Your Pathway to Lifelong Recovery

Dangers of Inadequate Mental Health CoverageW ell, here we find ourselves in the

middle of a Washington State finan-cial meltdown and the resulting very

sketchy Medicaid program while we watch the events in Arizona from afar. Arizona, in and of itself, has been an ongoing ‘event’ on its own for the past couple of years but now there has been a clear indication of what the cost can be to not treat mental illness and to not medicate for its manifestations.

Medicaid, along with several other health-care carriers, has slowed its payments to participating Providers significantly over the last eight months. The delayed payment prob-lem has been the cause of many participating Providers to end or severely limit their partici-pation with the program.

This all comes at a time of the ‘perfect storm’ of overwhelming change in legislation surrounding the delivery of healthcare to all this State’s (and the country’s) citizens cou-pled with an incredibly and seemingly endless downturn in the economy.

The effect is that there are really few people who know what to expect in terms of changes to healthcare delivery and claim and payment processes in the next few years.

Where will the neediest of patients go now for medical service? Olympic Psychiatric & Wellness Center (OPWC) is very directly concerned for the well being of mental health patients in Kitsap County who are being cut off of special state grants and other funding designated for mental health patients who, for one reason or another, do not also qualify for Medicaid. And Medicaid itself is adjusting benefits downward for mental health services.

OPWC is working very hard to develop

a reduced fee or a sliding scale option to assist with the care of these newly unfunded patients. Providing care under the current hard financial realities is very difficult with-out having the attentive case management that is very often required for this medically underserved population. Without a ready solu-tion and without proper care, mental health patients will again fill our emergency rooms, increase the crime rate and suffer a high rate of job loss. And they will go right back to the local emergency rooms where they have always received at least comfort in the past.

Increased use of emergency room services for non-emergency care is exactly the opposite and most expensive outcome the new national health legislation was written to correct. The cost to our State of lowering the level of funded mental health care will, truly, increase again the societal cost of the manifestations of mental illness as we have recently seen. It is very unfortunate that, during this perfect economic and legislative storm, the State and the Medicaid Program are abandoning these patients through poor management of systems and finances and additional payment restraints.

Many of the patients seen by OPWC are dual diagnosed patients with a drug or alcohol addiction which is often

in remission and with a separate psychiatric diagnosis that likely led to the drug and alco-hol abuse. We can expect now that there will be many relapses and it is not a comforting or safe picture we see out there for the next few years. We will be paying the additional cost of this lack of care for many years to come.

Cold temperatures and dry air can make it difficult to keep your skin clear, hydrat-

ed and looking beautiful during the winter months. After dealing with the pain and embarrassment, the last thing you want to do is to head into spring with dry skin and breakouts.

With these easy winter skin care tips, you’ll feel more confi-dent and proud to show off your clear, beautiful skin:

1. Don’t scrub dry, sensitive skin during the winter months. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), skin is drier than normal during the cold months and vigorous washing can irritate skin, making issues like acne even worse.

2. For those who suffer from acne, try the MaxClarity Acne Management System to kill acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin and exfoliate dead and damaged skin cells. The system’s combina-tion of benzoyl peroxide and sali-cylic acid will promote new skin growth and let your healthy, clear skin shine through.

Made with VersaFoam technol-

ogy, MaxClarity is a three-step process that includes:

Deep cleanser that cleans and •treats acne on the face, chest and back.

Advanced acne treatment that •dries quickly and fights acne dur-ing the day.

Rejuvenating toner, a leave-on •foam that exfoliates dead skin cells overnight to reveal a healthi-er, glowing complexion.

3. Don’t assume you can trade the swimming pool for a tanning bed while it’s cold just because the sun isn’t shining. Continue to keep your skin healthy by avoiding UV radiation — indoor tanning can lead to premature skin aging according to the AAD.

4. Be sure to use moisturizers when treating acne in winter months. In order to effectively treat your skin, dermatologists recommend gently washing your face first, applying acne medica-tion and moisturizer and finally applying makeup.

Approaching your skin with gentle care during the cold, dry months is sure to help tackle your breakouts and allow you to happily expose your fresh skin just in time for warmer weather.

