DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 20162

And so the adventure begins here.

Our third edition has been yet another exhilarating experience in discovering Sharqiya with the excitement of a tourist and the pride of a native – two juxtaposing feelings we aim to encourage in all the residents of this province – natives, expats and visitors alike.

Each of our editions aims to bring out a new side of Sharqiya and this

time we bring to you all the people who keep this city active: from golfers and bikers to cyclists and tour guides. We hope they will inspire you, as they did us, to push for your goals with perseverance, integrity and passion. We are proud to be featuring Sharqawis who are creating a balanced life in the city and inspiring others to do the same.

We hope you will be taking advantage of the start of spring: dining outdoors on the weekends and taking your fitness routines outside, enjoying the breeze while you take a jog or heading out for a relaxing stroll – you can never have too much fresh air.

At Destination, aside from being the ultimate city guide, we aspire to be a lot of things for our readers: a timeless record of all things beautiful, a source of inspiration and the silver lining on a dreary day – we’re here to remind you every single day your life, your city and your home are beautiful in the utmost way.

Generally, financial planning depends on three key legs:

SO LET’S GET STARTED:STEP I: CREATE A TABLECreate a table with the following items in two separate columns:INCOMEAny income stream that will continue throughout your life (retirement benefits, property rental, bonds, dividends). Divide that figure by 12.

EXPENSES- Estimate of the amount of

money you need after exiting the job market and/or ending your career on a monthly basis.

- Other needs and wants on a monthly basis (travel, medical, other).

- Emergency needs.

STEP 2: MULTIPLY YOUR EXPENSES BY 12- Deduct that number from the

monthly income figure.- If the result is positive, then

you are in a relatively safe zone. If not -which is mostly the case, due to inflation and unexpected life events- then please think it over thoroughly. Do not wait till it’s too late.

Any sound Personal Finance plan depends on these three pillars. If this helps, think of it as a solidly built tripod; the stronger and leaner,

the better the outcome. Note that saving and retiring are more directly related since retirement requires an early start.

REVISE Before sharing posts, check your spelling and grammar. For visual posts: Remember quality over quantity. Lastly, ask yourself: Does it serve its purpose and fit with your brand image?

PLAN Schedule when and what you post. Organization creates a bigger picture of the brand and helps you stay consistent.

Tips to Remember

• You do not need an account on every

social media platform.

•Some platforms require more time and effort

than others.

• Stay on top of your game.

•Trial and error is key; that’s how you learn what works and what doesn’t.

• People love images, so use them!

Infographics and short videos depict your ideas

in minimal time.

• Facebook and Twitter offer customer-

• Use these statistics to evaluate your own

performance too.

ANALYZE Many social media platforms offer statistics and profile activity analysis. This comes in handy with your marketing strategy development. Discover your popular posts, peak response times, average customer age, etc.

WHY SOCIAL MEDIA?

• Reach a wider number of customers.

• Gather customer feedback.

• Be accessible to customers

and media outlets.

One man’s vision to enact social change through biking.

By Fatima Al Reian

Founded in April 2012, Adnan Alkendi started Sharqiyah Bikers as a social initiative to take on youths from the streets and change the stigma that is usually associated with bikers. By the beginning of 2013 it became a part of the Saudi Arabia Motor Federation. The group has around 80 registered members and it’s always seeking to grow. Anyone with a valid license can join, but they have to have a referral from a current member. New members will then pledge to follow the country's road rules, regulations and public order.

The membership costs SR 300 and is valid for one year; it includes a kit that has a polo

shirt with the group’s logo on it, a sticker, a drop leg bag and a cap. All members are invited to attend the annual ceremony.

It is considered a social group more than a biker’s club since its members have actively participated in many charitable events in Sharqiya. Every Ramadan the group has been volunteering to hand out Iftar meals at traffic lights.

They also joined in a Eid ceremony for senior citizens at the Prince Sultan Rehabilitation Complex in Dammam, participated in the Arab Orphan Day, Traffic Safety Week, as well as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The group is seeking to promote that motorcycles are not dangerous, as long as all the safety precautions are followed. Alkendi stresses that “Safety First” is their key value. One of their most recent regional activities was a first of its kind 7-day 4,500 kilometer rally across the Gulf countries. The trip started in Kuwait, passed through Bahrain, Saudi, Qatar and ended in Oman, which coincided with celebrations of the Omani National Day. Alkendi was ecstatic with how things went, saying that it was a huge success and that members of other groups in every location joined them on the trip.

