For The Week Of September 18th to September 24th. CAPRICORN December 22– January 19 Dodging someone, Capricorn? So is everyone else. Hiding out will get you nowhere. It’s time for a confrontation. A business transaction goes off without a hitch. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18 You give, and you give, and you give some more, but come on, Aquarius, the well is about dry. Take time out to replenish your spirits. Start with a walk in the park. PISCES February 19-March 20 Parting is such sweet sorrow, or is it, Pisces? If a relationship has soured to the point of no return, it may be time to put an end to it once and for all. ARIES March 21– April 19 Youngsters start throwing around hints at home. Don’t take the bait, Aries. This is one objective they need to obtain on their own. A work project comes to an end. TAURUS April 20-May 20 Tricky Taurus. You’re a master at turning things around and making them work in your favor. A supervisor is counting on you to work your magic in a meeting. GEMINI May 21-June 21 Cunning you are not, Gemini, but when pressed this week, you will show the world that you can be. A lucky guess brings rewards to a friend.
CANCER June 22-July 22 Business proposals begin to stack up. Some are better than others. Do your homework, Cancer. A phone call from home brings good news. LEO July 23-August 22 Savvy investments and small budget cuts get you back in the black and ensure you stay there. Celebrate with a mentor, Leo. An inquiry begins. VIRGO August 23-September 22 Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to planning a special event. Know your audience and select various activities that will keep their interest, Virgo. LIBRA September 23-October 22 Dreary days and cooler temperatures bring on the urge to retreat. Don’t, Libra. Young ones are counting on you to lead the way this week. SCORPIO October 23-November 21 A friend makes their choice crystal clear, and it does not involve you. Don’t take it personally, Scorpio. There are other plans in the work that will involve you. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21 Greed takes hold at home, and conflict ensues. Jump in and teach the art of compromise, Sagittarius. A dead-line is extended and resources are increased.

(NAPSA)-There could be
good news for many of the
estimated 40 million people
age 65 and over in the coun-
try today. They can expect to
have a longer, happier and
healthier retirement experi-
ence if they are exercising
their minds, bodies and
spirits.
Why Work Out
Exercise not only helps
increase bone density and
functional abilities, it can
improve mental and emo-
tional health, support a sense
of purpose and provide
opportunity for socialization.
Exercise For Older People
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and
Prevention, older adults need
at least 150 minutes of mod-
erate-intensity aerobic activi-
ty such as brisk walking
every week and muscle-
strengthening activities on
two or more days a week.
Residents in Brookdale
retirement communities
across the nation enjoy
Brookdale Fitness B-Fit, a
unique program that aims to
maximize seniors' functional
abilities. The classes have
residents perform exercises
that incorporate components
of tai chi, brain-challenging
movements and meditative
relaxation.
Offered at least three days a
week, the Brookdale pro-
gram is based on the latest
guidelines of the American
College of Sports Medicine.
The new guidelines include
cardiovascular, resis_tance
training, flexibility and neu-
romotor components of
exercise.
"The neuromotor aspect
includes tai chi movements
as a way to improve balance
and reduce falls," explained
Kevin O'Neil, M.D.,
Brookdale's Chief Medical
Officer.
Resident Martha Jean Wells
praises the program. "It
helps both physically and
mentally. Plus, there is some-
thing everyone can do. I'm
84, and there are ladies older
than me who are participat-
ing."
Each class can be cus-
tomized to meet the needs of
each resident, regardless of
their challenges. It's one of
several Signature Programs
by the leading owner and
operator of senior living
communities. Others include
Optimum Life Health Talks,
educational opportunities for
residents to learn about
health and wellness topics
from nurses or therapists;
The Ageless Spirit, a pro-
gram that provides opportu-
nities for residents to explore
the role of spirituality in
their individual lives, health
and overall well-being; and
My Life Story, a reminis-
cence and writing program
that helps residents share
their life story with loved
ones.
Through its Innovative
Senior Care program, the
company also offers a range
of outpatient therapy, home
health, personalized living
and hospice services.

