The 2011 Saint Joseph’s women’scrosscountry teamreturnsallbut fourfrom last season. Head coach KevinQuinn isexcitedandconfidentheadinginto the year that this experiencedgroup can contend for the Atlantic 10title.

“The cross country team willdepend on experienced distance run‐ners this seasonwhowill be bolsteredby several middle distance track run‐ners thathavemovedup to the longerdistances,”saidQuinn.

Replacing last year's leadership ofJessDiCiccoandChristinaMorelliwouldappearadauntingtaskbutseniorKatieBarrett has stepped right in and takenon the mantle of responsibility.Entering her fourth year, Barrett pos‐sessesawealthofknowledgeandexpe‐rience.

Joining Barrett for their final sea‐sons on Hawk Hill are seniors KelseyRose andBeth Lambright. Rose comesintotheseasonfreshoffofearningAll‐Conferencehonorsinthe4x800mrelay.

“This group of seniors has growntremendously into true distance run‐ners,” said Quinn. “They have shapedthemselves into great models for theyoungerrunnersandareveryreliable.”

Saint Joseph’s junior class lacksdepthbutdoesnot fall short in talent.LedbyMaureenO’Donnell, theHawkswillrelyheavilyonthisclasstocomeupbig.O’Donnellturnedintopfiveoverallfinishes at the Princeton InvitationalandtheDuquesneDuals.

AlongwithO’Donnell, juniors LenaFinucane and SaraWalker will looktotakeonlargerrolesastheseasonbegins. Finucane helped the Hawks score at theAtlantic10Championshipslastseason,whileWalkerearned All‐Conference honors in indoor track lastseasonforhereffortsonthe4x800mrelay.

HannahFuller leadsalargeandgiftedgroupofsophomores.FullerandEmilyChappell finishedoutlastyearstrongastheyplacedinthetopfiveforSJUandhelpedtheteamearna12th‐placefinishattheECACChampionships.

JoiningthemareElizabethBarrett,ErinJames,DarcyO’Conner,PaigeO’Neill,LyndseySample andEmmaSlattery.Allwill takeonmore responsibilityin their sophomore seasons as they have obtainedanimportantyearofexperience.

Joiningthislargegroupofseniorsislonefresh‐man, Taylor Oskowiak. A native of Haddonfield,N.J.,Oskowiak looks tomakean impactas soonasshearriveshereonHawkHill.

Asthe2011‐12women’strackteamgetssetforaction,thewomenknowtheyhavethepotentialtoplace in the top fiveandcompete for thecrown inthe Atlantic 10 this season. The squad has a largenumberof returners and a talented groupof eightnewcomers.

Track captains Emily Coldren and Anna Caseywillprovidetheveteran leadershiptheteamneedsthisseason.AfteralreadyimpressivecareersatSJU,theywillbuilduponthemastheseasonbegins.

Maureen O'Donnell emerged last spring as arunnertobereckonedwithassheearnedECACAll‐Easthonorsintheindoor5,000metersandqualifiedforNCAARegionals in the steeplechase while set‐tinganewschooloutdoorrecord.Nowajunior,shecontinuesherpursuitofexcellence.

Continuedsuccessisexpectedinthesprintsandhurdles as the ECAC‐qualifying 4x100m squad ofAshley Williams, Francesca D'Angelo, StefaniZabilowicz and Coldren returns intact. Zabilowiczwaslastyear'stophurdler,settingschoolrecordsatboth55and60metereventsandscoringintheA‐10Championship hurdles both indoors and out.Zabilowicz and D'Angelo were also part of theschool‐record shuttle hurdle relay at the PennRelays.

In the long sprints, senior Lauren Wenzel andjuniorShannonGeddes willleadtheway,withsoph‐

omoresKatiePratt andJaclynKogut reinforcingthegroup.

Themiddledistancegroupreturnsseveralexpe‐rienced runners from the A‐10 Championship4x800m squad and the ECAC All‐East relay teams.TrackcaptainAnnaCasey,seniorKelseyRose,juniorSaraWalker and sophomore Emma Slattery alongwithsophomoreElizabethBarrett willcontinuetheHawksstrongperformances.

Senior cross country captain Katie Barrett andsteeplechase veteranMaureenO’Donnell will leadthegiftedgroupofdistancerunners.Additionalhelpwill come from seniorBeth Lambright, junior LenaFinucane and sophomores Erin James and EmilyChappell.

Atlantic 10 scorer in the high jump, juniorHannahBoyce, will be the top returner alongwithjuniorGenevieveRuppel.

