MORGENZON - A car travelling from Standerton to Er-melo with five occupants overturned on the R39 on Satur-day, 25 June. The accident occured at 09:30, approximately 10 km before Morgenzon.

According to the Communication Officer, Constable Pou-lose Nzimande, the 26-year-old driver of an Opel Corsa lost control of the car in the misty conditions and it rolled sev-eral times. Two minors between the ages of 8 and 10 were killed in the crash. The driver and a 24-year-old female pas-senger suffered serious injuries, while another female pas-senger escaped with minor injuries. Cst Nzimande reports

that the two injured people were taken to Standerton Hospi-tal for treatment.

The driver was reportedly in a critical condition when the paramedics assessed him. The children’s bod-ies were taken to Standerton government mortuary. Reports confirmed that the driver is a resident of Kosmos Park, but the four passengers were not yet identified at print. The SAPS believe the passengers were possibly hitch hik-ers and might have been picked up along the road. In the meantime Standerton SAPS have confirmed that the driver of the Corsa was indeed from Kosmos Park after his iden-

tity emerged when his older brother arrived at the station to report that his young brother has taken his car from home without his permission. The younger brother allegedly used the spare key to drive away with the car.

When Standerton SAPS followed up on the accident, it was confirmed to be the same car reported missing. On Sun-day, 26 June, Cst Nzimande reported that the 26-year-old driver also died in the hospital on Saturday night. The death of the driver brings the death toll to three. Cst Nzimande confirmed that a case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation. DM

STANDERTON - Lending a helping hand to those less fortunate than themselves is what pushed Two-for-Joy Social Club in Sakhile to adopt an orphanage at Rooikoppen. The Club was established more than a decade ago by 35 members.

On Friday, 10 June, Two-for-Joy Social club declared their commitment by officially adopting the Rooikoppen Orphanage at Saving Grace Early Childhood Development Centre. accommodates four girls between the ages of eight and 12. They all attent a local primary school.

The 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals proposed the standard stop sign and it was accepted worldwide. It is a hexagon shape with a red background, white border with the uppercase word ‘STOP’ imprinted. This means that it is not an ‘only in South Africa’ sign and must be adhered to by all road users.

This is what you should do at a stop sign: Come to a complete stop at a stop sign or stopped intersection, at the painted line, before the crosswalk or just before the stop sign. Think, count to at least three after stopping to ensure you have taken the time to scan for any oncoming vehicles and that they have had the time to see you. Keep a close eye on approaching vehicles from all directions (including the street directly across from you), and then, when it is safe, move forward through the intersection. Remain aware of all approaching vehicles so you can react as necessary.

Why don’t drivers stop at stop signs? Most reasons can be chalked up to impatience or inattention, but here are some common reasons drivers have cited for ignoring or rolling through stop signs. “No one was there!” Many drivers will approach and pass stop signs late at night because there are fewer drivers on the road. Just because there are not normally people on the roads does not mean you should make decisions like you are the lone late-night driver.

“I was distracted!” Distractions can come from all angles – cell phones, radios, passengers, external factors, exhaustion and more can take your mind or eyes off of the road. Sometimes, especially at night or while driving unfamiliar routes, drivers completely miss stop signs or other road signs.

“I was in a hurry!” Impatience can often play a part in risky driving practices; the temptation to shave a few minutes of time off your commute by speeding, rolling through stop signs or just plain ignoring traffic laws is strong and can be deadly.

“I slowed down!” Simply slowing down at a stop sign is not sufficient. In many cases, stop signs are placed at intersections where visibility may be impaired (either by the road you are on or by cars approaching on other roads), so it is vital to come to a complete stop so you and other drivers have time to react.

Regardless of the reason, hundreds of thousands of car accidents occur each year when drivers run stop signs and many of them result in tragic deaths of drivers, passengers or pedestrians.

This is what could happen if you run a stop sign:• You could strike another car that has right-of-way. If you do not come to a complete stop, you risk striking another vehicle which may be rightfully entering the intersection before you.• Another car could strike you. Depending on the direction of the oncoming vehicle, this could put you, your passengers or people in the other vehicle in great danger.• You could hit a pedestrian or biker. This is especially dangerous at night or in areas of low visibility, where stop signs are especially vital. Make sure to drive in a safe and predictable manner to help pedestrians and bikers cross intersections safely.• You could be ticketed for failure to stop.

Motorists are urged to heed to stop signs, even if it just for the safety of your passengers and other road users. JD

This is what STOP means...

A stop sign is erected at an intersection in-structing motorist to come to a total stand-still, observe other traffic and, when it is safe to do so, to proceed. Many a person taking children to school are up in arms because of the total lack of obedience by other road users, putting their loved ones in danger and also cause damage to their means of transport.

STANDERTON - A man of foreign na-tionality’s cell phone store was recently bro-ken into and cell phones were stolen.

The SAPS started an investigation and a tip-off led them to a house occupied by an-other foreign national on Tuesday, 21 June.

Upon arrival, the occupant swallowed il-legal substances in front of SAPS officers. When they searched the house they found a bag containing various types of cell phones.

