LEARNING ACTIVITY–1

You will learn and express the tools of a manicure and pedicure process.

Visit a beauty salon or a hairdresser and observe what she or he uses. Share your

opinion with your classroom.

1. MANICURE-PEDICURE

Picture 1.1: Manicure

A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands enjoyed by

both sexes. A manicure can treat just the hands, just the nails, or both. A standard manicure

usually includes filing and shaping of the nails and the application of polish. Some special

manicures, such as the French Manicure, may also be offered. Treatments for hands usually

include soaking in a softening substance and application of hand lotion. A similar treatment

performed on the feet is called pedicure. The word "manicure" comes from the Latin manus,

meaning "hand," and cura meaning "care".

Various services for nails can be provided, such as the application of artificial nails

such as nail tips, acrylics and artificial nail gels.

1.1. Manicurist-Pedicurist

Picture 1.2: Manicurist

A manicurist or pedicurist applies treatments to real nails, such as filing, polishing,

and painting. Fancier manicures include painting pictures or designs on the nails or applying

small decals or imitation jewels.

In many areas, manicurists-pedicurists are regulated and must be licensed. The use of

tools for various costumers and the risk of infection (since the skin is manipulated and

sometimes trimmed) requires proper sanitation.

Picture 1.3: Pedicurist

5

Picture 1.4: Manicure

1.2. Manicure Bowl

Manicurist fills this bowl (plastic, china or glass) with warm water and aromatic oils.

That helps to soften both hand skin and nails.

Picture 1.5: Manicure bowl

Picture 1.6: Manicure bowl

6

1.3. Nail Clippers

A nail clipper or nail trimmer is a mechanical device used to trim fingernails and

toenails. Nail clippers are usually made of metal.

Two common varieties are:

plier type

Lever type.

Both are common household objects. Most nail clippers usually come with another

tool attached, which is used to clean the dirt out of nails. A nail trimmer often has a

miniature file fixed to it to allow rough edges of nails to be manicured. Nail clippers

occasionally come with a pocket knife or a nail catcher. The nail trimmer consists of a head

which may be concave or convex. Specialized nail trimmers which have convex clipping

ends are intended for trimming toenails, while concave clipping ends are for fingernails.

Picture 1.7: Nail clipper

Picture 1.8: Using nail clipper

7

1.4. Cuticle Pusher

A manicurist uses this tool for loosening and pushing back the cuticle. Cuticle pusher

must always be kept sterilized and clean.

Picture 1.9: Cuticle

Picture 1.10: Cuticle pusher

Picture 1.11: Cuticle pusher

1.5. Cuticle Nippers

With this tool, manicurist can remove cuticle layer easily.

8

Picture 1.12: Cuticle nipper

Picture 1.13: Cuticle nipper

1.6. Nail File

A nail file is a tool used to gently grind down and shape the edges of nails. They are

often used in manicures and pedicures after the nail has been trimmed using appropriate nail

clippers. Nail files may either be emery boards or metal files coated with corundum

(sapphire).

Emery boards are generally less abrasive than the metal nail files, and hence, emery

boards may take longer to file down nails than metal nail files. However, nail files may play

a role in the disease transmission if they are used on more than one person without adequate

sterilization. Emery boards are usually less expensive than metal nail files; therefore emery

boards can be economically disposed of after use on a single person.

Glass nail files are more recently available. Since glass nail files have a smoother and

more even surface they do not splinter the nail like emery boards and metal nail files making

them a preferred instrument by manicurists but are not as readily available as the other two

types of nail file

9

1.7. Manicure Sticks

Manicure Sticks or Orangewood use for loosening cuticle, working around nail, and

applying oil, cream, bleach or solvent to the nail and cuticle.

10

Picture 1.17: Manicure Sticks

1.8. Nail Buffer

By rubbing that tool manicurist can clean dead cells and keratin layer on the nails.

Picture 1.18: Nail buffer

Picture 1.19: Nail buffer

1.9. Nail Scissor

Manicurist cuts unnecessary pieces of skins around the nail with nail scissor.

1.10. Nail Brush

A nail brush cleans particles and waste of a nail. It also cleans the dirt between nail

and skin.
