The Health Inspectors of Limpopo’s Department of Health are told that they will henceforth perform their duties under the guardianship of the Mopani District Municipality.

A fleet of vehicles were bought for the Inspectors, to use for their work.

The situation regarding the Inspectors is rather strange and the Director of Health Programmes in Limpopo’s Department of

Health is supposed to give permission for the Inspectors to go into the field, but he allegedly refuses to grant the necessary au-

thorisation. He refused to talk to us about the situation. Read our full report about this odd state of affairs inside on page 12.

Gail Mokwatlo, a 17 year-old local school girl and a model of Tzaneen’s Katryn Barwise’s Limpopo Beauty Modeling Academy, signed up with Style Diva; which is a national hair brand. She is their new face and ambassador. She will appear on all marketing material in 2014. Barwise (Miss Limpopo 2012) and owner of the academy says ”Gail is one of our star models and her hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.” And Gail? “I am going to give it my all”!

The Gr 12 pupils of Stanford Lake College shared some moving moments with their school mates and teachers during the matric valediction. However, in the final bidding farewell moments there was also some fun to be had and the spectacular and colourful “explosion” was yet again a special way of “painting”

their magic times during twelve years of schooling.

Three years and still no tangible results...The Inspectors are still waiting, three

years down the road, to be moved to the Mopani District Municipality. They spend their days in the office and don’t go out to do inspections.

The vehicles are gathering dust, since the Inspectors are confined to their offices.

Nicolaos Nicolaou and petrol costs and toll gates! Rather shop in Tzaneen... Local is lekkeHans Schouwstra polokwane is overrated in elk geval. jy moet in elk geval steeds 80km/p/uur ry.Molebatsi Masedi Very true - the trip is shorter and safer#ThankYouANC.Hans Schouwstra Mr Masedi you thanking the ANC for the safer and beter road. Who’s money do you

think they used. Not only ANC although they surely think that way.

Ilze Czubora Lets stay on topic, it costs fuel and really our shopping centers are much nicer and safer. And

our streets are better; I think Poloks must come shop here rather

Ronaldo Caroto Of mens meer sal ry & gaan ‘’shop’’, ja & nee.. vinniger & veiliger ja, maar bly egter moeite

toe is vebeter & breër gemaak. So thanks julle!

Barry Du Toit Hier is genoeg winkelsentrums in Tzaneen.

Frederick Pohl Thank you it is the goverment’s responsibility to spend the taxpayer’s taxes

responsebly, not the ANC there is a difference between the government (state ) and the ruling party, Mr Masedi. The trip is definitely easier but we have most of what we need in Tzaneen, support local business and let the town grow please. Only thing is to stop the big trucks using this road and force them to use the road past Mooketsi and Modjadjiskloof to reduce the accidents.

Koop maar lokaal...!Adel Stevens Not unless the petrol prize goes down a lot more. Tzaneen is perfect for shopping!Pieter Stolk And when the road is up and running I

am sure the ANC will slap a toll booth up on it as well!Tiekie Lessing Tzaneen bied dieselfde diens! Molebatsi Masedi Pieter Stolk, that’s rather cheap. Give praise where it is due.Pieter Stolk Praise indeed, until we are taxed even further, enough already with all the taxes! No its not

cheap, it’s called exploiting the nation for their own greed, why all the gov departments bankrupt, why are taxes so high yet service delivery has never been so poor, mmmm, if that is a cheap shot so be it ! Czubora, thanks for your like, I appreciate it!

Ilze Czubora Its the truth, we pay taxes in the fuel we use for fixing the roads now we have to pay even

more why?Molebatsi Masedi Cheap is Cheap is Cheap!Tania Vorster What about the main road in Modjadjikloof?

anders is.

AFFORDABLE HIGH QUALITY IMPORTED LINEN

— Bobbi Gerber

hul jongste prestasie.

The Great North Transport (GNT) bus company which prides itself with cultivating a caring culture, respect and being a law abiding transport company with a fleet of 540 buses, has been hit by allegations of malpractices.

This comes after complaints by bus commuters who use GNT’s buses as their mode of transport to Tzaneen.

According to allegations made by the commuters, the bus drivers have become arrogant and they overload the buses

with passengers, which make it unsafe and uncomfortable for passengers.

There are also reported allegations of arrogant service counter personnel at bus fare stations, who are not cultivating respect and a caring culture towards the commuters.

