We are very grateful to Angela Wilson and Flintshire County Council for offering to host our meet-up at the County offices in Mold. This meet-up is co-produced and free of charge, please bring your lunch and drinks. Over the last year one of the key themes that has kept emerging is the challenges and barriers to spreading examples of good practice. We want to better understand what these are and how to overcome them, so others can learn from these and apply locally. Our aim is to establish a cross-sector action learning programme, working with a range of people and organisations. a) The purpose of the day will be to continue these conversations and consider the ideas from the original Wrexham ‘Wellbeing and natural environment’ workshop in more depth. b) Kate and I will offer an introduction to action learning and explain why we believe this could build our collective understanding of how to overcome some of the barriers to change. c) Offer an experience of action learning - a practical session in which you will use the techniques to explore issues relevant to you. d) Identify tangible plans for further action and potential projects. A number of other people have expressed an interest in participating in this action learning programme and I would be grateful if you could confirm as soon as possible if you would like to come on 18th January. Places are limited, and if you would like to come or would like to come to a future event or take part in this work please do email me. If you would like to discuss anything in more detail please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or call me on: 077403028934. I look forward to hearing from you soon and in the meantime send very best wishes for a peaceful and happy 2016. 1. STRUCTURE Project leads: Pam Luckock, director of the ‘Working With Not To’(WWNT) Coproduction Project and Dr Kate Hamilton, Actif Woods Wales/ Small Woods, with Fran OHara leading the project management team. Project host:‘Working With Not To’(WWNT) Coproduction Project Funding: From a range of project sponsors and people in the WWNT community sharing their assets, e.g. room space etc. Format: 1 initial group to be based in N Wales of approx 10- 12 people, starting in October 2015. A second group to be based in S Wales starting January 2016. Schedule: There will be an introduction / launch day, an end of programme shared learning event and each group will meet four times over the course of a 12 month period, in addition to sharing and communicating in an online space. Outcomes:

1. For the group members –Specific outcomes to be confirmed at beginning of each set 2. For the project leads and host o identify answers to the question posed in ‘Purpose’

below and 3. to better understand the barriers to and enablers of effective cross sector working

across organisational boundaries in context of using Greenspaces more effectively to improve health and well being outcomes;

4. Produce a map of ‘What is’i.e. whats happening, what works, what doesn’t work and where;

5. To have identified key steps to achieving success. 6. For sponsors(report/data/model/process) A cross sector action learning community 7. A final report with key learning points, plus recommendations for further action. • A model process • Research findings • Potential for action research

2. BACKGROUND Pam Luckock led and co-hosted two ‘Coproduction, primary care and the environment’meet-ups in her role as director of the ‘Working With Not To’(WWNT) Coproduction Project with Diana Reynolds, Environment and Sustainable Development Change Manager, Natural Re-sources, Welsh Government. An enthusiastic and engaged group of people attended the mini meet-ups in:

- N Wales 24th October 2014 (sponsored by Welsh Government) - S Wales 4th February 2015 (sponsored by 1000 Lives Improvement)

Following on from these Pam co-led a session with Dr Kate Hamilton at the ‘National Parks and Well-being’conference on 21st and 22nd April 2015 and also attended the ‘UNESCO UK Man & Biosphere urban forum on 13th May 2015. As part of the WWNT Meet Up 10, held in Wrexham on 7th July, Pam led a Well Being and Natural Environment workshop with Dr Kate Hamilton, Actif Woods Wales/ Small Woods. The idea to establish an action learning group and its initial membership came out of this workshop. Following this, Pam hosted a table conversation on this at the WWNT Dementia Education & Inclusion meetup, November 15.

3. PURPOSE The question we want to explore:

“A conundrum was identified at the National Parks and Well Being conference held 21-23 April 2015. There is a substantial evidence base of the benefits of exposure to natural environments for people’s health and well being and the prevention of ill health. However there appears to be a lack of policy initiatives to support a culture change to help share, spread and sustain the knowledge gained from many successful projects. Wales has an abundance of green spaces that are greatly under utilised and could

be used so much more effectively to improve health and well being. The NHS Wales Estate offers an untapped resource that could support the work of

NHS staff as evidenced by ‘The Green Exercise Partnership’ in Scotland. This could align with Future Generations Bill and provide evidence for future audits using triple bottom line; People Places Planet There are also significant numbers of people and organisations who really want to

discover how to effect change. Our inquiry will focus upon ‘What’s stopping this happening? … at scale?”

4. OUR AIMS First, in year 1, to establish a Wellbeing and Natural Environment Action Learning programme that will explore: a) barriers to and enablers of effective cross sector working across organisational

boundaries; b) What is! i.e. map whats happening currently, what works, what doesn’t work and

where; examine how success is achieved c) Identify the skills required to enable positive change Second, at the end of year 1 there will be specific outcomes, we will produce research findings, a review and there may be scope for the work to become a piece of action research. As experienced action learning facilitators we trust the process to help get to the bottom of the real issues. At the very least, by bringing together a group of people, from a range of or-ganisations and different perspectives, who want to focus their inquiry on the conundrum de-scribed, we will be able to provide evidence of ‘What is’, get people from different sectors, thinking, doing and talking to each other, discovering what does and doesn’t work. Participation in action learning programmes has been shown to empower individuals, create new knowledge and learning, support personal and professional development and important within this context, helps to build strong, trusting and sustainable relationships.

5. APPROACH STAGE 1: Begin the programme in North Wales Objective: To collaboratively identify ways in which the natural environment and outdoor spaces in North Wales could contribute to improvements in people’s health and well-being. The facilitators anticipate that a number of sub groups will form as people ‘cluster’around specific issues / themes that they want to explore. Examples of Potential issues/ themes (to be decided by North Wales set members) People collaboratively doing things together

• Asset mapping- • Explore the ‘What is’ • Sharing stories using what we have. • Literature review of evidence base of impact of Greenspace on promotion and main-

tenance of physical and mental health and well being. • Alternatives to care and treatment plans • Develop project proposals/ pilot these using a 90 day cycle (30+30+30) and report

outcomes to set. STAGE 2: Invite applications for a South Wales Set to begin 3 months after start of the N Wales set. The objectives and issues/themes to be decided by the S Wales set group. 6. DELIVERY

- An introduction to action learning day for participants, to include a short launch event. - We propose to use a 90 day cycle method (ref: Carnegie Foundation) and hold 4 ac-

tion learning days during a 12 month time frame. - At the end of the12 month programme there will be a learning event hosted by set

members that will aim to share key learning points and consider what next? - We plan to establish a social media identity and to share discussions using Blogs/

Twitter / Facebook etc - Flexibility / people travel to and start or join other groups

7. SPONSORS We would aim to gain initial sponsorship funding from organisations who would benefit from an action research group and the knowledge and data which will be produced, such as NRW/NHS/WG. Funding is required for

- administration of the group - to setup and manage the communications stream of the group including an online

sharing space - management of the meetings, facilitation and materials costs - travel and expenses for the delivery team - collating and sharing the outcomes of each group meeting

It may be possible to apply for additional funding for the aspects of the project, to expand the resources of the group, to start additional group/s, to analyse and produce reports from the outputs, to create a model that could be used by other groups.