Tips for fresh, clear skin even during the harsh winter months

Put your best face forward with clear, cared-for winter skin.

Can any hear-ing aid offer the ability

to hear in back-ground noise? Will I ever be able to hear in a restau-rant or at the ball game with all that excess noise?

“These are questions asked by most every patient I have had the pleasure to help hear better,” says Dr. Megan Nightingale of Peninsula Hearing Inc. “I have asked myself that question many times because I wear hearing aids too. Then, last April, I tested out a pair of Oticon Agil Pros and the difference is astonishing. However, my experience with them started out a bit rocky.

“My first experiences in back-ground noise with the new devices on were very disappointing to say the least! My perception was that I was not hearing as well because I was not hearing all the sharp high frequency sounds that

I heard with my existing hearing aids. Therefore, it seemed that something was missing. I related this to a colleague of mine when I was at the Oticon presen-tation booth at the American Academy of Audiology con-vention in April of last year. He then told me that his wife had told him the same tale as she first started to wear the Agil Pros. However, he stated that while we were in a very noisy area (the middle of a con-vention center with thousands of other people around), I wasn’t missing a word of what he was saying and that it is the perception of hearing much more naturally without all the extra high frequen-

cy noise that I was missing. It was then that I began to understand how fundamentally different these devices were.

“I continued to wear them and, after two months, I hap-pened to be at one of Poulsbo’s noisiest res-taurants with a group of seven, including chil-dren. It was one of those rare nice days and the place was packed! We were seated smack dab in the middle of the place with the noisy kitchen to my right. We had two tables put

together to seat all of us. I did not think of this until after we got out of the restaurant, but I realized then that I hadn’t thought about

my hearing the whole time we were there! I talked and listened to everyone with ease without hav-ing to ask for any repeats, even from the kids. A busboy dropped an entire tub of dishes and yes, it was loud and everybody turned their heads, (but) the noise did not send me to the ceiling!

“Needless to say, I am quite impressed and excited about this new technology, but is it for every-one? No. My initial impressions of the fittings I have gone through is that most tell me that they had to use the devices for a full two months to really hear the benefits of this technology especially in background noise.

“Can you catch my enthusiasm through this article?! I love what I do and am so happy to share this exciting new way of helping you hear (almost) normally again!”

Megan Nightingale Au.D has been in practice since 1990.

Foot care important in cold weatherBy Cynthia Edwards Kitsap Foot and Ankle Clinic

We are really getting into the cold weather these days. In addition to staying warm in our homes and offices, we need to pay close attention to our

bodies from head to feet as well. Remember, keeping our feet warm and dry provides good health throughout our entire health systems.

There are a number of ways we can accomplish this. Be sure to wear clean, warm dry socks every day. A good foot cream makes for a great therapy after your daily morning showers. Remember, and most impor-tantly, a regular check-up with your family podiatrist can alert you of any foot problems you may develop.

Be sure your podiatrist is a Board Certified Surgeon. Of course, your doctor should also be friendly, approach-able and knowledgeable.

For more information, please feel free to contact Dr David Gent at Kitsap Foot and Ankle Clinic at 360-377-2233.

AMI Women’s Diagnostic Center to open in Poulsbo

Advanced Medical Imaging is proud to announce the opening of a third site for

our Women’s Diagnostic Center. Our new Poulsbo office opening in March will offer state-of-the-art Digital Screening Mammography and Bone Densitometry Scans. The addition to our Port Orchard and Silverdale locations, the Poulsbo site will offer convenience and easy access to our customers.

The Poulsbo office will be located in the Cascade View Medical Center, near the Poulsbo Olympic College campus in College Marketplace. The center will be open Monday — Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and located on the first floor of the new building.

AMI was the first medical imaging practice on the Olympic Peninsula to install Digital Mammography. This technology offers higher detection, lower radi-ation, quicker exams and more accurate detection.

Our all-female accredited technologists will operate the equipment, while our board cer-tified radiologists will interpret results. AMI radiologists read nearly 22,000 mammograms each year. Studies have shown that the more mammograms interpreted, the more accurate the readings. Computer-aided Detection (CAD) is applied to all exams which

assist in increasing the detection of breast cancer.