One of the passengers who spoke to the Bulletin on condition of anonymity said that such incidences occur frequently during month-end periods. Several attempts were made to get GNT’s comment on the allegations, but their phones rang unanswered.

‘GNT’s buses overloaded’

A Greater Letaba Municipality councillor for Ward 8 is being accused of having insulted members of the community of Rapitsi village, who approached her to discuss the water crisis in the area.

According to a concerned member of the community who claims to have fallen victim to the verbal abuse, the councillor, Ms Violet Mashapa, told them she will urinate in their water containers since she had no water to give to them. They stated that Mashapa also told them to back off and stop giving her a headache. She allegedly told the people not to worry her at home.

It is alleged that it is not the first time Mashapa lost her cool and insulted people she is supposed to serve. Two years ago she was accused of causing a stir in the RDP housing allocation in her ward, where some beneficiaries where made to jump the queue to get houses which belonged to

others. “We are now scared and we

do not know where to go, because the local councillor is our last hope,” said another concerned woman. Resident now call for the removal of the councillor, because they feel she does not put the interest of the community at heart. GLM spokesperson Lovers Maenetje said it is difficult to comment on hear-say, but she said they would encourage people who witnessed any incidents or who are aware of incidents involving the councillor, to submit a formal complaint to the office of the mayor so that it can be dealt with.

Maenetje said enquiries into the water problem at Rapitsi must be directed to the office of the Municipal Manager at Mopani District Municipality, as they are the only Water Service Authority in the district.

Nuwe leraarspaar in Letsitele verwelkom... Hy lewer sy intreepreek volgende Sondag (3 No-

Hul jongste kind, Sioné, is sewe maande oud.

Mr Addie Eastman of Fantique Trade in Letsitele won a trailer from Coca Cola (Northern Region) for the biggest increase in sales over a period of three months. His Coca-Cola sales rose by 34%. With him are Messrs Dzunisani Zithe, salesman, and Colin Jackson, regional sales manager

for Coca-Cola.

Nkandla se bouwerk is klaar. Maar die brouwerk in landsbestuur gaan voort...

The Message

Are you a Christian? What is the actual definition of a Chris-tian? As I see it a Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ.

Now if I am really a Christian then I should obey God in all my doings not just when I go to Church or when I feel like it.

It is not easy being a Christian in today’s world as there are so many distractions and thus we often make excuses as to why we have devi-ated from the path.

People judge you for what you do and not for what you are. Being a Christian also means that we are part of the community of Christ, in other words we are all brothers and sisters in Christ and it really does not matter what religious denomination we belong to, we are united by Christ.

Thus if someone says I do not go to Church because there are so many hypocrites in my Church, then I say to them find a Church that has no hypocrites in it and go there. Going to church does not mean I have to accept everything that is said or done there.

I go there to be with God in the presence of other like-minded people, I do not go there to judge oth-ers by my standards. If my relationship with Jesus is right according to my standards then why should I be concerned of what others might think?

The question arises, “Are my standards correct?” Thus by going to church I might just get a message through the preaching or just by being with others that perhaps my standards are not what Jesus wants of me.

There is an old hymn that has these words in it “God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform” Maybe by going to church I will get to know the Christ of love and see His plan for me. Blessings

Julle doen ongelooflike goeie werk! Baie dankie.

Wounded MalemaRaymond Hlungwani BA (Unisa), fi-nal year Journalism and communica-tion student at TUT, PYA member, Cell 073 855 1519, writes by e-mail: Expelled ANCYL Leader is Chewing more than he can swallow. Normally we say you cannot hit two birds using one stone, but he went even-

much further than two birds — to three!

Trying to swallow the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance and white people at the same time is the same as fighting a loosing battle.

First: before he and young people from Limpopo who were benefiting from his influence can visualize the EFF as the lead-ing party in parliament, they must project themselves as the leading opposition party in Parliament. To my mind that is far from being possible; I would rather call it the im-possible of the imposssibles.

Malema must stop making empty prom-ises to South Africans and use them as his source of income. What he is doing is the same as stealing from the poor. He is us-ing them (the poor) to climb the ladder of negotiating lucrative deals in the name of poor people, while they will remain waiting forever.

Checking his most utterance about his policies, there is a level of lack of education accompanied by huge contradictions and hatred towards the ANC and white people. Let me make it clear: he is coming good with his EFF as he always does.

He used the same strategy that he once

used when he revived Nationalisation and Expropriation of Land without Compensa-tion but his character and the tone of his lan-guage is ruining all his good plans.

