Drought tightens grip in the Ilembe

Region

By Xpress Reporter

The Umvoti River is completely dry,” said the Honourable Mayor of the Ilembe District Municipality “(IDM), Councillor Welcome Mdabe at an emergency

media briefing held at Ilembe House two days ago.The District Municipality has been experiencing a severe

drought since September last year with certain areas of KwaDukuza and Ndwedwe receiving water at scheduled times of the day since July 2015.

Residents, businesses, agricultural activities, schools and hospitals will now fall under areas of 50% water supply restriction.

“On a normal day we supply approximately 18 million litres of water, but currently we can only supply nine million litres a day. As a District we are not in a position to open and shut water supply at certain times as this results in damages to equipment.

Water supply will therefore be reduced. Some areas will receive water and some will not. Places on high ground will suffer mostly in the late evening when water usage is low,” said Cllr Mdabe.

He added that from Wednesday last week the output was 11 million litres per day until a press release received yesterday, stated 9 million litres was now the new norm.

Umvoti River also has ageing infrastructure which needs to be replaced. Ilembe's latest cost of R 8 million will see 400 metres of new piping installed at

ýA retail supermarket store in the CBD was held up in the early hours of the start of a typical working day on Saturday at 8:15am.

According to Inspector Johannes Khoza of the KwaDukuza SAPS, in the case report; “the complainant noticed an unknown black male walking s t ra ight towards him and passed the admin where complainant was busy with admin duties. Suspect turned around with a Brown Revolver in his hand and he asked the complainant to hand over the money,” he said.

Local supermarket robbed by syndicate

Inspector Khoza said that the suspect was joined by other males and they pushed the complainant demanding cash.

“Suspect pushed him in the office where his brother was held up at gunpoint, then suspects removed the money from the till and from the office drawers and safewhilst complainant and his brother were ordered to lie on the floor,” said Khoza.

There were six black males who fled the scene with a Toyota corolla (reg. ND457419). The same vehicle was recovered at Lindelani.

plant is said to be introduced in Nonoti starting in February 2016. However the Ilembe Mayor spoke about testing and inspections needing to be done in the meantime.

The District Municipality has proposed which is to engage with KwaZulu-Natal Department of Corpora t ive Governance and Traditional Affairs to re-direct the funds from the Capital projects to the Drought Fund.

“Other measures include the continuous procurement of Jojo tanks and water tankers to fill up said Jojo tanks placed within communities. We are also looking at drilling additional boreholes to tap into ground water and other new water sources just to make the situation better for our people,” said Mdabe.

The Mayor has urged residents to use water sparingly and to continue to save water.

Ilembe have asked residents to report pipe leaks and other related issues to the Municipality's 24 hour call centre. The Mayor said that “ e v e r y o n e i s u n d e r s e r i o u s supervision” referring to Ilembe workers. However when the Xpress

Reporter returned to the newspaper's office immediately after the briefing, a Glenhills community member called with disturbing news.

Deva Govender of Glenhills E-Section, ratepayer businessman, revealed that he contacted the Call Centre and reported a burst pipe at the Glenhills A-Section.

“The pipe was leaking fresh water for around two hours and I even called the managers over and over and was given lame excuses. The issue of the same fixed pipes bursting over and over is frustrating for us in Glenhills,” said Govender.

We were inundated with calls from Glenhills residents about the alleged absence of a tanker to affected areas that had no water for allegedly two days.

The call centre can be contacted by telephone on 032 437 9379 or via email [email protected].

Areas that are affected by this severe drought include the KwaDukuza Central Business District and the surrounding areas of Highridge, W a r r e n t o n , S t a n g e r M a n o r, Townview, Rocky Park, Shakaville, Lindelani, New Guelderland and Glenhills, which are supplied through the Mvoti Waterworks.

Mandeni OSS helps orphan and senior citizenBy Xpress Reporter

The Mandeni Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) program identified two needy families that needed urgent intervention recently.

T h e M a y o r o f M a n d e n i Municipality, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu requested Standard Bank to assist in building two houses for the Mthethwa family and an orphan.

The beneficiaries were identified during the door to door Operation Sukuma Sakhe profiling in Wards 6 and 16. The local task team realized the need to approach corporate companies to lend a hand in building houses for the needy.