DEXA Bone Scans or Dual Energy X-ray Absorption will also be offered at the Poulsbo office. This exam determines the density of bone mineral and is done on mainly women to determine bone health.

However, men are also suscep-tible to bone loss. In fact, 20% of all osteo-porosis cases are in men. Patients with low bone mass or osteopenia are good can-didates for this exam, which takes about 15 minutes. By knowing bone fracture risk,

the patient may possibly begin pharmacological therapy.

Our Women’s Diagnostic Center in Silverdale is a comprehensive breast diagnostic center where advanced diagnostics are used to evaluate breast concerns discov-ered on screening mammograms and/or ordered by your physician.

AMI facilities also offer High Field Open and High Field MRI, 64-slice and 16-slice CT, Ultrasound and Digital X-ray. AMI’s radiology practice has oper-ated in Kitsap County for over 33 years, has nine board certified, fellowship trained radiologists and a staff of 65 employees. We welcome patients from Kitsap, Jefferson, Clallam, Mason and Pierce counties.

Dedicated to promoting hearing health and provide high quality personalized care for

our patients and the community

Learning specific signs and symptoms of illness or injury can help determine what

type of care you or a loved one might need.

“Emergency rooms are for extremely sick patients or high-risk patients with chronic health conditions,” says Michael Armstrong, MD, a physician with Harrison Medical Center’s Emergency Services who has practiced emergency medicine for 16 years. “The role of urgent care centers is to provide quick, focused care for minor injury and illness.”

Emergency careSeek emergency care—or call

911—immediately if you think someone could suffer significant harm or die without prompt care. Look for:

Change in mental statusChest pain Coughing or vomiting blood

Difficulty breathing or short-ness of breath

Major burnsMental health emergenciesPoisoningSevere or persistent vomiting or

diarrheaSudden dizziness, weakness, or

a change in visionSudden or severe painUncontrolled bleeding

Urgent careSeek urgent care for conditions

that require attention but do not pose an immediate, serious threat to your health or life, such as:

AllergiesBack painCold or flu symptomsCoughing or bronchitisEaracheMinor burns or bruisesA rash, poison ivy, or allergic

reactionRising temperature

Scrape or cutSore throatSprain

Be preparedSpending just a few minutes fill-

ing out some forms is one of the best ways to prepare for an emer-gency. Forms that contain medical information about you and your

family can be vital. The American College of Emergency Physicians recommends that you complete the following forms for yourself and your children:

Medical history, which con-tains a list of your prescription medications, medical conditions, surgeries, family medical history, and emergency contacts.

Consent-to-treat — available in both English and Spanish — which lets you designate someone (such as a relative, babysitter, neighbor, or school nurse) to make medical decisions for your child in your absence.

Emergency information for chil-dren with special health needs (chronic medical illnesses or disabilities), which lists all prior medical procedures, allergies, and medications or foods to avoid.

Make copies of all your medical forms, and let others know where to find them. Also give a copy to your doctor. Update all of the forms regularly. And if you have a medical condition, wear some type of medical ID jewelry or carry a medical ID card in your purse or wallet.

To download free medical infor-mation forms, visit the American College of Emergency Physicians Foundation patient website at www.emergencycareforyou.org. Scroll over “Emergency Manual” and click on “Medical Forms.”

NORMALGood thermal symmetry with no suspicious thermal findings. These patterns establish a baseline against which future scans can be compared to detect any changes over time.

FIBROCYSTIC Fibroids generally show on a thermal scan slightly warm, and are determined by comparing to a second baseline image.

SUSPICIOUS Significant asymmetry and vascular activity is present in the left breast. Patient is advised to clinically in-vestigate thermal findings, make diet and lifestyle improvements & monitor progress via thermography.

DUCTAL CARCINOMAVascular asymmetry in the upper left breast was particularly suspicious and clinical investigation indicated a palpable mass. Biopsy confirmed a DCIS of 2cm and the patient had the tumor removed.