Cycling the Streets of JUBAIL

Did you know that Jubail has its own cycling club? A volunteer group established it back in 2002 for the pure love of cycling and with a simple mission to promote it to everyone. The Jubail Cycling Club (JCC) currently has more than 50 members of all nationalities and they meet every week for group bicycle rides.

We had a quick chat with Norman Vidal, JCC Activities and Events Coordinator, about this active group.

Who is the target audience for JCC?JCC welcomes any and all cyclists above the age of 18, regardless of their level of experience.

Page 21: DS Issue 3

19DESTINATIONKSA.COM

What are some of the activities and services you do in JCC?We like to do weekly club rides and annual races. We also enjoy providing community support services annually on Earth Day where we get people together to clean up the trash at Jubail Beach. In fact, we loved it so much that we are

planning to do such cleanups quarterly throughout the Jubail area.

Is the JCC sponsored commercially? We tried it in the past, but now we have a monthly financial contribution system through which the members sustain the club and its needs. It helps

cover our costs with bike repair tools, expenses while visiting locations for cycling events and even offering support to members during emergencies.

Do you offer coached training sessions? We’re still a small operation and the majority of our members already have a lot of years of experience in bike riding, so we don’t offer coached training at this time. Our main focus right now is campaigning and promoting the joy of cycling freely and safely on the roads of Saudi Arabia.

We hit the fairways with Saudi golfer, Othman Almulla.SAUDI TEE TIMEBy Mona Sabr

How did you first get started with golfing? This is actually one of my favorite stories. I grew up like any other Saudi teen, having love for one sport: soccer. I’d play any chance I could get, to the point that I was training on AlNahda Football Club’s under-16 team. Unfortunately, my grades took a small hit and that was the end of that for my parents. I was told that I could enjoy my summers any way that I wanted but I could

no longer play soccer. So I decided to try something new and joined some of my expat friends in Saudi Aramco to play the sport that would shape my life thereafter: golf.

What kind of training does golf involve?Well, the beautiful thing about golf is that it caters to everyone interested in playing, from the beginner who can only enjoy it during the weekends, to the elite player that wants to push

Page 23: DS Issue 3

21DESTINATIONKSA.COM

their own games to the farthest reaches. The latter would be a more intense program of golf training, 5-6 times a week for hours at a time. Although golf isn't the most physical game, flexibility and core training can only help improve your game.

Who are your team members? The Saudi National Golf Team has six players that represent the first team: Khaled Attieh, Ali Alsakha, Fahad AlMansour,

Omar Hariri, Saud Alsharif and myself.

What is your most memorable golfing moment? Golf has been very good to me and I’ve had lots of memorable moments. But if I had to choose one it would have to be when I won the Red Sea Pan Arab individual championship in Egypt. It was the first time a Saudi had won the tournament, and after receiving the trophy

at the prize ceremony they played the Saudi national anthem and raised the Saudi flag. There is nothing more fulfilling than representing my country and it’s such an honor to achieve results that become a part of Saudi’s history.

Favorite golf course?Oh that would have to be the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Definitely.

What keeps you motivated?Generally I have short-term and long-term goals that keep me going. But my main motivation is my family; having them join me for tournaments and travel around the world with me keeps me focused and puts me in the right environment to achieve my goals.

What advice would you give to young Saudis interested

in learning to play?

Go out and try the game! Golf has a lot of

misconceptions in the region, especially the stereotype of being an old or rich person’s

game. Through my own experience, I believe that golf is a true reflection of life. The game teaches you patience and strength and a strong sense of belief in yourself.

SOAK IN THE SIGHTS OF SHARQIYA

The Eastern Province is known as the hub of the Kingdom’s oil industry. Sadly, that means it’s generally considered nothing more than an industrial area. However, there is so much more it has to offer, which is what the organizers of the Eastern Coast Tourism Route want visitors and residents alike to discover.