People were so convinced about the EFF, but his daily tendency of speaking bad about white people, the ANC and everyone who seem to disagree with him, is stalling the potential success of the EFF.

The Marikana launch of he EFF was five times smaller than the launch of COPE — and COPE, which was viewed as a threat to the ANC — managed to get thirty seats in their first elections and it affected 3% of ANC and 27 came from first registered voters... so just calculate the seats off EFF, mathematically I bet that EFF will not even register three seats in parliament.

Cope walked out of the ANC with big in-fluential leaders, while EFF came out with Malema and the bodyguard Floyd Shivam-bu.

EFF is going to be like UDM, PAC... it might even fail to register a single seat.Malema is the one who is killing EFF since he knows that anytime he might even go back and beg for forgiveness from ANC. Julius Malema is wounded and he is busy using vulnerable and desperate young

people to take revenge on the ANC... Let’s support ANC and critisize it constructively... The ANC might loose power but not from the EFF. The ANC will be killed internally, but not now. Only Propaganda, Facebook,Twitter, Songs from a group of people is working for

EFF, but numbers are not allowing him.The way he speaks about EFF is not what

is taking place within EFF. He knows that he has not even reached 20 000 people and for a seat in parliament you need to have 40 000 people.

You go to Wits, UJ, TUT, UNISA and you get 100 students... The media will report be-cause journalists and interns want to build their names, but at the end the report does not build EFF but makes other parties to work hard.

He never tells people the truth about his dream government, but he keeps on inform-ing them about the wrong doings of the ANC. His greatest weapon is his mouth.

The ANC is South Africa, ANC is BRICS, ANC is AU, ANC is Govern-ment, ANC is ANC of people. Amen, Inkomo...

Jannes knik instem-mend en voeg by: “We go the extra mile.”

Wie is jou rolmodel?

Another local poet takes a bowIn and around Tzaneen more than just a handful of talented writers are to be found: Ms Beth Keller, Mr David Hilton-Barber, his daughter Bridget, Mr Howard Blyth, Dr Theo de Jager (who has already published three volumes of poems), the historian Prof Louis Changioun and now also Mr Jan Tromp, a local attorney.

Tromp’s first volume of poems, Bold New Dawn, is still hot off the press and sales are already unexpectedly high.

Poetry distilled from twenty years of Tromp’s life appears in this nicely illustrat-ed collection. His poems express the savage beauty and power of the created world as etched against his own “desperate” quest.

Tromp was born in Cape Town and gradu-ated with a law degree at the University of Cape Twn in 1986. About two years later he sold all he had and left South Africa on an open-ended journey by land and sea (leav-ing the Cape on a three-masted sailing ship!) — hence his dangerous escapades in the wild Atlantic, meditation in ancient monas-tries and solitary travel in remote regions of Asia all feature in the varied forms on offer in his first volume.

The adventure of the real destiny of man was, however, the actual journey he had departed on. Hy travelled in Europe and Asia, taught English in Greece and Hong Kong, lived with a Chinese family in the

back streets of Hong Kong.

And then he had a dream... and the onward journey to home began, pic-tured as roots by a stream.

Tromp is married to Andrea, a musician, and they have two sons.

He did the lay-out of his poems himself, us-ing style and form to lend more character to his poems.

Astonishingly slow progress in finalis-ing corruption and disciplinary inves-tigations in Limpopo’s is being made, according to a report by the Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime In-vestigation (the Hawks) and govern-ment’s Anti-Corruption Task Team, General Anwar Dramat, to Parlia-ment’s Select Committee on Finance.

It was revealed that after nearly two years only 15 of the 303 disciplinary cases identified have been finalised! Genl Dramat also failed to provide any details regarding the reasons for the slow progress or any of the “in-progress” cases.

The DA said in Parliament “it seems that the report was a clear attempt to keep parliament in the dark.

“The DA remains astounded that, given this information, Pres Zuma’s cabinet is contemplating lifting Na-tional Treasury’s interventions in Limpopo.”

Meantime the Cabinet spokesperson, Mr Phumla Williams, has indicated that the intervention is to be with-drawn and that the exit will take six months.

Should the intervention be withdrawn it would mean that provincial govern-ment departments will be handed back to the very officials who brought them to their knees in the first place.

“With on-going investigations, many of these same officials are still facing serious allegations of fraud and cor-ruption.

“It seems that Pres Zuma’s prime concern when the decision to inter-vene was made was the removal of his political adversary at the time, former Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale.

