When minister ofwomen and child de-velopment Maneka

Gandhi suggested registeringthe sex of every child in thewomb to ensure the girl childis not killed, she probably didnot understand the complexcalculus that Indian would-beparents go through when tohave a child, how many, andboy or girl. A glimpse into thisintriguing decision-makingprocess undertaken by about

2.5 crore parents every year isprovided by Census 2011data.

    Among women who had

only one child, the sex ratio

was just 782 girls to every 1,000boys born.

    This is much lower than

the overall sex ratio of the pop-

ulation, (943 females for every1,000 males), and even lowerthan the sex ratio for children

aged up to six years (919). But itis not yet the rock bottom.Among families with two chil-dren, the ratio plummets to 720girls. This is where the sharp-est drop has taken place, from742 in 2001. However, with threechildren, it improves to 814.

In families with four chil-dren, it improves further to

944 and by five, it reach es 1,005

    girls for 1,000 boys.

Sex ratio worsens in families with1-2 kids, improves with more than 3

Washington: In June 2012,President Obama nominatedChandigarh-born legal lumi-nary Srikanth (Sri) Srini-

vasan to the Federal Court ofAppeals, the highest ever ju-dicial appointment of an In-dian-American, in what wasthen seen as putting him ontrack for an elevation to theSupreme Court. That unpre-cedented prospect has bubb-led to the surface sooner thanexpected following the sudd-en death in Texas on Saturdayof Justice Antonin Scalia, 79,reportedly of natural causes.

While it may appear inde-corous to discuss a replace-ment even as Scalias body isreturned to the capital, US po-litical and legal circles areagog with the implications ofhis death. It evens a nine-member SC bench that typi-cally bent 5-4 in favour of Con-servatives, with Scalia lean-ing heavily to the Right. It pro-vides Obama an opportunityto reverse the benchs Righ-tist orientation, and he wasquick to seize the moment, sa-

ying he will fulfil his consti-

    tutional responsibility tonominate Scalias successor.

That may be easier saidthan done. Given the momen-tous nature of the appointm-ent, with political and ideolo-gical overtones, Republicansimmediately signalled theywould block any Obama no-mination, saying it should co-me from the next President.