He was arrested for the possession of sus-pected stolen cell phones.

The store owner who reported the bur-glary was called to the station to identify the cell phones.

He positively identified 25 cell phones as the ones stolen from his store.

Twenty other cell phones remain un-claimed. Captain Johannes Nhlabathi ap-pealed to members of the public who might

have been robbed of their cell phones, to come to the station to identify them.

He warned chancers not to come, because officers will apply strict identification tac-tics to make sure that correctly identified cell phones are claimed by rightful owners. Cpt Nhlabathi confirmed that a 27-year-old suspect was charged with the possession of stolen goods. He was due to appear in court soon. DM

Etiquette - how to conduct yourselfUnfortunately, many people consider respect for the rules of etiquette as something shameful, considering it a feature of classy aesthetes who are removed from real life.

Herewith, a few simple etiquette rules which every self-respecting person should know.• If you say, ‘I invite you,’ that

means you pay. You may say, ‘Let’s go to a restaurant,’ and in this case, everyone pays for themselves. If a man offers to pay for a woman, she can agree.

• Never pay a visit without calling first. If someone comes to see you without warning, you might be wearing a bathrobe and hair curlers!

• Don’t put your phone on the table in public. By doing so, you show how important a role this device plays in your life, how bored you are of what’s happening, and that at any moment you’re ready to stop a useless conversation and once again check your Instagram feed, answer an important call, or try new levels in Angry Birds.

• Don’t invite a girl on a date if you’re going to be texting all evening.

• A man never carries a woman’s handbag. However, he can take her coat to carry it to the cloakroom.

• If you’re walking along with someone and your companion greets a person you don’t know, you should also greet them.

• Most people believe that the only proper way of eating sushi is using chopsticks. However, this really depends. Men, unlike women, can eat sushi with their hands.

• Your shoes should always be clean.

• Avoid meaningless talk on the phone. If you need someone to talk to, it’s better to meet with them in person.

• If someone offends you, you shouldn’t return the favour or raise your voice to the person who insulted you. Don’t sink to their level. Just smile and leave the ill-mannered company. JD

STANDERTON - The woman accused of the murder of the late Advocate Yandisa Maron-go, who was found murdered in 2014, appeared at Standerton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 21 June, to make a formal bail application.

The 49-year-old woman from Volksrust is facing two charges - the first charge for house break-ing and the second for murder.

The suspect was granted bail of R10 000 for both charges. The court further ordered her to hand her passport, her car and its documentation over to the police and report at Volksrust Police Station twice a week.

She will not be able to leave

the Volksrust area without the permission of the investigating officer. She was ordered to ap-pear in court on 15 July.

The magistrate notified the suspect that the trial will be conducted at the High Court at a later date.

The court heard that the first accused, who was arrested for possession of the deceased’s car in 2015, skipped bail. The 26-year-old man from Newcas-tle was granted bail two weeks ago after spending time in cus-tody and he was also reportedly due in court to face a charge of murder. When he did not arrive, the court issued a warrant for his arrest. DM

STANDERTON - On Wednesday, 22 June, mem-bers of Standerton SAPS cluster abandoned their weekly boardroom meeting and took to the streets to clean crime hot-spots in town.

A team of police officers from all seven cluster sta-tions, dressed in civilian clothes descended on the taxi rank, Shoprite Centre, and the Junxion Centre where they conducted search procedures for two hours.

Two people were arrested for public drinking and fined R250. Eight foreign nationals were arrested for failing to produce legal documents that legitimize them to be in the country. A 27-year-old woman was found in possession of 59.9 kg of dagga and a 19-year-old man was found in possession of 136.7 kg of dagga.

Operation Clean-Out was launched following a crime wave in the CBD. Criminals are sowing panic

and fear and the business sector is operating under a constant fear of attack following resent cases of rob-bery. Crime numbers are sky high in the residential area Kosmos Park has experienced several house rob-beries recently to the extent that Kasselman Security Services has offered a R5 000 reward for anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of house robbers.

Captain Johannes Nhlabathi, said that the SAPS will continue with the operation and he paid special tribute to all officers who made several arrests within the short time of two hours. He confirmed that all the suspects will appear in court as soon as possible. The operation is conducted by Station Command-ers, Community Policing Officers, the K9 Unit, the Crime Intelligence Unit and the Family Violence and Child Protection Unit. The operation was led by Cluster Commander, Brigadier Lentsoane. DM

STANDERTON - Frustrated parents of pupils from Hlobisa Pri-mary School in Sakhile took to the streets on Wednesday, 15 June, and marched to Lekwa Local Municipality’s offices to hand-over a memorandum that expresses their anger and frustration about what they call an environmental hazard to their children’s health.

The march follows numerous attempts by the school’s governing body and parents to get the coal business that operates next to the school to be removed or relocated, after it was discovered that the business is a health hazard. According to the memorandum handed over to the municipal authorities, the matter was brought to the at-tention of the former Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr Thabang Mak-wetla, when he had visited Standerton in 2006. It is reported that the Premier instructed the then Mayor of Lekwa, Councillor Juliet Radebe, to implement the removal of the coal business next to the school. Nothing to that effect was done. In 2009 parents com-plained to the former Municipal Administrator, Jabulane Sindane, who was also reportedly convinced that the coal yard was a poten-tial health hazard to the children and subsequently instructed the removal to be implemented - still nothing was done.

