Y Preface

As a 20-year-old graduate student, I have had the definite academic goal as to be a highly

successful scientist !y undergraduate and !aster-oriented graduate studies have given me

"ell #no"ledge in both $lectronics and Physics $lectronics is the foundation of modern

industry, "hile Physics is the foundation of science !y doctoral graduate study in

$ngineering School of Stanford %niversity, if admitted, "ill be devoted to interdisci&linary

study in about $lectronics, Physics and some other to&ics

Y Past 'ears

!y &arents had enlightened me since I "as born (ith strong desire to study I entered the

&rimary school "hen )-year-old and finished its *-year &rogram in ) years I studied hard and

entered the high school "hen I "as 10 and finished the *-year &rogram in + years In my high

school years I "as very interested in mathematics and &hysics, and obtained many honors inrelated contests Si years ago, I, a 1+-year-old boy, enrolled in the S&ecial lass for .ifted

hildren S. at %niversity as the youngest student S. is the most selective and

com&etitive class in %niv, yet I #e&t the highest .PA and "as the monitor of the class

he aim of S. is to give the young gifted students formal and strict training in

mathematics and &hysics that is more advanced than that of normal undergraduate students

!y study at S. besto"ed me a com&etitive s&irit to"ard challenges and an intense

curiosity in $lectronics

I too# s&ecialied study in the 4e&artment of $lectronics at %niv, the only de&artment

founded for 5s!a6or in hina I also too# &hysics ma6or coursed in the Physics 4e&artment,

many of them "ere taught in $nglish and used the best boo#s (ith the &hysics foundation I

received, it "as easier for me to gras& the essential conce&ts in 5s!a6or and faster my study I

"as the first student "ho finished the +-year undergraduate &rogram in 3 years Although the

grading system is strict, my .PA "as to& 1among )0 students !y under-graduate study

brought me many honors, such as the 7ua"ei Prie, a"arded to 8most brilliant and diligent9

students only In 2000 I "as among the 10 8most ecellent9 university students "ho received

(usi Prie In 2001 I graduated from %niv "ith the 5achelor of $ngineering degree, I

learning and research, and I tried to study Physics using my #no"ledge in 5s!a6or 5esides

the course study in the first year, I studied by myself much #no"ledge in !s!a6or and

5s!a6or, and engaged in research &ositions in several different grou&s I &artici&ated in many

e&erimental and theoretical research &ro6ects and en6oyed the %<I scholarshi& as "ell asmany other &ries for my research I tried to include etensive research to&ics in my graduate

research, ranging from this to that I have had much e&erience to do inde&endent research

"hile coo&erate "ith others closely I "ill get the !aster of Science degree in =une 200+ "hen

I am 20 years old

Y >esearch A&titude

A successful scientist is firstly a successful researcher In vie" of this, I have &articularly

noticed to develo& my o"n ability of inde&endent learning and research in my &ast years of

study in &hysics and engineering science I have had research e&eriences in various fields,

such as mesosco&ic &hysics, condensed matter theories and e&eriments, o&tical &hysics, laser

technology, ?uantum o&toelectronics and microelectronics It is in my done inde&endent "or#

that I felt for the first time the thrill of discovering things #no"n to no one else in the "orld

!y research career started from the &ro6ects of o&toelectronic device design and o&tical fiber

communication under the direction of Prof 4e @iu, hair of the de&artment of electronic

engineering at %niversity I studied the band structures of o&toelectronic materials and

the setu& of lo"-loss o&tical am&lifiers I a&&lied "ell the &hysical conce&ts I #no" to

o&toelectronics in these &ro6ects and designed the &ractical fiber communication system !y

&erformance enabled me to be among a fe" ecellent students "ho "ere admitted to 6oin the <ational @aboratory of @aser echnology he ice director of this lab, Prof Bhenhua @u,

instructed me to do research in high-&o"er laser radiation and interaction "ith matter his

research resulted in my $cellent 5achelor degree dissertation and a number of honors refer

to my resume &lease as "ell as nice a&&lication to the &erforation techni?ues he C months

at this lab game me a com&rehensive training in laser technology, including e&eriments in

laser s&ectrosco&y and various #inds solid-state, gas, semiconductor, etc of lasers

