CONTEXT (OR PURPOSE) FOR THE TASK
In this unit of work students are introduced to the basic WHS guidelines of the subject as well as the Industry Study component of the Preliminary HSC course.
Students have learnt about skills in relation to the construction and finishing of different timber products, where they have been provided with the opportunity to develop further knowledge, understanding and skills that relate to the timber technology. TASK RUBRIC In your response to the Industry Study task and activities you will be assessed on how well you:
● Describe the organisation and management of an individual business within the focus area industry ● Identify appropriate equipment, production and manufacturing techniques, including new and
developing technologies ● Apply research and problemsolving skills ● Use communication and information processing skills ● Identify the impact of one related industry on the social and physical environment ● Identify the impact of existing, new and emerging technologies of one related industry on society and the
environment ● Work as part of a team scenario, to allocate and monitor team work practises.
In your response to the DVD Rack you will be assessed on how well you:
● Reflect on information and discussions undertaken in class. ● Follow the set of drawing plans. ● Use workshop time to undertake guided construction of the project. ● Use class and home time to work on your folio.

THE TASK
Industry Study (In pairs)
● Examine, in detail, a company associated with the Timber and Furniture Industry in your local community
(within NSW). A variety of questions will be posed that require the student to interact with the company to
discover its management structure and position in the local and global economy.
● Fields or areas to study could include:
Timber forestry
Specialised Timber suppliers (not Bunnings, Mitre 10, Canterbury Timber)
Cabinet making
Kitchen Manufacturers
Builders (in the context of timber use, i.e. who use timber for framing)
Timber furniture producers (must be locally produced)
● Companies that produce their products overseas are not to be included in this study.
● You group is required to visit the worksite to obtain the information, and present a single, written report.
DELIVERABLES: One industry study that addresses the following:
STRUCTURAL FACTORS
1. Company name
2. Location
3. Name of contact and position (Job description)
4. Background of Company/History/What they produce
5. The overall organisational structure (management structure and titles of employees not individual names) of
the business. Use flow chart to describe hierarchy in workplace.
6. How is the product marketed/sold to the consumer?
7. Who is the end user of the product (Individual, company, government, etc)?
TECHNICAL FACTORS
1. List any notable pieces of machinery/equipment that the company uses to continue its day to day
production/manufacture. E.g. CNC Router, jointer, etc and describe its purpose. Photos must be included.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS
1. List the materials (i.e. types of timber) utilised in the products they sell.
2. Does the company participate in any recycling programme? Describe in detail (if not implemented, suggest a
recycling programme giving details of the process undertaken).
PERSONNEL ISSUES
1. What Union are the employees associated with? (Provide background information on the union and its role in
the workplace). If employees are not members, suggest what Union they could be in and its role in the
workplace.

THE TASK
Group Folio and Games Rack
SITUATION: Most modern gaming systems use a CD/DVD style of input device to store and upload games into a console hard drive. However, the need to purchase a physical disk is still common, and is the preferred method of purchase for most consumers.
BRIEF: In pairs, you are to design and create 2 identical CD/DVD Racks (Hold approximately 20 DVD/Bluray gaming cases). Per student, you will be supplied with:
Combined total of 4m timber (90 x 19 Hoop Pine) or 2m (190x19) DELIVERABLES: One design folio (one between two students) PDF via HIVE Two identical DVD/Bluray gaming Racks (one per student)