Outstanding freshmen expected to contributeinclude Gabriella Becattini, a state indoor triplejump champion, state scorers in the hurdlesKaylaCharles andGeorgiaMason,statescorerinthehighjumpBriannaHunt, jump starKathrynPolaski andPennsylvania state scorer in the sprints GinaVanore.

KevinQuinn entershis46thyeardirectingtheSaintJoseph’strackandcrosscountryprograms,includingthe last26yearsastheheadcoachofthewomen’sprograms. A1962graduateofSaintJoseph’s,QuinnjoinedtheHawkathleticstaffastheheadcoachofthemen’scrosscountryandtracksquads inthefallof1966,apositionheheldfor23years. In1985,headded the title ofwomen’s cross country and trackhead coach tohisrésumé,andisnowenteringhis27thseasoninthatcapacity.InJulyof

1989,Quinnwasappointedtothepositionofassistantathleticdirectorforfacilities.In2001hewaspromotedtoassociateathleticdirectorforfacilities,apositionfromwhichheretiredin2007.QuinnisalsotheonlycoachtoserveaspresidentofboththeECAC(women's)andIC4A(men's)CoachesAssociation.

Anoutstandingeducator,teacher,andmotivator,QuinnhasledtheHawktrackprogramtogreatheightsduringhistenure.Hismen’scrosscountrysquadswontwoBig5titles,whilethe1984men’strackteamturnedinaseventh‐placefinishattheIC4AChampionships.His1967‐68men'strackteamwastheundefeatedAtlantic10ConferenceChampion.In1993thewomen’scrosscountryteamwontheAtlantic10championship,becomingthefirstwomen’ssportatSaintJoseph’stoaccomplishthatfeat.UnderQuinn’stutelage,the1997trackteamset10newschoolrecordsandnotchedSJU’sfirst‐everwomen’sPennRelaysvictory,earningfirstplaceinthe4x800mrelay.In2000,QuinnagaincoachedtheHawkstotheAtlantic10crosscountrytitle,earningconferenceCoachoftheYearhonors.Overthepastfiveseasons,Quinn’s charges have broken school records in track and field on 27 different occasions,includingsevenin2005‐06.

ThroughoutQuinn’scareerhehascoachedeightAll‐Americans,fiveIC4Achampions,fiveECACchampions,19maleindividual,onerelayandfourcrosscountryNCAAqualifiers,and

nine female track individual and fivecross countryNCAA qualfiers. He alsocoachedtheonlySJUNCAAchampion,DonnaCrumety(triplejump‘91).

Anoutstanding athlete inhis ownright, Quinn once held SJU records inthemileandtwo‐mileruns.AchartermemberoftheSaintJoseph’sTrackHallof Fame, he placed third in the 1961IC4A Cross Country Championships.Quinnalsoservedasoneoftheteam’stri‐captainsinhisseniorseason.Forhisdedication and achievements, he wasinducted into the Saint Joseph’sAthleticsHallofFamein2001.

Quinn currently resides inHavertown, Pa., with his wife Marie.They are the parents of six children:Kevin,Marie, Sean, Kathleen, Colleen,andBrendan.

FinneseyFieldhasbeenhometo10differentvarsitysquadsatSaintJoseph’sUniversityasitentersits83rdyear.Openedin1929ashometotheSJUfootballsquad,thefieldhasundergonenumerouschangesovertheyearsandhasbeenhometooverathousandSJUvar‐sitygames,matchesandtrackmeets.

Themostrecentupgradehappenedinthesummerof2008astheAstroTurf,laiddownin2001,wasreplacedwithnew,state‐of‐the‐artTigerTurf.Additionally,thetrackreceivedanewcoatofrubbermate‐rialin2009tobettersuittheathleteswhouseitforallseasons.

Hometothemen’sandwomen’strackandfieldsquads,thefieldhasseenothermodificationsdonetoitsinceitsinceptionin1929.Theprospectofa70,000‐seatbowledstadium for footballwasdashedwhenthesportwasdiscontinuedfollowingthe1939season.

Baseball re‐occupiedthespace in1947,callingFinneseyhomeuntil1959.In1960,theoriginalgrandstandandthehillsideseatingnearOverbrookAvenuewereeliminatedasVilliger(nowPost)HallandtheBluettTheatrewerebuilt.Intheprocessofthe1960construction,thefield’selevationwasraisedfivefeettoitscurrentlocation.

In1990,artificialturfreplacedthegrass,makingFinneseyatrulymulti‐purposefacility.In1994theinstallationoflightsfurtheredtheuseofthegrounds,whilenewbleachersin2003onthehillnexttoMandevilleHallwereanothertouchofrenovationtoahistoricstadi‐um.

