaust in Marine Le Pen'sspeech and especially the growingconcern in part of the Jewishcommunity about the rise of 'Islamicanti-semitism' vis--vis of which the FNpresents itself as a bulwark," JeromeFourquet, IFOP director of publicopinion, who conducted the poll of1,095 respondents over 10 years, toldFrench reporters recently.

THEY SHOOT HORSES DONT THEY?THE DEATH of a horse which broke aleg while racing has been slammedby an animal aid body.

Fitz Flyer, was involved in a five-horse melee, in the six-furlong (3/4mile) sprint at Wolverhamptonracecourse earlier this month.

The steeds clipped heels on the finalbend and ran riderless to the finishingpost. Fitz Flyer was later put down.

Jockeys Richard Kingscote, PaulHanagan and Freddie Tylicki werehurt and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Dene Stansall a horse racingconsultant at Animal Aid said:"Undoubtedly, the racing industry willpass Fitz Flyers death off as an

unfortunate accident. But, across British racecourses, there are around 200 such fatalaccidents every single year.

At the heart of the problem is aself-regulating sport, which is hand-in-hand with the betting industry.Thefact that the rest of the eveningsraces went ahead is indicative of how

little racing thinks of its horses oreven its jockeys.

There is precious little informationabout horse fatalities in the press orby the regulator other than onAnimal Aids Deathwatchwebsite.

We will keep speaking up for allthose horses who are victims of theracing industry."

The British Horseracing Authorityhas ordered a report into whathappened.

Carrot power keepsFrench village goingA KEY player in organic carrot and vegetable production inFrance is producing energy as a by-product of his business.Farmer Phillippe Larrere, who is the director of SARLLarrere, has succeeded in supplying carrot-based heatingand lighting to Lipothsay in Acquaitaine.

This has been achieved by converting waste intobiomethane, writes Mireille Joffe.

'Biomethanisation' is a natural process when organic

matter is broken down by micro-organisms without thepresence of oxygen, says M. Larrere.

This can only happen under conditions where acidityand temperature levels are correctly controlled. Thetechnology used for the process involves several stepswith three separate reactors.

    M. Larrere successfully created this green energy atthe same time as reducing the firm's CO2 emissions andofficially opened his GreenWatt power station in theLandes department in September 2014.

    FRIENDLY FEEDBACK

    DEAR Mr Ward,

Thanks for the latest issue ofFG. I am glad to see a photo ofa Facebook friend, RaniChandy, on page 3 [of your lastissue]. (Death wish cows? Noton your Nellie - FGOct.)I am even more pleased you

have printed my comment byemail! You have bitten it hook, line and sinker, it seems! So let me ask you if you know

anything of India's history? Howdid Babur manage to build a

masjid (mosque) in place of aHindu temple? (FriendlyFeedback -FGOctober)Archaeological excavations by

the Archaeological Survey ofIndia (ASI) in 1970, 1992 and2003 in and around thedisputed site have indicated alarge Hindu complex existed onthe site. How can a masjid bebuilt without the destruction ofa temple! The stones of thetemple were actually re-usedto build the masjid!Perhaps you can provide the

Hindus [sic] with 'a time travelmachine' and you can thenhave first-hand evidence of thishappening! In the meantime the report

    ''Stone and decorated bricks

Independent film directorand author, Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon, (pictured above) speaks

out this month about theBritish film industry.

THE BRITISH Film industry is in the

    doldrums.

The big UK multiplexes like Cineworld

and The Vue are dominated by children's

    and teenager's animated adventure films

and big star Hollywood studio blockbusters

    backed by considerable funds for

    marketing and promoting their product.

Big stars cost big bucks, but do they sell

    films?

It is very hard for serious British Indie

films to get a look in without the backing

of the funds to engage with promoting this

    work.

Cinema chains in the USA are in the grip

of the big studios more or less deciding

which films are shown and which are not -

    favouring US productions.

The chains are actually owned or partly

    owned by the studios.

On this basis it is extremely difficult

(but not impossible ) to raise funding for
