A Cultural Icon penangpac injects a vital shot of arts & culture into Penang

On 11.11.11, The Actors Studio joined hands with Eastern & Oriental Berhad to establish the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) at Straits Quay.

A non-profit organisation to serve the community at large, penangpac is the Northern region’s first arts centre. Its opening created a significant milestone in the history of performing arts.

In conjunction with the launch, penangpac presented over 30 different performances involving hundreds of artistes from Penang and beyond. The free public performances also enabled Penang-ites to get a taste of what the arts centre and what it can offer in the future.

The 22, 000 square feet Centre features two theatres - a proscenium theatre that would seat 303 patrons as well as a Black Box theatre that can accommodate up to 150 persons at a time.

It also has studios which can be used for classes, rehearsals and practices. A foyer, ticketing office and back-of-stage facilities completes the picture.

The Centre which runs under the leadership of Malaysia’s foremost performing arts couple, Joe Hasham OAM and Dato’ Faridah Merican, hopes to bring international acts and at the same time develop a calendar of locally-produced events in addition to nurturing a love and knowledge of the rich world of performing arts amongst Penangites.

Essentially, E&O with The Actors Studio have created penangpac. It is now up to Penangites and its visitors to support the endeavours and help it to grow by attending the shows and spreading the word.

Kok Ah Wah has been making carved wooden signboards, an essential fixture at any Chinese business premises, at the same shop which was started by his father, Kok Ying Chow. One of the last living wood engravers, Uncle Kok uses only the most basic tools: chisels, sandpaper, paint, gold leaf to painstakingly fashion the solid and elegant signages.

He would take about two weeks to complete a standard-sized two character signboard. Each piece of his work is well-made, with precision and a graceful depth no machine can replicate.

Haja Mohideen’s modest songkok shop is housed in an alcove adjoining the Nagore Shrine. His father started the now sizable songkok-making business in 1936. While Haja Mohideen’s son has opted to become an engineer instead of carrying on with his father’s trade, he eventually groomed a nephew, Abdul Kader to carry on with the family legacy. Kader has been with his uncle for one and a half years now.

From the original songkok, Mohideen has expanded into Turkish fezzes and Afghan headwear and foldable songkoks. It takes about two days to complete a songkok and Hari Raya is the peak season for sales of this distinctive headgear.

DINO Ferrari walked into the room wiping his tears.“I can’t help it, it brings back memories, you know,” he says, flashing a winsome smile at the media. After an epic eight-episode competition of culinary greats coupled with many broken plates, Dino was crowned the winner of the E&O Search for AFC’s Next Celebrity Chef. Philippines-based Dino beat 34 contestants, including runner-up and fellow Filipino Diane Montecillo, winning an exclusive one-year contract as an AFC Celebrity Chef who will appear on the channel.

The 27-year-old also gets a year’s contract as creative chef with the Eastern & Oriental Group. Dino’s happy-go-lucky character and charming and friendly demeanour make you feel like you have known him for years. Despite his win, Dino maintains that he will never change. “I am and will always be that perky, fun guy.”

SUBLIME VICTORYWhen chef Bruce Lim (judge on the show) informed him of his triumph, Dino, a private chef, was so happy that he cried. “That was the happiest moment in my life.

It was very emotional - I entered the contest to challenge myself and to make my parents proud. I have a soft spot for my father and it makes me cry to see the happiness on his face.

“I have a positive mindset and I love to entertain and make people smile. I am willing to try anything new. Cooking is not my job, it is my passion. When I am in the kitchen, I bring all my skills to the table to make sure the food tastes good,” says Dino with a smile.

Despite the stress, Dino says that the challenge was a beautiful experience and he can’t wait for the new journey.

WINNING DISHIn the final battle, both finalists prepared their signature dish for 300 people at a charity gala dinner. Dino cooked pan seared cured salmon with white chocolate wasabi cream sauce and saffron cauliflower mash and seasonal vegetables while Diane cooked Beef Wellington with a port wine truffle sauce.

DINOʼS

WITH WASABIWINNING WAY

“My signature dish was the result of brainstorming with my best friend while in culinary school. I was also working as a private chef and we wanted a special menu for private functions. The idea of using white chocolate wasabi came about from a famous Italian dessert - white chocolate panacotta with wasabi. I tweaked it a little and used cream sauce instead.” He says this dish is for exclusive clients.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHEF“Passion - because without it you can’t survive in the kitchen. You need to be organised - it helps to have a clear mind and to stay focused. If your work area is cluttered, your mind will also be cluttered and you need good knife skills - you need to be fast in the kitchen and also for safety reasons.”

A WORD FOR ASPIRING CHEFS“Take the chance and go for it. It may only come to you once. Cook with passion and an open mind.”

This is an excerpt from an article which first appeared onwww.nst.com.my on 7 Jan 2012, written by Sushma Veera.

for Sabah and Sarawak to join the inaugural Return Downunder Rally which will take them across the top of Indonesia to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Their stay in Penang was fun: “Coming from the US, we were not used to the traffic at first but once you get used to it, it’s OK. Everything is available here, even though what we’re looking for can be spread over many small shops. We spent a lot of time in Chulia Street! Referrals (from the sailing fraternity) are great,” said Cheryl. Ivan added, “The longer you stay here, the more you like it. We’ve talked to a lot of people here and they are keen on MM2H.* When you come here again, you have a feeling of coming home.”