Under the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, this initiative launched late last year as the first tourism route project in the country and has seen rapid success and popularity since then. It runs every weekend on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, lasting around five hours. Passing through prominent attractions, the route is a great way to experience Sharqiya, accompanied by informative tour guides whose love for our nook of the country overflows as they gush about the details of the region.

The Saturday tour starts out with a delicious traditional breakfast at Rashid Mall’s Cultural Café where you are surrounded by culture and tradition with a modern twist. Whatever you do, don’t miss their amazing karak tea.

The first attraction on the Friday route is Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Science and Technology Center (SCITECH), located in Khobar’s Corniche area. It boasts seven main halls illustrating a wide-range of technologies and hosting more than 350 scientific displays, an IMAX theater and more.

A popular attraction on the route is the Al Amer Gallery, located in the heart of Rakkah area. Al Amer Gallery is the once private collection of owner Mohammed Al Amer that, thanks to the Tourism Route, has been opened for all to enjoy. The gallery comprises more than 20 diverse halls full of archeological, educational and technological artifacts, along with so much art in all its forms. With each visit you discover something new buried within this treasure trove of culture and heritage.

The Eastern Coast Tourism Route is a great experience for anyone visiting the region, or even residents themselves who’d like to try something new with family or friends over the weekend. Check them out and sign up for the next trip!

task which at first would seem rather difficult considering the private nature of super car owners in the city.

However, this did not deter Naif. On his last year at Al Faisal University, he decided to organize the first Cars and Coffee event, with Shell as the official sponsor.

Cars and Coffee is one of the most famous auto meet ups happening in different cities around the world, where enthusiasts gather

to show their most prized machines and build a sense of camaraderie among owners.

What makes Cars and Coffee a bit different in KSA though is the level of exclusivity it now entails. It has also given birth to Superior Automotive, a company founded by Naif, that aims to create events for super car enthusiasts, including cross-city and country road trips and visits to the best auto factories in the world.

One such visit was to the McLaren headquarters, Naif’s favorite brand. At some point, he wanted to be a professional racer and even took international courses towards a career in F1 racing. While he has changed his direction, he remains enthralled by the experience of being behind the wheel and on the road.

“I don’t consider myself a collector; I’m an automotive enthusiast. I don’t buy a car to have it in the garage

and have it driven only once a year. I respect the science, the engineering behind the machine. I want to ride it, to experience its power.”

Off the road, Naif also has a room of die-cast collectibles, (miniature versions that are exact replicas of their real-life counterparts). This collection alone speaks volumes of how enthusiasts take their hobbies as a way of life—it is also telling of Naif’s love of innovation and ingenuity.

Apart from being a gearhead, Naif is deeply involved in fostering advanced technology in the Kingdom. He worked for three years at Aramco and wants to create an impact in the

I've tried it myself and I can tell you that the difference is noticeable. It makes your foundation and concealer application flawless and without any of those nasty streaks.

You run it under water and squeeze it a couple of times until it’s damp. Just make sure after washing it to leave it in a well-ventilated area, so bacteria doesn't grow on it, and don’t forget to replace it every three months.

MARCH IS FOR GIORDANOTwenty-one years and counting.

March is a special month for Giordano, one of the top clothing brands operating 100 stores across KSA. It is the month Giordano inaugurated their first shop at Al Faisalia Mall in downtown Jeddah. It had been 21 years since then, and the organization’s exponential growth continues to be remarkable. “Giving it back” or “paying it forward” was the brand’s way of

marking their 10th and 15th year of operation in the Kingdom. As a way of showing gratitude to the country, charity events supporting the children of Disabled Children Association were the main focus. Last year the brand celebrated its 20th anniversary by recognizing 20 loyal customers and employees. A fashion show was organized and modeled by company staff.

The key to Giordano’s long term success has always been in maintaining its commitment to provide simple, clean and comfortable design, quality workmanship and knowledgeable customer service. The latter is going to be strengthened with the launch of “Giordano Means Service,” one of the core values they firmly believe in.

Giordano currently operates 260 stores in the Middle East and aims to reach 300 in the next three years. Globally, it operates 2,400 stores in 40 countries.

Face oils: look younger, feel youngerBy Zareen Muzaffar

Get Your Glow Back

Face oils are not restricted to those suffering from extremely dry skin. It’s one of the best ways to get supple skin and the highly coveted dewy look.

