Philip Tagg’s Christmas blather, 2011. [1] This year I’ve been all over the place in more ways than one but mostly for lecturing, conference papers, etc., including such exotic destinations as Grahmstown (South Africa), Oslo, Kristiansand, New York, Glasgow, Århus (Denmark), Rome, Southampton and Durham. [2] My book, Everyday Tonality (2009), was published in Italian in late September. If you’d like a freebie of the original English version, let me know and I’ll send you the free download link. [3] I’ve been slogging away with my 500‐page ‘musicology for non‐musos’ book which should be out soon in the New Year. [4] I’ve produced some quite successful ‘musematic edutainment’ videos that you’ll find on YouTube if you enter “etymophony” in the YouTube search box. It’s nice to be back in the UK, to be able to see a bit more of my daughter, not to have to speak a foreign language in the morning, to have friends and a nice little university music department less than ten minutes walk away. It’s fantastic to be a pensioner, not to have to bother with admin, corrections and reports (apart from this one). I recommend retirement to everybody. I can say what I think without fear of losing my job because I’ve none to lose. The only thing really bugging me is how ordinary people, especially the young, are treated as liabilities while the real liabilities — finance speculators in the pirate’s nest of London’s City— are allowed to ruin everything and receive billions in bonuses for doing so. There should be a revolution, even if it’s Christmas. And it’s no fun, nor any use, to say ‘I told you so’ about capitalism, so I won’t! Warmest wishes for Christmas and 2012!