“Now that Mathale has been suc-cessfully ‘re-deployed’ to Parlia-ment, Cabinet seems content to let the people of Limpopo continue to suffer under a clearly dysfunctional and corrupt provincial administra-tion,” the DA said in a statement.

The party also announced that they will write to Zuma urging him that the decision to return the adminis-tration of Limpopo back to the pro-vincial government be preceded by the successful conclusion of the on-going investigations by the Hawks.

Prinsloo was vier jaar gelede in ‘n ernstige motorbotsing betrokke, waarin sy vrou dood is.

Health Inspectors of Limpopo’s Department working in the Mopani region have been confined to their offices since 2010 — all 28 of them!

It is alleged that the Department of Health made R20 million available to the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) in 2010, to al-low for the inspectors from Environmental Health Services to be moved to the MDM.

Allegedly a meeting was to be held be-tween the MDM and Mopani Health to dis-cuss moving the inspectors, but this meeting was later cancelled as consensus could not be reached between the parties.

We have been told that the disagreement was caused by allegations of irregularities with regards to the administration and pay-

ments of inspectors by the MDM.Another inexplicable situation is that the

manager of the health inspectors in Mopa-ni Health allegedly asked Dr Nkadimeng, the Director of Health Programmes at the Limpopo Provincial Health Department to provide authorisation for inspectors to go out for inspections. Nkadimeng allegedly refused to authorise the inspectors to leave their offices and perform their duties.

We called Nkadimeng, but he refused to comment on the matter. “I don’t know what you are talking about. I think the person who gave you this information can provide you with the facts”, said Nkadimeng before hanging up.

We have also been told that the Provincial

Health Department bought new vehicles for inspectors which have not been used yet — Toyota Hilux LDV’s, Fortuners and Chevro-let Captivas.

Our source also alleged that Mopani Health said that it would not compensate or reim-burse inspectors for transport expenditure if they travelled to various site inspections in their own vehicles. This dilemma caused in-spectors to remain in the office.

Health inspectors continue to earn their normal salaries, yet they do not go out to render services.

SARS wouldn’t budgeIt is also alleged that SARS taxed the in-

spectors for being paid for using their own vehicles and did not want to budge when told that they were not paid.

Schools, businesses and even hospitals which require the services of Health Inspec-tors are suffering due to the unavailability of the inspectors. Health Inspectors operate in various hospitals in Mopani, such as Letaba Hospital, CN Phatudi Hospital, Sekororo Hospital, Van Velden Hospital and others.

Provincial Health Spokesperson Adele van der Linde said ”the matter of Health Inspec-tors is currently being addressed by the Legi-sIature Petitions and Portfolio Committees who will report back to the public”.

Roles and responsibilitiesShe added: “There are roles and responsibi-

tities between the Department and the Mu-nicipality (MDM), clearly defined by the Act (Municipal Health Services Act) that have to be addressed. With regard to the inspectors not being allowed to travel: at the moment they should get approval from the district executive manager, not Head Office. Trav-elling was restricted in the past, to comply with austerity measures due to financial con-straints and as per the Section 100 plan.”

Our efforts to find somebody who could confirm how many inspectors are deployed in Mopani failed. We tried to speak to nu-merous officials, without success. We finally managed to speak to a Mr Max Lesufi who first wanted to know when we wanted to know and we said “immediately”.

He then replied saying there is no such thing as immediately and told us to give a time.

We also asked the MDM for their com-ments and their spokesperson, Mr Neil Shik-wambana, responded as follows:

Intricate process“You must appreciate that transferring of

staff from one institution to another is an intricate process that has a lot of human re-source technicalities which must be ironed out before the process can be formalised. As such engagements between the Mopani District Municipality and the Department of Health are still underway and are now on advanced stages to bring this matter to finality. As things stand, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between us and the Department of Health has been concluded and it will be signed soon. But as of now, the concerned staff remains in the employ of the Department of Health.

“The allegations that we received R20 Million from the Department of Health to specifically deal with the devolution of En-vironmental Health Inspectors are not true. Any envisaged transferring of money to Mo-pani District Municipality should follow the Memorandum of Understanding which is yet to be signed as I earlier indicated.

“If all things go according to our plans, all the outstanding processes will be concluded by the end of this year and the Environmen-tal Health Inspectors will be fully incorpo-rated into Mopani District Municipality as of January 2014,” Shikwambana said.