The Mthethwa family is living with a disabled grandmother who is living w i t h n e i g h b o u r s a n d h e r grandchildren.

Mr Toy Mzimela, the Provincial Head of Standard Bank, promised beneficiaries that the houses will be built and completed before December for them to enjoy Christmas with proper shelter.

Mandla Khumalo was also excited that he will now have place called a home like any other child.

G4S foils attempted robbery

By Xpress Reporter

Two suspects were arrested for attempting to break into a home at Umvoti Drive in the Blythedale area recently.

Seen are officers: K Pillay, SK Cossa and L Dladla

According to G4S security officer, Krishna Pillay, he arrived at the site and noticed five suspects trying to break into a house. “I called the SAPS for backup, and with their help, two

of the suspects were arrested and the other three fled,” said Pillay.

He added that one of the suspects was armed with a screwdriver.

returned home to find his premises broken into. Electrical equipment and groceries were stolen. A few weeks later, a friend spotted his amplifiers in a home at Lindelani. Police were alerted and the buyer who paid R330 for the items gave the details of the seller to police. Khulekani Khambule (23), a close friend of the victim was remorseful on being arrested. He has been remanded in custody pending a bail consideration by police.

Whom to trustWho can be trusted these days?

Police were recently tipped off about a person in possession of an unlicensed weapon. They approached the house of the culprit who fully cooperated with them. They searched his house and recovered a .22 rifle hidden in the roofing section of his house. Cyril Mthembu (39), a security guard at Isidingo Security ought to have known better. Instead, he told police that he had purchased the firearm. Police are now tracking down the seller. Mthembu, in the meantime, remains in custody pending a bail application this week.

Silly actionWoola rana than Moonsamy,

popularly known as Johnson, has had his fair share of crime. He alleges that during July he noticed a microwave, two-plate stove and three blankets missing from his house. He followed up on a report made to him and found the items in a house in the Rocky Park area and as no-one was home, left them there. Last week, police finally arrested the culprit and returned the stolen property to him. Michael Van Tonder (37), a panel beater is due back at court on 28 October in connection with the incident.

sliding door had been forced open and his television set and an amplifier were missing. The following morning at about 5am he received a call from his sister advising him that a youth had been arrested by security officers on the Durban bound train at Shakaskraal Railway Station. He took a taxi to Umhlali Police Station where he identified the stolen property. A 17-year-old Verulam youth has been remanded in custody pending the arrival of his guardian to clarify the position of the lad.

alleges that she and her friend were returning home at about 6:30am after a night of drinking. They met a group of three girls from the area. The three at tacked her fr iend and she intervened. One of the group told her that her friend tried to poison her at some stage. Mhlongo was surprised when the female suddenly slapped her, broke a bottle and stabbed her in the neck. Zinhle Mfeka (18) is due back at court on 17 November.

wedding on Saturday afternoon ended up in a holding cell eating prison food rather than the traditional wedding meals awaiting them. Police allege they spotted a blue Golf near Kearsney and pulled it over. The license disk had expired on 31 March 2015. On checking the vehicle on the computer system, it came up as being stolen in Volksrust in September 2001. The vehicle had no engine number which had been rubbed out. The passenger was quick to point out that he was merely a passenger, but he too had to be detained until his version was cleared. He was released at court on Monday whilst his friend, Sifiso Mabaso (33) was also released but is due back at court on 10 November.

Each of the twenty care homes received a Wonderbag insulation cooker, a mobile solar LED light and Compost container to assist them on their journey in going green. They also received training on how to use each of these items and why it is important to save electricity.

to make their own food gardens. Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza has 56 community garden p ro jec t s i n marg ina l i zedcommunities and they provided guidance to the foster parents. They received garden tools and seeds to assist them with starting their food gardens. Food security is an important aspect as climate change impacts on everyone's daily lives. The KwaDukuza Munic ipal i ty has a l ready provided each of the care homes with two fruit trees. This project provides residents with improved living conditions for the foster children and foster parents. This includes cost savings, energy saving, improved food security and skills training.

Urban LEDS will also be providing the homes with induction stoves. All of this will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and showcases what families can do to save electricity in their homes.