Whether you go for grapeseed, coconut, jojoba, argan or almond oil; keep in mind that they vary in texture and richness. Test and trial, and inspect results.

Bobbi Brown Extra Face OilWith a very calming fragrance, it moisturizes and softens the skin. A blend of Vitamin E, sesame, sweet almond, olive and jojoba oil. Apply before makeup for a soft base or before bed. For normal to dry skin.

L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Youth OilInterestingly, the Divine collection is formulated with Corsican Immortelle; the everlasting flower that never fades, even after it has been picked. Initially, I thought it’s just a marketing angle, but this oil does leave your skin feeling soft and it’s said to have anti-aging properties as well.

Clarins offers three kinds of face oils: lotus (combination to oily skin), blue orchid (normal skin) and santal (very dry skin). Use according to your skin type, as these rebalancing oils are made from pure plant extracts.

Dior hasn’t come out with an independent line of face oils yet, but this oil promises thorough makeup removal. A great option if you don’t want to use makeup removing pads or tissues that can leave the skin overly dry post-cleansing.

Estee Lauder Nutritious Radiant Vitality Essence OilThis oil can’t be used by itself, especially if you have dry skin. Use a few drops along with your moisturizer for an added skin boost. It is heavily fragranced, but if you don’t mind the scent, go for it.

Excellent for sensitive skin, jojoba oil acts as a natural barrier to environmental allergens. Due to its anti-microbial properties, it helps to slow the growth of bacterial and fungal microbes. Get your hands on a bottle from healthcare stores or an apothecarist.

Vitamin D3 Supplements Aimed at Combating DeficiencyThe sun is now in your hands.

DO SOMETHING!• Take vitamin D test.• Consult your doctor or pharmacist.• Learn about the different dosage forms of Vitamin D.

Stay healthy and get some sun!

The Prevalent ProblemAccording to a research carried out by King Saud University, vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Although Saudi Arabia is one of the sunniest countries, vitamin D deficiency has been a predominant problem among the population. What Vitamin D DoesBiologically, vitamin D basically helps make healthy bones. It also aids the body to fight infections and protect itself against the development of different types of cancer including colorectal cancer and breast cancer. How is it Made?Vitamin D3 is specifically made within the skin through the exposure of ultraviolet light B of the sun, or from specific food intake such as eggs, liver, fishy oils, fortified milk and cereals.

This shows that the shortage of both

sufficient protein food intake and sunlight can create a deficiency that

is only solvable through supplements.

A study that was carried out in November

2009 on medical students in Dammam, showed

100 % deficiency in the vitamin D level.

A study carried out in 2015 showed that

84 % of Saudi women had the

deficiency due to lack of sunlight exposure

during the day.

ALARMING STATS

So you’ve decided you want to join a group workout class instead of your normal routines, but you are a bit nervous on how the class will be and whether or not you would be able to catch up with the rest? Well there’s nothing to be nervous about, we’ve all been there. Here are some tips to help you ease through your first couple of classes.

You can do it! Just follow these tips.

Surviving Your First Workout Class

RESEARCHFirst of all take some time to research a bit about the class. For example, the class is boot camp. Find out the fitness level required to enter the class, ask the gym/instructor if it’s a private training center, ask for more info on what types of boot camps they are running; will it include weights, is it outdoors, etc. Knowing what you are getting yourself into will help you feel more at ease.

GO EARLYBe there before the scheduled time. This will give you time to speak to the instructor and introduce yourself; also you can mention any difficulties or injuries you have or ask them any questions. Going early can also give you a chance to mingle and ask other members their thoughts of the class.

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!A general rule of advice would be to not compare yourself to anyone else. If you feel that you have overworked yourself or are really tired, do not look at the person next to you and try to compete. If you need a break then give yourself a break, you are just getting started.

Most importantly don’t quit.

Force yourself to keep going

and be committed and you will start seeing results with

time.

Many parents get frustrated at mealtimes, with their children refusing to eat most of their food, but there are simple steps you can take to overcome this.

Focus on Yourself Parents often surrender to their child’s wants to avoid a mealtime tantrum… It’s a trap! There are some steps to help you improve your attitude towards food.