Unfortunately nobody was prepared to ex-plain why it has taken three years to get a MOU drafted and signed, whilst health mat-ters in the region have been compromised rather badly.

As the Festive Season closes in the SA National Blood Service values ef-forts from the community to increase awareness about blood donation.

One of these is the initiative from Mr Motinki Mahlo who will walk from Polokwane to Tzaneen, inform-ing those he meet about the impor-tance of blood donation and how it saved his life.

Mahlo received two units of blood when he was stabbed years ago and up till today he is grateful for blood donors who saved his life.

Mahlo together with Mr Simon Mo-gale will commence with the walk to-day from the Polokwane Donor Centre.

He will go through Magoebaskloof to Tzaneen where he will arrive to-morrow. A blood drive is scheduled

to take place at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre, where the two men will end their journey.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh above 50 kg and live a safe lifestyle, donate blood tomor-row from 09:00 to 14:00 at the Tza-neen Lifestyle Centre.

Don’t let life get in the way of life, donate blood. Your blood saves lives!

Long walk to help Blood Service

Vertel ons gerus as u snags (of bedags) wilde

DA denied of a public venueThe DA’s newly established branch at Shi-hoko outside Nwamitwa village has been de-nied holding a meeting at Mpapalati Primary

School for holding its branch meetings. The school’s governing body failed to reply to a letter which was submitted by the DA branch three months ago. It is alleged the branch was denied a venue because the school’s govern-ing body is composed of individuals who are ANC supporters.

UCDP visits Rikhotso villageA United Christian Democratic Party delegation led by MP Sipho Mfundisi visited the Thusang Setshaba drop-in centre at Rikhotso outside Nwamitwa, to donate food parcels to needy children.

Mfundisi’s visit to the improvised village comes after a plea by the centre’s board member, Mr Daniel Khosa, who said the UCDP is the only party which is close to the people. Mfundisi said that he came to Tzaneen on a dual mission of holding a church conference in Lenyeneye and he felt a concern for visting the impoverished village.

Ek moet wegkom.’

Die man is met Venter se beursie, k r e d i e t k a a r t ,

Homeless accuses mayorA woman who’s house collapsed during a rain storm in Ward 2 of the GTM accused Mayor Dikeledi Mmetle and MDM Mayor Joshua Matlou of empty promises after the two municipalities failed to build an emer-

gency house for her a year ago.Ms Annah Mathonsi received a tent instead,

which was damaged by strong wind. When she asked for the tent to be replaced, she was told she would not benefit twice.

Radio station in troubleMalamulele community radio station (MalaFM) has fired fourteen staff members due to misconduct and false qualifications,

The station has recently been in the news for eminent closure because of insufficient funds to pay staff salaries. Station director Moses Mashimbye said MalaFM came on the air in February this year and has not reached a stage yet to cover the salaries of its staff.

Big claim against SAPS“He is particularly unsuited to be an officer and to be in charge anywhere”

In yet another successful claim for unlawful arrest against the SA Police Service in Lim-popo, the Minister of Police and a police captain this time have to fork out over half a million rand in damages.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria handed down judgement in favour of 32 year-old Mr Rassie van der Laarse of Musina on Friday. Van der Laarse was unlawfully arrested by Capt Edward Sello Sekelele, stationed at the police’s border control at Beit Bridge in May 2010. He was detained for almost three days in what Judge A J Eberson described as “horrifying circumstances” . He was detained in a hopelessly overcrowded

container under filthy conditions. In his judgement Eberson awarded Van

der Laarse general damages in the amount of R344 162,01, with interest thereon (about R160 000).

R20 billion project launchedThe De Beers Venetia Mine, north of the Sout-pansberg, launched the construction phase of the development of an underground project on Tuesday. The company invested R20 bil-lion towards turning the current open-site mine into an underground mine by 2021.

Anglo-American PLC’s CEO and De Beers Group’s chairman Mark Cutifani said that a huge workforce of skilled women and men would make the job possible.

He said that De Beers would also continue to enrich and help the local communities, by providing employment and bursaries, build-ing houses and developing the youth. Ac-cording to Cutifani, first diamonds will be produced in 2021 and the mining production is set to continue into the 2040’s

Gloria aims for world titleMs Gloria Ramaano of Ngwemani ya Ha-Themeli silenced all the men in the province, when she was crowned the best truck driver in Limpopo.

Ramaano, the only female driver, was com-peting against 59 men. She won R5 000 cash, a microwave oven, a gold medal and a three-day weekend break with her partner.

