Hoekom maak ek so ‘n stelling? Dawid se val was baie groot. Hoekom? God soek ‘n opregte man en vrou. Mag jy net opreg wees. Ek haal net so 'n paar versies aan. PB MALEBYE MUNICIPAL MANAGER Notice Number: 4/2015 I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can have a really bad day … the kind of day that throws one off course. And, I’m not talking big stuff. The car breaks down. I forgot to get dog food from the supermarket I was just at and have to turn back. I lose my parking ticket. Need to take a family member to the doctor. Feed the fish. Feed the dogs. Fix the pool pump. Just stuff. Just life. The things we have to do as part of our journey. But, in those days one can just explode with frustration. So, when a day closes in on me and threatens to squeeze out the last ounce of sanity I have left, I take a step back and just breathe. Deep breathes. Once my breathing has calmed me down, I then have space to think about what I can be grateful for. The reality is that I don’t have real problems. There are folks that would love to have my problems. Many people don’t have a car that can break down, they can’t afford a dog and dog food might be a meal to them, they can’t get to the supermarket that often and when they do, they’re at the off cuts section at the back and they don’t have any family to care for or that cares for them. So, I’m grateful that I have a car, have family members that I can serve, can go to the supermarket, can play with my dogs and can afford a choice grade cut of meat. These days I don’t have too many times when I’m overwhelmed. I’m seldom a guest at a pity party. One of the concepts that help me tremendously is the concept of gratitude. I learned to keep a gratitude diary in which I write six things that I’m grateful for every day (three in the morning and three in the evening). After doing this for a while, I’ve realised that I am so blessed in every sense of the word. I have so much to be grateful for. I know that sometimes we can all feel that there is actually not much to be grateful for in a world that can be horrendously unfair. If you ever have a day like that, where your gratitude well has run dry, then start small. If you can see, that’s something to be grateful for, isn’t it? If you can hear, touch, taste and smell, this has to mean something? Do you have someone you love? Does someone love you? Do you have a bed that you can get into every evening and arise from every morning? Could you get out of bed and walk to the bathroom? How wonderful is that? As I write this, I feel as if I’m sounding patronising. That’s really not my intention. What I think I’m saying is that none of us should take anything that we have right now for granted. And, maybe we shouldn’t sweat the small stuff because we all have so many gifts that we can be grateful for. What I’m suggesting is that we could all consider getting a gratitude diary and list everything, no matter how small that we are grateful for. I think living with an attitude of gratitude is a pretty good way to live our lives, don’t you?
