Americans Pull Together People that recovered from the Depression would continue to “pinch pennies.”

When farms would come up for auction, farmers would secretly have penny auctions.

Prevented neighbors from losing everything.

Success of penny auctions led some states to pass laws suspending foreclosures on farms.

In 1930’s 250,000 teenagers were “riding the rails.”

Some involuntarily.

Some for adventure.

Drepression gave some new political parties power-Communist and Socialist.

People turned to humor: Hoovervilles.

Hoover Flags-pocket turned inside out.

Hoover Blankets-newspaper for blanket, etc.

Signs of Change

Feb 1933, prohibition (18th amend.) is repealed.

21st Amend.

Failed social experiment too much organized crime.

8 states continued to ban alcohol.

Empire State Building, John J. Raskob-developer, began construction in 1930.

Cost $41 mill employed 2,500 to 4,000 people on any given day.
