Dental  Implants

What  is  a  Dental  Implant  Exactly?  •  A  dental  implant  is  an  ar@ficial  tooth  root  that  is  placed  into  a  

pa@ent’s  jaw  to  hold  a  replacement  tooth  or  bridge.    •  Dental  implants  may  be  an  op@on  for  people  who  have  lost  a  

tooth  or  teeth  due  to  periodontal  disease,  an  injury,  or  some  other  reason.  

Procedure  •  Step  One:  Diagnosis:  A  panoral  is  an  X-­‐ray  taken  of  the  

pa@ent’s  head,  which  shows  the  bones  of  your  face  from  the  eyes  to  the  chin,  on  a  flat  film.    

•  Small  metal  balls  are  placed  in  the  area  of  the  planned  implant  as  a  reference  point  before  the  X-­‐ray  is  taken.  This  will  indicate  the  density  in  the  area  of  the  implant.

•  Step  two:    –   An  incision  is  made  in  the  gum  with  a  scalpel.  – A  series  of  drills  are  used  to  prepare  the  site  in  the  jawbone  for  placement  of  the  implant.  

– The  implant  is  placed  into  the  socket  in  the  jawbone.

•  Once  the  implant  is  in  the  final  posi@on,  a  sealing  screw  is  placed.  

•  The  gum  @ssue  is  sutured  over  the  implant  and  healing  is  allowed  for  about  four  months  before  the  crown  is  aRached.  

The  Prosthe@c  Crown  

•  The  most  commonly  used  materials  for  ar@ficial  teeth  today  are  porcelain  and  acrylic.    

•  Acrylic  teeth  contain  polymethyl  methacrylate  (PMMA)  resin  which  forms  its  basic  ingredient.  PMMA  resins  are  tough  plas@cs.    

•  These  teeth  have  greater  fracture  toughness  than  porcelain  teeth.  

Acrylic  Teeth  Vs.  Porcelain    

•  Both  acrylic  and  porcelain  teeth  can  be  made  to  give  a  natural  appearance.  

•  Acrylic  resists  wear  and  tear  of  jaw  movements.  – Long  las@ng  

•  Porcelain  is  stain  resistant  whereas  acrylic  is  not.  

Results  

•  Dental  implant  success  rates  well  above  90%  for  most  implant  pa@ents.  Similarly,  long-­‐term  success  rates  are  in  the  high  90%  range  and  are  likewise  improving.    

Advantages  

•  The  dental  implant  restores  the  following  to  pa@ents:  – Comfort    – Esthe@cs  – Oral  Func@ons  

Disadvantages  

•  Range  from  about  $3,000  to  $4,500.  •  Insurance  usually  par@ally  covers  these  prosthesis  or  may  not  cover  them  at  all.    

•  Can  get  very  expensive  if  the  pa@ent  needs  more  than  one.
