The Iowa Central Community College Dental Hygiene clinic, located on the main campus in Fort Dodge at One Triton Circle, Applied Science and Technology (AST) building, room 102, prepares the student to provide comprehensive therapeutic oral health care and preventative education directly to diverse population groups.

Iowa Central Community College Dental Hygiene Student Clinic is an educational institution that provides preventative and oral

hygiene client treatment. In general, all persons who are able to afford the time and the cost will be treated at the school.

All treatment is provided by dental hygiene students. Dental hygiene students are supervised by licensed dental hygiene faculty and/or a licensed dentist. The care provided by our student hygienists is done in such a way that gives priority to education. This may result in longer treatment appointments than would occur in a private dental practice but at a greatly reduced fee for services because your time is your contribution to the student’s education.

We accept XIX, cash, check and credit cards for payment of services. Payment for dental hygiene treatment is required at each visit. We also offer a senior citizens discount!

Buyer Beware: Unsafe Used Tires For Sale

(NAPS) Whenever you hit the road, it’s your car’s tires that hit it first, so it’s important they be in good shape.

The Problem Unfortunately, bald, damaged, unsafe used tires are available for sale in every state. New tires must meet stringent federal safety standards to be sold in the U.S. In fact, U.S. tire testing standards are the toughest in the world. Worn-out tires that have been removed from service can be resold as “used,” however, with virtually no restrictions.

A Solution The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), the national trade organization for tire manufacturers, suggests there should be a law against that. “We are working to educate policymakers and consumers about the dangers of unsafe used tires and will advocate state laws to prohibit the sale of used tires with conditions that pose a significant motorist safety risk,” said Dan Zielinski, RMA senior vice president. “Consumers may think used tires are a bargain, but saving a few dollars isn’t worth the risk if your choice includes a worn-out or damaged tire.” To demonstrate the problem, RMA and its members purchased several examples of unsafe used tires from used-tire stores. Each tire exhibited one or more conditions that are clearly unsafe: worn-out, visible damage to the tread or other portions of a tire, or being improperly repaired.

What To Watch Out For Tires worn to 2/32 of an inch are considered bald and are dangerous. Such tires no longer provide sufficient grip on the road, particularly under wet conditions. Tires with damage exposing steel belts or other internal components threaten a tire’s structural integrity. Improperly repaired tires can suffer loss of inflation pressure or have hidden damage that may contribute to tire failure. “Any used tire is a risky proposition since it’s impossible to know the service history of a tire used by someone else,” Zielinski advised.

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE The Season for Cast-Iron Pans Dear Heloise: Several years ago, I

bought my wife a new CAST-IRON FRYING PAN that is now starting to develop small rust spots on the cooking surface. I later learned that cast-iron pans are supposed to be “seasoned” to prevent this from happening. Can this pan be fixed, or should we just buy a new one? And what is the proper care of cast-iron cookware? -- Jim T., via email

Don’t throw out the pan! Rust can develop when the pan is air-dried or even scrubbed with steel wool. The pan should be washed and dried immediately. Many cooks (me included) put the pan back on the still-hot stove burner to dry.

To season or re-season, use hot water, only a drop of soap and a nylon scrubbie or plastic brush to clean (NEVER place the pan in the dishwasher). Rinse and dry well. Then, to season, use melted vegetable shortening. Wipe it all around the pan until the entire surface is covered. Place in a 375 F oven, upside down on a cookie sheet. “Bake” for an hour. Turn the oven off and let the pan cool completely before taking it out. -- Heloise

DON’T WASH Dear Readers: Are there certain

foods you should NEVER wash before cooking? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, raw meats and poultry should NOT be

washed because of possible cross- contamination from the juices spreading to the sink, counters, dishes and utensils. Cooking meats thoroughly will kill all the bacteria that may be present.

People sometimes soak meat, like country ham, because they think it reduces the salt content. But the USDA advises that this does not remove much salt anyway, so don’t. -- Heloise

NO-STICK S’MORES Dear Heloise: I have a hint that I

wanted to share. We love making s’mores around the campfire but don’t like the mess that the sticky marshmallows make on our hands.

Instead of taking the marshmallow off the stick with our hands, I make the s’more while the marshmallow is still on the stick. I have someone else hold the stick while I use two pieces of graham cracker to sandwich the marshmallow, and then just pull the stick out. No, not all pies need to go in the refrigerator. Pies that contain eggs (for example: pumpkin, cream or custard pies) should be refrigerated. Fruit pies, however, don’t have to be refrigerated (unless your kitchen is on the warm side) and can be kept at room temperature for about two days, if they last that long.