(NAPSI)-Just about every American farm
family includes an unsung hero: the "farm
mom." Doing everything from keeping the
books to combining the fields, 30 percent of
today's primary farm operators are women.
They grow our food, our economy and our
way of life-while also growing the next gen-
eration. The America's Farmers Mom of the
Year contest recognizes these amazing
women.
From Arizona to Maine, vegetable farms to
cattle ranches, supporters shared their
favorite farm mom's contributions. American
Agri-Women whittled down the vast pool of
worthy nominations to five regional winners.
From the Northwest: "An orthopedic surgeon
raised in Detroit, she knew in her heart she
was born to be a Montana rancher. She
received an Angus bull instead of an engage-
ment ring."
From the Midwest: "She is a strong voice for
agriculture and is an amazing example of a
woman farmer. I could not imagine a better
partner."
From the Southwest: "Mom takes great pride
in promoting agriculture and her life as a
dairy farmer. Every year, up to 1,500 chil-
dren come to visit the dairy. My mom has
always inspired those around her."
From the Northeast: "Travel
with me to the gently rolling
hills of Ohio to meet a true
champion for agriculture. My
mom has raised pigs, cows,
sheep, corn, beans, wheat,
children and now grandchil-
dren."
From the Southeast:
"Elizabeth is the glue that
holds our family together.
Whether she is driving a trac-
tor, feeding cows or caring for
her family, she is 100 percent
on the job."

(NAPSI)––America's farmers feed
the world: According to the
Department of Agriculture
(USDA), each U.S. farmer grows
enough for 155 people. Now,
thanks to technology and their own
hard work, they should be able to
continue to do so, despite what
Mother Nature has been throwing
at them lately.
For example, a major problem for
corn growers is drought. According
to the USDA's Drought Monitor,
many places display drought condi-
tions ranging from severe to excep-
tional, including regions in the
Western Great Plains. To help
farmers across the corn-growing
area, there are drought-tolerant
corn plants with deep, strong root
structures that can withstand
drought conditions and still yield a
bumper crop.
Scientific Proof
Consider this: A root comparison
study of randomly selected corn
seed products was conducted at the
Gothenburg Water Utilization
Learning Center in Nebraska. It
showed that a thick, deep root
structure lets corn plants reach cru-
cial moisture locked within the sub-
soil, absorbing up more water and
nutrients and ultimately leading to
healthier ears and yield potential.
"They can produce 700 to 800 ker-
nels per ear," said Michael
Petersen, former soil scientist with
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture and lead agronomist
with Orthman Manufacturing, a
tillage and earth-moving company
that participated in the root dig
excavation. "And when they do
that, we know that we can produce
big corn."
Because more water and more
nutrients are found between 30 and
80 inches below ground, Petersen
explained, deeper roots help plants
stand up to lengthy drought stress.
Rooting For Good, Strong
Corn
"Deep, strong roots mean that your
plants are going to be anchored to
the soil very well. They are going
to have a chance of rooting down
and accessing the soil moisture and
using that to help farmers protect
their yield in a drought year,"
added agronomist Mark Reiman.
He said that despite moisture stress,
the deep-rooted corn had healthier,
more consistent ears than others.
"We actually saw very nice corn
ears that had no tip back," he said.
"They were filled nicely, pollinated
nicely, from the end of the ear to
the tip of the ear. In contrast, ker-
nel set was spotty and ear size was

Fall Farm 2013
(NAPSI)-Today, the average U.S.
farmer feeds 155 people. Part of this
success is due to a group of dedicat-
ed yet largely unheralded agricultur-
al workers; the professional applica-
tors who help ensure a safe and
abundant food supply.
A Demanding Job
They spend long hours in the
field, day after day, racing the clock
and pushing their application equip-
ment to the limit to spray or spread
fertilizer and crop protection prod-
ucts over millions of farm acres.
Operating their highly sophisticat-
ed machines is a demanding job that
takes skill, endurance and dedica-
tion. The professionals who operate
RoGator self-propelled sprayers
from AGCO Corporation, for
example, must navigate 33-foot-long
machines through narrow rows of
crops, while simultaneously control-
ling multiple switches and functions,
including 120-foot spray booms
longer than the wingspan of a mid-
size commercial jet.
Comfort and Safety Advances
That's why recent advances in appli-
cation equipment have focused not
only on providing greater precision
and productivity, but also improved
cab comfort and safety.
Enhancements to RoGator include:
• Unobstructed cab visibility in all
directions during operation due to a
six-post cab design with large win-
dows on all four sides, including a
wide, panoramic front windshield
and curved windows in the corners.
• Wider cab entry for easier opera-
tor access; a one-level, slatted walk-
ing platform for firmer footing; and
a lower first step from the ground
onto the walkway.
• Right-side armrest that holds all
the functions needed for field opera-
tions, so operators don't have to
reach or search for a control while
operating the machine.
• Positive cab pressure and a three-
level air filtration system that will
keep the air inside the cab virtually
dust- and odor-free.
• Sound-dampening material strate-
gically placed throughout the cab to
reduce external noise.
• An "air ride" cab suspension sys-
tem and semi-active seat suspension
for a more comfortable ride over
rough field terrain.