Ramaano was back at work on Monday, driving a truck that collects rubbish bins around Thohoyandou, where she has been working since December last year.

She said her poor background had forced her into this career. “I always wanted to be a traffic officer, but when I passed matric at Gu-vhukuvhu Secondary School in 2000, I opted for a Code 10 driver’s licence as I did not have money to follow my dream.”

suiwer trans-Jukskei eindstryd gaan wees.

“When you win, say nothing; when you lose, say less.” – Paul Brown

Dit begin by die Hoërskool Warmbad, vanwaar atlete kan deelneem aan ’n marathon (42,2  km, Comrades- én Two Oceans-kwalifiseerder) of die 21,1 km, ’n 10 km of ’n 5 km-pretdraf.

The fine performances of Lesedi “TT” Kat-inga of Benny’s Care during the national finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Competition in Durban last month, are paying excellent dividends for the young player. The attacking midfielder recently received an invitation to attend a camp of Mamelodi Sundowns. At the end of the camp, a few players will be invited to join the Sundowns development academy, and Katinga is hoping that he will be one of them. Katinga hails from Musina. Soccer is his focus and the career path he would like to follow. “I have not thought beyond soc-cer and Benny’s Sports has been the right school for me, being the only sports school in Limpopo,” he said. He was groomed in soccer from an early age by his soccer star cousin, the late Lesley Manyathela.

Saturday the sixteen qualifying schools — arguably the best exponents of 7’s rugby in the northern half of the country converged on Skukuza for the final round of matches which would ultimately decide who would wear the crown of SA’s Save the Rhino 7’s rugby champions.

With the cream of 7’s rugby schools present – including the unbeaten and early favourites Garsfontein, Nelspruit, Monument, Waterkloof and Centurion — the table was set for a day of exceptional 7’s rugby.

Cool and at times rainy weather greeted the teams in the morning. A large number of of supporters had made the trip to Skukuza to support their respective teams. Superb talent and skill was evident for all to see. School boy 7’s rugby at its best, played in superb spirit and for a very good cause.

It was a monumental effort on the part of Merensky situated some 300 kilometres away to put on a tournament of this calibre. Brilliant organisation, hard work and dedication paid off and the school deserves to be congratulated on a fine effort. Plans are already in place to make this tournament the leading school 7’s tournament next year.

The cup final was probably the best game of the entire tournament, including the qualifying rounds. Garsfontein, unbeaten in the past two years of 7’s rugby, were looking ominous. They were in outstanding form. Nelspruit — the team that had pushed Garsfontein all the way three weeks earlier — were playing

with silky soft 7’s skills and were looking very determined. The table was set for a true rugby spectacle.

Garsfontein opened the scoring in the first minute. The

game was being played at a frenetic pace. Nelspruit were not here just to make up the numbers and responded with a score of their own. Soon in the second half Nelspruit hit twice, taking a 26-13 lead, but Garsfontein weren’t ready to give up and scored with a minute left on the clock: score 26-20 and a seven pointer could still win it for the tournament favourites.

Nelspruit poured everything into defence, whilst Garsfontein attacked with all they had left, and the large crowed were onto their feet. The horn sounded and Nelspruit were victorious. Not only are they the first school to be crowned “Save the Rhino” 7’s champions, but also the first school to beat Garsfontein in two years.

It was a classic battle, fit for a final; and a fitting end to a superb tournament. Nelspruit were also rewarded for their efforts with Ruan Nel being awarded the player of the tournament and the team winning a week for twelve players and two coaches at Reef Resorts in Mozambique (kindly sponsored by Mr Scotty Lawrence).

Merensky won the Shield final, beating Wonderboom 27-25 in the final; the bowl was won by Monument, beating Rustenburg 32-13 and the Plate was won by HTS Middelburg, beating neighbours Hoërskool Middelburg 18-6 in the final.

The pace slowed down on Saturday evening with the players and their coaches gathered around the braai fires. Stories abounded about what might have happened and all agreed next year things will be different. For now, Hoërskool Nelspruit are the champions and deservedly so. Well done too, Merensky!

Vossies presteer in Pro20

What started off as a casual discussion around a braai ended off on Saturday as one of the biggest 7’s tournaments in South Africa this year. With the focus on raising funds for and awareness of saving SA’s rhino’s, Merensky rugby set about organising an ambitious schools 7’s rugby tournament — which some said was “much too ambitious, too big, too soon”.