!y study in ?uantum electronics continued after I arrived to %niversity I too# the

course D@aser echni?ue and A&&licationE and my 8A9 score brought me access to the

 <ational Integrated :&tics @aboratory, "here I trac#ed the ne"est &rogresses in

o&toelectronics Particularly I too# study in high-s&eed o&toelectronics and o&tical "ave

guides I "as an assistant engineer at the 7ua(ei echnology o @td Shenhen, hina in

summers of 1CC) and 1CCF the research I did there in @SI design and microelectronics is

&art of the related <ational &ro6ect I have been a research assistant in a&&lied electronics,

system science, and electrical engineering under the direction of Prof Giang Gian 7e gave

me systematic training to do com&le e&eriments I tried my best to a&&ly my &hysics

#no"ledge to these e&eriments and arrange things in order

(hile my research in o&tics and electronics "as in &rogress, I &aid more attention tocondensed matter &hysics for my !aster degree thesis, "hich "ill include t"o main sub6ectsH

mesosco&ic &hysics and &hysics of nanoscale materials I read many references in the field of

trans&ort and coo&erative &henomena in lo"-dimensional systems I learned by myself the

standard methods to analye highly correlated ?uantum many-body systems, including the

renormaliation grou& method and the random matri method !y advisors, Prof Gi-Sun 'e

and Prof =i-=iong ia, encourage me to study solid-state &hysics, I did much "or# inmesosco&ic &hysics at the ''' @aboratory %niv under the direction of Prof 5ei-'i

ang I studied the trans&ort &henomena, single-electron transfer, strong electron-electron

interaction, and &ersistent currents in mesosco&ic systems 5eing very interested in studying

&ro&erties of carbon s and other &romising ne" nanoscale materials, I studied the

electronic trans&ort &henomena in carbon s and the im&act of im&urities A recursive

.reens function method is set u& to analye such lo"-dimensional systems I also did many

e&eriments in s&ectrosco&ic determinations of trans&ort in nanostructures, and fabrication of

carbon/boride/nitride s :ther to&ics I studied include ?uantum interference effects,

&hysics of ?uasi&eriodic series, fractional ?uantum 7all effects, electronic "ave scattering on

su&erconductor surfaces, etc my research in highly correlated systems, ?uantum dots, and

?uantum "ell o&tics is no" in &rogress !y s&ecialied #no"ledge in biomembrane &hysics

comes from the research disci&line I received at the 5io&hysics @aboratory

!y &ast research e&eriences has given me an un"avering s&irit to overcome difficulties I

might face in the future %& to no", I have &artici&ated in 3 national research &ro6ects, and

have "ritten F &a&ers in the &ast one year As I am very young, I am mostly interested in

doing im&ortant research "or# "ith my vigor and creativity in science I "ish to go ahead and

study further fundamental &hysics &roblems that have nice a&&lication &ros&ects

Y Pros&ects at Stanford

he 4e&artment at Stanford attracts me as my best choice to do doctoral research in the

area bet"een &hysics and electronic engineering Stanford %niversity ran#s the first in

electrical engineering, and has <obel laureates in &hysics for three consecutive years (hat

attracted me more is that my ma6or research interests have a good match to so many Stanford

faculty members It is indeed stimulating to find the o&&ortunity for ne" students to 6oin at

once the first-class research &ro6ects at Stanford (ith my &ast research e&erience, I am

confident that under the direction of distinguished Stanford &rofessors, my &otential can

develo& into advanced #no"ledge and ability in If &ossible, my main interest in the

future "ill be focused on lasers and ?uantum electronics, condensed matter &hysics theory

and e&eriment, and bio&hysics at Stanford In these areas, I have been familiar "ith the first-

class research "or# done by corres&onding Stanford &rofessors, and "illing to do further

research under their direction As a tentative list, my bac#ground in solid-state &hysics, o&tical