September 15-21, 2013 Each year since 1944, the third week of September has been recognized as National Farm Safety & Health Week. This recognition has been an annual promotion initiated by the National Safety Council and has been proclaimed as such by each sitting U.S. President since Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the first document. Over the years, the development and dissemination of National Farm Safety & Health Week materials has shifted to the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety. NECAS is the agricultural partner for NSC and has been serving the agricultural family and business community since 1997.

The 2013 theme for the National Farm Safety & Health Week is “Working Together for Safety in Agriculture” . Go to our website, www.necasag.org for information and public service announcements related to this year’s theme. We are most grateful to our friends at Illinois Farm Bureau for their work in developing the logo again this year. For the past few years, there has been an increasing focus on the safety and health issues in Agricultural Confined Spaces. Several agencies are working together to develop safety and rescue programs dealing specifically with confined spaces.

SAFETY TIPSSafety: Off The Road
(NAPSI)-Whether you're having fun on an ATV (all-terrain
vehicle) or in an ROV (recreational off-highway vehicle),
staying safe can be as simple as ABC and 123.
A. Learn the differences between the types of vehicles:
ROVs, also called side-by-sides, have a steering wheel, accel-
eration foot pedal and brake foot pedal. ATVs have a han-
dlebar for steering, a throttle controlled by a thumb lever,
and hand levers and a foot pedal for the brakes. Most ATVs
are designed for one rider who straddles the machine, out in
the open. With an ROV, it's important to wear the seat belt
and keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.
B. Get the size right: It's critical that ATV riders be the
right size for their machines. Children should not ride
adult-sized ATVs, though youth-model ATVs let kids as
young as 6 enjoy riding under adult supervision. ROVs are
only for operators age 16 or older with a valid driver's
license.
C. Protective gear: Riders of either vehicle need proper hel-
mets that meet Department of Transportation standards,
eye protection, gloves, long sleeves and pants, and sturdy
boots. An ROV should have seat belts, a rollover protective
structure, side retention
features and handholds.
1. Ride right: These
vehicles are for off-road
use only and should be
taken exclusively on
designated trails.
2. Ride sober: Neither
should ever be operat-
ed while
under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
3. Get safety trained:
Both should be used
only after proper train-
ing, through the ATV
Safety Institute
(www.atvsafety.org) or the Recreational Off-Highway
Vehicle Association (www.ROHVA.org). Then go have fun-
safely-off-road.

The theme “Working Together for Safety in Agriculture” is one that hits home and reminds us that it is everyone’s responsibility for safety both on the farm and the rural roadways of America. The new data for the Department of Labor shows the agricultural sector is still the most dangerous in America with 475 fatalities, which equals 21.2 deaths per 100,000 workers. When combining all labor sectors the death rate was 3.2%.

Fall Farm 2013
(NAPSI)-There's genuine excitement in rural America about whatto many may seem a surprising subject: livestock manure. That'sbecause farmers can get improved nutrient efficiency from it as anatural fertilizer source, the animal waste is easier to handle andapply, and some of the odors associated with release of ammoniagas are being reduced-all thanks to some recent technology avail-able to livestock producers.
When farmers have hundreds or thousands of hogs or dairy orbeef cattle, millions of tons of waste are generated that must bemanaged in an environmentally sound way. In most cases, themanure is held in pits or lagoons before being applied to fields asa rich source of vital nutrients such as phosphorus (P) and nitro-gen (N), both of which are essential to crop growth and health.
Technology BenefitsThe recently developed technology that helps livestock producersmanage all this waste more efficiently is More Than Manure(r)(MTM(r)) Nutrient Manager, from SFP(r), a company that spe-cializes in products that improve fertilizer efficiency. When addedto in-ground manure pits and lagoons, MTM can help break up"solids," making the manure easier to pump, transport and apply. It can also significantly reduce ammonia levels both in livestockconfinement areas and on the fields where manure is applied.
For example, take Dean Strauss, who milks roughly 1,900 cows attwo Wisconsin locations. He recently tried the product, applyingit in and around manure pits and through the direct system thatpumps into the pits. "It cut the odor dramatically," Strauss said."Anything we can do to address odor issues is good for our work-ers and our cows, and it helps us be better neighbors to the peo-ple who live close to our farming operation."
In a short time following application, Strauss witnessed a break-ing up of crusts and solids in the pits. "The uniformity of themanure for spreading was greatly improved," he added. "I knowwe are now getting a better distribution of nutrients across thesoil."
Better Crop YieldsThis technology can also help improve nutrient efficiency andplant uptake of P and N from manure used as fertilizer, whichleads to better overall crop health and yield increases. Reducingthe amount of P that gets locked up in the soil and N losses dueto leaching, volatilization and denitrification makes more of bothelements available for crop use.
Consider Jack Wyttenbach, a hog producer who has about 1,500sows and finishes about 25,000 hogs a year. He has experienced ayield increase of 8 bushels per acre on fields of corn fertilizedwith manure that was treated with MTM. "This yield increase isdue to improved nutrient efficiency and uptake," he said.