This seafaring couple has sailed more than half way round the world in their 42-foot Catalina single-mast sloop before arriving in Johor Baru, Malaysia in August 2010. In July 2011, they arrived at Straits Quay Marina, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Originally from the US, the Orgees had originally planned to sail for the Red Sea after Johor. However, meeting a friendly face during the First Annual Subang Regatta swayed them into stayinga while in Penang.

From Penang, they have made short sailing trips to Phuket, Thailand. On the day Watercolours interviewed them, Cheryl and Ivan were preparing to leave for Singapore, after which they will sail *Malaysia My Second Home Programme

Cheryl and Ivan OrgeeOriginally from Canada, Jim and Charlene boughttheir 45-footer in Florida and set sail five years agoon Christmas, bound for the Carribean. Their sailing adventures led them across the South Pacific toNew Zealand, Australia and finally Penang.

The Sibthorpes have called Straits Quay Marina home for three months at Straits Quay Marina at the time of the interview in January 2012.

Jim said, “We’ve found it great here. We were recommended by a couple who’ve stayed here. The guys on the docks are good guys and keep the place clean. Generally, the Marina staff do a first class job. They’re knowledgeable and helpful.”

Charlene & Jim SibthorpeThe only complaint Jim has is that Straits Quay Marina should have put in more berths as he is convinced that there will be a lot of long-term stays! The couple’s vessel is a handsome catamaran named Tarahumara, named after a Mexican Indian tribefrom the Copper Canyon, Mexico, known for being fast runners and who played football. At first Jim thought it was a Maori word since the vessel was made in New Zealand. Outfitted with solar panels, wind generators, alternators and inverters, the boatis well equipped to sail the high seas powered by the forces of nature.

PENANG PERSONALITY PENANG PERSONALITY

Joe Sidek, known in arts circles as the man behind the George Town Festival (GTF), now into its third year is, strangely enough, not born a Penangite. The success of the GTF has propelled the already famed island to new audiences. Joe continues to be as excited about the Festival as he was when called by the State government to start the project in 2010.

Q: Where were you born? Tell us about your early years.A: I was born in Johor in 1953. My father was the director of customs then and his last posting wasin Penang. We loved it here so we stayed!

Q: Tell us a little about your professional background.A: I attended school in Manchester and Londonand graduated in Town & Country Planning from Manchester. Then I forayed into modelling agencies, restaurants, bars. Dad allowed me to drift. When my dad passed on in 2001, I became an industrialist in a textile chemical factory to look after family interests.

Q: What are your passions? A: Passions? My mother is my passion. Then comes the arts - I l ike nurturing the young to give them what I have cultivated: meeting people, learning life’s lessons. Many of the young ones are afraid. Too many of us are held back by fear, ego, anger. I tell them that objects or projects do not define you, failures don’t define you, you move on and you can do even better. Q: Tell us about your childhood/growing up in Penang.A: I love it, the energy of Penang. I came here when I was 8. People here are different. They take ownership. Do you know Penang has the largest number of NGOs? People here are cosmopolitan, having been exposed to 300 years of trade and cultural exchange. It’s blended in our blood. Penang can show Malaysia that we can do things without fear. Arts and culture here can flourish. Penang is a platform to show that it can be done.

Q: What activities are you involved in? Why?A: I am the Festival Director of George Town Festival (GTF). The GTF started in 2010 and I was given six weeks and an extremely small budget to put together a festival - with one staff.

I was very lucky. A few key supporters and the people and the spirit of Penang came through for me. The State who believed in me, gave me the town hall for one month.

Q: What was the feedback on the two festivals? The feedback was fabulous. The Festivals provided people with insights on what could happen when we put our efforts together for Penang: street performances, jobs for young people. It was very encouraging to receive the positive views.

In 2011, I was given six months and a contract for the second GTF. By then we had more staff on longer contracts. Proposals were coming from Finland, Canada, US, Portugal, India, Philippines, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Ireland and Holland. The first Festival used George Town as its backdrop. Last year it was the Penang Botanical Gardens.

Q: What are your plans for GTF 2012? Please share them with us.A: Our target group is the ASEAN region. One of this year’s themes is “Don’t lose it”. It’s about not losing your heritage, your culture. I’m keen on reviving interest in certain arts, some of which UNESCO has listed as endangered, such as the Malaysian angklung.

GTF will help bring the world to Penang. As for the acts, I’d say, “don’t box it, don’t confine the acts to narrow contexts”. The Festival and Penang is a platform for bringing acts out.

This year, the George Town Festival 2012 will take place during the month of July 2012. Log on to www.georgetownfestival for updates.

Watercolours speaks to the man who has helped put Penang on the world arts festival map.

The STP Factor

VOICES OF STP FEATURE

The principal of Waterside Realty, Ang Boon Beng, shares his views on the strong draw Seri Tanjung Pinang has for property owners and investors.