The chairman of the school’s governing body, Tshidiso Mosea, said that the current Municipal Manager, Linda Tshabalala, also promised to look into the matter after he sent environmental offic-ers to assess the situation almost two years ago. To this date nothing has been done about the impending health hazard. Cosmos News published the story in 2015 and the Municipal Manager indeed

PROVINCIAL - The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) monitors the dam levels across the country daily and almost all the dams remain lower than they were this time last year.

Pupils testing positive for anabolic steroids could be suspended from participating in school sport for a year, and those found guilty of selling the performance-enhancing drugs face being expelled. That is if a new policy is given the green light, which would make South Africa the first country in the world to implement a drug-testing programme for anabolic steroids in state schools.

These are the sanctions that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport wants the governing bodies of state schools to impose on errant schoolchildren. The move to get the institute to conduct testing for banned performance-enhancing drugs at public high schools came a step closer to realisation after a concept document was submitted two weeks ago to the department of basic education’s director general, Mathanzima Mweli, for approval.

This document details how principals will have to delegate power to the institute to conduct either random or “with notice” tests on athletes for prohibited substances. The test would be done after taking into account the best interests of the athlete as well as his or her safety, and would require reasonable evidence to be provided that the learner was using a prohibited substance.

If the proposal is approved, testing for prohibited substances could start as early

as next year and would be confined to high schools. For the first year of the programme, which is a partnership involving the institute and the departments of basic education and sport and recreation, R2 million would be set aside for drug testing and a further R1.75 million for training. Plans outlined in the concept document include:•Getting governing bodies to add sanctions

for learners found guilty of taking banned drugs to the school’s code of conduct;

•The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport developing anti-doping education content to include in the school curriculum;

•Getting the institute to train teachers and coaches at school level on what to do when an athlete tests positive for a banned substance; and

•Asking the sports department to bring retired athletes on board to run anti-doping programmes at schools.

Importantly, the coach, teacher or any other staff member who is complicit “in the performance-enhancing substance abuse behaviour of an athlete” will also face a sanction, but this is not spelled out in detail in the document. The concept document defines anabolic substances as hormone and metabolic “modulators”, diuretics and other masking agents. Urine samples will be taken from the schoolchildren who are tested and

then sent to a laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency for analysis.

A child who tests positive will be suspended from participating in any school sport until the disciplinary process is finalised. The institute said that, should the programme go ahead, it would not disclose the identity of any child who tested positive or the name of their school, but would use the finding for statistical purposes alone. According to the protocol, schools would be obliged to inform the institute of any schoolchild suspected of taking, possessing or trafficking in banned substances.

The basic education department’s acting director for the safety in education directorate, Charles Wilson, said, in terms of the proposed policy, they would help provide anti-doping training to sports coaches at school and district level. He said Mweli would have the final say over which sporting codes would be targeted for testing, adding: “My thinking is it would be rugby and athletics. “We are hoping that the education and training of sports coaches will start this year, so we can start implementing testing next year.”

He said schools would have to register directly with the institute to confirm their acceptance of the drug protocol, before being targeted for education and training programmes and testing. Wilson said his

department would contact those schools that did not register and encourage them to do so. Khalid Galant, chief executive of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, said South Africa is regarded internationally as a pioneer as a result of its moves to introduce drug testing at state schools. “During our annual global conferences, I met representatives from the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, and they were all looking at how we were going about it and how they can implement a similar programme.”

He said the protocol applied specifically to school sports, and that the institute’s anti-doping rules would apply when athletes participated in a competitive sport under the auspices of the various national sporting federations. (Provided by Mail & Guardian) JD

During a motivational day held on 3 June for Gr 12 pupils, all ten of the top learners from Holmdene, Zikhetheleni, and George Hofmeyer schools received certificates for their hard work. Trophies were presented to the best performing school (Zihetheleni), the most improved school (Qondulwazi) and for the best managed school (George Hofmeyr). Guest who were present on the day are, from left to right, Mr Tsotetsi and Mr Radebe (Deputy Principal and Principal of Holmdene), Mr Gambiza (Principal of Qondulwazi), Mr S Ndlovu (Circuit Manager, Lekwa East), Mr Mbangu (Gr 12 mathematics teacher at Zikheteleni) and Ms M Kriel, Principal of George Hofmeyr.

DK

STANDERTON - During the Medal Stablefort Golf Competition that took place on Saturday, 25 June, at the Standerton Country Club, 16 players took to the T-boxes later than they planned. Thick and heavy fog hampered their tee-off times and after waiting for more than an hour, the first players decided to give it a go.

Even though it was like playing in the dark with no indication of where the players’ balls lie, the players scored good scores. Tertius Brits won the day with 40 and Deon Grimsell in second place with his 39. Nick Momberg and Jacques Scholtz both scored 38. Patrizia Lombard and Nic Momberg were the only players to play a two-club. JD