SaintJoseph’smen’ssoccerstartedin1958andplayedeverysea‐sonbutone (1960)atFinnesey. Additionally,men’sandwomen’slacrossebegan in1993andhave calledFinneseyhome since theirinception, while thewomen’s soccer team began playing there in1996.ThefieldhockeyteamwrappedupitslastseasononFinneseyin2007.

Overall,thesitehasseen1,151gamesenteringthe2011‐12aca‐demicyear,andSJUteamshaveputtogetheratotalrecordof523‐581‐47over82years.

Claire Duncan enters her fourthseasonasassistantcoachoftheSaintJoseph'swomen'scrosscountryteamin2011‐12.A 2005 graduate of Penn, Duncan

was a three‐time Academic All‐American, while being a four‐year letterwinner. Shecompletedherdegree inpolitical scienceandenviron‐mentalstudiesinadditiontocaptainingthecrosscoun‐tryandtracksquadsatPenn.

Duncanbringsvaluableexperience to theprogramasshehas threeyearsofheadcoachingexperienceatthehighschool levelpriortoSaintJoseph's.Shespenttwoyearsasheadgirls’indoorandoutdoortrackcoachatGermantownFriendsAcademy(2006‐08),whilealsoservingasassistantcrosscountrycoach.

Prior to Germantown, Duncan was the head girls’crosscountrycoachaswellastheheadboys’andgirls’indoor and outdoor track coach at Friends CentralSchoolin2005‐06.

Duncan resides in Philadelphia with her husband,RobHewitt‘04,aformerHawkharrier.

TheSaintJoseph’sHawkmas‐cothasbeenflappingitswingsfor56years,havingcelebrateditsgold‐enanniversaryin2005‐06.

Oneofthemostfamousmas‐cots incollegesports, theHawk isbestknownforstayinginconstantmotion by flapping its wingsthroughouteverybasketballgameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph’smotto,“TheHawkWillNeverDie.”

Saint Joseph’s athletic teamshave been recognized with thenickname“Hawks”since1929.Atthat time, the school’s yearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudentbodyforasymbol. Morethan 100 submissions were nar‐

rowed,with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonandgrayathletesanditissuggestiveoftheaerialattackwhichhasmadeourfootballteamfamous.”Football,ironically,wasdiscon‐tinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkhaswonnumerousaccoladesandwasanomineeforinductiontotheMascotHallofFamein2008.

Junior Maureen O’Donnell led the Hawks in every meet whileJessicaDiCiccoandChristinaMorelli consistently finished in thesec‐ondandthirdspots.AimeeChegwiddenwasthefourthfinisherinthefirst fourmeetsandsophomoreHannahFuller,aftermissingthe firstthreeraces,madethetopfiveinherfirstmeetandthenjumpedouttofinishinthesecondspotthelastthreemeetsoftheseason.

TheHawkswent7‐0inthe5KattheDuquesneDualsatSchenleyParkOval.Althoughtherewasnoofficialteamscoring,thesquadfin‐ished with the lowest total score (57) out of the eight competingteams.O'DonnellledtheHawkswithafourth‐placefinish,blazingthecourse in 18:24, while Di Cicco andMorelli finished a secondwithineachotherinninth(18:43)and10th(18:44),respectively.Chegwiddenplaced13thin18:50whileseniorKathleenCaseyranthecoursecom‐pletedthescoringin21st(18:16).

Aweeklaterthesquadplacedsixthof14teamscompetingintheSpiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. O’Donnell finished 20th(21:49.7)inafieldof179runnersinthe6Kracewhilethetopfivefin‐ishedinunder23minutes.TheduoofDiCiccoandMorelliplaced28th(22:11.1) and29th (22:11.5), respectively,while Chegwidden crossedtheline13secondslater(22:25.6)tofinish32ndandsophomoreLenaFinucaneroundedoutthescoringin22:52.9(32nd).

AftertwoweeksofresttheHawkstooknineoftheirtopharriersto race in the 6K at the highly competitive Paul Short Invitational.O'Donnell trudged through the muddy course in 21:53 to take 75thplaceinafieldof367runnerswhilethetrioofMorelli(22:13),DiCicco(22:23), and Chegwidden (22:31) all finished in the 23rd minute toplace104th,123rdand135th,respectively.SophomoreEmilyChappellcompletedtheHawksscoringin23:04togivethesquadatotalof628pointsfor23rdplaceoutof41teams.

