A Review of the wind engineering on the design of the shard: The wind engineering effects on the design of the shard was a really insighul lecture, given directly from Rodolfo Giannini of the WSP group. WSP

did a lot on the structural design elements of the shard; this included various wind studies. Did you know the design idea of the design of the Shard was based on this Canaleo (1) painng of early London filled with spifilled with spires?. Also did you know the Shard was designed with

top slits so the building would fade into the London sky line, but they found it would be too noisy; due to the wind within the (acousc)

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT DUBAI HAD DONE IT ALLDubai, United Arab Emirates has been awarded the right to host the 2020 World Expo. The Expo is expected to bring over 25 million visitors to the Emirate. The master plan led by global design, architecture and engineering firm HOK,HOK, looks brightly into the future while paying homage to the strong Emira culture and heritage.

The design based on the bid state-ment “Connecng Minds, Creat-ing the Future” features three separate pavilions symbolising opportunity, sustainability and mobility. There will be “innova-on pods” and “best pracce areas” in each pavilion. The three zones connect to form a central plaza to be name “Al Wasl” - a his-torical name for Dubai represent-ing “the connecon”.

Larger pavilions will be placed to-wards the perimeter while small-er exhibit spaces will be clustered around the centre. This layout creates a smooth pedestrian flow whilst increasing social interac-on among visitors - a tried and tested method inspired from the tradional Arabic marketplace “the Souk”.

The plan for the Expo site and re-lated infrastructure is desired to create a new benchmark for all events in the Middle East with one sole focus - SUSTAINABILITY. An iconic fabric structure covers

the main pedestrian walkways. Made from a photovoltaic fabric the structure acs as a solar-pow-ered sun shade. Working together with solar panels on the facades of building the plan is to capture enough sunlight to generate at lealeast 50% of the Expo’s energy onsite. Come sunset the fabric be-comes a giant projecon screen showcasing digital projecons and an illuminated display of lights.

Other sustainable strategies in-clude recycling wastewater, reusing materials and monitoring the carbon footprint.

At the end of the Expo in 2021, the three main pavilions will be com-bined and transformed into the Museum of the Future. A similar legacy concept to that adopted for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Watch this space as Dubai is about to embark on something the world did not see coming!

The

Twerking, Selfies and Royal Baby are but a few words that have taken meaning in our lives through the year of 2013, 31,536,000 seconds that have brought us together not only as a community within an area that accommodates the paving stones to our future lives but with the world as we gained mutual emoons during the mes of change that this period brought us.

With 1.11 billion of us refreshing our news feed on Facebook and with 400 million ttweets being made daily we all watched our screens closely as the years events caused us to associate ourselves with situaons that had no direct impact on our own day to day lives. Tragedies that caused opinionated review including that of February 15 when a meteor shot over the Ural Mountains' city of Chelyabinsk, Russia, causing shaered windows and minor injuries, to that of explosions at the Boston Marathon in April.

The year provided us with mes of mutual happiness across the world as we witnessed witnessed Tony Appleton, a town crier, announce the birth of the royal baby, George, outside St. Mary's Hospital exclusive Lindo Wing in London, on July 22. We parcipated, as Revellers threw coloured powders in the air during the Holi Fesval of Colours on September 15 and we joined the 94 countries that agreed that they would broadcast the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who. The first me a television programme has been watched globally in this volume, with over 10 million viewers watching from the comfort of the UK. We were all thumbs ready to hashtag and and status about all these proceedings.

196 independent countries coming together as 1 through social networking developments is an encouraging movement to be a part of, especially if trends provide aid to vicms such as those from Typhoon Haiyan earlier this year, but all this is a reminder to ourselves that we are not alone and that it is easier than ever to create individualist collaboraons with the people you have around you, be it if you need someone to explain an assignment to you or if you need to unwind at a CivSoc CivSoc event there are academics, colleagues, friends that are willing to help and have a mutual understanding of what you are feeling, all of which summang to your success and wellbeing during your me at Brunel and beyond.