INFLAMMATORY CANCER This type of cancer cannot be detected by mammo-gram because it is not a “lump” cancer. Prior to the Thermogram, there were no signs of abnormality. This patient was referred to a breast specialist and her biopsy diagnosed the inflammatory cancer at a very early stage.

WHAT ELSE CAN THERMAL SCANS DETECT?

Heart Disease. Thermography is an effective diagnostic tool

that may save your life. Early

detection of inflammation in the body is a warning sign for heart

disease, as well as cancer, stroke,

blood clots and diabetes.

Carpal Tunnel. This often-misdiagnosed syndrome can be

confirmed or refuted with Thermal Scans.

Thermography can also detect: arthritis, gum diseases, sinus issues, back and neck pain,

immune dysfunction, digestive disorders, and determine the source of unexplained pain.

IN HONOR OF BREAST CANCER

AWARENESS MONTH

You’re getting warmer. Now you can get Thermal Scans to detect heat patterns that alert you to changes in the body before diseases develop. Thermography is the only way to detect inflammatory breast cancer, or irregular breast patterns before a noticeable lump is formed.

Unlike mammograms, Thermal Scans look at blood flow patterns, inflammation and asymmetries. This safe, painless screening takes less than 15 minutes — with no radiation and no compression.

A certified physician analyzes your scans, and returns the results within 24 to 48 hours.

By adding Thermal Scans to your annual exams and mammograms, you can improve your chances for early breast cancer detection by 95%. With one in eight women getting diagnosed, it’s never too early to start breast cancer prevention. Call 360-930-1954 for an appointment, and we’ll take $30 off your scan. And breast cancer off your mind.

If you are like most Americans, you’ve probably heard of acu-puncture. You understand the

basics — they place tiny needles into different areas of your body. But you probably wonder why they do that? What are they trying to accomplish?

And does it really work?Acupuncture is the oldest — and

most commonly used — medi-cal procedure in the world, dat-ing back more than 4000 years. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encompasses several methods designed to help patients achieve and maintain health. While acupuncture is the most often practiced component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is simply that — a component, an important piece of a much larger puzzle. Along with acupuncture, TCM incorporates adjunctive tech-niques such as acupressure and moxibustion; manipulative and massage techniques such as tuina and gua sha; herbal medicine; diet and lifestyle changes; meditation; and exercise (often in the form of

qigong or tai chi).According to Acupuncture

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the ability of acupuncture and Oriental medicine to treat nearly four dozen common ailments, including neuromusculoskeletal conditions (such as arthritis, neu-ralgia, insomnia, dizziness, and

neck/shoulder pain); emotional and psychological disorders (such as depression and anxiety); circu-latory disorders (such as hyper-tension, angina pectoris, arterio-sclerosis and anemia); addictions to alcohol, nicotine and other drugs; respiratory disorders (such as emphysema, sinusitis, allergies and bronchitis); and gastrointesti-

nal conditions (such as food aller-gies, ulcers, chronic diarrhea, con-stipation, indigestion, intestinal weakness, anorexia and gastritis).

Brain scans, ultrasound and other techniques have all been used to visually demonstrate the effectiveness of acupuncture. At the University of California at Irvine, researchers have shown that when a needle is placed in a point on the side of the foot that Chinese doctors associate with vision, the visual cortex in the brain “lights up” on fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans.

Neuroscientist Seung-Schik Yoo of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Bostonhas shown that when a needle is placed in a point called Pericardium 6 on the wrist, known in Chinese medicine as a point for nausea, the part of the brain that controls the vestibular system (which affects balance and nau-sea) lights up on scans.

Thermal imaging has also been used to show the physiological

changes that occur during an acupuncture treatment. By using acupuncture needles to signal the brain to aid in the healing of a particular area of the body (by increasing blood flow to that area), a marked improvement can be seen in the before and after thermal images. Areas that show significant inflammation — and typically with associated pain — have a remarkable improvement after treatment.