&hysics and electronics seems &erfectly fit these research to&ics at StanfordH

5orn in , 1C, I gre" u& in , a &retty old city famous for its &rivate gardens and

natural river systems in Province Le" cities in hina, or even in the "orld, can match it

im&ression Although I lived there only my childhood and most &art of the old city are under

reconstruction today, I still often recall the little &aths &aved "ith bluish &ebbles, the old

houses beside the rivulets, and es&ecially, those beautiful e?uisite gardens in my mind his

e&erience fostered my first, though naive, understanding to"ard urban and architecture

@ater I moved to 5ei6ing "ith my family As a contrast to , 5ei6ing is a big city "ith

many ne" buildings, most of "hich are of modern styles 7ere one can see clearly the im&act

com&etitive <ational %niversity $ntrance $amination

At %niv, I "ent through five years of vigorous training and thus ac?uired e?uisite

s#ills in dra"ing and design 4uring the course designs, I got to familiar "ith many modern

architecture theories and tried to synthesie the understanding of s&ace and environment inmy early years "ith these modern thoughts his &rogress "as reflected in t"o &ro6ects I too#

&art in - the >esidence Area of 7igher $ducation 5ureau and the ollege of Science,

%niversity In those designs, I successfully solved the &roblems of environment,

contet and s&ace arrangement !ean"hile, I learned ho" to coo&erate "ith colleagues and

communicate "ith the client effectively

At the same time, I further develo&ed my interest in various #inds of art such as music,

&ainting, &lanar design, advertisement, animation, and so on All of them, "hether classic or

modern, native or foreign, hel&ed me understand different cultures com&rehensively

In 1C, I got my 5achelorNs 4egree in Architecture "ith ecellent record to& 1); among

some M0 students , and entered graduate &rogram in the same university

.>A4%A$ >$S$A>7

After the first year core course of graduate study, I received a .PA of 3F and ran#ed the 2nd

among the graduate class of more than +0 students, "ho "ere all very smart and diligent and

entered our graduate &rogram through highly com&etitive eaminations

In choosing my research to&ic, I realied that although architecture design is a #ind of

imaginative and creative "or# as defined as an art, it calls for rigorous scientific a&&roach at

the same time Lurthermore, itNs also im&ortant to combine modern technology and science

"ith architecture design In order to develo& my scientific mode of thin#ing, I decided to do

some research "or# that can fulfill these re?uirements !y graduate research "as engaged in

the acoustic and interior design of heater 7ere I learned systematic research method

and develo&ed the ability of "or#ing inde&endently In the acoustic model test, not only did I

hel&ed the "or#ers in ma#ing the model, but also installed the "hole set of instrument for

the e&eriment and finished the test "ith satisfying result all by myself hrough these

research and design &ractice, I learned ho" to integrate art "ith science, and my

understanding to"ard architecture and technology "ent one ste& further in the &rogress

All these e&eriences had left an indelible mar# on my intellectual develo&ment <o" I feel

confident of my s#ill of design and doing relative research and can a&&reciate a societyNs

culture, "hich is also reflected in its architecture 5ut I feel it still im&ortant for me to reflect

my o"n cultural and social bac#ground in my o"n designs more s#illfully, and "ith

advanced methods I am convinced that the further develo&ment of my &rofessional

?ualifications re?uires more advanced training li#e yours, and the advanced study under your

seasoned guidance "ill endo" me "ith a broader vision and more &rofound insights I also believe that I am "ell ?ualified for entering your graduate study, my e&erience and broad

Although one can say its develo&ment is fast indeed, the &roblems related to architecture areserious in hina Lor instance, 5ei6ing, "hich is defined as a modern metro&olis, is losing its

unreasonable large-scale buildings and constructions "ith different styles standing beside the

method and s#ills in design If &ossible, my ma6or interest "ill reside in the research of the