TheHawkswentontocompeteinthePrincetonInvitationalandhadtheirbestoverallperformanceoftheseasonwithathird‐placefinish out of 12 teams racing in the 6k. In a field of 168 runners,O’Donnell took second place in 22:17.10 while Di Cicco placed 18th(22:56.20),andMorellifollowedin22nd(22:59.90).Chegwidden(35th)andFuller(39th)roundedouttheHawksscoring.Thesquadtallied107points to finish behind Columbia (80) while Iona took first with 58points.

TwoweekslatertheHawkstraveledbacktoSchenleyParkfortheAtlantic 10 Championships. Despite the top five harriers finishing in19:00orlessthesquadplacedninthoveralloutof14teamscompetinginthe5Krace.O’Donnell finished inacareer‐best18:19totake23rdwhileFullercrossedthefinish in18:42andDiCiccotrailedthreesec‐ondsbehindin18:45.Morelli(18:56)andFinucane(19:00)wrappedupthescoringforatotalof214pointsbehindMassachusetts(200)whileRichmondwontheAtlantic10titlewith43points.

TheHawkscompetedintheNCAAMid‐AtlanticRegionalsatPennStateaftertwoweeksoffandplaced15thoutof29teams.O’Donnellplaced40thinafieldof204runnerscompetinginthe6KwhileFuller(22:44)andKelseyRose(22:45)finishedasecondwithineachothertoplace81stand83rd,respectively.DiCicco(22:59)andFinucane(22:03)completedthescoringandfinishedinthetop100.

Six Hawks competed in the ECAC Championships the followingweekendwithO’Donnellleadingthewayin41stplacewhileFullerfin‐ishedtwoplacesbehindin43rd.Rose,DiCicco,andChappellroundedoutthescoringtogivetheHawksa12‐thplacefinishoverall.

The squad graduated three of its top five runners in Di Cicco,Morelli, andChegwiddenandalongwith the lossof LauraFallerwhowas only able to compete in two races this season, will look to theyoungharrierstostepupinthe2011season.

11 seasons, setting seven school records and qualifying for theECAC Championships in 14 different events with 10 individualqualifiers.

The indoor season was highlighted by school records fromseniorStefaniZabilowiczinboththe55meterhurdlesandthe60meterhurdles,KristinAndrews in the500meter,andthe4x800meterrelaysquadofKelseyRose,EmmaSlattery,KathleenCasey,andAndrews.

Zabilowiczbroke the55meterhurdles record (8.41),withatime of 8.35 seconds at the Atlantic 10 Championships to takefourth place. Zabilowicz broke the 60 meter hurdles record at(9.06),attheArmoryCollegiateChallengewithatimeof8.99sec‐onds,placingsixth.

Andrews broke her own school record (1:15.00) at ECAC’swithatimeof1:14.61totakeeighthplaceandearnECACAll‐Easthonors. Earlier in the season she won the 500 meter at theGiegengackInvitationalin1:15.58.Andrewsalsoranthelastlegonthe4x800mrelaysquadthatfinishedinsixthplacetoearnECACAll‐Eastaccoladeswhilebreakingtheschoolrecord(9:01.36)setin2003withatimeof9:00.79.

JuniorMaureenO’DonnellalsoearnedAll‐Easthonorsforhersixth‐placefinishinthe5,000meterrunwithatimeof17:12.64.Shealsowonthe5,000meteratGiegengackandplacedthirdatthe Atlantic 10 Championships with a season‐best time of16:59.79.

Otherbreakoutperformancesincludedthe4x800meterrelayA‐10championsinwhichSaraWalker,Slattery,Rose,andAndrewscombinedforatimeof9:09.23toearnA‐10All‐ConferenceFirstTeamaccolades.

Nohjay Nimpson tallied wins in the triple jump at thePrinceton4‐Way(38’9”),GothamCupinwhichshehadaperson‐al‐bestmarkof39’6½”,andtheLafayette/Ridermeet(38’8¼”).

Alsoinjumps,juniorHannahBoyceearnedawininthehighjump at New Year’s Invitational with a height of 5’1 ¾” andimproved her jump to a personal‐best 5’3” at the A‐10Championships(12th).

Rose earned a win in the 1,000meter run (2:55.64) at theArmory Collegiate Challenge to qualify for ECAC’s whileWalkerplaced second to also qualify with a time of 2:56.15. BethLambright also had a win, finishing the mile in 5:16.15 at theGothamCup.