Robert Doane, a licensed acupuncturist and East Asian

Medicine Practitioner and owner of the Acupuncture & Wellness Center,

located in Poulsbo, has been using

thermal imaging in association with his acupuncture and herbal

treatments for over a year now — with exceptional results. “Seeing the exact area that is causing the prob-lem has allowed for a highly accu-

rate and effective treatment, and the clinical results are outstanding.”

says Doane.

Plants naturally purify homes and officesARAcontent

There should be a “take a plant to work” day. And while you’re at it, you should

keep one on your desk. Or, bet-ter yet, have two or more in your office and for every room in your home for cleaner, fresher air.

Most people spend 90 percent of their lives inside, where the indoor air they breathe contains at least 10 times more pollutants than the outdoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Instead of wearing a mask to work or around your home, there’s a natural solution: indoor house-plants. Plants filter the very air you breathe round the clock from common pollutants and continu-ously release oxygen and moisture in homes and offices.

“Plants act as the ‘lungs of the earth’ by giving off oxygen and taking in carbon dioxide,” says former NASA research scientist Dr. B.C. Wolverton, author of “How to Grow Fresh Air” and co-author with Kozaburo Takenaka of “Plants, Why You Can’t Live Without Them.”

After decades of research, Wolverton asserts that beside aes-thetics, research reveals that the mere presence of plants has been proven to “lessen environmental pol-lution, increase labor productivity and reduce the cost of health care.”

What’s in the air?

Modern life depends on technol-ogy, but ordinary products like paints, tobacco smoke, printer inks and even carpets hold hid-den dangers that plants can help reduce.

Today, there are over 80,000 synthetic chemicals that emit off-gases. Formaldehyde is one of the leading chemical compounds found in indoor air emissions and is a component in paper products, paints, upholstery, drapes and pressed wood products, Wolverton notes.

A recent study published in the British Medical Association’s jour-nal, Thorax, found that “children exposed to higher levels of VOCs were four times more likely to suffer from asthma than children who were not.”

Plant magicPlants improve air quality

through their natural “filtering” ability. Wolverton found that indoor houseplants absorb up to 87 percent of VOCs like ammonia, formaldehyde and benzene found in many homes and offices.

And certain indoor houseplants ‘clean’ the air every 24 hours. How? They absorb toxins into the leaves and root zone where they’re turned into nutrients. Some tropi-cal plants actually suppress air-borne mold.

Researchers at Washington State University studied the impact of indoor houseplants on dust reduction in office spaces.

When indoor houseplants were present, dust particulates were reduced by 20 percent compared to rooms without plants.

Working day and night

Some of the hardest working plants are the peace lilies, ferns, palms and spider plants.

Mike Rimland of Costa Farms, the largest indoor houseplant pro-ducer in North America, recom-mends epiphytic bromeliads and orchids, particularly in your bed-room. These natural botanical air purifiers make perfect bedroom buddies to refresh and beautify your room for a truly healthy, rest-ful night’s sleep.

Rimland’s favorites are anthu-riums. “They come in an array of colors, with blooms that last up to 13 weeks, are easy to grow, fresh-en the air and add exotic beauty to your bedroom,” he says.

A plant at workPut a plant on your desk and feel

happier, enjoy better health and be more productive. Wolverton rec-ommends office workers should have at least one plant in their “personal breathing space” where

most of the work is done to effec-tively remove indoor pollutants. Wolverton suggests two areca palms should remove sufficient VOCs to significantly improve the indoor air quality in a room.

Snake plants, broad sword ferns and rubber plants are among the top 10 air purifiers recom-mended by experts. They’re easy to grow, are natural humidifiers and remove airborne chemicals. Other green heroes are chrysan-themums and spider plants.

“Which plant you choose, and where you place your plants is important to reap optimum ben-efits,” says Rimland.

Consider the light, humidity, and temperature of your indoor spaces to determine the best choices for your home. Put a Majesty Palm in your living room, fern in the family room and peace lilies in the kitchen for beauty and maximum air cleansing benefits.

In your fast-paced life, plant-filled rooms help keep you in touch with nature and as Wolverton asserts, “Just the ability to view living plants enhances our psychological and physiological well-being.”

Portion Size is a major issue for weight control and maintaining a healthy diet.