1

Respect Your Child’s Opinion Don’t force-feed a child who claims to

be full or not hungry; it undermines his/her sense of hunger or satiety. Children’s

palates are very sensitive, so maybe your child simply doesn’t like the food.

Be Patient and Persistent Food rejection is a natural part of child development. Children need repeated

exposure to the same food before they’re willing to taste it.

Be a Role Model Your children will eat what

they see you eat.

Tired of mealtime tantrums and tears? Worry no more!

10 STEPSTO GET YOUR PICKY EATER TO EAT HEALTHY

By making small and steady changes, you can promote

healthy eating habits which your child can carry

throughout his/her life.

2 Establish a RoutinePicky eaters snack throughout the day, thus getting full before meals. Prevent this by scheduling meals and snacks.

FRIDAYMarch 18

6 Be Creative

Serve Attractive Food Cut shapes, mix colors and

include sliced vegetables with their

favorite dip.

Know Their Preferences

Crunchiness/smoothness, saltiness/sweetness,

and try to modify food texture accordingly.

Shift Focus to Something Other Than

the Food’s Taste Its color, shape

or texture.

7 Seek Help From a FriendA study by Dr. Helen Hendy found that preschoolers were more likely to try mango when another classmate tried it.

8 Minimize DistractionThe whole family should be seated at the table for meals, with eating being the sole focus.

Avoid Food RewardsChildren should identify food as fuel, not reward. Rewarding with specific foods (like chocolate) leads to poor eating habits. Your child may associate eating with achievement or stress relief rather than hunger.

9

10 Don’t Buy Unhealthy FoodsEven if your child asks for it!

3 Start Small• Introduce new foods in tiny portions (1/2tsp).• Introduce during snack time; the child who refuses to eat will be hungry by the next meal and will eat anything.

4 Subtly Introduce New Foods• If your child likes rice, try shredding new vegetables over it or add small pieces of broccoli over spaghetti.• Always taste a meal first; make sure it’s appetizing.

5 Involve Your ChildAsk your child to help with selecting and preparing food.

“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (54:22)

1. Tranquillity and Mercy Descend

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those in His proximity.” (Sahih Muslim)

2. Countless Reward for its Recitation

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (Al Tirmidhi)

3. Raise in the Ranks

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “One who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

The Qur’an, the speech of Allah, which was revealed to the Last Messenger in the Arabic language through Angel Jibreel, is a source of ultimate guidance for mankind. We learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) many virtues for reciting the Qur’an with a pure intention.

ANDALUSIA The Cradle of European Civilization?

Greece and Italy are often cited as the cradles of modern western civilization, where we get notions of democracy, academia and more. However, an increasing number of people are starting to question this notion and instead are appreciating the significance of the Muslim period in Spain Al Andalus (711-1492). A time when culture, civilization, academia and society peaked, it even included periods of amazing inter-faith tolerance. Could it be that in fact Spain is the real cradle of European civilization?

In this journey through two of the key cities of Muslim Spain, Cordoba, the Umayyad

Caliphate’s capital; and Granada, where it all came to an end, we will offer a glimpse of Al Andalus through its most important and charming remnants.

CORDOBA Whilst tourists head to Granada, connoisseurs come to Cordoba. “Europe was darkened at sunset, Cordoba shone with public lamps; Europe was dirty, Cordoba built a thousand baths … Europe lay in mud, Cordoba’s streets were paved … Europe’s nobility could not sign its name, Cordoba’s children went to school; Europe’s monks could not read the baptismal service, Cordoba’s teachers created a library of Alexandrian

dimensions.” Twentieth century author and physician, Victor Robinson, perfectly sums up why this city is believed to have inspired one of Europe’s most enlightened epochs (the 8th - 11th century).

