ELITE LEAGUESFor well over 20 years, the best women’s hockey play-ers have competed in the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League, the National Women’s Hockey League, the Western Women’s Hockey League, and the Cana-dian Women’s Hockey League.

The Canadian Women’s Hockey League is the modern incarnation of elite club hockey, featuring teams in both Canada and USA. It was inaugurated by a group of play-ers, launched with clubs in the provinces of Ontario and Québec. The league – both its landscape and player pool – replaced the defunct NWHL in 2007.

Before the CWHL, the National Women’s Hockey League ruled the roost for nearly a decade. It was in fact an expansion of the old Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League, officially taking its new name more than half way through the 1998-99 season.

The NWHL initially featured teams in Ontario and Qué-bec, but expanded to feature teams in British Columbia and Alberta.

Those teams from the west eventually left to form the Western Women’s Hockey League, with additional teams in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Minnesota (USA).

Today, the CWHL is the place to be, with teams in On-tario, Québec, Massachussets (USA), and Alberta.

ROAD TO THE CLARKSON CUPSince 2009, the best women’s hockey players have competed for the Clarkson Cup, the trophy emblematic of elite club hockey supremacy.

The trophy was donated - and has been presented annually - by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada.

Initially, teams from both the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and Western Women’s Hockey League competed for the trophy. Since 2012, however, only CWHL teams have competed in a final playoff championship for the Clarkson Cup.

In the first five years, the Stars de Montréal won the Clarkson Cup three times, including the first-ever win on March 21, 2009 in Kingston, Ontario. The Stars won 3-1 over the Minnesota Whitecaps to claim the maiden title, with Sabrina Harbec scoring the winning goal.

The following year, the west’s Whitecaps won the Clarkson Cup after a 4-0 blanking of the Brampton Canadettes Thunder in Richmond Hill.

The Stars then won back-to-back Clarkson Cup titles in 2011 and 2012. In Barrie, the Stars won the 2011 title with a 5-0 shutout win over the Toronto Furies.

Then in Niagara Falls, the Stars claimed the 2012 title with a 4-2 win over Brampton.

Finally in 2013, the Boston Blades won the Clarkson Cup in Markham, ON. In the championship final, the Blades knocked off the two-time defending winners from Montréal with a 5-2 victory.

Lori Dupuis, who scored a goal and two assists, was named the champi-onship game MVP. Dupuis scored an assist on Engstrom’s winning goal.

From the regular season, it was Jayna Hefford who was named CWHL Most Valuable Player. She led the league with 26 goals. Jennifer Bot-terill, meanwhile, was named Top Forward after leading the league with 37 assists and 61 points.

Becky Kellar was voted Top Defender while Kim St-Pierre was voted Top Goaltender. Points-per-game leader Marie-Philip Poulin was voted the league’s Outstanding Rookie.