(NAPSI)-Just as car owners
have to pay attention to
keep their tires in good
shape, farmers also need to
keep farm equipment tires
in mind. Brand, price and
convenience may play a part
when you look to buy tires,
but a farmer's tire choice is
much more involved.
Selecting the right tire for a
tractor, harvester or grain
cart can have a lasting effect
on a farm's productivity and
the environment in general.
The good news, experts say,
is that investing the time and
trouble required to find the
best ag tire can pay divi-
dends for your farm and its
bottom line.
One of the latest develop-
ments in tractor tires is the
YieldBib ag radial created
by Michelin North America
Agricultural Tires. They
deliver better fuel economy,
longevity and traction even
in adverse conditions. And
the way the tire does it helps
the environment by improv-
ing tire footprint on the
ground while helping reduce
equipment carbon foot-
prints.
Less Impact On The
Ground
For starters, the new tire
safely runs at much lower air
pressures, so it spreads the
weight of equipment with its
longer footprint, reducing its
impact on the ground so
crops grow more readily
with less soil compaction.
This reduced impact can
lead to better fuel economy.
Spread over 12-14-hour
days and hundreds of acres,
that means finishing fields
sooner, spending less on fuel
and reducing carbon emis-
sions.
Better For The Environment
The new radial is also
designed to withstand stub-
ble damage from today's
stronger crop stalks so that it
lasts longer, which helps the
farmer's pocketbook, and
with fewer waste tires tossed
into landfills.
Said James Crouch of
Michelin North America,
"Farmers have a lot more
factors to think about when
choosing farm tires than
passenger car tires. They
have to select tires that will
help them produce the most
crops and help them be
good stewards of the land.
The right farm tire helps
their business at the same
time that it protects the envi-
ronment."

How to Reduce the Cost of Owning a Car
(STATEPOINT) –– The cost of car ownership is on the rise again this year, according to a new report from AAA. And if you’re a family on a budget or a senior on a fixed income, you may feel the impact already.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. From avoiding unnecessary insurance costs to reducing pain at the pump, savvy drivers can take practical steps to make driving a more economical mode of transport:
• Shop around for better insurance rates. If you have a good driving record, talk to your insurance company about reducing your premium. And if you are a senior and take a refresher course in driver safety specifically designed for seniors, you may be able to negotiate lower insurance rates.
• Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure as indicated on the sticker on the inside of your door, not the number on the tire sidewall. Underinflated tires car can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 percent.
• Preventive maintenance, such as changing your air filter, can go a long way toward smooth, efficient performance. A clogged air filter can increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent.
• Keep record of your vehicle maintenance, including oil changes. Try using a high performance synthetic motor oil, as opposed to conventional oil, to allow for more miles between oil changes. Premium synthetic motor oil, such as Royal Purple, can reduce maintenance costs and time spent out of service. To learn more about the benefits of using synthetic lubricants in your vehicle visit www.RoyalPurpleConsumer.com.
• Take a deep breath and change the way you drive. Aggressive driving is not only unsafe and stressful to your health, it can also reduce your fuel economy -- as all that stop-and-go uses more gasoline than smooth braking and acceleration does. You can also improve your fuel economy by reducing idling time and lightening your car’s load.
• If you’re handy, you may be able to do some regular maintenance work on your car yourself. But for those jobs that are beyond your know-how, be sure to hire a reputable mechanic. Don’t be afraid to get quotes. Knowing the going rate for the service performed and parts replaced can help you from paying unnecessary costs.
Just because the cost of driving is on the rise, doesn’t mean you need to hand over your car keys just yet. With a few phone calls, a bit of preventive car and some tweaks to your driving habits, even those on the tightest of budgets can afford to keep on motoring.