MEZQUITA-CATHEDRALThe importance and majestic beauty of what was the Great Mosque of Cordoba is difficult to overstate; the only remaining direct link to Abd Al Rahman I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who fled Syria to avoid being murdered like the rest of the Umayyads. Modeled on his ancestral mosque in Damascus, this remarkable architectural

achievement was designed to appear like a forest of palms, allowing light to flood in and the praying spirit to soar. Opened in 785 AD, on the site of the Church of St. Vincent, which Abd Al Rahman had bought, today it is again a Christian place of worship. That was irreversibly sealed in the 16th century, when the center of the mosque was ripped out and replaced with a cathedral. Fortunately, the stunning scallop-shaped mihrabs remain. MeetingsMADINAT AL ZAHRAIt may have lasted a mere 30 years, but this palace city was built by Abd Al Rahman III in the 10th century to make a statement. He had declared himself Caliph of Islam - the only time a caliphate was declared in Europe. Madinat Al Zahra took 10,000 laborers setting 6,000 stone blocks a day for 40 years to complete, and was completely sacked by Al Mohads. This is why today, at times it can seem like an uninspiring pile of rocks, somewhat compensated by the impressively new museum built into the ground, which contains interesting exhibits and an auditorium showing what the opulent palace city would’ve looked like in its brief heyday.

GRANADAOn Jan. 2, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Castile and Aragon stood at the foot of a steep canopied pathway leading up to the palace city of Alhambra, perched on the edge of a large hilltop overlooking the city of Granada.

Dressed in Arab finery, the royals made the ceremonial walk to the top and entered the fort-like palace. Inside, Abu Abdullah Muhammad XII, the last Nasrid king (later known as Boabdil), was waiting for them, the key to his ancestral home, in his hand. As it was passed over, in what

was essentially a token gesture since the terms of surrender had been agreed months before, this signaled the end of nearly 800 years of Muslim and Jewish presence in the country.

THE ALHAMBRAOnce you have visited the Alhambra, you will spend your whole life yearning to go back. As the narrative says, this was merely home to the last ‘petty’ Muslim ruler of Al Andalus. By then, the ‘dreamy’ culture of Al Andalus, so significant in Europe’s development, was long gone. However the Alhambra does have a phenomenal knack

Following the stream leading to the water.

While many disbelieve the chances of there being natural springs in KSA, much to their astonishment there is at least one known spring in the country.

In fact, some local water companies boast of their water being sourced from natural springs. The specialty about the springs at Al Lith is that they are natural hot springs, something one would expect to find only in places like Europe or Japan.

On the Trail of a

Natural Hot Water SpringBy Mohammed Mirza

The JourneyThe ride to the town of Al Lith from Jeddah was an easy one for us as it is located on the major Jeddah-Jizan Highway. This same highway goes all the way to Yemen as well.

Once at Al Lith we knew that we wouldn’t be left with many options for food, so we decided to eat at a massive

Although they are commonly referred to as Al Lith Hot Springs, the spring is not actually in the town of Al Lith - it is situated around 50 kilometers from there. Close but not quite there.

food court in the main city. The place we stopped at has a plethora of restaurants and sits right on the main highway. It is also a popular stopover for buses carrying travelers to the southern parts of the Kingdom.

We had what Al Lith is known for – seafood. As expected it was tasty enough, despite its lack of spices.

We got off the highway and headed onto an adjacent single lane road. This road goes all the way to the hot spring, running through a number of small villages on the way. There were just two signboards on this road, which confirmed that we were heading in the right direction.

The road itself was flanked by small trees, and right before we reached the spring, the greenery in the surroundings seemed to increase.

A final signboard marked the location and from there the springs were a stone’s throw away. We parked our cars and walked towards the water.

On the Trail of a StreamThere were multiple streams gushing from the spring. We put our hands in the nearest one to us and much to our surprise it was refreshingly cold.

We couldn’t see where these streams started. We walked over them until we came across the biggest one. At that time we were told by a passerby that the hot spring was to the east of us. We decided to visit the hot springs later and explore the stream in front of us that meandered its way calmly into the unknown. Here it felt like we were in the middle of a tropical rainforest with all the lush green trees and luxuriant grass that surrounded us. The stream was flowing from the north and we walked by it towards its source.

I found it to be quite similar to a previous hiking experience I had in the jungles of Kodaikanal in India. The place felt so tranquil; a spot where one could just lie down, hear the birds chirp and listen to the pleasant sound of the flowing stream.

We continued walking, with the stream at times getting knee-high. There were areas where we barely made it through because of the thorny plants that blocked the way. We continued till we could go no further and by then the stream had gotten visibly smaller. Nearby was a place where the dense forest opened up into a desert that had a beautiful backdrop of chestnut-colored mountains.