Car accidents happen all the time. Someone's car is totalled once every five seconds. Avoiding accidents, besides saving your life, can save you a lot of money.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe:

Staying

safe on the

road

• Watch for red light runners. Count to three before entering an intersection on a green light. Look both ways and be sure no one is trying to speed through a yellow light;

Exercise caution when passing trucks as these drivers have a large blind spot on their right-hand side,

so be especially careful when driving next to an 18-wheeler. If you cannot see the truck's side mirrors, the truck driver cannot see you;

Keep at least one hand on the steering wheel. Reduce in-car distractions such as changing radio stations or CDs, cell phones, eating

or momentarily taking a hand off the wheel. A gust of wind, pothole or a blown tire could send the vehicle into another lane and cause a serious accident.

Watch for kids. Children and animals have a habit of suddenly popping out from between parked cars and into roadways. If you are driving i n a r e s i d e n t i a l neighbourhood with kids present, watch carefully and slow down;

P e r f o r m e n g i n e maintenance regularly. Avoid sudden stalls or other vehicle failure by changing the oil regularly and keeping tires properly inflated;

Scan 12 seconds ahead. Always concentrate on the area where you will be driving in 10-12 seconds. For highway driving, keep positioned far enough from

other cars so if someone were to suddenly stop or swerve, you could avoid them;

Look backwards when backing out. Fender benders in parking lots are all too common, so look out for cars leaving parking spaces. Don't depend on mirrors alone -- physically look over your right shoulder while steering to alleviate blind spots mirrors can create;

Do not tailgate. Leave a three-

second cushion between you and the car in front of you and begin your journey early enough so you don't speed to make up time. As tempting as it may be when in a hurry, tailgating is a major cause of accidents and

Be courteous to other drivers. No one owns the roads, so treat others with respect and report any suspicious driving activity to authorities.

Many people assume they will be “covered” if they have an accident in their car, or if the car is stolen or hijacked, when in reality they are violating a key provision of their policy which will see any claim being rejected by their insurance company.

Things like the car being unroadworthy, having failed to disclose a previous accident when taking out the policy, or not being the “regular driver” listed in the policy.

But here's an even worse

• Change gears efficiently: Move up to the highest gear as soon as

appropriate. When you drive slowly in a higher gear, you'll burn less fuel;

• Drive smoothly: Don't drive aggressively and avoid hard

acceleration. You'll burn up to a third less fuel if you drive smoothly;

• Avoid sudden braking:Keep a good distance from the car in front of

you and avoid braking too hard as this will use more fuel;

Choosing the right car insurance policyscenario what if the insurance company you're paying your premiums to every month is just pretending to be an insurance company, treating clients ' premiums as pure income, going through the motions of claim approval and then just not paying?

A red flag number one when considering car insurance: a very low premium. Check out the company's credentials first, starting with FSB registration.

Then go on to the Ombudman for Short-Term Insurance's

website and look at claims statistics.

The Ombud's office this year revealed how the 51 competing insurers dealt with their claims in the preceding year. Their claims statistics were laid bare in the Ombud's annual report, including the number of repudiated claims which the office overturned in favour of the consumer, for each company. Before committing to a car insurance policy, read the small print, paying particular attention to the excess amount and the exclusions.

Fuel-Saving measures

• Make sure your tyres are properly inflated:Check your tyres regularly and ensure that they

are correctly inflated;• Avoid over revving your car: Don't over-rev when you're pulling away or

accelerating. Never 'redline' the rev counter;• Avoid carrying excess weight:Empty your boot out now and again and clear

your car of unnecessary items;• Switch off your engine when it's not in use: Avoid excess idling, it burns fuel unnecessarily.

Turn the engine off until you need it again;

• Use air-conditioning sparingly: Air-conditioning puts extra strain on your

engine and can increase your fuel consumption by 8%. Rather use your car's internal ventilation system where possible;

• Keep your engine well tuned and serviced:Service your car regularly - a poorly maintained

engine with dirty dark plugs can increase your fuel consumption by up to 50%;

• Avoid high speeds: High speeds = more wind resistance = greater

fuel consumption. Keep it slow. - Shell

Battery Problems Can Be Avoided

1. Age

2. Charge

3. Load

4. Give the battery a chance

Get Down to Hi-Q Stanger for a battery Check up

The garage that services your car should check that clamps and connections to the battery are secure and free from corrosion, but there are a few simple tips you can follow to reduce the chance of your battery letting you down in the depths of winter;

If the battery is more than five years old and there's any sign of it struggling to start the car, get it replaced.