According to WebMD there is a major portion distortion in the United States. Were you aware most restaurants serve two to four times the recommended serving size? You could be adding more than 100 extra calories resulting in a weight gain of ten or more pounds per year.

When you’re trying to eat healthfully, it’s essential to keep track of just how much you’re eat-ing. It’s all too easy to misjudge correct portion sizes when you scoop up a serving for your typical meal. By using easy comparisons of everyday items you can help keep meal portions in control.

For a free color poster of the Visual Guidelines for Portion Control, please contact KPS Health Plans at info@kpshealth-

plans.com or call 360-415-6518. KPS wants to make sure you take a step towards staying healthy.

Fitness should be fun and affordable. It should not be boring, time-consuming or

costly. Make your exercise routine a bit more exciting this year with some fitness activities you can do without an expensive gym mem-bership.

1. Sports hoop your way to slimmer shape

The thought of hula hoops prob-ably conjures memories from your childhood, but the fact is hula hooping is a great fitness activity. Sports Hoops are large, weighted fitness hoops that adults use to tone and lose weight. These affordable hoops are easy and fun to use, and can help you lose weight.

If you’re a certified personal trainer looking for something new and exciting for your clients, con-sider attending a certified trainer program where you’ll learn the knowledge and tools to facilitate

your own fitness hoop class and instruct personal training ses-sions.

2. Try a new activ-ity you’ve never done before

There’s no better way to get your blood pumping and your

body moving than trying some-thing you’ve never done before. Always wondered what it’s like to rock climb? Sign up for a class, or see if your local sports store has a free rock climbing wall. How about trying ice skating, surfing or even acrobatics? If a new activ-ity is a little intimidating, you may not want to do it alone. Ask a friend to do it with you and you’re sure to get a great workout and a wonderful memory.

3. Join a walking or running group

Walking and running are great physical activities that burn calo-ries and tone the body. Discover the parks and neighborhoods around you by planning regular walks. Consider finding a walk/run buddy to keep you motivated. Or, look online to find walking and running groups that plan regular outings and offer a sup-portive, team environment.

4. Join a sportRemember how much fun it was

to play sports growing up? Adult teams can be just as fun, provid-ing great exercise and camara-derie. Does your work or church group have a softball team? Maybe your friends like to bowl and you could form a bowling team. From broom ball, tennis, golf and more, team sports keep the spirit of healthy, friendly competition alive.

5. Visit your library and request workout DVDs

The library is a great com-munity resource and it can also help keep you in shape. Because checking out books and DVDs is absolutely free, the library is the perfect place to research new types of exercise to spice up your normal routine. Try searching for Pilates, yoga and aerobic DVDs. You likely can request them to be sent to your preferred pickup loca-tion too. Some books and DVDs are geared toward specific age groups, so teens, adults and even seniors can find appropriate work-out inspiration.

Any parent who’s sat up through the night with a sick child knows relieving their

symptoms is only part of your mis-sion. Easing the discomforts of cold and flu for your little one is a No. 1 priority.

“Watching your child suffer, even if it’s from something as minor as a nose that’s sore and chapped from repeated blowing, is a terrible feeling for any parent,” says Dr. Tanya Remer Altman, a mother and pediatrician who is a best-selling author and spokes-person for the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Relieving the dis-comforts related to cold and flu not only helps kids feel better, it also reduces stresses for their par-ents.”

“Dr. Tanya,” as she’s known to her patients and the millions who’ve seen her on the Today Show or who follow her blog, offers some tips to help parents make children feel more comfort-able while fighting a cold or the flu:

Flu vaccines are recom-•mended for everyone 6 months and older, but it’s not unusual for children to fear a shot. Ask your pediatrician about giving your child the flu vaccine in a nasal spray form. It’s available for chil-dren 2 and older, and provides the same protection and safety as the traditional flu shot.

Your mother probably •swore by chicken soup and she was on to something. Serving sick children chicken soup not only gives them the benefit of nourish-

ment while their bodies are fight-ing a virus, studies show chicken soup has anti-inflammatory prop-erties as well. Plus, it’s a popu-lar comfort food that most kids love.