Luxuriant grass greets us.

water from the spring, as hot springs are known for their high mineral content and medicinal properties.

Hot springs are produced when geothermally-heated groundwater rises from the

At the Hot SpringsWe then went on to where the hot springs were. From a distance we could see groups of people just standing by it and staring deeply into it. Some were even seen filling big plastic bottles with

earth’s mantle. They are normally found in volcanic regions. In KSA, this hot spring near Al Lith is the only known one in the country so far.

However, this hot spring has higher than bathing temperatures, so hot in fact that we couldn’t place our hands in it for more than a second; perhaps just enough to get our feet and hands cleaned by quick taps on the water. The hot springs were muddy and had algae growing in it, which is surprising considering its high temperatures.

On the whole, we were left in awe by the experience, as it was the first time for us to see one in real life. But what we enjoyed more than that was the trail of the stream that we followed. Definitely a place worth visiting.

HISTORIC KSA

The history of Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm.By Mohammed Mirza

The Mysterious Wells of Al Kharj

These wells have been used by the residents of Al Kharj and travelers for centuries, but of late the wells have dried up; though some amount of water can be seen in them after it rains.

While the exact time of the formation of these wells is not known, records show the area near the wells to have been inhabited for over a millennium.

Located less than a kilometer apart, two huge natural wells known as Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm are one of the biggest attractions of Al Kharj, less than an hour drive from Riyadh.

While some believe that they had been formed by a meteor shower, others disagree and suggest that they are actually massive sinkholes; sinkholes so deep that they have reached the watery beds within the earth’s crust.

Recently, the wells have been fenced off but it still hasn’t deterred visitors.

When the peninsula used to struggle for drinking water, Al Kharj had plenty of it, boasting of date farms and pastures that were unseen in the region. This oasis in the desert did not only have these wells as part of its water supply, it was also blessed with a network of ponds and natural aquifers. Considering its rich past abundant with water, an iconic water tower was constructed in the city that even has a revolving restaurant inside it.SO

AL JASRA HOUSE (Beit Al Jasra) Al Jasra House was a private residence of Shaikh Salman, ruler of Bahrain from 1942 - 1961. The rooms maintain the original and persevered furnishings and they surround a large courtyard which had a wooden platform (known as a seyam) that residents would sleep on during the hot summer months.

SHEIKH ISA BIN ALI HOUSE

Located in Muharraq, this was once the official residence of Sheikh Isa bin Ali, ruler of Bahrain from 1869 - 1932. Walking distance from the Bin Matar House, you can see that the building enjoys much of the same traditional style and architecture. One very cool highlight is the wind tower (badqir) fitted with vertical air ducts that direct the wind from the outside, providing a clever and natural cooling system for the home and right into the majlis.

BIN MATAR HOUSE

Salman Bin Matar was a renowned pearl merchant and caring humanitarian. Originally built as his majlis, this house was constructed using traditional Bahraini building styles, such as how houses close to the sea would use stones taken from the reefs and bind

them together using clay. The roofs were constructed from wood imported from Africa, date palm trunks and weaved palm leaves. The building now houses an art gallery as well as a small pearl museum showcasing tools of the pearl trade and a brief history of the Bin Matar family.

AL JASRA HANDICRAFT CENTRE

This two-floor center is home to many different types of traditional Bahraini craftsmanship. Be it the hammering of the chest maker, the spinning of the pottery maker, or the oud-strumming of the musical instrument maker, visitors can watch artisans as they hone their craft, interact with them and even purchase some of their skillfully created items.

There are three locations, but you definitely have to check out their branch in Shaikh Salman Fort – also known as Riffa Fort. The fort itself is architecturally mesmerizing, a highlight of which is their exquisite doors carved with Qur’anic verses. As was Arab custom, the date of establishment of the fort and dates of great events were also preserved with phrases carved on the doors.

One can relax in the café’s outdoor seating overlooking the valley and enjoy a traditional Bahraini breakfast. Instead of a menu, there is a set breakfast platter that consists of traditional dishes with modern touches, such as baked beans, foul beans, mini grilled cheese sandwiches and alo chab sandwiches.