Q : Has Seri Tanjung Pinang (STP) created an impact on the property scene in Penang?A : STP has certainly created waves in the local property scene as the first seafront masterplanned development deemed to be the new benchmark adopted by others in Penang. One can say that all STP owners are millionaires and therefore STP can be dubbed as the millionaires’ enclave of Penang.

Q : Are you saying that property prices here are all above RM1 million?A : Mostly yes, but there are a few units of the suites from the resale market which are smaller and priced below RM1 million.

Q : What percentage of capital appreciation can we expect in STP? A : Most of the purchasers of the landed properties who bought during the inaugural launch of STP in 2005 would have easily have made about 150% profit.

This translates to an average return of about 15% per annum on a straight line basis. Purchasers of Straits Quay Suites also enjoyed an exceptional capital appreciation of around 80% since purchasing the units in 2007.

Q: How does Waterside Realty fit into the equation?A : The majority of Waterside Realty’s business

revolves around the rental and the secondary sale of STP properties. Waterside Realty’s clients comprise a mix of locals and foreigners.

We see a bigger presence of regional property players buying Quayside Condos and sub-sale units at Straits Quay. Sales activities have also increased because now people would rather put their money in property in this uncertain investment climate as it is seen to be the best hedge against inflation.

Q : What do you think of the newly launched Andaman Series?A : One statement is enough to impress any prospect. Where can you find a 4.5 acre, beautifully landscaped water park within a seafront resort condominium development in this region? Nowhere.

For any condominium development in this region, developers would usually provide facilities but not to this extent as the cost of land is relatively high, especially in Penang. This is just one of the reasons that make the Andaman Series attractive other than its exclusive location facing the Andaman Sea.

Q : How do you see STP progressing, going forward?A : More exciting as E&O embarks on the second phase of STP in the near future. This is being planned carefully and creatively as this phase is much larger. One thing’s for sure, it will be a new masterpiece and propel Penang’s property profile to greater heights regionally.

Dancing in the StreetA community that plays together lives harmoniously together. Read howthe Ariza HomeownersAssociation at STP got theiract together.

27 Watercolours issue 2

Three years ago, the Ariza Homeowners Association started their annual Street Parties. 2012’s Street Party was held recently on 14 January. They continue to be fun affairs where a dinner buffet line was set up, a clown brought in to entertain the children, a live band engaged to provide the music for dancing and everyone would have a great time. To raise funds for the Association’s projects, a raffle would be held augmented by sales of wine and beer too.

The Association tries to organise other community activities throughout the year, usually centred around festivals: e.g. an Easter Egg Hunt, a Halloween “trick or treat” party. There are a few ideas a-brewing as well, such as walks around STP, painting classes for the kids and taiqi classes.

Chairperson of the Ariza Homeowners Association, Anita Pater (picture above), remembers moving into STP when it was still without electricity supply. “It was in February 2007 before the Lunar New Year,” she said. In her capacity as a pioneer resident of STP, Anita helped to form the pro-temp committee of the Association in early 2009.

The Ariza community consisted of a small number of families then. Now the numbers have swelled to 257 households of whom 231 are members of the Ariza Homeowners Association.

“We are a registered Association with our own accounts and a newsletter, which comes out every quarter. The idea behind the Association was for all proud homeowners at Ariza to be able to properly maintain and keep the value of our homes and its surrounding areas. The Committee members are a good bunch, all of whom, like me, feel the same for Ariza. We also like organising events for our fellow “Arizans” because we hope to foster goodwill and harmony amongst the various households, where children play together and neighbours get the chance to know one another,” Anita added.

The Association collects a membership fee of RM135 per month which goes towards the maintenance of the community areas, landscaping and security. The Association is always working for the betterment of the community. At present it is saving up for a communal gazebo, a better security system and more lighting for the community garden areas.

E&O IN THE NORTHERN REGION

Straits Quay, Penang’s first sea-fronting retail mall, offers a unique dining experience. If you love hearty meals complete with a wide choice of mouth-watering desserts, Delicious at Straits Quay is the place to be.

Ask to be seated inside if the weather outside is considered too warm for you. While each Delicious outlet has its own unique features, the signature bird cages and stylised trees are standard accents. However, due to its proximity to the sea, Delicious at Straits Quay has marine inspired colours and touches.

If you are more of an outdoor person or simply wish to enjoy the cool breezes, ask to be seated outside where you get a full view of the marina. Enjoy breath-taking views of the Andaman Sea as you watch the yachts sail by.

Dive into a number of newly-introduced menu items, all bursting with flavours. From the Delieast section, we highly recommend the Sumatra Ox Tail Broth, served with Asian greens, steamed rice, Emping, boiled egg and Acar Ikan Masin.

The Tiered Mixed Grill is a popular recent addition and is perfect shared among two to three diners. The set boasts servings of grilled lamb cutlet, beef tenderloin, chicken sausages, mint and shallot salsa, beef jus pesto chicken, baked potato, roasted tomato and Arugula salad.

A meal at Delicious is never complete without its mouth-watering cakes and desserts. Enjoy!