Sore, •chapped noses add to the discomfort of having a cold. Tissues with added lotion, like Puffs Plus with Lotion, can help prevent chapping from frequent nose blowing and wiping. The strong, lotion-filled tissues can help children get more out of their nose blowing, ensuring they’re confident they can blow without getting anything

“icky” on their little hands. You can also use petroleum jelly or unscented ointment to soothe the

irritation and discomfort.

Another way •to help relieve a stuffy nose is to try a few drops of nasal saline and gentle suction-ing. A cool mist humidifier and a liberal applica-tion of Vicks on children older than 2 can also help, especially at night when lying down can make a child feel stuffy. Remember, how-

ever, never to use Vicks on children younger than 2 years old; it may actually increase the mucus in their airways.

Frequent hand-washing is •important to prevent the spread of viruses. Yet washing your hands a lot, especially in cold weather, can leave them dry, sore and cracked. Teach your children to wash their hands while singing “Wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them every day. Wash them with water and wash them with soap to wash the germs away” to the tune of “Row, row, row your boat.” Then follow up with a soothing lotion. You can find many fragrance-free varieties specially formulated for children.

When your child’s throat is •sore, he might be unwilling to eat or drink much. Offer a sugar-free fruit Popsicle instead. The cool-ness can help ease a sore throat, your child will get some hydration from the frozen juice and he’ll feel like he’s getting a special treat.

Make trips to the doctor’s •office fun by bringing a book or toy to keep your child occupied, and a snack in case she gets hun-gry. A special reward or treat after the visit is also a nice tradition.

Finally, don’t overlook your own mental comfort as well; call the doctor if you feel your child’s symp-toms are worrisome. “Parents often tell me they thought about calling, but didn’t want to be a bother,” Dr. Tanya says. “Most pediatricians are parents too, and they would rather take a few minutes to reassure you that your child’s cold symptoms will improve on their own than to not have you call about your sick child who really needs to be seen. Your pediatrician is there to help you, so if you feel something is important, pick up the phone and call.”

Stuck In The Plateau?Do you want to keep going, but your body just gives up? Do you exercise regularly, eat right, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, but still feel like you are “stuck” at a certain point? Do you find yourself frustrated becauseyou cannot get to the next level? Have you maximized your muscle strength when lifting weights and you don’tknow why? Does your body fatigue after running a certain distance and you’re frustrated because you know youcan run farther?

Most health conscious people are always looking for an “edge” when it comes to athletic performance whetheryou are a professional athlete or a weekend 5k warrior. Would you like to know that your brain is communicatingproperly with your body to ensure optimum performance? Here is how it works… Your head sits on a small ring-like bone called your “Atlas” (C-1) and “Axis” (C-2). (see illustrations A and B)

SUBLUXATION is a condition that occurs when the Atlas (C1) or Axis (C2) misalign causing themessages from the brain to the body to become distorted. These distorted messages will not onlyaffect your posture, but it will affect your body’s performance levels as well.

When these two bones become misaligned (subluxated), your brain in unable to effectively communicate with therest of your body due to an interference of normal nerve signals being sent from your brain to your body. Overtime, this will affect your body’s overall performance and bodily functions. Some muscles pull or are tighter onone side of the body in comparison to the other. Did you ever wonder why some muscles get “knots” and othersdo not? Have you ever noticed that your running shoes wear down on the sole from one side to the otherdifferently? (see illustrations C and D)

Subluxation causes your body to be “out of balance”Upper cervical misalignments can be caused by falls, auto accidents, sports, on-the-job injuries, concussions, physical or emotional stress, poor posture, and even birth trauma. At Upper Cervical Health Centers ofAmerica , our primary focus is to make sure that the top two vertebrae in your spine are functioning correctly. Weoffer a unique procedure to test whether or not your brain is communicating properly with your body. When yourhead is sitting correctly on top of your spine, your body is said to be “in balance.” Having your spine free ofinterference will give you that “edge” you have been looking for. Your body will thank you for it by showing anincrease in performance levels as well as an enhancement in overall health.