If you mostly do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, invest in a modern battery conditioner/intelligent charger.

Check that everything electrical is turned off when you park up – even an interior light, boot light, can kill a battery when it's cold.

Switch off everything electrical and dip the clutch to reduce the load on the battery when you start a cold car.

In Need of a ServiceFirstly check the inner and outer edges of your tyres for uneven wear in the form of reduced tread depth. If there are any irregular tyre wear patterns or your car drifts to one side on a flat straight road, come in and have a qualified Hi-Q technician see to the problem before too much tyre damage is caused, unnecessary expenditure incurred and most important your motoring safety is compromised.

Safety TipsHave your vehicle's wheel alignment checked at least once a year, dependant upon the mileage you travel and the road surface conditions. Over time normal driving conditions takes it toll on a vehicle's steering and suspension, which could have an adverse effect on wheel alignment. Ask the technician to check your vehicles wheel alignment this ensures that all four tyres are in alignment and run together smoothly.

is the adjusting of the wheel’s angles relative to the road surface

& the other wheels on your vehicle.

In order to ensure safe motoring &

reduce tyre wearit is imperative that your tyres

are properly aligned.

2. Is the seat the right size?Various types of baby seats are available,

each catering for different weight classes. These include: reclining baby seats (0-10 kg), toddler seats (9-18 kg), booster seats (15-25 kg) and bum-booster seats (22-36 kg). A rear-facing seat offers the best protection on impact. The baby's full body weight is supported by the seatback rather

Questions to ask when buying a car seat for baby

than relying on harnesses to restrain the body.

3. Do I want a belt-restrained or ISOFIX-compatible seat?

Traditional belt-restrained seats are replaced by much-safer ISOFIX seats. These connect to a vehicle's chassis and subscribe to ECE regulations. Check your vehicle for ISOFIX compatibility. You should see clips or tags at the base of the seats, usually only in the rear and then buy the appropriate seat.

4. Is the seat easy to manage?This is important because an

overcomplicated baby seat becomes frustrating over time. You should consider the following:

• Does the seat actually fit in your vehicle?

How difficult is it to get your baby into and out of the seat? Avoid harnesses with chest clips.

The ex t ra c l ip i s a hindrance if you need to remove the baby in a hurry following an accident, hijacking or any other dangerous situation.

I s t h e s l i d i n g mechanism easy to use?

Does the seat have an easy- to-c lean cover? Studies have shown there are more germs on a baby seat than around a toilet!

Avoid seat features with black leather or vinyl as they tend to get hot in the sun.

5. What is the seat's impact protection like?

A good, safe baby seat will show visible signs of its crashworthiness. Check for head and side impact protection in the form of visible padding and extra cushioning around the shoulder areas as well.

6. Where should I put the seat in my car?

The left-rear passenger seat is the safest spot for a baby seat in your car. In a hijacking scenario, this position allows you to turn around and remove your baby from the seat before you being forced out of the vehicle. Deactivate the front passenger airbag if the front seat is the only option. (There is usually a switch in the cubby hole or by the dealer). Airbags inflate with enough power to smash the baby seat into the vehicle seatback with risk of severe injury.

At a special council meeting held on the 8 October 2015 at the council chambers the DA raised many concerns a n d s o u g h t c l a r i t y o n t h e development…

• Whether we were in compliance with procedures and processes which were followed especially with the encroachment on the enjoining land which is the sports field.

As a growing municipality does the civic centre allow for expansion with current employees just over 900?

Whether we undertook a cost benefit analysis between the current rental, operations costs and efficiency of existing leased and owned building compared to the new building as proposed by the preferred bidder.

Need for additional valuation to be done despite the property in question being valued at R9 million by Global Professional Valuation Services. Council should not settle for anything less.

The urgent need to get professional legal opinion on the contractual obligation and address gaps should they be identified.

Consultation with the ward councillor and ward committee m e m b e r s w i t h t h e p r o p o s e d development.

Direct impact on ratepayers with rates increase in future years with the (Build Operate Transfer) BOT model.

Nuts and Bolts of the whole project regard the civic centre and its cost to the municipality and whether it is affordable.

This is a brief summary of questions posed at the council meeting by the DA. After the presentation the DA proposed that the entire matter be referred to

Looking for something refreshing to drink that will not only hydrate you but tastes delicious? This is the drink for you. There is nothing more refreshing then lemon, cucumber and mint water! And wait until you find out the benefits!