The outdoor season saw four more school records fall asO’Donnell andDi Ciccobroke school records in the3,000metersteeplechase and the 10,000meter run, respectively. O’DonnellbrokeherownschoolrecordattheBisonOutdoorClassicandfin‐ishedsixthasshecompletedthesteeplechaseinanECAC‐qualify‐ing 10:48.40 to break her previous record (11:14.18). Di Ciccobroke her own record (36:52.02)with a timeof 36:47.19 at theColonial relays. Her time also broke themeet record (37:11.49)andWilliam&Mary'sstadiumrecord(36:51.23).

O’DonnellandDiCiccobroketheirownschoolrecordsagainattheA‐10Championshipstoplacethirdandfourth,respectively.O’Donnellranthesteeplechasein10:32.58whileDiCiccofinishedthe10,000meterin35:42.56.

O’Donnellalsocompetedinthe3,000metersteeplechaseatthe NCAA Outdoor East Regional for the first time, finishing in11:05.51toplace43rd.

TheHawksalsobroke the4x100 shuttlehurdle relay schoolrecordforthesecondseasoninarowwithatimeof1:00.31atthePennRelays. FrancescaD’Angelo, Jessica Chen, ShannonCasey,and Zabilowicz finished in eighth place to break the previousrecordof1:00.95.

OthernotableperformanceswereZabilowiczwinning in the100hurdlesat theBig5meetwitha timeof15.53secondsandNimpson’stwowinsinthetriplejump.ShehadanECAC‐qualify‐ingmarkof39’8”attheDelawareOpenandamarkof38’2¼”attheBisonOutdoorClassic.Nimpsonwentontorecordapersonal‐best39’9¼”attheA‐10Championshipstotakefifthplace.

2010-11 RESULTSOnMarch 2, 1975, the idea ofwhat is

nowtheAtlantic10Conferencewasconceived.Whatstartedasaneight‐school,men’sbasket‐ball‐onlyaffiliationhasgrownintoa14‐univer‐sity, 21‐sport league that is universally hailedasoneofthebestconferencesinthecountry.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10—theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The GeorgeWashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts,UniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte, University of Rhode Island,University of Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University, SaintLouisUniversity,TempleUniversity,andXavierUniversity.

On June2, 2008,BernadetteV.McGladewasnamedthefifthfull‐timecommissionerinConference history, replacing Linda Bruno,whoheldthepositionfor13years.McGlade’sexperienceincollegiateathleticsasastudent‐athlete, coach and administrator spansmorethanthirtyyears.

“Bernadette’s deep experience witharguably the class‐act athletic conference[Atlantic Coast Conference] in the countrymakesusincrediblyexcitedtobebringingheron board as commissioner of the Atlantic 10Conference,” said Father Michael Graham,Xavier University president and president oftheAtlantic10Presidents'Council.

ThepresidentsandchancellorsofAtlantic10 institutions have made a strong commit‐ment to making the academic and athleticsequation work. Over the years, the leaguemembership has strived to better recognizetheacademicaccomplishmentsofitsstudent‐athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll,

which cites every Atlantic 10 student‐athletewitha3.5gradepointaverageorbetter,rec‐ognized1,247student‐athletesintheFall2007while 1,106 were named to the Spring 2008HonorRoll.

The league sponsors Academic All‐Conference teams in each of its sports andhonorsonestudent‐athletepersportastheA‐10Student‐AthleteoftheYear.In2007‐08,192student‐athletes earned Academic All‐Conference recognition. Moreover, theAtlantic10providesfourpostgraduatescholar‐shipgrantstoqualifiedstudent‐athletes.

TheAtlantic10Conferencehad34teamsamongthe712DivisionIsportsteamshonoredbytheNCAAwithpublicrecognitionawardsfortheirlatestmulti‐yearAcademicProgressRatescores. These teams posted multi‐year APRscores in the top 10 percent of all squads intheirrespectivesports.SaintLouisandXavierledtheAtlantic10inthenumberofhigh‐per‐forming squads receiving awards with sixteams each. In twenty of the twenty‐onesports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, theleague'sAcademicProgressRates (APR)wereatorabovetheconferenceaveragenationallyaccordingtothemostrecentdatareleasedbytheNCAA.

TheAtlantic 10Conference,witha totalpopulationofnearly 74millionpeoplewithinitsgeographicfootprintofeightstatesandtheDistrictofColumbia,will crownchampions in21 sports this season: baseball, men's andwomen'sbasketball,men'sandwomen'scrosscountry, field hockey, men's golf, women’slacrosse,men'sandwomen's indoorandout‐doortrack&field,women'srowing,men'sandwomen'ssoccer,softball,men'sandwomen'sswimming& diving,men's andwomen's ten‐nis,andwomen'svolleyball.