AMES, Iowa — Harvest
vegetables at the right stage
of maturity for nutritious,
high quality produce. When
properly harvested and
stored, some vegetables will
keep most of their original
flavor and food value for
months, according to horti-
culturists with Iowa State
University Extension and
Outreach. To have addition-
al question answered, con-
tact the ISU Hortline at 515-
294-3108 or hortline@ias-
tate.edu.
What is the proper way to
harvest and store winter
squash?
Harvest winter squash when
the fruit are fully mature.
Mature winter squash have
very hard skins that can’t be
punctured with the thumb-
nail. Additionally, mature
winter squash have dull-look-
ing surfaces.
When harvesting winter
squash, handle them careful-
ly to avoid cuts and bruises.
These injuries are not only
unsightly, they provide
entrances for various rot-pro-
ducing organisms. Cut the
fruit off the vine with a
pruning shears. Leave a 1-
inch stem on each fruit.
After harvesting, cure winter
squash (except for the acorn
types) at a temperature of 80
to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and
a relative humidity of 80 to
85 percent. Curing helps to
harden the squash skins and
heal any cuts and scratches.
Do not cure acorn squash.
The high temperature and
relative humidity during the
curing process actually
reduce the quality and stor-
age life of acorn squash.
After curing, store winter
squash in a cool, dry, well-
ventilated location. Storage
temperatures should be 50 to
55 degrees Fahrenheit. Do
not store squash near apples,
pears or other ripening fruit.
Ripening fruit release ethyl-
ene gas which shortens the
storage life of squash.
When properly cured and
stored, the storage lives of
acorn, butternut and hub-
bard squash are approxi-
mately five to eight weeks,
two to three months, and five
to six months, respectively.

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE From Cake Mix Come Brownies Dear Heloise: A recipe for
CHOCOLATE BROWNIES appeared in your column years ago. Unfortunately, I misplaced it. Could you please reprint it? -- Brenda H., via email
Absolutely! Here is the recipe for Heloise’s brownies from a cake mix. These are more cakelike brownies, but they will do in a pinch and with things you usually have on hand. Grab the following ingredients:
1 egg 3/4 cup water plus more as needed 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional) 1 (18.25 ounces) box devil’s-food
cake mix Preheat the oven to 350 F and
grease a 13-by-9-inch pan. In a large bowl, mix together the
egg, water and nuts (if using). Add the cake mix and STIR WELL. The batter will be thick; however, if it is too thick, add only a teaspoonful of water at a time to help thin it. Just be sure NOT to overmix. Pour into the greased pan and smooth the top.
Bake for about 20-25 minutes for chewy brownies. If you like them more of a cake consistency, then bake them for a few minutes longer. You need to watch them and test for how “done” you like them. If you like desserts, especially cakes, then order my Heloise Cake Recipes pamphlet by sending $3 and a long, self-addressed, stamped (66 cents) envelope to: Heloise/Cakes, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. Be sure to let the brownies cool before cutting, and use a plastic knife to cut them with little
or no sticking! -- Heloise NO EGGSHELLS
Dear Heloise: Some time ago, I think you wrote NOT to put eggshells down the garbage disposal. Please tell me why, and don’t say, “Because I said so!” -- John in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Well, John, some experts suggest that a lot of eggshells can damage a disposal, but I personally don’t see how. The real point is that in large amounts, they also can clog the drains further down in the pipes! This is why you must run A LOT of water before, during and after a food item is put in the disposal. Instead of putting these shells down the sink, try using them as compost. -- Heloise
OATMEAL OPTIONS Dear Heloise: When making cookies
that call for oatmeal, what kind is the best to bake cookies with -- the one- minute oatmeal, or the old-fashioned kind? I read your column every day and thank you for all the hints and advice. -- Sharon C. in Houston
You can use the one-minute oatmeal or regular when baking. Both have the same flavor; the only difference is in the appearance of the cookies. The quicker-cooking oatmeal has a finer texture, so the oatmeal will be blended into the cookie. When using regular oatmeal, you will be able to see the oats in the cookie. -- Heloise
PREPARING CALAMARI Dear Heloise: When making
calamari, an easy solution for removing the tough inner membrane of a squid involves the use of tweezers. Easy to grab onto the membrane and then remove it. -- Araceli in San Antonio