Why lemon, mint and cucumber? Good question check out the benefits of each ingredient:

Lemon: Lemon water makes for a powerful detox drink; lemon juice helps to cleanse and alkalize the body. Add one thinly sliced lemon to a large pitcher, or squeeze fresh lemon juice into your glass. Lemon also aides in digestion and boosts your immune system.

Mint: Mint adds a touch of sweetness without the sugar, and it also helps settle your stomach and aids in digestion.

Cucumber: Adding a few slices of cucumber to your water makes for excellent rehydration, and cucumber c o n t a i n s a n t i - i n f l a m m a t o r y properties.

Cucumbers alone have amazing b e n e f i t s ! A c c o r d i n g t o NaturalNews.com below are 10 Benefits of cucumbers:

1. Quick pick me-up Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins. Put down your sodas and coffee and eat a cucumber slice.

2 . R e h y d r a t e s b o d y a n d r e p l e n i s h e s d a i l y v i t a m i n s Cucumbers are 95 percent water, keeping the body hydrated while helping the body eliminate toxins. Cucumbers have most of the vitamins the body needs in a single day. Don't forget to leave the skin on because the skin contains a good amount of vitamin C, about 10 percent of the daily-recommended allowance.

3. Skin and hair care If you don't like to eat the skin, it can be used for skin irritations and sunburns as aloe

DA responds to Golf Course Redevelopment Project

Exco for further scrutiny with firm recommendation to council which was shot down by the ANC. However the DA insisted that a monthly breakdown repayment be provided to council before the matter finalised.

This therefore forms part of additional recommendation of council and the report is awaited.

The DAs position is clear that we will support development that creates job opportunities (in this case more than 4000 will be employed) as long as a checklist of compliance has been adhered to.

The DA would caution the Municipal Manager not to sign any documents until the matters raised in council are addressed including the financial breakdown as per council resolution.

It must be further noted in terms of the MFMA (Municipal Finance Act) 117 councillors are barred from serving on the tender committee, evaluating or approving tenders, quotations,contracts or other bids, nor attend any such meeting as an observer. It is purely a supply chain management issue comprised of officials of the municipality. The same situationapplies when disposing of council asset in line with MFMA 14 council can dispose of asset/s on grounds it is not needed to provide a minimum level of basic municipal services and fair market value of the asset and the economic and community value to be received in exchange for the asset.

The DA will closely monitor the Golf Course Redevelopment Project and give feedback to the community of KwaDukuza.

would be used. Place a slice over puffy eyes and its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce puffiness. The silicon and sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate hair growth.

4. Fight cancers Cucumber are known to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. These three lignans have a strong history of research in connection with reduced risk of several cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer.

5. Lavishes you with vitamins A B and C, which boost immunity, give you energy, and keep you radiant. Give it more power by juicing cucumber with carrot and spinach.

6. Relieves bad breath Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

7. Hangover cure To avoid a morning hangover or headache; eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish many essential nutrients, reducing the intensity of both hangover and headache.

8. Aids in weight loss and digestion Due to its low calorie and high water content, cucumber is an ideal diet for people who are looking for weight loss. The high water content and dietary fiber in cucumbers are very effective in ridding the body of toxins from the digestive system, aiding digestion. Daily consumption of cucumbers can be regarded as a remedy for chronic constipation.

9. Cures diabetes, reduces cholesterol and controls blood pressure Cucumber juice contains a hormone which is needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin

which has been found to be beneficial to diabetic patients. Researchers found that a compound called sterols in cucumbers may help reduce cholesterol levels. Cucumbers contain a lot of potassium, magnesium and fiber. These work effectively for regulating blood pressure. This makes cucumbers good for treating both low blood pressure and high blood pressure.

10. Promotes joint health, relieves gout and arthritis pain Cucumber is an excellent source of silica, which is known to help promotes joint health by strengthening the connective tissues. They are also rich in vitamin A, B1, B6, C & D, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium. When mixed with carrot juice, they can relieve gout and arthritis pain by lowering the uric acid levels.”

Mix all these ingredients together and you have yourself the perfect beverage for:

Keeping your weight down Lemons are said to curb hunger pangs thereby reducing trips to the fridge and pantry between meals.

Fine tuning your digestive system Known for their digestive benefits, lemons help flush out toxins and impurities from our system. Say goodbye to constant heartburn and indigestion. Both lemons and cucumbers are diuretic so your body does not retain excessive water making you feel less bloated. Cucumbers are also very high in fiber which again helps the flushing out process.

Having that perfect skin Who doesn't want flawless skin? Drink the magic potion, your skin will go all clear, fresh and radiant.

Mr P.A Moodley (Sam)Mr P.A Moodley (Sam)The depths of the ocean may have seen

hidden treasure, but none quite as rare and precious as our dear husband and father.

Our hearts ache for the love we've lost and although you may have left our sides, you have never our hearts. The fondness of your memory lingers in the imprint you've made in all that we see and do. The impact you have had on our lives, our worlds, our futures is indescribable. You possessed a soul like no other, a magnanimous heart of gold, an effervescent personality and an illuminating mind bursting with intellect; yet humble enough to have walked amongst us. This eulogy cannot do justice to the man we all knew and loved.

The lessons we've learned, the laughter we've shared, the compassion we felt and the love we treasure all made possible by the connoisseur of perfection, P.A. Moodley. You will always be loved and your legacy will live on forever through your family.

Due to persistent rains and gale force winds, the Moon and Sons sponsored KwaDukuza Volleyball Association volleyball tournament could not take place on Tuesday and Thursday last week. The finalbetween Frendz and Sunbrook and the play-off between Darnall United and Manor Old Boys will now take place tonight (Wednesday) commencing at7pm.

Frendz went through to the Moon and Sons finals for Division I teams when they thrashed Manor Old Boys in straight sets in the semi-final, a fortnight ago, at the association courts.

Frendz got into the semi-final after topping their pool which also had Cool Leaders and Darnall United. Frendz beat Cool Leaders in straight sets 25-23, 25-21 and then went on to beat 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 15-10) to claim top spot in the pool. Darnall claimed the second spot after defeating Cool Leaders 25-18, 24-26, 15-9.

In the other pool, only two teams competed, namely Sunbrook and Manor Old Boys. In the only game played, Sunbrook secured pole position after defeating MOB 25-13, 18-25, 15-8.

In the cross over semi-final, Sunbrook overcame a rampant Darnall 25-14, 22-25, 15-9 to secure a berth in the finals whilst Frendz hammered MOB 25-7, 25-14 to book their place in the final.

In an Ilembe Cricket Union T20 League match played at the Gledhow grounds on Saturday, a re-vamped Warriors Sport faced debutantes Magnum B.

Warriors Sport won the toss and elected to bat first.Man of the match Sandile Mazibuko was in superb form with his 37 (not out) t h a t i n c l u d e d 3b o u n d a r i e s , w h i l s tMartin Naicker 28, Riaz Mahomed 18 and Rishen Mathapershad 14 (not out) took the innings tally to 119/4.

Warriorsnewcomers Shi raazKhan returned withfigures of 3/9/4 and Praveen Ramgareeb had figures of 2/27/3 with impressive bowling from Rishen Mathapershad who finished with figures of 2/13/4 and Gareth Govender 2/18/4 sealed Magnum's fate. Warriors defeated Magnum by 47 runs.

Gledhow claimed a slender lead after winning the first two doubles (701) with United winning the third going into the singles trailing 2-3. Darrel Shanmagum extended Gledhow's lead to 4-2 after defeating Yogan Pillay. With just two more points needed, the wheels of Gledhow's bus came off. United won the next four singles to claim victory. Jodie Naidoo shocked Neeran Somnath, Justin Naidoo accounted for Terrence Pillay, Vasa Rungasamy beat Terrence Subban and Dhana Govender had the better of

Vigen Murugan to gain an unassailable 6-4 lead. The bonus point came for Gledhow when veteran Paddy Padayachee had the better of Charlie Pillay. United won the hard fought thriller 6-5.

Gledhow made amends for the shock defeat when, in another hard fought encounter, they beat Isithebe Paints 6-5 and then Isithebe also made amends when they t r o u n c e d G l e d h o wUnited 10-1 with the c o n s o l a t i o n p o i n tcoming via Rungasamy and Jus t in bea t ingVishalin Parmasivan and Jerry Arunachellam.
